This study aims to investigate the association between health conditions and overweight in climacteric women assisted by primary care professionals. It is a cross-sectional study conducted with 874 women from 40 to 65 years of age, selected by probabilistic sampling between August 2014 and August 2015. In addition to the outcome variable, overweight and obesity, other variables such as sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical, eating and behavioural factors were evaluated. Descriptive analyses of the variables investigated were performed to determine their frequency distributions. Then, bivariate analyses were performed through Poisson regression. For the multivariate analyses, hierarchical Poisson regression was used to identify factors associated with overweight and obesity in the climacteric period. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 74%. Attending public school (PR: 1.30-95% CI 1.14-1.50), less schooling (PR: 1.11-95% CI 1.01-1.23), gout (PR: 1.18-95% CI 1.16-1.44), kidney disease (PR: 1.18-95% CI 1.05-1.32), metabolic syndrome (MS) (PR: 1.19-95% CI 1.05-1.34) and fat intake (PR: 1.12-95% CI 1.02-1.23) were considered risk factors for overweight. Having the first birth after 18 years of age (PR: 0.89-95% CI 0.82 to 0.97) was shown to be a protective factor for overweight and obesity. The presence of overweight and obesity is associated with sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical and eating habits.

RESUMO: Objetivo: Determinar a prevalência de anemia e seus fatores associados em mulheres em idade reprodutiva do município de Vitória de Santo Antão, Pernambuco. Métodos: Estudo transversal com amostra representativa de 322 mulheres, com idade entre 15 e 49 anos. A anemia foi diagnosticada pela dosagem de hemoglobina abaixo de 12 g/dL. As variáveis independentes foram: condições demográficas e socioeconômicas (idade, raça/cor, escolaridade, alfabetização, presença de crianças com idade < 5 anos no domicílio, regime de ocupação de residência, posse de bens e renda familiar per capita), condições de moradia (número de pessoas no domicílio, número de dormitórios e condições de saneamento básico), segurança alimentar e nutricional e condições de saúde das mulheres (menarca, número de gestações, passado de abortos, índice de massa corporal e ferritina). A regressão de Poisson foi utilizada para a análise dos fatores associados à anemia. Resultados: A média de idade das mulheres investigadas foi de 31,1 ± 6,61 anos (desvio padrão - DP) e a prevalência de anemia, de 18,6% (IC95% 14,7 - 23,3). Após análise multivariável, a anemia apresentou associação significativa com idade ≤ 19 anos e com baixo índice de ferritina. Conclusão: A prevalência de anemia encontrada se caracteriza como um problema de saúde pública de grau leve e segue a tendência mundial de países em desenvolvimento. ABSTRACT: Objective: To identify the prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia and associated factors in women at reproductive age in the city of Vitoria de Santo Antão, Pernambuco. Methods: Cross-sectional study with a representative sample of 322 women aged between 15 and 49 years. Anemia was diagnosed by measuring hemoglobin below 12 g/dL. The independent variables were: demographic and socioeconomic conditions (age, race/color, education, literacy, presence of children aged < 5 years in the household, regime of residence occupation, ownership of assets, and per capita income), housing conditions (number of people in the household, number of bedrooms, and basic sanitation), food and nutrition security and women’s health conditions (menarche, number of pregnancies, history of miscarriages, body mass index, and ferritin). Poisson regression was used to analyze the factors associated with anemia. Results: The mean age of women surveyed was 31.1 ± 6.61 years old (standard deviation - SD) and the prevalence of anemia was 18.6% (95%CI 14.7 - 23.3). After multivariate analysis, anemia was significantly associated with age ≤ 19 years and low ferritin. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia is characterized as a mild public health problem and follows the world trend in developing countries.

Embora pertencentes ao mesmo grupo fotossintético (MAC - Metabolismo Ácido das Crassuláceas), a evapotranspiração de distintas espécies de palma forrageira pode responder de maneira diferenciada às variáveis meteorológicas, e depende da sua dinâmica do crescimento. Objetivou-se analisar a contribuição de variáveis meteorológicas e de características morfológicas dos cladódios e da planta sobre a evapotranspiração de espécies de palma forrageira dos gêneros Nopalea e Opuntia. O experimento foi conduzido em Serra Talhada, Pernambuco, onde as espécies ‘IPA Sertânia’ (Nopalea sp.), ‘Miúda’ (Nopalea sp.) e Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia sp.) foram submetidos a distintas lâminas (2,5; 5,0; e 7,5 mm) e intervalos e irrigação (7; 14 e 28 dias). A evapotranspiração real e dados biométricos das espécies de palma, e variáveis meteorológicas foram obtidos entre março de 2012 e agosto de 2013. Matriz de correlação de Pearson e análises canônica e de trilha foram aplicadas aos dados. Verificou-se que a radiação solar global se destacou como a variável que mais influenciou na redução da evapotranspiração real (ET) das três espécies, e a velocidade do vento àquela que afetou a resposta da ET à variação da demanda atmosférica (ET/ETo) das espécies Orelha de Elefante Mexicana e ‘IPA Sertânia’. O aumento do índice de área do cladódio implicou na redução da ET dessas duas últimas espécies, enquanto os efeitos do número de cladódios de 1ª e 2ª ordens foram os mais importantes para a ‘Miúda’. Logo, a evapotranspiração da palma forrageira depende da sazonalidade das condições meteorológicas e das características morfológicas das suas espécies. Despite belonging to the same photosynthetic group (CAM - Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), evapotranspiration of distinct species of forage cactus may respond differently to meteorological variables and depends on its growth dynamics. The objective of this work was to analyze the contribution of meteorological variables and morphological characteristics of cladodes and the plants on the evapotranspiration of forage cactus species of the genus Nopalea and Opuntia. The experiment was conducted in Serra Talhada, State of Pernambuco, where the species ‘IPA Sertânia’ (Nopalea sp.), ‘Miúda’ (Nopalea sp.) and ‘Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ (Opuntia sp.) were submitted to different irrigation depths (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 mm) and intervals (7, 14 and 28 days). Actual evapotranspiration and biometric data of forage cactus species and meteorological variables were obtained between March 2012 and August 2013. Pearson correlation matrix and canonical and path analysis were applied to the data. It was verified that the global solar radiation stood out as the variable that most influenced the reduction of the actual evapotranspiration (ET) of the three species, and the wind velocity as the one that affected the response of ET to the atmospheric demand variation (ET/ETo) of the species ‘Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ and ‘IPA Sertânia’. The increase in the cladode area index implied in the reduction of ET of the latter two species, while the effects of the number of 1st and 2nd order cladodes were the most important for the ‘Miúda'. Hence, forage cactus evapotranspiration depends on the seasonality of the meteorological conditions and the morphological characteristics of its species.

Esophageal motor abnormalities are frequently found in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. The role of bile in reflux-induced dysmotility is still elusive. Furthermore, it is questionable weather mucosal or muscular stimulation leads to motor dysfunction. The aims of this study were to analyze (i) the effect of bile in the amplitude of esophageal contractions; and (ii) the effect of mucosal versus muscular stimulation. Eighteen guinea pig esophagi were isolated, and its contractility assessed with force transducers. Three groups were studied. In group A (n= 6), the entire esophagus was incubated in 100 µmL ursodeoxycholic acid for 1 hour; in group B (n= 6) the mucosal layer was removed and the muscular layer incubated in 100 µmL ursodeoxycholic acid for 1 hour; and in group C (n= 6) (control group) the entire esophagus was incubated in saline solution. In all groups, five sequential contractions induced by 40 mm KCl spaced by 5 minutes were measured before and after incubation. Contractions amplitudes before incubation were 1.319 g, 0.306 g, and 1.795 g, for groups A, B, and C, respectively. There were no differences between groups A and C (P= 0.633), but there were differences between groups A and B (P= 0.039), and B and C (P= 0.048). After incubation amplitude of contraction were 0.709 g, 0.278 g, and 1.353 g for groups A, B, and C, respectively. Only group A showed difference when pre and post-stimulation amplitudes were compared (P= 0.030). Our results show that (i) bile exposure decreases esophageal contraction amplitude; and (ii) the esophageal mucosa seems to play an important role in esophageal motility.

In the present study, two alkaloids isolated from Pterogyne nitens, a plant native to Brazil, have been shown to induce apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. These compounds, pterogynine (PGN) and pterogynidine (PGD), were tested for their effect on a human infiltrating ductal carcinoma cell line (ZR-7531). The cell line was treated with each alkaloid at several concentrations. Time-dependence (with or without recuperation time) and concentration-dependence (in the range 0.25-10 mM) were investigated in cytotoxicity and apoptosis assays. The annexin assay indicated an apparently higher percentage of death by necrosis of malignant cells after 24 h exposure to both P. nitens extracts than the Hoechst assay. Thus, our results in the two tests demonstrated that the Hoechst assay can discriminate between late apoptotic cells and necrosis, whereas the flow cytometry-based annexin V assay cannot. We concluded that PGN and PGD have effective antineoplastic activity against human breast cancer cells in vitro, by inducing programmed cell death.

A method, based on Raman spectroscopy, for identification of different microorganisms involved in bacterial urinary tract infections has been proposed. Spectra were collected from different bacterial colonies (Gram-negative: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter cloacae, and Gram-positive: Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp.), grown on culture medium (agar), using a Raman spectrometer with a fiber Raman probe (830 nm). Colonies were scraped from the agar surface and placed on an aluminum foil for Raman measurements. After preprocessing, spectra were submitted to a principal component analysis and Mahalanobis distance (PCA/MD) discrimination algorithm. We found that the mean Raman spectra of different bacterial species show similar bands, and S. aureus was well characterized by strong bands related to carotenoids. PCA/MD could discriminate Gram-positive bacteria with sensitivity and specificity of 100% and Gram-negative bacteria with sensitivity ranging from 58 to 88% and specificity ranging from 87% to 99%.

Background and Aims: Esophageal motor abnormalities are frequently found in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. The role of bile in reflux-induced dysmotility is still elusive. Furthermore, it is questionable weather mucosal or muscular stimulation leads to motor modification. The aims of this study were: (a) analyze the effect of bile infusion in the amplitude of esophageal contractions and (b) analyze the effect of mucosal vs muscular stimulation. Methods: 18 guinea-pig esophagi were isolated and its contractility assessed with force transducers. Three groups were studied. In group A (n= 6) the entire esophagus was used and incubated in 100 mML ursodexocicolic acid for 2 hours. In group B (n=6) the mucosal layer was removed and themuscular layer incubated in 100mML ursodexocicolic acid for 1 hours. In group C (n=6) (control group) the entire esophagus was used and incubated in saline solution. In all groups, five sequential contractions spaced by 1 minute were measured before and after incubation. Contractions were recorded after KCl 40 mM stimulation. Results: Contractions before incubation did differed among groups (p= 0,006) and averaged 1,319(A),0,306(B) and 1,795(C). After incubation amplitude of contraction was 0,709 , 0,278 and 1,353 for groups A, B and C respectively. Before incubation there is no diferrences between groups A and C (p=0,633) there is difference between groups A and B (p=0,039) and B and C (p=0,048). After incubation there is no differences between groups A and B (p=0,134) there is difference between groups A and C (p=0,022) and B and C (p=0,000).When we compare average within groups (before and after) there is difference only in group A (p=0,030). Conclusion: Our results show that bile exposure may induce ineffective esophageal motility and the mucosa seems to take an important role in esophageal motility.

Five patients with differing forms and severity of cranial aspergillosis illustrate the range of neuroradiologic manifestations as evaluated with angiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Together with the physical findings, these subjects illustrate the dire clinical situation requiring immediate recognition in order to attempt to controll this devastating, treatment resistant pathologic fungal infection.
