BACKGROUND: Squats are considered one of the main exercises for the lower limbs and are used in resistance training under different contexts, including rehabilitation and sports performance. OBJECTIVE: To compare the EMG activity of different muscles in back squat and lunge exercises in trained women. METHODS: Ten healthy women experienced in resistance training performed back squat and lunge exercises on a Smith machine (total work: 70% of 1RM, 1 set, 10 repetitions and 2-s/2-s of execution speed) with an interval of 20-min between exercises. Both exercises were standardized in relation to the trunk inclination and were performed with an erect trunk parallel to the cursor of the guided bar. RESULTS: The EMG activity of the vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), biceps femoris (BF), and gluteus maximus (GM) were analyzed. There were no significant differences in the EMG activity of the VM, VL, and BF muscles between the back squat and lunge exercises (P> 0.05); however, GM activation was greater during the lunge exercise (effect size = 1.15; P= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Lunges were more effective in recruiting the GM when compared to back squats. However, both exercises can be recommended when the goal is knee extensor and flexor muscle activity.

Nos últimos anos a busca por princí­pios ativos que ajudem no processo de cicatrização impulsionam o uso de fitoterápicos. Os óleos essenciais apresentam diferentes propriedades, entre elas, efeitos antiinflamatório, bactericida, antisséptico, hidratante e cicatrizante. O objetivo foi identificar o uso de óleos essenciais na cicatrização de feridas. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura indexadas nas bases de dados LILACS, Medline, PEDro, PubMed e SciELO. A coleta de dados ocorreu entre maio e junho de 2019. A amostra constituiu-se de 11 artigos publicados entre os anos 2012 e 2017, sendo todos realizados em roedores. Em suma, esta revisão atingiu o objetivo de constatar os óleos essenciais como alternativa terapêutica efetiva e de baixo custo para o tratamento de lesões cutâneas, no entanto, torna-se necessário embasamento cientí­fico para ampliação da prática de forma segura e eficaz.

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and antibiotic-enhancing effects of the essential oil obtained from Ocimum gratissimum L. (OEOg) alone or in association with light-emitting diodes (LED) lights. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and its chemical composition analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antibacterial and antibiotic-enhancing activities against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were evaluated by the gaseous contact method. The analysis of the photoinductive effect on the antibacterial activity of the OEOg and antibiotics was assessed through exposure to different LED lights (red, blue and yellow). The phytochemical analysis identified five compounds, including eugenol, as the major constituent. The OEOg caused a significant inhibition of the halo, indicating a direct antibacterial effect. Exposure to the LED lights significantly enhanced the activity of the OEOg against E. coli. On the other hand, the action of the essential oil against S. aureus was enhanced by exposure to both blue and yellow lights. The effects of LED light exposure on the activity of conventional antibiotics varied significantly according to the drug and the bacterial strain. However, most combinations of LED lights and the OEOg presented synergistic effects against resistant bacterial strains, indicating enhanced antibacterial activity. Thus, these in vitro findings suggest that both OEOg and LED lights have promising antibacterial effects. Nevertheless, further research is required to evaluate in vivo the potential of these therapies for the treatment of infectious skin diseases.

Objective To test the hypotheses that emerging viruses are associated with neurological hospitalizations and that statistical models can be used to predict neurological sequelae from viral infections. Methods An ecological study was carried out to observe time trends in the number of hospitalizations with inflammatory polyneuropathy and Guillain‐Barré syndrome (GBS) in the state of Rio de Janeiro from 1997 to 2017. Increases in GBS from month to month were assessed using a Farrington test. In addition, a cross‐sectional study was conducted analyzing 50 adults hospitalized for inflammatory polyneuropathies from 2015 to 2017. The extent to which Zika virus symptoms explained GBS hospitalizations was evaluated using a calibration test. Results There were significant increases (Farrington test, P, The introduction of novel viruses increases the incidence of inflammatory neuropathies in Brazil.

Background: Pathogenic microorganisms are causing increasing cases of mortality and morbidity, along with alarming rates of ineffectiveness as a result of acquired antimicrobial resistance. Bi2WO6 showed good potential to be used as an antibacterial substance when exposed to visible light. This study demonstrates for the first time the dimension-dependent antibacterial activity of layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets. Materials and methods: The synthesized layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets were prepared by the hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Antibacterial and antibiotic-modulation activities were performed in triplicate by the microdilution method associated with visible light irradiation (LEDs). Results: Bi2WO6 nanosheets were effective against all types of bacteria tested, with MIC values of 256 μg/mL against Escherichia coli standard and resistant strains, and 256 μg/mL and 32 μg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus standard and resistant strains, respectively. Two-dimensional (2D) Bi2WO6 nanosheets showed antibacterial efficiency against both strains studied without the presence of light. Conclusions: Layered Bi2WO6 nanosheets revealed dimension-dependent antibacterial activity of the Bi2WO6 system.

The purpose of this paper was to validate the ability of automated devices to measure the velocity of the upper limbs. Thus, 144 students, from 8 to 17 years old, both sexes, participated in the study in a social project in the city of Natal/RN. The Automated Tapping Test (AATT) was developed following the dimensions of the original EUROFIT test, but built out of metal parts, so that the calibration was more accurate and could be read as an electronic signal by the integrated circuit. The upper limb velocity test was applied in three steps: before performing the original test, all participants underwent a laterality check and then motor practice similar to the original test. After 30 minutes, the first step in the pattern established by the EUROFIT test battery was performed and 30 minutes later, the third stage, with the AATT. The measurement reliability of the automated apparatus was tested through intraclass correlations and a strong intraclass interaction coefficient of r = 0.901 was found. In conclusion, the AATT was found to be accurate and efficient as to what it is proposed to evaluate, being able to minimize the intra-evaluator error and to assist professionals in the sports., Motricidade, Vol 14 No 4 (2018): Motricidade

Introdução: A doença de Chagas (DC) é uma antropozoonose endêmica do continente americano, cujo agente etiológico é o protozoário Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). Devido à alta taxa de óbitos, faz-se necessário quantificar os casos, e demostrar a prevalência de mortalidade na região centro-oeste do Brasil. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico comparativo entre os estados da região centro-oeste e Distrito Federal do Brasil correlacionando a taxa de óbitos por DC com tendência temporal (2008-2017), os dados foram obtidos por meio da consulta na plataforma do DataSUS, do Ministério da Saúde (Brasil), e o número populacional foram extraídos após consulta no Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Resultados: Foram comparados os Estados e o Distrito Federal quanto à frequência de óbitos, após a normalização dos dados. Observou uma elevação da frequência no Estado de Goiás frente as demais regiões (p0,05). Conclusão: Juntos os dados permitem concluir que há uma variabilidade das ocorrências de óbitos por DC entre os Estados e o Distrito Federal da região centro-oeste. Ainda permite indicar as localidades mais críticas em relação às frequências de óbitos na região centro-oeste, indicando ainda que a DC continua sendo um problema de saúde pública na região avaliada.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytochemical composition and the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activities of the essential oils of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam (OEEb) and Piper mosenii C. DC (OEPm) singly or in association with blue LED (Light-emitting diode) light. The antibacterial and antibiotic-modulatory activities of the essential oils on the activity of aminoglycosides were evaluated to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, &mu, g/mL) in the presence or absence of exposure to blue LED light. The chemical analysis showed &alpha, pinene and bicyclogermacrene as major constituents of OEPm, whereas &alpha, muurolol was the main compound of OEEb. Both OEEb and OEPm showed MIC &ge, 512 &mu, g/mL against the strains under study. However, the association of these oils with the blue LED light enhanced the action of the aminoglycosides amikacin and gentamicin. In conclusion, the association of aminoglycosides with the blue LED light and essential oils was effective against resistant bacteria.

This study compared the acute effects of resistance exercise with and without blood flow restriction (BFR) on basketball players’ mood states. A total of 11 male basketball players (M age = 19.9, SD = 2.8 years; M height = 180.8, SD = 7.8 cm; M weight = 71.1, SD = 9.1 kg; M body mass index = 22.1, SD = 1.9 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions: (a) low-load resistance exercise with BFR (LLRE + BFR) and high-load resistance exercise (HLRE) without BFR. We measured mood state with the Brunel Mood Scale before and after each session. There was a significant interaction effect such that there was increased fatigue over time with LLRE + BFR ( p = .001, Δ% = 169.2). Regarding total mood disorder, there were significant pre and postexercise differences between athletes exposed to both the LLRE + BFR and HLRE conditions ( p = .048) and a decharacterization of the iceberg mood profile in the post-training LLRE + BFR condition. LLRE + BFR, compared to HLRE, promoted an acute negative effect on mood state, decharacterization of the iceberg profile, total mood disturbance, and increased participant fatigue, suggesting that this method of strength training should be avoided before sports competitions.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are locally infiltrative odontogenic cysts that are usually diagnosed during routine radiographic examinations. Therefore, it is critical that dental practitioners, in particular orthodontists, recognize and diagnose OKCs to recommend appropriate treatment. This report describes a patient whose OKC was not initially identified during orthodontic pretreatment. In addition, this report discusses the clinical and radiographic features of OKCs, as well as the differential diagnoses of these lesions.

Objectives Metastasis of melanoma to the head and neck mucosa is a very unusual condition. The aim of this study was to report four cases of patients with metastatic melanoma in the head and neck mucosa treated at a single institution. Methods Clinical data were obtained from the medical records. All cases were histologically reviewed to confirm the diagnosis, and immunohistochemical reactions were performed in the cases submitted to biopsy. Results All patients were males and the mean age was 40.5 years old. The sites of the metastatic tumors were gingival mucosa, floor of the mouth, oropharynx, and larynx. Two tumors appeared as submucosal nodules with normal color; one lesion was a blackish nodular lesion, and one was shown to be an ulcerated lesion. The size of tumors ranged from 2.0 to 4.0 cm. All patients had developed systemic disease at time of diagnosis of metastatic tumor in the head and neck mucosa. Survival rates ranged from 2 to 19 months after the diagnosis of the metastatic mucosal melanoma in the head and neck region. Conclusion Although rare, patients with melanoma must be closely and regularly followed up, with careful routine examination of head and neck, because metastatic tumors in this region seem to be part of a lethal widespread metastatic disease.

Objective: The objective of this study was to present a proposal tomographic classification for intra-articular distal radius fractures. Methods: This descriptive study was based on observing tomographic images from 74 patients with distal radius fractures. The cases were grouped by similarity according to the presence of several parameters which determine fracture complexity; the results of the descriptive analysis were transcribed as tomographic classification. Results: The proposal tomographic classification for intra-articular distal radius fractures comprised three major groups and nine sub-groups, which are organized by increasing severity according to the presence of spacing between articular fragments, angulation, loss of radial height, cortical depression, and associated dislocation. Conclusion: This proposal tomographic classification for intra-articular distal radius fractures can help professionals indicate therapeutic options. Level of Evidence IV; Case series. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar a proposta de uma classificação tomográfica das fraturas intra-articulares da extremidade distal do rádio. Métodos: Este estudo descritivo baseou-se na observação de imagens tomográficas de 74 pacientes com fratura da extremidade distal do rádio. Os casos foram agrupados por semelhança de acordo com a presença de alguns parâmetros determinantes da complexidade da fratura. Os resultados da análise descritiva foram transcritos na forma de uma classificação tomográfica. Resultados: A classificação tomográfica proposta para as fraturas intra-articulares da extremidade distal do rádio compreendeu três grupos maiores e nove subgrupos, organizados em ordem crescente de gravidade, de acordo com a presença de espaçamento entre os fragmentos articulares, desvio angular, perda da altura radial, afundamento cortical e luxação associada. Conclusão: Esta classificação tomográfica proposta para as fraturas intra-articulares da extremidade distal do rádio pode auxiliar os profissionais na indicação da conduta terapêutica. Propolis is a natural resin used around the world to treatment of several diseases. We evaluated the effect of Brazilian propolis (P1) in guinea pig isolated trachea in vitro contracted with hista-mine, in paw oedema induced by histamine in mice and anti-ulcerogenic effect of propolis formulation in mice. We used a P1 extract from South of Brazil to produce a formulation containing sodium bicarbonate and propolis dry extract (2%). In the guinea pig trachea Brazilian propolis extract (10 μg/mL) produced a non-significant inhibition in the cumulative response curve for histamine. However, the dose of 100 μg/mL shown had a significant inhibitory effect on the contraction induced by histamine (51% ± 5%). In the mouse paw oedema induced by intraplantar injection of histamine (50 μg/paw), the results showed that the treatment of the mice with P1 (10 or 100 mg/Kg (p.o) or 1 or 10 mg/Kg (i.p)), 0.5 h beforehand, significantly inhibited the paw oedema with maximal inhibition (MI) of 25% or 42% by p.o. route or 22% or 37% by i.p. route, respectively. Finally we have pre-treated mice with P1 formulation (20 mg/Kg or 40 mg/Kg, p.o, one time) or vehicle (powder) in animals submitted to diclofenac-induced ulcer, after 8 h P1 formulation inhibited of 43% or 83% of ulcers scores, respectively. Results showed that P1 formulation inhibited the ulcerogenic effect induced by diclofenac. Results suggested also, at least in part, the antiulcerogenic effect of formulation containing standardized extract of propolis can be due to the antagonistic action on the histaminergic system.

In general, 3,5-diiodothyronine (3,5-T2) increases the resting metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, exerting short-term beneficial metabolic effects on rats subjected to a high-fat diet. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of chronic 3,5-T2 administration on the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid axis, body mass gain, adipose tissue mass, and body oxygen consumption in Wistar rats from 3 to 6 months of age. The rats were treated daily with 3,5-T2 (25, 50, or 75 μg/100 g body weight, s.c.) for 90 days between the ages of 3 and 6 months. The administration of 3,5-T2 suppressed thyroid function, reducing not only thyroid iodide uptake but also thyroperoxidase, NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), and thyroid type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase (D1 (DIO1)) activities and expression levels, whereas the expression of the TSH receptor and dual oxidase (DUOX) were increased. Serum TSH, 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine, and thyroxine were reduced in a 3,5-T2 dose-dependent manner, whereas oxygen consumption increased in these animals, indicating the direct action of 3,5-T2 on this physiological variable. Type 2 deiodinase activity increased in both the hypothalamus and the pituitary, and D1 activities in the liver and kidney were also increased in groups treated with 3,5-T2. Moreover, after 3 months of 3,5-T2 administration, body mass and retroperitoneal fat pad mass were significantly reduced, whereas the heart rate and mass were unchanged. Thus, 3,5-T2 acts as a direct stimulator of energy expenditure and reduces body mass gain; however, TSH suppression may develop secondary to 3,5-T2 administration.

Objetivos: Investigar o padrão de consumo de bebidas alcoólicas entre estudantes do curso de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) e as possíveis implicações para a vida acadêmica. Métodos: Utilizou-se um questionário sobre o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e de situações vivenciadas após o consumo dessas substâncias, aplicado a 216 estudantes no período 2013.2. Resultados: A prevalência de consumo de bebidas alcoólicas entre os estudantes de enfermagem da UFPB é de 61,57% e as consequências acadêmicas que se destacaram foram: o não comparecimento e chegar atrasado a aulas e estágios, dificuldade em concentra-se ou prestar atenção e dormir durante a aula. Conclusão: Conclui-se que há consequências por causa do consumo de bebidas alcoólicas que podem influenciar de forma negativa o desempenho acadêmico, contudo as consequências orgânicas e comportamentais que o álcool traz obtiveram maiores resultados. Na atualidade, as questões que envolvem o uso de anticoagulantes com o sangramento gengival aumentado ainda não são bem esclarecidas, havendo necessidade de avaliação se realmente estes medicamentos podem condicionar a mudança na inflamação gengival. Buscou-se neste estudo questionar e avaliar a saúde gengival de indivíduos cardiopatas, que utilizam anticoagulantes em período de internação. Foram aplicados questionários para coleta de dados socioeconômicos dos pacientes cardiopatas internados e realizou-se exame dos índices de placa visível (IPV) e sangramento gengival (ISG). Os pacientes participantes deste estudo eram > 18 anos, com 10 ou mais dentes em boca, cardiopatas internados e usuários de anticoagulantes. Participaram deste estudo 58 pacientes, a média de idade foi 55+12,92 anos; 69% eram homens; 62,1% leucodermas; 20,7% tabagistas e 46,6% diabéticos. O tempo da cardiopatia foi de 57,18+85,69 meses. O retorno ao Dentista ocorreu em média de 83,20 meses; 53,5%, 43,1% e 3,4% pertencem, respectivamente, as classes C, D e B. A maioria dos pacientes (87,9%) teve presença de IPV e 46,6% apresentou ISG. Na análise de risco houve uma relação entre o IPV e tabagismo -1,31 (1,12-1,53); >30 anos 1,085 (1,002-1,176), >40 anos; 1,244 (1,084 – 1,424). Cardiopatas que usam anticoagulantes apresentam necessidades de cuidados em relação à cavidade oral.Palavras-chave: Doença das Coronárias. Boca. Equipe Hospitalar de Odontologia. We sought to study this question and assess the gingival health of cardiac patients using anticoagulants in hospitalization. Questionnaires were used to collect socioeconomic data from hospitalizedpatients and examination of visible plaque index (VPI) and gingival bleeding (GBI) were carried out. The patients participating in the study were ≥18 years, with 10 or more teeth in their mouth, hospitalized cardiac patients and anticoagulants user. The study included 58 patients, mean age was 55+12,92; 69% were men; 62.1% Caucasian; 20.7% were smokers and 46.6% diabetics. The time of disease was 57,18+85,69 months. The return to the dentist was an average of 83.20 months; 53.5%, 43.1% and 3.4% are respectively the classes C, D and B. Most patients (87.9%) had the presence of IPV and 46.6% had ISG. The risk analysis there was a relationship between VPI and smoking -1.31 (1.12 to 1.53); > 30 years 1.085 (1.002 to 1.176), > 40; 1.244 (1.084 to 1.424).Keywords: Coronary Disease. Mouth. AIM To investigate the modulatory effect of B-1 cells on murine peritoneal macrophages infected with Leishmania major (L. major) in vitro. METHODS Peritoneal macrophages obtained from BALB/c and BALB/c XID mice were infected with L. major and cultured in the presence or absence of B-1 cells obtained from wild-type BALB/c mice. Intracellular amastigotes were counted, and interleukin-10 (IL-10) production was quantified in the cellular supernatants using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of the lipid mediator prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were determined using a PGE2 enzyme immunoassay kit (Cayman Chemical, Ann Arbor, MI), and the number of lipid bodies was quantified in the cytoplasm of infected macrophages in the presence and absence of B-1 cells. Culturing the cells with selective PGE2-neutralizing drugs inhibited PGE2 production and confirmed the role of this lipid mediator in IL-10 production. In contrast, we demonstrated that B-1 cells derived from IL-10 KO mice did not favor the intracellular growth of L. major. RESULTS We report that B-1 cells promote the growth of L. major amastigotes inside peritoneal murine macrophages. We demonstrated that the modulatory effect was independent of physical contact between the cells, suggesting that soluble factor(s) were released into the cultures. We demonstrated in our co-culture system that B-1 cells trigger IL-10 production by L. major-infected macrophages. Furthermore, the increased secretion of IL-10 was attributed to the presence of the lipid mediator PGE2 in supernatants of L. major-infected macrophages. The presence of B-1 cells also favors the production of lipid bodies by infected macrophages. In contrast, we failed to obtain the same effect on parasite replication inside L. major-infected macrophages when the B-1 cells were isolated from IL-10 knockout mice. CONCLUSION Our results show that elevated levels of PGE2 and IL-10 produced by B-1 cells increase L. major growth, as indicated by the number of parasites in cell cultures.

Abstract 3213 Poster Board III-150 Background The use of anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody during stem cell collection has significantly improved transplant outcomes in b-cell NHL. The CD52 antigen is expressed on T-NHL, making it a suitable target for immunotherapy programs, given the availability of the anti-CD52 alemtuzumab. Methods In this prospective trial, alemtuzumab was given at 3,10, 30 mg IV (days 1-3) and then 30 mg IV, 7 days later. G-CSF (10mcg/kg) and GM-CSF 250 mcg/m2 were provided daily, 5 days after starting alemtuzumab, and until a target of at least 2×106 CD34+ cells/kg was collected. Patients (pts) then underwent conditioning with standard BEAM. Results Sixteen pts [Peripheral T-cell (n=6); angioimmunoblatic (n=2); anaplastic large cell (n=4); hepatoslenic (n=2); NK/T (n=2)] were enrolled. Pts were required to have adequate counts (platelets >100K, ANC >1.5). Median age was 44 (range, 22-62) years. Median prior treatments was 1 (range,1-7). At study entry (SE), 8 pts (50%) were in first remission, 7 (44%) had chemosensitive relapse, and one pt had chemorefractory disease. Median IPI at SE, was 0 (range 0-1) and median marrow cellularity was 40% (ranged, 10%-90%). Five of 15 pts tested (33%) had marrow involvement at any time, and 3 of 8 tested (37.5%) had evidence of clonal T-cell by PCR at the time of SE. Eight pts (50%) failed to mobilize an adequate number of stem cells; a rate that is comparable to our historical control with cytokine mobilization alone in b-cell malignancies with rituximab (Am J Hematol 2009;84:335). The median time to start apheresis in the pts who were able to mobilize successfully was 4.5 (range, 2-7) days after initiation of cytokine administration. The median number of CD34×106/Kg collected was 5.9 (range, 4-13.5). The median number of collection days was 4(range, 2-6). Three of the failures underwent successful mobilization with chemotherapy, and 2 underwent marrow harvest. There was a trend for a higher risk of failure in pts who had received more > one chemotherapy regimen, those who had been exposed to Hyper-CVAD (4 of 5 failed), and those with bone marrow cellularity < 30%. Age did not appear to have had an impact. Due to small numbers however, none of these associations reached statistical significance. Only one of the 8 pts who mobilized developed ANC< 1500 and platelets Conclusions The use alemtuzumab with cytokines is safe and feasible during autologous stem cell collection.
