Background: Sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve remodeling play an important role in cardiac function after myocardial ischemia (MI) injury. Increasing evidence indicates that electroacupuncture (EA) can regulate cardiac function by modulating the autonomic nervous system (ANS), but little is known about its effectiveness on neural remodeling post-MI. Objectives: To investigate the role of EA in ANS remodeling post-MI. Methods: Adult male C57/BL6 mice were equally divided into the Control (Ctrl), MI and EA groups after generating the MI model by ligating the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. Echocardiography and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium (TTC) staining were employed to evaluate cardiac function and infarct size after EA treatment for five consecutive days. Serum norepinephrine (NE) levels were measured by ELISA to quantify sympathetic activation. Then, ANS remodeling was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC), RT-qPCR, and Western blotting. Results: Our preliminary findings showed that EA increased ejection fraction and fractional shortening and reduced infarct area after MI injury. Serum NE levels in the EA group were significantly decreased compared with those in the MI group. IHC staining results demonstrated that the density of growth associated protein (GAP)43 and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive nerve fibers in the EA group were decreased with increased choline acetyltransferase (CHAT) and vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VACHT). Meanwhile, the results verified that mRNA and protein expression of GAP43 and TH were significantly inhibited by EA treatment in the MI mice, accompanied by elevated CHAT and VACHT. Conclusions: EA treatment could improve cardiac function and reduce infarct size by modulating sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve remodeling post-MI, thus helping the cardiac ANS reach a new balance to try to protect the heart from further possible injury.

Background. Simple obesity has become a global risk to health of human beings. Acupuncture, as one of traditional Chinese medicine therapies, has been widely used in obesity treatment in recent years. However, the individual heterogeneity which makes acupuncture’s efficiency unstable leads to some controversy. So more evidence-based results are necessary to judge the effectiveness of acupuncture in treatment of simple obesity. Compared with clinical trials, animal experiments are controllable, and the underlying mechanism is more likely to be explored. Last but not the least, more and more experimental studies on acupuncture for animal obesity have been published. Therefore, we conducted the systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating simple obesity in animal experiments. Methods. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for simple obesity animal models were searched from six databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, CNKI, VIP, WanFang Date, and CMB from inception to February 2017 and updated on April 12, 2019. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis. Treatment effects were summarized as relative risk (RR) and Standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% of confidence interval (CI). Results. A total of 108 trials involving 5731 rats were included. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncture had better effect on reducing weight (SMD -2.60, 95%CI: -2.93 to -2.26, p Conclusions. Our review provided positive evidence of acupuncture for simple obesity. Unfortunately, none of the firm conclusions can be drawn due to methodological flaws, high heterogeneity, and publication bias. More high-quality trials are needed in future to get objective conclusions.

Acupuncture promotes the recovery of neurological function by the overall improvement of ischemic brain injury. It is not only regarded as a rehabilitative treatment but also a pretreatment method for stroke. However, its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. In this study, rats were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) at Baihui (GV20) for 30 min/day for 6 days, ahead of conducting cerebral ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury. Infarction volume, Evans blue leakage, and neurological deficits were evaluated at 24 h after I/R injury. Then, the ipsilateral ischemic brain was isolated for RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) to identify molecular consequences. The results showed that EA pretreatment decreased blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability, reduced brain infarction volume, and improved neurological outcomes. EA pretreatment could upregulate expression of antivirus and immunity activity-associated genes (such as Ifit1, Ifit3, Irf7, and Oasla) and downregulate expression of matrix disruption-associated genes (Col24a1, Col11a1, Col27a1, etc.) in healthy rats. In addition, it could partially reverse or ameliorate genome-wide transcription changes of the ipsilateral ischemic brain. For the first time, this study provides insight into genomic network modulation of a healthy rat with EA treatment and a EA-preconditioned rat under subsequent I/R injury, which is helpful in explaining acupuncture precondition-induced ischemic tolerance of stroke. It also provides new strategies and targets for the prevention of ischemic stroke.

Electroacupuncture (EA) intervention has a remarkable cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (MIRI). Recently, it has been suggested that the gut microbiota plays an important role in regulating the progression and prognosis of MIRI. The purpose of this study was to illustrate the relationship between gut microbiota and cardioprotection of EA on MIRI. We conducted a MIRI model by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min followed by reperfusion in male Sprague Dawley rats, which then received 7 days of EA intervention. Echocardiography was employed to evaluate left ventricular function. Fecal samples were collected for microbial analysis by 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. Blood samples and myocardium were collected for inflammatory cytokine detection by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot. Hematoxylin & eosin (HE) staining and immunofluorescence of ileum tissue were performed for intestinal damage evaluation. After 7 days of EA intervention, the left ventricular function was improved with significantly increased ejection fraction and fractional shortening. Furthermore, we found that EA intervention reversed the changed gut microbiota induced by MIRI, including Clostridiales, RF39, S24-7, Desulfovibrio, and Allobaculum, improved the impaired gut barrier, reduced the production and circulation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), inhibited the level of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 12 (IL-12) in periphery and decreased the expression of Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) and IL-6 in myocardium. EA intervention could improve the impaired gut mucosal barrier and reduce the production and circulation of LPS after MIRI through regulating gut microbiota, thus inhibiting the circulation and myocardium inflammation and finally exerted the cardioprotective effect.

Background Pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection leads to high mortality in swine. Despite extensive efforts, effective treatments against PRV infection are limited. Furthermore, the inflammatory response induced by PRV strain GXLB-2013 is unclear. Objectives Our study aimed to investigate the inflammatory response induced by PRV strain GXLB-2013, establish an inflammation model to elucidate the pathogenesis of PRV infection further, and develop effective drugs against PRV infection. Methods Kunming mice were infected intramuscularly with medium, LPS, and different doses of PRV-GXLB-2013. Viral spread and histopathological damage to brain, spleen, and lung were determined at 7 days post-infection (dpi). Immune organ indices, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and inflammatory cytokines, as well as levels of activity of COX-2 and iNOS were determined at 4, 7, and 14 dpi. Results At 10⁵-10⁶ TCID50 PRV produced obviously neurological symptoms and 100% mortality in mice. Viral antigens were detectable in kidney, heart, lung, liver, spleen, and brain. In addition, inflammatory injuries were apparent in brain, spleen, and lung of PRV-infected mice. Moreover, PRV induced increases in immune organ indices, ROS and NO levels, activity of COX-2 and iNOS, and the content of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ and MCP-1. Among the tested doses, 10² TCID50 of PRV produced a significant inflammatory mediator increase. Conclusions An inflammatory model induced by PRV infection was established in mice, and 10² TCID50 PRV was considered as the best concentration for the establishment of the model.

Background. Cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP) is a highly prevalent symptom, which afflicts vast majority of patients who suffer from cancer. The current treatment options failed to achieve satisfactory effect and the side effects were prominent. Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of animal demonstrate the benefit of acupuncture for CIBP. We sought to determine if the pooled data from available RCTs supports the use of acupuncture for CIBP. Methods. A literature search for randomized controlled trials was conducted in six electronic databases from inception to May 31, 2019. Meta-analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.3 software; the publication bias was assessed by Stata 12.0 software. We used random effects model for pooling data because heterogeneity is absolute among studies to some extent. Results. Twenty-four trials were included in the review, of which 12 trials provided detailed data for meta-analyses. Preliminary evidence indicates that compared to wait list/sham group, acupuncture was effective on increasing paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and paw withdrawal latency (PWL). Compared to medicine, acupuncture was less effective on PWT, but as effective as medicine on PWL. Acupuncture can reinforce medicine’s effect on PWT and PWL. Compared to the control group, acupuncture was superior to increase body weight (BW), decrease spinal cord glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Furthermore, some studies showed acupuncture delay or partially reverse morphine tolerance. Three studies found acupuncture has no effect on PWT, but 2 of them found acupuncture could enhance small dose of Celebrex’s effect on CIBP. Conclusions. Acupuncture was superior to wait list/sham acupuncture on increasing PWT and has no less effect on increasing PWL compared to medicine; acupuncture improved the efficacy of drugs, increased the CIBP animals’ body weight, and decreased their spinal cord GFAP and IL-1β. High-quality studies are necessary to confirm the results.

The therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on inflammatory pain has been well recognized clinically, but the mechanism is unclear. Interleukin-10 (IL-10), which is produced by regulatory T (Treg) cell, is a key anti-inflammatory cytokine for relieving inflammatory pain. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate whether EA could inhibit CFA-induced pain and attenuate inflammation progression by regulating the activation of immunocyte and inducing the expression of IL-10. In this study, mice were treated with EA (2/100 Hz, 2 mA) for five consecutive days after 1 day of CFA injection. The behavioral tests were measured and analyzed after the daily EA treatment; then, hind paw, spinal cord, and spleen tissues were prepared for assessment. The results showed that EA treatment significantly increased the mechanical threshold and thermal latency after CFA injection and boosted the expression of IL-10 in paw and spinal cord tissues. EA treatment promoted Treg cells; suppressed macrophage and neutrophils cells; reduced the expression of IL-1β, NLRP3, and TNF-α; and ultimately relieved inflammatory pain. The findings suggested that the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect of EA treatment could be partially associated with suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines mediated by induction of IL-10.

It classified patients who exhibited trigger signals after administration of Shuxuening injection as suspected allergic patients and made comparisons with patients who did not report adverse effects to calculate the correlation between relevant risk factors and suspected allergic reactions. Randomized controlled studies and cohort studies of the adverse drug reaction (ADR) of Shuxuening were performed using a computer database. Data retrieval was carried out by the foundation governing the individual database. Meta-analysis was performed by using R3.2.3 software to evaluate the ADRs of Shuxuening.Results: The results of real-world study showed that administration of Shuxuening in combination with potassium aspartate and magnesium, atorvastatin calcium, Shengmai injection, pantoprazole sodium, or high-dose medication was a risk factor for suspected allergic reactions. Meta-analysis showed that the incidence of adverse events was 5.84% (95% CI 0.0499; 0.0674), and serious adverse reaction rate was 4.36% (95% CI 0.0188; 0.0760) when Shuxuening was used in combination with these drugs. The incidence of allergic reaction was also influenced by the vehicle, duration of treatment, single dose, and indicated vs off-label use.Conclusion: Risk factors for adverse reaction following the use of Shuxuening injection in patients are associated with a single dose, vehicle, type of disease, and combination with potassium aspartate, atorvastatin calcium, Shengmai injection, injection with pantoprazole sodium, and other drugs. Physicians should be careful to follow guidelines when administering this drug. We further propose that the unique methodology used in this study may be useful for reevaluation of the safety of other traditional Chinese medicines.Keywords: real-world study, evidence-based evaluation, Shuxuening injection, post-marketing safety reevaluation, allergic reaction

OBJECTIVE To analyze the correlation between VKORC1 gene polymorphisms and warfarin maintenance dosage, as well as the correlation of dosage of warfarin with age and ethnicity. METHODS We retrieved related studies published between January 2000 and March 2016 from PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, VIP, CNKI, and Wan Fang data. Two reviewers independently screened literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted data and crosscheck data. Then, RevMan5.3 software was used to perform a meta-analysis. RESULTS 53 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The most prevalent genotypes were -1639 AA, 1173 TT, and 3730 GG in both Asian and Caucasians, but the distribution frequencies of all three were higher in Asians than in Caucasians. The meta-analysis showed that compared with homozygous VKORC1-1639 AA carriers, carriers of type GA, GG, and G (GA + GG) required 45% (95% confidence interval (CI) 42 - 49), 77% (95% CI 70 - 84), and 51% (95% CI 47 - 55) higher warfarin doses, respectively. Carriers of type CC, TC, and C (CC + TC) required 83% (95% CI 73 - 92), 26% (95% CI 23 - 29), and 53% (95% CI 44 - 62) higher warfarin doses, respectively, compared to homozygous VKORC1 1173 TT carriers. Carriers of type AA, GA, and A (AA + GA) required 40% (95% CI 29 - 51), 25% (95% CI 17 - 33), and 33% (95% CI 21 - 45) higher warfarin doses, respectively, compared to carriers of the homozygous VKORC1 3730 GG polymorphism (all p 60 years. Caucasian patients aged > 60 years carrying -1639 GA, GG and G genotypes needed 24%, 39%, and 37% lower warfarin doses, respectively, compared with patients aged ≤ 60 years. These differences were statistically significant (p VKORC1 gene polymorphisms and warfarin maintenance dose differs between individuals, and that individuals with different ages and ethnicities require different doses of warfarin. Caucasians carriers of genotype -1639 GG, G and 1173 CC, TC, C required a higher mean daily warfarin doses compared with Asian patients. Therefore, in order to achieve optimal treatment and lowest risk, VKORC1 gene polymorphism detection is suggested. .

Aims Electro-acupuncture pretreatment (EAP) plays a protective role in myocardial ischemia (MI) injury. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. A growing body of evidence suggests postinfarction inflammatory response directly affects the remodeling of ventricular function. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether EAP alleviates MI through NLRP3 inflammasome inhibition. Materials and methods We constructed an AMI model by ligating the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery after 3 days of EAP with C57BL/6 mice. Echocardiography and TTC staining were employed to evaluate cardiac function and infarct size after 24 h of ischemia. HE staining and immunohistochemistry were employed to determine inflammatory level. Then, inflammasome activation was detected by western blotting, and macrophage polarization and neutrophil infiltration were observed by flow cytometry. Key findings Our preliminary findings showed that EAP reduced the infarct area and increased fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF) and decreased the degree of inflammation after AMI injury. Meanwhile, EAP inhibited the expression of NLRP3, cleaved caspase-1 and IL-1β in ischemia myocardial tissue, companied by inhibiting the expression of F4/80+, CD11b+, CD206low macrophages and activated M2 macrophage, and decreasing Ly-6G+CD11b+ neutrophils in ischemia myocardial and spleen tissue. Significance EAP inhibits the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, promotes M2 polarization of macrophages and reduces the recruitment of neutrophils in damaged myocardium, thereby decreases the infarct size and improves the cardiac function.

Objective: This study investigated the influence of electroacupuncture (EA) and its potential underlying mechanisms on adipose tissue in obese mice. Methods: Three-week-old male C56BL/6 mice were randomly divided to feed or not to feed high-fat diet (HFD), named HFD group and chow diet (CD) group, respectively. After 12 weeks, CD and HFD mice were randomly divided into two groups, respectively, to receive or not receive EA for 4 weeks. Body weight (BW) was monitored. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test and metabolic chamber recordings were performed. Blood samples and adipose tissue were collected for the analysis of leptin, triglyceride levels, and fat browning-related proteins. Results: EA significantly reduced food intake, BW, and white adipose tissue (WAT)/BW ratio; decreased the adipocyte size and serum concentrations of triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol; and increased oxygen consumption in HFD mice. Compared with the CD mice, the HFD mice had elevated fasting serum glucose level and impaired glucose tolerance; however, these parameters were decreased by EA treatment. Meanwhile, EA promoted the protein and mRNA expressions of UCP1, PRDM16, and PGC-1α in adipose tissue, and activated sympathetic nerves via p-TH, A2AR, and β3AR in white adipose tissue. Conclusions: EA reduced food intake, BW, TG, and cholesterol, and improved glucose tolerance in HFD mice. This ameliorative effect of EA on obesity-related symptoms associated with its promoted adipose tissue plasticity via activating sympathetic nerves.

Bitumen ageing is a very complex process and poses a threat to the performance of pavements. In the present work, a fluorescence spectrophotometer was employed to research the change rule of components and the structure of bitumen after the ageing process. The Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT) and Ultraviolet (UV) light treatment were carried out as ageing methods. The properties and components of bitumen were tested before and after aging. The 2D and 3D fluorescence spectra of bitumen were analyzed. The vector of fluorescence peak was calculated for evaluating the ageing process. The results indicated that the ideal concentration of bitumen- tetrachloromethane solution was 0.1 g/L or smaller for avoiding the fluorescence quenching. The coordinates of fluorescent peak appeared &ldquo, blue-shift&rdquo, after ageing due to the change of aromatics. In addition, bitumen has already occurred serious ageing when the magnitude of a vector is more than 36.

Objectives. Our previous study has used RNA-seq technology to show that apoptotic molecules were involved in the myocardial protection of electroacupuncture pretreatment (EAP) on the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) animal model. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate how EAP protects myocardium against myocardial I/R injury through antiapoptotic mechanism.Methods. By using rats with myocardial I/R, we ligated the left anterior descending artery (LAD) for 30 minutes followed by 4 hr of reperfusion after EAP at the Neiguan (PC6) acupoint for 12 days; we employed arrhythmia scores, serum myocardial enzymes, and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) to evaluate the cardioprotective effect. Heart tissues were harvested for western blot analyses for the expressions of pro- and antiapoptotic signaling molecules.Results. Our preliminary findings showed that EAP increased the survival of the animals along with declined arrhythmia scores and decreased CK, LDH, CK-Mb, and cTnT levels. Further analyses with the heart tissues detected reduced myocardial fiber damage, decreased number of apoptotic cells and the protein expressions of Cyt c and cleaved caspase 3, and the elevated level of Endo G and AIF after EAP intervention. At the same time, the protein expressions of antiapoptotic molecules, including Xiap, BclxL, and Bcl2, were obviously increased.Conclusions. The present study suggested that EAP protected the myocardium from I/R injury at least partially through the activation of endogenous antiapoptotic signaling.

Acupuncture is considered to be a promising alternative therapy for depression. Nevertheless, up to now, it remains controversial on the effects exerted by acupuncture on behavioral changes in depression models. Consequently, it’s necessary to develop a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of acupuncture for model rats of depression. Ultimately, 90 studies involving 1861 models were identified. Behavioral indicators including the number of crossings (NC) and the number of rearings (NR) in open field test (OFT), the capacity of sucrose intake (CSI) and the rate of sucrose intake (RSI) in sucrose intake test (SIT), final weight (FW) and gain weight (GW) were employed as main outcomes in depression model rats. The pooled results showed that acupuncture had not less effect than western medicine on improving NC, NR, FW, GW, RSI (P > 0.05). Acupuncture is reported to be effective in treating obesity related illnesses, but its mechanism is still unclear. To investigate this mechanism we applied electro-acupuncture (EA) in a mouse model of obesity and used RNA-seq to identify molecular consequences. Deletion of the transcription factor STAT5 from neurons (Stat5NKO) led to obesity. Acupuncture, in turn, reduced body weight and the ratio of epididymal white adipose tissue (Epi-WAT) to body weight, and it also decreased plasma concentrations of glucose, triglyceride, and cholesterol. In addition, EA increased cold endurance of Stat5NKO obese mice. EA reversed altered gene expressions in the hypothalamus and Epi-WAT, especially in the hypothalamus in Stat5NKO obese mice. This study provides, for the first time, insight into genomic networks of obesity and their modulation by electro-acupuncture, which in turn reveals potential mechanisms that explain acupuncture-induced weight-loss.

Background Memory loss is the most prominent symptoms of brain aging, but there is currently no evidence-based treatment strategy. Acupuncture has been widely used in China and the effectiveness for improving learning and memory has been mentioned in previous studies. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture for improving learning and memory in animal experiments. Methods We searched Pubmed, Embase, Ovid Medline(R), the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP) and Wanfang data Information Site to collect studies published up to December 2015. Study quality for each included article was evaluated according to the CAMARADES 10-item checklist. Outcome measure is Morris water maze. A meta-analysis was conducted according to the Cochrane systematic review method by using RevMan 5.3 software. Results Forty-two studies involving 944 animals were included. The quality score of the studies ranged from 2 to 8, with a mean of 5.3. Adhesion of circulating monocytes to vascular endothelial cells is a crucial event in development of vascular inflammatory conditions, including atherosclerosis. We investigated the roles of connexin43 (Cx43) and ATP release on monocyte-endothelial adhesion. Cx43 function and expression were manipulated by connexin channel inhibitors, overexpression and siRNA. Connexin channel inhibitors rapidly decreased ATP release from U937 monocytes and increased adhesion to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Monocyte ATP release correlated with Cx43 expression, not with Cx37 expression. Exogenous adenosine (ADO) or ATP decreased adhesion, and inhibition of ATP conversion to ADO increased adhesion. We infer that monocyte Cx43 channel activity causes ATP release, likely via Cx43-containing hemichannels, and that ATP decreases adhesion via conversion to ADO. Inhibition of HUVEC connexin channel activity did not affect ATP release or adhesion. In contrast, expression of Cx43 protein in U937 cells enhanced adhesion. Thus, Cx43 channel function and expression have opposite effects: Cx43 channel function in monocytes, but not in HUVEC, rapidly decreases adhesion via ATP release and conversion to ADO, whereas Cx43 expression itself enhances adhesion. These studies suggest that local regulation of monocyte Cx43 activity within the vasculature can dynamically modulate the monocyte-endothelial adhesion that is an initiating event in vascular inflammatory pathologies, with the baseline adhesion set by Cx43 expression levels. This balance of rapid and tonic influences may be crucial in development of vascular pathologies.

Panax Notoginseng Saponins (PNS) have been well known to have anti-tumor activity and enhance cytotoxicity of some cancer chemotherapy agents, but the mechanisms underlying these effects are still unknown. This study investigates the effect of PNS on cytotoxicity of cisplatin and the relationship between this effect and the modulation of gap junctions (GJ) function by PNS in a transfected cell line. The cytotoxicity of cisplatin (0.25-1 µg/mL) was increased in the presence of GJ. Inhibition of gap junction by either GJ blocker or interception of Connexin (Cx) expression decreased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin. Increasing GJ function enhanced cytotoxicity of cisplatin, only in the cells with functional GJ. PNS (50-200 µg/mL) significantly enhanced cisplatin cytotoxicity, but this effect required functional gap junctions between the cells. Exposure of the cells to PNS (50-200 µg/mL) for 4 h leads to a significant enhance in dye coupling of GJ in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that PNS increases the cytotoxicity of cisplatin through enhancement of GJ activity.

Many efforts have been made to investigate the role played by cytokines in the development of hypertension. But few reports exist on the association between cytokines and hypertensive renal damage. This study was to observe the changes of the serum levels of cytokines, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in patients with hypertensive renal damage, whereby to study the correlation of TNF-alpha and IL-6 with the hypertensive renal damage.According to their urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER), 102 patients with essential hypertension were divided into three groups: normoalbuminuria hypertensive group (n = 37), microalbuminuria hypertensive group (n = 36), and proteinuric hypertensive group (n = 29). Serum TNF-alpha and IL-6 of all subjects were measured with radioimmune assay. Thirty age- and gender-matched normotensive persons were selected as normotensive control group.Serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 were significantly higher in patients with essential hypertension than those in normotensive control group (p0.5). Serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 increased in proportion to UAER. The statistical significance was present among groups (p0.05). Both TNF-alpha and IL-6 were found to have a positive correlation with UAER (r = 0.79, p0.01; r = 0.75, p0.01), but not with the levels of blood pressure (BP).TNF-alpha and IL-6 are remarkably increased in hypertensive patients and may play an important role in the pathogenesis and the development of hypertensive renal damage.
