Abstract This study was undertaken to establish the UAE population’s normal BMI and HC growth charts. BMI growth charts represent BMI values at each age and gender-specific percentiles. The UAE’s development is unique in its cultural practices and genetic makeup; therefore, extrapolating health determinants from other nations to the UAE is unwise. It is, therefore, essential to have reference growth parameters for the UAE population. In this cross-sectional study, we measured BMI and Head Circumference in 20,998 infants and children, of both sexes, 0–18 years of age from all seven states that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), enabling us to construct the BMI and HC charts for the UAE. Using the LMS system BMI and HC charts were created. The prevalence of obesity ranged from 0 to 5.9% in males and from 0.8 to 6.6% in females at different ages. The mean BMI values for each age in both sexes were statistically significantly larger than those obtained in UAE children 30 years ago. Our study provides BMI and head circumference charts tailored to the growth patterns of UAE children.

Abstract Background The allometric body shape index (ABSI) and hip index (HI), as well as multi-trait body shape phenotypes, have not yet been compared in their associations with inflammatory markers. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between novel and traditional anthropometric indexes with inflammation using data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and UK Biobank cohorts. Methods Participants from EPIC (n = 17,943, 69.1% women) and UK Biobank (n = 426,223, 53.2% women) with data on anthropometric indexes and C-reactive protein (CRP) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. A subset of women in EPIC also had at least one measurement for interleukins, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interferon gamma, leptin, and adiponectin. Four distinct body shape phenotypes were derived by a principal component (PC) analysis on height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist (WC) and hip circumferences (HC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). PC1 described overall adiposity, PC2 tall with low WHR, PC3 tall and centrally obese, and PC4 high BMI and weight with low WC and HC, suggesting an athletic phenotype. ABSI, HI, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip index (WHI) were also calculated. Linear regression models were carried out separately in EPIC and UK Biobank stratified by sex and adjusted for age, smoking status, education, and physical activity. Results were additionally combined in a random-effects meta-analysis. Results Traditional anthropometric indexes, particularly BMI, WC, and weight were positively associated with CRP levels, in men and women. Body shape phenotypes also showed distinct associations with CRP. Specifically, PC2 showed inverse associations with CRP in EPIC and UK Biobank in both sexes, similarly to height. PC3 was inversely associated with CRP among women, whereas positive associations were observed among men. Conclusions Specific indexes of body size and body fat distribution showed differential associations with inflammation in adults. Notably, our results suggest that in women, height may mitigate the impact of a higher WC and HC on inflammation. This suggests that subtypes of adiposity exhibit substantial variation in their inflammatory potential, which may have implications for inflammation-related chronic diseases.

Background: The prevalence of myopia in the 5–15-year age group in India has been 7.5% over the past four decades. While ocular growth and physical growth occur simultaneously during early life, the existence of a common regulatory system for both is still debated. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to analyze the ocular biometry and anthropometric values of young myopes and emmetropes aged 18–25 years. Materials and Methods: This case–control study involved a sample size of 86 participants. Corneal curvature was measured using keratometry, while A-scan ultrasonography was utilized to measure axial length, lens thickness, anterior chamber depth, and vitreous chamber depth. Results: The results indicated that there were no significant differences in ocular biometry and anthropometric values between the case and control groups, except for corneal thickness and axial length. The mean corneal thickness was found to be 549.64 μm in the case group and 566.05 μm in the control group, while the mean axial length was 24.70 mm in the case group and 23.41 mm in the control group. An increase in height was correlated with longer axial length in myopes. Conclusion: There was no difference in anthropometry and ocular biometry in emmetropes and myopes in the age group of 18–25 years of age. Myopes tend to have thinner corneas, which should be taken into consideration before performing refractive surgeries. The presence of thin corneas in individuals with myopia can result in inaccurately low measurements of intraocular pressure, potentially hampering the early detection of glaucoma within this high-risk demographic.

Abstract In this work, we studied the near-surface flow field structure of railway bridges with different heights through field investigation and wind tunnel simulation experiments. Meanwhile, we simulated the distribution of sand accumulation around a bridge via CFD software based on the sand accumulation around the Basuoqu bridge in the Cuona Lake section of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. Results show that the sand around this railway bridge is mainly from the lake sediment on the west side of the railway and the weathered detritus on the east side. The height of the railway bridge in the sandy area affects the distribution of the near-surface flow field and the variation in speed on both sides of the bridge. The wind speed trough on both sides of the 6 m high bridge is higher, and the horizontal distance between the wind speed trough and the bridge section is 1.5 times that of the 3 m high bridge. Wind speed attenuates in a certain range on the windward and leeward sides of the bridge, forming an aeolian area; under the beam body, it is affected by the narrow tube effect, forming a wind erosion area. The height of the bridge determines its sand transport capacity. Under certain wind conditions, the overhead area at the bottom of the 3 m high bridge and its two sides do not have the sand transport capacity, so sand accumulates easily. Nevertheless, the sand accumulation phenomenon gradually disappears with the increase in bridge clearance height. The objectives of this study are to reveal the formation mechanism of sand damage for railway bridges, provide theoretical support for the scientific design of railway bridges in sandy areas, and formulate reasonable railway sand prevention measures to ensure the safety of railway running, which have certain theoretical significance and practical value.

Background: In countries that do not have national growth charts, the WHO or CDC growth charts are often used for growth assessment. How reliable or appropriate are these charts in monitoring growth of children in these countries? Methods: A cross sectional study of children, aged 6-18 years in Calabar, South-South Nigeria was randomly studied. Heights and weights were measured using a portable stadiometer with a weighing scale. Body mass index (BMI) was then calculated. The data obtained was analyzed and plotted in the CDC growth charts. Results: The mean height for boys and girls was 0.79 and 0.86 SD scores respectively above the 50th percentile points on the CDC growth chart for ages 6-11 years for boys and 6-12 years for girls; but 0.75 and 0.37 SD scores respectively below the 50th percentile for ages 12-18 years for boys and 13 -18 years for girls. The mean weight for boys and girls was 0.67 and 0.63 SD scores respectively at or above the 50th percentile point on the CDC growth chart for ages 6-11 years (for boys) and 6-15 years (for girls) but 0.58 and 0.42 SD scores respectively below the 50th percentile for ages 12-18 years (for boys) and 16-17 years (for girls). The mean BMI values for boys and girls was 0.58 and 0.55 SD scores respectively above the 50th percentile points on the CDC growth chart for ages 6-10 (for boys) and for all the ages studied for girls but 0.30 SD scores below it for boys 11-18 years. Conclusion: The growth parameters (height, weight and BMI) of children in Calabar, South-South Nigeria compares closely to that of the CDC growth charts. The CDC growth charts can be used in this area for the assessment of children for growth and development.

Background: In paediatric practice, weight and height are required for therapeutic and diagnostic interventions. In some circumstances actual anthropometric measurements are not possible and estimates are used. Several formulae are in use for weight and height estimations. The adequacy of these estimates has not been tested for our children. The aim of the current study was to compare the adequacy of formula methods of weight and height estimation with measured values in children. Materials and Methods: This was a comparative observational study. Children who met the inclusion criteria were selected consecutively and studied over a two month period using a semi-structured questionnaire. Weight and height of each child were measured and recorded to the nearest 0.1kg and 0.1cm respectively using standard protocols. Background: This study aims to asses the nutritional status among adolescent school girls using their serum zinc levels and to correlate it with their height. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of adolescent girls attending public secondary schools in Oshimili local govt. area of Delta state in Midwestern Nigeria. Results: The mean serum zinc level of the total population was 13.30mmol/l±5.82. Majority (58.3%) of the girls failed to attain the threshold value of 10.71mmol/l of serum zinc. The mean height of the population was 155.4cm with Standard Deviation Scores (SDS) score of -0.64±0.48, while the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 19.1kg/m2 ±2.91 with an SDS score of -0.54±0.47. The mean serum zinc levelof urban girls (11.05±4.66μmol/l) was significantly lower than that of rural girls (15.54±6.31μmol/l) (p = .009). There was no correlation between the mean serum zinc levels with height SDS (p=0.28) and the BMI SDS (p=0.69). Conclusion: Majority of the adolescent girls in Oshimili local Government Area of Delta State Mid western Nigeria have low serum zinc level when compared to threshold value, and there was no correlation of serum zinc with their height SDS or BMI SDS.

Background: Since cardiovascular disease (CVD) stands as the primary cause of death in those with diabetes, and given the substantial influence of obesity as a common risk factor for both diabetes and atherosclerotic conditions, this investigation sought to find the relationship between anthropometric indicators and CVD risk within these populations. Methods: Our study examined 36,329 adults, including those with diagnosed diabetes, pre-diabetes, and without diabetes from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data spanning 1999 to 2018. Various anthropometric indicators such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight, and height were assessed. Baseline characteristics were compared among the three groups after weighting. Participants were then grouped based on anthropometric indicators, and logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between these indicators and CVD risk in the total diabetes group (including diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals). Threshold effect analysis was conducted to explore nonlinear relationships, and mediation analyses assessed whether serum parameters influenced these relationships. Results: This cross-sectional study involved 36,329 participants, weighted to a count of approximately 160.9 million, including over 45.9 million pre-diabetic individuals and around 16.6 million diabetic individuals. Baseline analysis showed significant associations between all six anthropometric indicators and CVD risk across patients with different diabetes statuses. Weighted restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve analysis highlighted increased CVD risk among the total diabetes group for each anthropometric indicator compared to the non-diabetic group. Anthropometric indicators were then divided into quartiles, and after adjusting for confounders, Model 3 revealed that the highest BMI group had a heightened risk of CVD compared to the lowest BMI group. Similar trends were observed in the WWI and WHtR subgroups. Threshold effect analysis of anthropometric indicators unveiled nonlinear associations between waist circumference, height, WWI and CVD risk. Mediation analysis suggested that lipid parameters, especially HDL, significantly mediated these relationships. Conclusion: In individuals with diabetes and pre-diabetes, BMI, weight, and WHtR displayed a consistent, linear increase correlation with CVD risk. Conversely, the link between waist circumference, height, and WWI and CVD risk showcased a more complex, nonlinear pattern. Moreover, HDL level emerged as notable mediator in the association between anthropometric indicators and the risk of CVD.

Background and aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between age at menarche (AAM) and anthropometric parameters in young female students in Shahrekord, southwest Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in elementary and senior girls’ schools in Shahrekord in 2018. The sampling method was multistage cluster sampling. The 633 students were studied out of 4868 students selected before the commencement of the study. The statistical analysis was done with a one-way analysis of variance, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, and the Kaplan-Meier estimate. Background: Physical growth pattern and nutritional status using anthropometric measures are the key inputs to understand general health condition of the population even in micro level communities like tribal communities in India. In order to find out the present condition of physical growth pattern and nutritional status in such communities in a tribal dominated state with increasing impact of globalization and modernization, this present cross-sectional study was conceptualized to assess the physical growth patterns and nutritional status by using anthropometric measures among the Apatani and the Nyishi tribal children in Arunachal Pradesh, India through a comparative way. Methods: A total of 442 children (240 boys and 202 girls) aged 5 to 15 years living in rural areas of Lower Subarnasiri (the Apatani tribe) and Kamle (the Nyishi tribe) districts of Arunachal Pradesh, India were considered for the present analysis. The international standards were used to collect height and weight and other anthropometric data to understand physical growth patterns. BMI for age percentiles were calculated and used for nutritional status categorization. Results: The results revealed that the height (cm), weight (kg), Waist Circumference (cm), Hip Circumference (cm) and Mid Upper Arm Circumference (cm) showed a gradual increase over the age in both Apatani and Nyishi children. The maximum increase of anthropometric measures was observed between 10 and 13 years of age in both the groups but Apatani children were slightly taller and heavier than the Nyishi children. Apatani children had higher percentage of overweight and obesity compared to Nyishi children i.e. 12.6% and 9.5%, respectively. It may be due to the modification of traditional dietary pattern and regular consumption of fast food. Conclusions: Therefore, the Apatani tribal children were heavier and taller compared to Nyishi counterparts. Besides, both the undernutrition as well as overnutrition problem were observed among studied children, perhaps correlated with rapid alternation from traditional food consumption towards fast food and less physical activities in their early age.

Abstract Hindus and Muslims represent the two largest religions in India, and also differ in nutritional status, health-related habits and standard of living associated with economic disparities. In this context, the present study considered estimated secular changes in body size, proportions, and weight status among Hindu and Muslim Indian men. The data are from anthropological surveys in the 1970s which included measurements of height, weight and sitting height of 43,950 males 18–84 years (birth years 1891–1957). Leg length was estimated; the BMI and sitting height/height ratio were calculated. Heights of men 35 + years were adjusted for estimated height loss with age. Weight status was also classified relative to WHO criteria for the BMI. Anthropometric characteristics of the two groups were compared with MANCOVA with age and geographic region as covariates. Linear regression of height on year of birth was also used to estimate secular change in each group. Heights, weights, and BMIs tended to be, on average, greater among Muslim than Hindu men at most ages, while distributions by weight status between groups were negligible. Sitting height was greater among Muslim men but estimated leg length did not differ between groups; the sitting height/height ratio thus suggested proportionally shorter legs among Muslim men. Results of the regression analyses indicated negligible differences in secular change between groups across the total span of birth years but indicated a decline in adjusted heights of men in both groups born between 1891 through 1930s and little secular change among those born in the 1930s through 1957. The variation in heights, weights and BMIs between Muslim and Hindu men at most ages suggested variation in socio-economic status and dietary habits between the groups, whereas the negligible estimated secular changes in height between groups likely reflected economic, social, and nutritional conditions during the interval of British rule and the transition to independence.

ObjectiveTo investigate the detection rate and main influencing factors of growth retardation in infants aged 0-3 in Minhang District， and to provide relevant evidence for early intervention， nutrition promotion and health guidance in the future.MethodsFrom September 1， 2020 to August 31， 2021， the height， weight， basic information of parents， feeding methods， and lifestyle habits of infants who received systematic healthcare aged 0‒3 in community health service centers and Minhang maternal child health hospital were collected， and the current situation and influencing factors of infant growth retardation were analyzed.ResultsAmong the 68 637 infants who underwent a systematic physical examination in Minhang District， the total detection rate of growth retardation was 5.03% （3 453/68 637）. The detection rates in the 0-year-old， 1-year-old， 2-year-old， and 3-year-old groups were 6.57% （1 636/24 885）， 3.90% （664/17 031）， 4.62% （827/ 17 905）， and 3.72% （326/8 773）， respectively. There was no difference in the detection rate of growth retardation between boys and girls （P>0.05）， and a multinomial logistic regression analysis of 13 influencing factors （infant birth weight， birth length， parental weight， height， education level， mother’s childbearing age， delivery mode， household registration， feeding mode within 6 months， infant sleep， etc.） in univariate analysis showed that birth weight

Background: Childhood obesity is associated with faster linear growth; nonetheless, its benefit to the mature height of Indonesian children is questionable. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between adiposity and height growth of Indonesian children, adolescents, and young adults aged 7 to 23 years. Methods: Height and skinfolds at triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, and calf were measured in 2,520 children, adolescents, and young adults aged 7 to 23 years (boys = 1,116, girls = 1,404). Central adiposity (subscapular and suprailiac skinfolds) and peripheral adiposity (triceps and calf skinfolds) were projected against heights in each age group. The ANCOVA test and partial correlation were used for statistical analysis. Results: With the exception of ages 8 to 12 years, boys were always taller than girls after controlling for age and central or peripheral adiposity. Boys with higher central and peripheral adiposity were taller than their peers up to the age of 17 (r = 0.30–0.72, P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Girls with central adiposity grew taller than their thinner peers until the age of 14 (r = 0.17–0.50, P < 0.05, P < 0.01), whereas girls with peripheral adiposity benefit from this advantage over a more extended period of time. Afterward, adiposity did not offer any benefit on heights. Conclusions: Children with high adiposity who were taller at an earlier age have no significant advantage over their thinner peers in terms of adult height.

Introduction: Malnutrition is a major global health crisis that needs immediate attention. Adolescence is a crucial stage where nutrition plays a major role on account of their growth and development. There is a need to assess the nutritional status of Government school children in Tamil nadu to take appropriate policy decisions and implement nutritional interventions. Aim: To assess the dietary gaps of Government school children and compare their anthropometric parameters with Indian Council of Medical Reasearch (ICMR) standards. Also, to associate their daily intake of five food groups with their weight status. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu District, Chennai,Tamil Nadu, India as a part of a nutritional awareness camp in month of March 2022 to examine the eating pattern of school-going children aged 11-14 years, in a Government school of Kalivanthapattu village, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu. Data was collected randomly among 73 school children during a nutritional awareness camp conducted by study Institute. A validated tool was used to identify the dietary gaps in food group intake and the anthropometric parameters were assessed using standard measures and were compared with ICMR and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards to analyse their nutritional status. The acquired data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: Out of the 73 children, there were 52 girls and 21 boys and the mean age of the children was 12.09±0.80 years. The dietary gap assessment tool indicated the gross deficiency in the intake of different food groups by the children. The majority of the samples 52 (71.2%) had an average dietary pattern, 9 (12.3%) students were found to have poor dietary habits and only 12 (16.4%) students had a good dietary pattern. Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment indicated that 39 students (53.4%) were normal (-2SD to +1SD) and others were found to be malnourished. A substantial variation in the mean weight of 12-year-old-male students (p-value=0.025) as well as female students (p-value=0.003) was observed when compared to ICMR standards. There was high significant difference between mean height of 13-year-old female students and the mean height as per ICMR standards (p-value=0.004). Conclusion: The dietary intake of Government school children was average and the anthropemetric assessment indicated that many of them were malnourished.

Abstract Background The Million Veteran Program (MVP) participants represent 100 years of US history, including significant social and demographic changes over time. Our study assessed two aspects of the MVP: (i) longitudinal changes in population diversity and (ii) how these changes can be accounted for in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To investigate these aspects, we divided MVP participants into five birth cohorts (N-range = 123,888 [born from 1943 to 1947] to 136,699 [born from 1948 to 1953]). Results Ancestry groups were defined by (i) HARE (harmonized ancestry and race/ethnicity) and (ii) a random-forest clustering approach using the 1000 Genomes Project and the Human Genome Diversity Project (1kGP + HGDP) reference panels (77 world populations representing six continental groups). In these groups, we performed GWASs of height, a trait potentially affected by population stratification. Birth cohorts demonstrate important trends in ancestry diversity over time. Objective: To discern the relationship of height and weight with body composition in healthy attendants of cancer patients. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Oct to Dec 2022. Methodology: A total of 226 healthy adults aged 19-47 years having similar daily physical activity levels were included. The body composition of study participants was evaluated using a bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) machine. The weight of all participants was recorded with the help of a weighing machine. The participants' height was measured using a Harpenden Stadiometer and recorded. Results: Our study showed that weight had a significant positive correlation with body fat mass (rs value=0.83), skeletal muscle mass (rs value=0.763), total body water (rs value=0.704), fat-free mass (rs value=0.75) and per cent body fat (rs value 0.716). On the other hand, height had a negative but non-significant association with fat mass (rs value= 0.025) and a negative significant association with per cent body fat (rs value=-0.16). Height had a positive and significant association with fat-free mass (rs value=0.553), total body water (rs value=0.501) and skeletal muscle mass (rs value=0.505). Conclusion: Weight, if used alone, is not a good indicator of obesity or emaciation, and height has a negative association with fat mass.

Abstract Background Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and multisystemic genetic disorder that is characterized by severe hypotonia, hyperphagia, short stature, and global developmental delay. Although early recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment has been proven to rescue some symptoms and bring additional benefits to PWS patients, studies in patients under 2 years old are scarce. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness and safety of rhGH treatment for young children. Methods A total of 96 genetically confirmed Chinese PWS infants or toddlers (47 males) followed between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Sixty-five infants (early treatment group) started rhGH treatment during their first year, and 31 toddlers (later treatment group) started at the age of 1–2 years. Auxological parameters, carbohydrate metabolism parameters, thyroid function, liver function, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and radiographs were acquired before the initiation of the treatment and every 3–6 months thereafter. Methods The electronic medical records of adults, intubated with DLT from February 2018 to December 2020, were reviewed. Data retrieved included age, sex, height, weight, and size and depth of DLT. The finally documented DLT depth (depth final, DF) was compared with the calculated depths, and the relationship between height and DF was also evaluated. A questionnaire on endobronchial intubation method was sent to anesthesiologists. Results A total of 503 out of 575 electronic records of consecutive patients were analyzed. Although the relationship between height and DF was shown to have significant correlation (Spearman’s rho = 0.63, P < 0.001), DF was shown to be significantly greater than calculated depths (P < 0.001). Despite 57.1% of anesthesiologists have knowledge of clinical recommendations to anticipate size and depth of DLT, no one routinely utilizes those recommendations. Conclusions Anesthesiologists tend to place DLTs in a deeper position than expected when depths are calculated using height-based recommendations. Although such discrepancies may not be clinically meaningful, efforts are needed to standardize the methods of endobronchial intubation to prevent potential complications associated with malposition.

Abstract Background In low- and middle-income countries, poverty and impaired growth prevent children from meeting their cognitive developmental potential. There are few studies investigating these relationships in high-income settings. Methods Participants were 12,536 children born between 2000 and 2002 in the UK and participating in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS). Short stature was defined as having a height-for-age 2 or more standard deviations below the median (≤ − 2 SDS) at age 3 years. Standardized British Abilities Scales II (BAS II) language measures, used to assess language development at ages 3, 5, 7 and 11 years, were the main outcome assessed. Results Children with short stature at age 3 years (4.1%) had language development scores that were consistently lower from ages 3 to 11 years (− 0.26 standard deviations (SD) (95% CI − 0.37, − 0.15)). This effect was attenuated but remained significant after adjustment for covariates. Trajectory analysis produced four distinct patterns of language development scores (low-declining, low-improving, average and high). Multinomial logistic regression models showed that children with short stature had a higher risk of being in the low-declining group, relative to the average group (relative risk ratio (RRR) = 2.11 (95% CI 1.51, 2.95)). They were also less likely to be in the high-scoring group (RRR = 0.65 (0.52, 0.82)). Children with short stature at age 3 years who had ‘caught up’ by age 5 years (height-for-age ≥ 2 SDS) did not have significantly different scores from children with persistent short stature, but had a higher probability of being in the high-performing group than children without catch-up growth (RRR = 1.84 (1.11, 3.07)). Conclusions Short stature at age 3 years was associated with lower language development scores at ages 3 to 11 years in UK children. These associations remained significant after adjustment for socioeconomic, child and parental factors.

Abstract Objective Height data is not useful immediately without further processing. The Growth Length Mat (Stunting Mat) was designed to stunting directly. However, the Mat has not been validated for use in Ghana. This study compared stunting measured with the Mat and stunting measured following the WHO recommended procedure. We sampled 163 children aged 6–24 months in the Bono region of Ghana. We also explored the acceptability and interpretability of the two procedures among mothers and healthcare givers. Results The prevalence of stunting was 3.7% and 11.7% using the Mat and WHO procedures respectively. The Growth Length Mat had very low sensitivity (21.0%) but high specificity (98.6%) of detecting stunting in children. However, in younger aged children, the Mat was more accurate in detecting stunting. Both healthcare workers and caregivers found it easy to interpret the stunting status of children using the Mat. We conclude that the Growth Length Mat was less sensitive at detecting child stunting compared to the current gold standard of measuring stunting in younger children. There are possibilities to improve the accuracy and utility of the Mat for measuring stunting in low-resource settings by re-designing the mat to be more age appropriate.

Background: Ineffective erythropoiesis and excessive red blood cell transfusions are the major source of iron overload in case of thalassemia major patients. It is mainly accountable for the growth retardation, morbidity, and mortality in patients with beta thalassemia major. The availability of effective iron chelators and proper knowledge regarding the iron toxicity can significantly improve the rate of survival in thalassemia patients. Aims and Objectives: The study was done to compare the efficacy and safety of the deferiprone (DFP) with deferasirox (DFX) in regulating the growth pattern among the thalassemia major patients. Materials and Methods: The height and weight were plotted on the World Health Organization recommended growth charts for 0–5 years and 5–19 years old boys and girls during the follow-up visits. Comparison between the role of DFP versus DFX was evaluated by t-test. Results: There is no statistically significant (P=0.11 in males and P=0.06 in females) difference between DFP versus DFX while considering height velocity. A similar observation was obtained in case of weight velocity (P=0.78 in males and P=0.56 in females) and basal metabolic index (BMI) index (P=0.44 in males and P=0.53 in females). Conclusion: Both DFX and DFP have no significant correlation in regulating the height, weight, and BMI of thalassemia children.

Abstract Background Height is an important anthropometric measurement and is associated with many health-related outcomes. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified hundreds of genetic loci associated with height, mainly in individuals of European ancestry. Methods We performed genome-wide association analyses and replicated previously reported GWAS-determined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Taiwanese Han population (Taiwan Biobank; n = 67,452). A genetic instrument composed of 251 SNPs was selected from our GWAS, based on height and replication results as the best-fit polygenic risk score (PRS), in accordance with the clumping and p-value threshold method. We also examined the association between genetically determined height (PRS251) and measured height (phenotype). We performed observational (phenotype) and genetic PRS251 association analyses of height and health-related outcomes. Results GWAS identified 6843 SNPs in 89 genomic regions with genome-wide significance, including 18 novel loci. These were the most strongly associated genetic loci (EFEMP1, DIS3L2, ZBTB38, LCORL, HMGA1, CS, and GDF5) previously reported to play a role in height. There was a positive association between PRS251 and measured height (p < 0.001). Of the 14 traits and 49 diseases analyzed, we observed significant associations of measured and genetically determined height with only eight traits (p < 0.05/[14 + 49]). Height was positively associated with body weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference but negatively associated with body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body fat, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.05/[14 + 49]). Conclusions This study contributes to the understanding of the genetic features of height and health-related outcomes in individuals of Han Chinese ancestry in Taiwan.

Background: Height is an important parameter of human in anthropology and forensic medicine. We can measure the height of an individual from forearm length (FAL). In this study, we found the relationship between FAL and height in medical students. Aims and Objective: The objective of the study was to find co-relation between FAL and height of the individuals (male and female medical students) and to obtain regression formula to determine the height from FAL. Materials and Methods: Height and FALs were measured in 200 medical students of 17–22 years age (100 males and 100 females) of N.R.S Medical College, Kolkata. For finding, the relationship between height and FAL linear regression analysis was used. Results: In our study, average height of the female students was 158.64±5.28 cm, whereas in male students average height was 168.97±6.33 cm. Mean FAL has been 26.63±1.72 and 23.72±1.44 cm, respectively, in case of male and female students. Difference of the mean height and mean length of forearm values between female and male students was statistically significant. The correlation coefficient (r) between height and FAL of dominant side has been, respectively, +0.93, +0.96, and +0.97 in case of male, female, and total students. According to the linear regression, there was a relation between height and FAL. Conclusion: From our study, it is evident that we may estimate the height of a person from measurement of FAL. In future studies may be carried out to estimate height of an individual from other body parameters also.

INTRODUCTION: Mammography is the screening test for breast carcinoma. The radiation dose received during this imaging has always been a point of consideration. The aim of this study is to search the relation of radiation dose received during mammographic imaging and the patient's age, menarche age, menopause age, childbirth history, total time of breastfeeding, height, weight, body mass index, mammographic breast density pattern and breast size. METHODS: Patients applying for mammography imaging were questioned about their menarche age, menopause status and age and their weight, height, and breast upper and inferior mammary fold sizes were measured. Their mammographic breast density and radiation doses were recorded. Statistical analysis was made with ANOVA and Pearson correlation. RESULTS: Breast size, weight, body mass index are found to be related to the radiation dose received during mammography. Age, number of given births, weight, body mass index and breast size have an effect on the mammographic breast density, which is a factor in both developing and diagnosing breast carcinoma. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Breast density on mammography can show differences according to the patient's reproductive history and body stature. Radiation dose taken during a mammography is found to be affected by body mass index and breast size. Breast tissue with increased adipose tissue is suitable for mammographic imaging in the aspect of radiation exposure.

Background: Taller individuals have been repeatedly found to have higher scores on cognitive assessments. Recent studies have suggested that this association can be explained by genetic factors, yet this does not preclude the influence of environmental or social factors that may change over time. We thus tested whether the association changed across time using data from four British birth cohorts (born in 1946, 1958, 1970, and 2001). Methods: In each cohort height was measured and cognition via verbal reasoning, vocabulary/comprehension, and mathematical tests; at ages 10/11 and 14/17 years (N=41,418). We examined associations between height and cognition at each age, separately in each cohort, and for each cognitive test administered. Linear and quantile regression models were used. Results: Taller participants had higher mean cognitive assessment scores in childhood and adolescence, yet the associations were weaker in later (1970 and 2001) cohorts. For example, the mean difference in height comparing the highest with lowest verbal cognition scores at 10/11 years was 0.57 SD (95% CI = 0.44–0.70) in the 1946 cohort, yet 0.30 SD (0.23–0.37) in the 2001 cohort. Expressed alternatively, there was a reduction in correlation from 0.17 (0.15–0.20) to 0.08 (0.06–0.10). This pattern of change in the association was observed across all ages and cognition measures used, was robust to adjustment for social class and parental height, and modeling of plausible missing-not-at-random scenarios. Quantile regression analyses suggested that these differences were driven by differences in the lower centiles of height, where environmental influence may be greatest. Conclusions: Associations between height and cognitive assessment scores in childhood-adolescence substantially weakened from 1957–2018. These results support the notion that environmental and social change can markedly weaken associations between cognition and other traits. Introduction: Thoracic vertebrae are a part of the vertebral column. The thoracic vertebrae have a body size between the cervical and lumbar vertebrae, which increase gradually from above downward and are characterised by the presence of facet joints for articulation with the head of the ribs on the side of the vertebral bodies. Aim: To measure the various morphometric parameters of different components of dry thoracic vertebrae and compare various components on the right and left-sides. Materials and Methods: The present observational study was carried on 100 dry human thoracic vertebrae for direct measurements of the vertebral body, pedicle and lamina. Using a digital Vernier calliper, all the parameters were measured. The data was entered in Microsoft Excel sheet. The mean and standard deviation (M±SD) of all parameters were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Student’s t-test was used for the comparison of morphometric dimensions of the right and left-sides. Results: In a typical thoracic vertebra, the mean Transverse Diameter (TD) was 25.58±2.34 mm, and the mean Anteroposterior Diameter (APD) of the vertebral body was 18.53±2.59 mm. The mean Anterior Height (AH) and Posterior Height (PH) of the body were 16.24±1.54 mm and 17.81±1.67 mm, respectively. The mean Pedicle Width (PW) was 3.75±0.98 mm on the right-side and 3.74±0.97 mm on the left-side. The mean Pedicle Height (PH) was 9.64±1.04 mm on the right-side and 9.68±1.14 mm on the left-side. The mean Lamina Height (LH) on the right-side was 17.07±2.15 mm and on the left-side was 17.20±1.98 mm. The right-side and left-side mean Lamina Widths (LW) were 5.26±0.94 mm and 5.13±0.85 mm, respectively. PW and PH and lamina thickness and LH measurements showed no statistically difference between right and left-sides. Conclusion: Designing implants and instruments using data from such researches can benefit the surgeon during preoperative planning.

Aim:The suitability of shear-wave elastography (SWE) analysis in muscle tissue has been demonstrated previously. There are no studies that have applied the two SWE methods to evaluate the multifidus muscle in patients with lumbar disc herniation. We aimed to evaluate multifidus muscle stiffness in patients with single-level unilateral lumbar disc herniation via two SWE methods.Methods:This cross-sectional study was carried out by examining the hospital records of patients who underwent lumbar MRI in July 2019. A total of 22 patients with single-level unilateral lumbar disc herniation underwent bilateral multifidus stiffness assessment via the two-dimensional SWE (2D-SWE) and point-SWE (p-SWE) methods.Results:The only measurement that demonstrated a significant difference between normoweight and overweight subjects was the hernia-side p-SWE value. On the hernia side, 2D-SWE and p-SWE were correlated. Age was determined to be an independent factor that significantly altered results for the hernia and non-hernia sides of both techniques, while weight was an independent factor for the hernia and non-hernia results of only the p-SWE technique.Conclusion:Lower muscle stiffness determined via 2D-SWE or p-SWE may have value in the diagnosis, follow-up, or management of patients with one-sided unilateral lumbar disc herniation. Age and weight appear to be important variables to consider when evaluating multifidus muscle stiffness values.

Introduction: A quality night sleep is essential for physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. The amount of sleep may have an effect on both weight and metabolism. In India, for the last few years, decline in sleep duration has been noted with an average sleep duration of 7 hours per night and one-third sleeping less than 7 hours per night. Televisions and smartphones which came into households as remarkable source of information and entertainment has caused the voluntary sleep restriction. Aim: To evaluate the sleep quality, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Blood Pressure (BP) of the healthcare students and also to find the correlation of sleep quality with BMI and BP. Material and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 138 healthy males and females healthcare students residing in hostel premises of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Karnataka, India from November to December 2021. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires administered to assess the sleep quality by adding the seven components of PSQI score ranging from 0 to 21. A weighing scale, sphygmomanometer, and stadiometer instruments were used to record the weight, BP, and height. Data were computed in International Business Management (IBM) Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 23.0 to analyse descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The mean age in present study was 23±0.72 years and 71 (51.4%) belonged to 22-23 years, majority 112 (81.2%) were female students. In present study, moderately obese students (33.15±0.72) and severely obese (35.39±0.10) had mean sleep score of 6.00±3.46 and 11 respectively indicating poor sleep quality. The underweight (16.91±1.17), normal weight (21.49±2.04) and overweight (26.49±1.48) had mean sleep score of 3.08±1.62, 3.08±1.12 and 4.66±3.05 respectively, which indicated good sleep quality. Students with hypotension, normal BP and hypertension stage-1 showed mean sleep score of 3.52, 2.71 and 4.77 respectively, showing good sleep quality. A statistically significant positive correlation of BMI was found with SBP (r-value 0.273, p-value 0.001) and DBP (r-value 0.181, p-value 0.033). Conclusion: BMI and BP were positively correlated with sleep quality. Therefore, creating awareness among healthcare students on healthy lifestyles such as exercise, healthy sleep and regular health supervision is essential to prevent pre-hypertension and maintain normal BMI status.

Introduction: The causes for short stature are multifactorial. The recombinant Growth Hormone (rGH) is used worldwide for its treatment however there is paucity of data on use of growth hormone in Indian Children. Aim: To study the effect of rGH in Indian children with short stature who were enrolled under ESIC scheme. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. Subjects who had short stature (≤2SD) and diagnosed to have Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) by stimulation test and other causes for which growth hormone was indicated were enrolled. All subjects received treatment at ESI PGIMSR Basaidarapur, New Delhi, India, from July 2016 to July 2020, without discontinuation for more than one week. The data regarding gain in height was collected at the end of first year and then at the end of second year. Height velocity and change in Height SD were calculated (Mean±Standard Deviations). The associations and correlations were calculated by Spearman correlation test. Results: This study included data of 27 children (19 male and 8 female) with short stature. The mean age at treatment initiation was 9.85 years±3.04. The most common aetiology for which growth hormone was started was Idiopathic GHD (IGHD) seen in (15/27) 55.5% followed by Multiple Pituitary Hormone Deficiency (MPHD) 18.5% (5/27). The mean height and height SD at baseline was 111.76 cm ±17.40 and -3.85±1.19 (-6.0 to -1.5), respectively. The mean bone age delay (chronological age‑bone age difference) was 40.96±25.58 months. The height velocity response was maximum during the first year of treatment (8.74±2.59 cm), declining to 8.13±2.30 cm in the second year. Correlation of the treatment response with age at treatment initiation, bone age delay and MPH was not significant. C onclusion: It was found that the growth velocity was significantly increased after one year of treatment. The study provides long term follow-up and response to rGH Treatment (rGHT) in Indian children enrolled under ESIC scheme however prospective studies with large sample size and longer follow‑up duration which can report final height outcomes are needed.

Objective: To determine the growth characteristics in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia visiting tertiary care hospital Karachi. Study Design: Cross-Sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Paediatrics Department, National Institute of Child Health, Karachi Pakistan, from Nov 2018 to May 2019. Methodology: All patients who visited the OPD were included in the study. Growth characteristics like underweight, normal BMI, overweight, obese and short stature were recorded. This information, along with the age of diagnosis, family history of CAH, parental consanguinity, family history of CAH or any abortion or prenatal death, were noted. Results: The mean age of the patients was 7.40±2.34 years. Out of 69 congenital adrenal hyperplasia patients, 41(59.4%) were males, and 28(40.6%) were females. The short suture was noted in 53(76.8%) patients. 19(27.5%) were underweight, 6(8.7%) were normal weight, 10(14.5%) were overweight, and 34(49.3%) patients w ere obese. Conclusion: A significant effect of congenital adrenal hyperplasia was documented in the children.

Background: The phenotypic plasticity in growth pattern that takes place over time is described as “secular trend”. The presence of secular changes evidences shifts in the environmental conditions under which a population lives. In this regard, the study of the population residing in the northeast of Argentine Patagonia is interesting because it underwent a rapid demographic growth and urban sprawl in the last 50 years. Objective: To compare height and body weight of two groups of boys and girls between 6 and 14 years old from Puerto Madryn (northeast of Argentine Patagonia) and estimate secular trend changes during the first decades of 21st century. Sample and Methods: Height and body weight of two groups of schoolchildren were compared. Data of the first group (G1) was collected in the 2001–2006 period, and of the second (G2) during 2014–2016. To analyze the comparison between groups, the Friedman and Wilcoxon test (p < 0.05) were used. Centile values (3rd, 50th and 97th) of the variables by sex and age in both groups were also calculated. Then, they were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Results: Both sexes showed statistically significant differences for height in all centiles and for body weight in the 50th and 97th centiles. G2 values were above G1 for most ages. Conclusion: Boys and girls from Puerto Madryn show a positive secular trend in linear and ponderal growth patterns. These changes, registered during the first decades of the 21st century, are possibly related to the urban sprawl of the city and the variations in the associated socio-environmental and demographic conditions.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Knowledge of clinical and laboratory differences between chromosomal and undefined causes aids etiological research on non-obstructive azoospermia. OBJECTIVE: Compare clinical and laboratory differences between men with non-obstructive azoospermia due to chromosomal anomalies versus undefined causes DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional retrospective study conducted at a public university hospital in Campinas (Brazil) METHODS: All men aged 20–40 years with non-obstructive azoospermia were included in the analysis. RESULTS: The 107 cases included 14 with Klinefelter syndrome (KS) (13%), 1 with mosaic KS, 4 with sex development disorders (2 testicular XX, 1 NR5A1 gene mutation, and 1 mild androgen insensitivity syndrome) (4%), 9 with other non-obstructive azoospermia etiologies (8%), and 79 with undefined causes. The 22 chromosomal anomaly cases (14 KS, 1 mosaic KS, 2 testicular XX, 4 sex chromosome anomalies, and 1 autosomal anomaly) were compared with the 79 undefined cause cases. The KS group had lower average testicular volume, shorter penile length, and lower total testosterone levels but greater height, arm span, serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, and gynecomastia frequency (absent in the undefined group and affecting more than half of the KS group). Patients with testicular XX DSD had LH, FSH, and penile length data intermediate between the KS and undefined cause groups, testicular volume similar to the KS group, and other data similar to the undefined group. CONCLUSION: Clinical and laboratory data differentiate men with non-obstructive azoospermia and chromosomal anomalies, particularly KS and testicular XX, from those with undefined causes or other chromosomal anomalies.

Background: The incidence of stunting in Indonesia is high (30.8%), therefore, regular monitoring of children’s height growth is needed. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the health service’s checks are limited, as well as schools as a potential place to monitor children’s growth are closed. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of online height measurement training for parents. Methods: This was a quantitative research with one group pre-and post-intervention design. It was conducted in a rural area in West Java, from August to November 2021. The parents of school students were included with a purposive sampling method. The training media was in the form of height measurement videos. The assessment of parents’ skills was an online check sheet with a Likert scale of 1–5 using the Whatsapp application. Analyzes were performed with the Paired T-Test. Results: In total, 86 parents were included, all of whom were mothers with the majority (51.2%) age range of 36–45 year. Parental education varied with most elementary school graduates (27.9%). Most mothers did not work (59.3%). As for the students, the majority were female students (60.5%) between 6–9 years old. Introduction: Handgrip muscle strength and endurance are non invasive simple diagnostic tool for diagnosis as well as to check prognosis in health and disease. But there are many factors like age, ethnicity etc., that influence the handgrip muscle strength and endurance. Failure to understand the determinants that influence the strength and endurance would decrease the reliability of these tests as diagnostic and prognostic tool. Aim: To evaluate the influence of anthropometric parameters like height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) on handgrip muscle strength and endurance. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, Assam, India, in the month of November and December 2019, after obtaining Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC) clearance. In this study 80 healthy young adults had given informed written consent to participate. After a brief history taking to ensure that participants met the inclusion criteria, height and weight were measured using measuring tape and weighing machine, respectively and BMI was calculated using the formula weight (kg)/height (m)2. Handgrip muscle strength and endurance was measured using handgrip dynamometer. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 16.0 version software was used to calculate mean of all variables, Pearson correlation coefficient to analyse the correlation of variables and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was used for analysis of significance. Background: Asian Indians often get predisposed to non-communicable diseases for which the “thin-fat” or “hidden obese” Indian phenotype is usually regarded responsible. In Europe, America and in some low-middle-income countries (LMICs) short height is often associated with a high risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Indians and particularly tribal Indian people are relatively short. Aim: To assess the associations of height with MetS risk factors among tribal people of India. Sample and methods: This study was conducted among tribes of India under life-style transition. The height range was 163.2 cm to 156.5 cm (males) and 151.6 cm to 146.9 cm (females). The participants were 1066 men and 1090 women aged 20 to 60 years. Anthropometric and metabolic markers included in the study were height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), skinfolds (biceps, triceps, sub-scapular, and supra-iliacal), fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and pulse rate (PR). Results: The highest correlation existed between height and WC (male: 0.21; female: 0.15). Correlations of body composition variables (BMI, WC, skinfolds) with MetS risk factors (FBG, SBP, DBP, PR) were not reliable (r < 0.30) among both sexes. St. Nicolas House Analysis revealed WC among males and WC and sub-scapular skinfolds among females sharing more connections with other nodes variables. Conclusions: Unlike the people of the wealthy and often obese social strata of low-middle-income countries, and in Europe and North America, height of tribal Indian populations is not associated with metabolic risk factors, such as hypertension, elevated fasting blood sugar, and central obesity. Rather than linked to the phenotype, obesity appears to be associated with an obesogenic environment. Public health policy should focus on problems associated with obesogenic environments.

Background: Interpretation of body mass index in children is quite different from that in adults which use standard weight status categories that are the same for all ages and for both men and women. Aims and Objective: The study was aimed at determining the prevalence of childhood obesity in Jos. Materials and Methods: A total of 371 children were enrolled in the study. Weight was taken with only light clothing and without foot wears. Height obtained without head-gears or shoes and the measuring flat tops pressed down to avoid errors due to tall hair. Body mass index were calculated for each subject as ratio of body weight to body height. All data were analyzed statistically and separately for different ages and the mean values for height against age, weight against age, height against weight and BMI for age was obtained with centiles of absolute deviations from the mean. Results: The age of the studied population ranged from 3 – 14 years with mean of 8.4 ± 2.8. Height of the children on the other hand ranged from 0.9 – 1.64 meters with mean value of 1.26 ± 0.15 and their weight ranged from 10 – 76 kg with mean value of 25.6 ± 9.2. Out of the 371 children studied, 14 (3.8%) were found to be underweight, 302 (81.4%) had healthy weight while 41 (11%) were at risk of overweight and 14 (3.8%) were overweight. In addition, the body mass index of girls was found to be significantly higher than those of boys at 12 and 13 years only. Conclusion: It is concluded that the prevalence of childhood obesity is high in Jos, North-central Nigeria.

Abstract Objective In contrast to childhood obesity, studies involving thin children are much fewer, especially in developed countries. Furthermore, most reports do not address the impact of childhood thinness on height velocity. This study investigated the prevalence of thinness and its effect on height velocity in schoolchildren in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Weight and height were measured in 29,410 schoolchildren (50.5% females), as part of the health assessment (academic year 2014–2015). The body mass index (BMI) was classified as normal, thinness, overweight, or obese using cutoffs established by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), World Health Organization, and Centers for Disease Control. Results The median age was 10.2 years (range, 3–19). Using the IOTF scale, one-quarter of the children aged 4–6 years and one-third of the children aged 7–9 years were thin (BMI ≤ 18.5 kg/m2). Thinness was less prevalent (8–10%) in adolescents. Group peak height velocity was delayed 1–3 years in thin children and was higher in children with excess body fat. In conclusion thinness was the highest (25–33%) in children aged 4–9 years of age and their peak height velocity was delayed 1–3 years when compared to the other children.

Stature estimation is an important early step during forensic analysis of human skeletal remnants. The aim of the present study was to obtain a linear regression formula for estimating stature from foramen magnum measurements of a central Indian population. The study includes 81 male and 55 female cadavers brought for medicolegal autopsies. The linear regression equations were derived from length (FML), breadth (FMB) and area (FMA) of foramen magnum. The regression model provided a 95% confidence interval of ± 11.1 cm, ± 10.4, and ± 10.5 cm and a correlation coefficient of 0.69, 0.75, and 0.74 for length, breadth, and area of male foramen magnum, respectively. Similarly, the regression model provided a 95% confidence interval of ± 13.4 cm, ± 11.4 cm, and ± 12.8 cm and a correlation coefficient of 0.45, 0.68, and 0.57 for length, breadth, and area of female foramen magnum. Compared to other studies, regression formulae based on the measurements of the foramen magnum provided slightly larger standard errors than that based on long bone lengths. The study indicates that foramen magnum measurements in relation with body stature show strong positive correlation, relatively moderate reliability in estimating stature, and some forensic value.

Children with chronic diseases, such as neurological, neuromuscular, respiratory, in particular cystic fibrosis, hereditary, metabolic, oncological, and congenital heart defects often suffer from malnutrition, often accompanied by stunted growth. The main reason leading to a change in nutritional status is inadequate intake of nutrients and energy with increased nutrient requirements or various eating problems. Lack of nutrient status correction and continued malnutrition contribute to major body changes that worsen disease progression, increase the risk of death and reduce patients’ quality of life. To fully cover the body’s nutrient needs, the use of specialized enteric nutrition is a priority. Sufficient clinical experience has been accumulated, confirming the high effectiveness of the use of enteral nutrition formulas in children with malnutrition through gastrointestinal feeding. It has been proved that this method of delivery of food is safe for patients, improves nutritional status, simplifies care, as well as reduces the duration of hospitalization, the frequency of respiratory and infectious complications and, consequently, the cost of treatment and rehabilitation. The article presents the assortment of “Nutriсia” formulas for enteral nutrition, which allows a differentiated approach to nutrition of patients depending on the clinical situation. Nutritional problems in patients with neurological disorders and ways of their correction are described in detail. The advantage of using domestic enteric nutrition through feeding tube for the correction of nutritional deficiencies. Timely assigned nutritional support is a highly effective method of correction of nutritional deficiencies or preventing their development in children with chronic diseases.

Background: A change in renal length may be evidence of many renal diseases. The aim of our study was to produce reference ranges for renal length in Sudanese children up to 5 years of age using ultrasonography. Methods and Results: This cross-sectional study was done to measure the normal size of kidneys in pediatrics up to 5 years of age using ultrasound. The study was conducted at Khartoum state in the Emergency Department of Albuluk Pediatric Hospital and Jafar Ibn Ouf Referral Pediatric Hospital from March to June 2018. The study included 101 Sudanese children up to 5 years with normal renal function tests and urine analysis. All ultrasound examinations of the kidneys were performed on a GE Logiq F6 Ultrasound Machine. The longitudinal measurement was obtained from the coronal section, while thickness and width were measured in the transverse section. The study revealed that mean measurements of the right kidney (RK) were 6.74±1.16cm, 3.12±0.68cm, and 2.59 ±0.58cm for length, width, and anteroposterior diameter, respectively, and for the left kidney (LK) - 6.98±1.10cm, 3.25±0.65cm, and 2.74±0.60cm, respectively. There was no significant difference in renal length according to gender. The study concluded that the renal length in pediatric up to 5 years old can be predicted by age using the following regression equations: RK length =0.0422×age+5.4182cm (R²=0.4636), LK length=0.0392×age+5.7472cm (R²=0.4539). Abstract Background Hypoglycaemia due to hyperinsulinism (HI) is the commonest cause of severe, recurrent hypoglycaemia in childhood. Cohort outcomes of HI remain to be described and whilst previous follow up studies have focused on neurodevelopmental outcomes, there is no information available on feeding and auxology. Aim We aimed to describe HI outcomes for auxology, medications, feeding and neurodevelopmental in a cohort up to age 5 years. Method We reviewed medical records for all patients with confirmed HI over a three-year period in a single centre to derive a longitudinal dataset. Results Seventy patients were recruited to the study. Mean weight at birth was − 1.0 standard deviation scores (SDS) for age and sex, while mean height at 3 months was − 1.5 SDS. Both weight and height trended to the population median over the follow up period. Feeding difficulties were noted in 17% of patients at 3 months and this reduced to 3% by 5 years. At age 5 years, 11 patients (15%) had neurodevelopmental delay and of these only one was severe. Resolution of disease was predicted by lower maximum early diazoxide dose (p = 0.007) and being born SGA (p = 0.009). Conclusion In a three-year cohort of HI patients followed up for 5 years, in spite of feeding difficulties and carbohydrate loading in early life, auxology parameters are normal in follow up. A lower than expected rate of neurodevelopmental delay could be attributed to prompt early treatment.

Abstract Background Mowat–Wilson syndrome (MWS; OMIM #235730) is a genetic condition caused by heterozygous mutations or deletions of the ZEB2 gene. It is characterized by moderate-severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, Hirschsprung disease and multiple organ malformations of which congenital heart defects and urogenital anomalies are the most frequent ones. To date, a clear description of the physical development of MWS patients does not exist. The aim of this study is to provide up-to-date growth charts specific for infants and children with MWS. Charts for males and females aged from 0 to 16 years were generated using a total of 2865 measurements from 99 MWS patients of different ancestries. All data were collected through extensive collaborations with the Italian MWS association (AIMW) and the MWS Foundation. The GAMLSS package for the R statistical computing software was used to model the growth charts. Height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and head circumference were compared to those from standard international growth charts for healthy children. Results In newborns, weight and length were distributed as in the general population, while head circumference was slightly smaller, with an average below the 30th centile. Up to the age of 7 years, weight and height distribution was shifted to slightly lower values than in the general population; after that, the difference increased further, with 50% of the affected children below the 5th centile of the general population. BMI distribution was similar to that of non-affected children until the age of 7 years, at which point values in MWS children increased with a less steep slope, particularly in males. Microcephaly was sometimes present at birth, but in most cases it developed gradually during infancy; many children had a small head circumference, between the 3rd and the 10th centile, rather than being truly microcephalic (at least 2 SD below the mean). Most patients were of slender build. Conclusions These charts contribute to the understanding of the natural history of MWS and should assist pediatricians and other caregivers in providing optimal care to MWS individuals who show problems related to physical growth. This is the first study on growth in patients with MWS.

Growth and development is a continuous process in the process of reaching adulthood, including the teenage stage. The problem that is often faced is physical change. Adolescent physical changes that appear are the increase in height and weight which affects the Body Mass Index (BMI). Height is one of the important things in adolescent growth and development. which is affected by genetic and environmental factors. The peak of growth in adolescents is different between boys and girls, so the pattern of height and BMI are also different. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in adolescent height based on age groups and BMI in Medical Faculty of UMM. This research is a comparative study by taking a sample of 100 medical students of UMM who have an age range of 17-20 years. The data to be taken is height measured using a MIC scale health scale ratio ratio. The measurement results have a numerical scale with units of centimeters (cm). Body mass index (BMI) is an index obtained from the division of body weight with height2. The measurement results are stated in kg / m2. All data obtained will be analyzed using the ANOVA comparative test. ANOVA test results generated p value in the two groups of students> 0.05 which concluded that the mean height of the student body based on age and BMI was not significantly different (not significant) statistically for both men and women. The conclusion from this study there were no differences in adolescent height based on age groups and BMI among medical students of UMM.

Background: Taller people have a lower risk of coronary heart disease but a higher risk of many cancers. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies in unrelated individuals (population MR) have suggested that these relationships are potentially causal. However, population MR studies are sensitive to demography (population stratification, assortative mating) and familial (indirect genetic) effects. Methods: In this study, we performed within-sibship MR analyses using 78,988 siblings, a design robust against demography and indirect genetic effects of parents. For comparison, we also applied population MR and estimated associations with measured height. Results: Within-sibship MR estimated that 1 SD taller height lowers the odds of coronary heart disease by 14% (95% CI: 3–23%) but increases the odds of cancer by 18% (95% CI: 3–34%), highly consistent with population MR and height-disease association estimates. There was some evidence that taller height reduces systolic blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which may mediate some of the protective effects of taller height on coronary heart disease risk. Conclusions: For the first time, we have demonstrated that the purported effects of height on adulthood disease risk are unlikely to be explained by demographic or familial factors, and so likely reflect an individual-level causal effect. Disentangling the mechanisms via which height affects disease risk may improve the understanding of the etiologies of atherosclerosis and carcinogenesis. Introduction: Estimation of stature is important in the process of identifying unknown and co-mingled human remains in mass casualties and natural disasters. Forensic experts are asked by the investigating officer to help to identify the person from dismembered parts of the body and skeletal remains. Estimation of stature is based on a principle that every body part bears more or less a constant relationship with height of an individual. Literature have documented that the hand parameters can be successfully used for stature estimation. Aim: To determine the relevance of hand parameters in the estimation of stature and also to derive a regression formula for stature from the hand parameters. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Government TD Medical College, Alappuzha, Kerala, India, from June 2017 to June 2018. A total of 210 postmortem cases aged above 20 years were included in present study for the comparison of stature, hand length and hand breadth based on age were measured using standard methodology. Average of measurements of right and left hands were taken. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise height, hand breadth and hand length. Categorical and continuous variables were expressed as mean±SD. Correlation was done using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test and predictive equations obtained using Karl Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: A total of 210 included 157 males and 53 females, and maximum subjects (78,37.1%) belonged to the age group 41-60 years. A mother's nutritional status and participation in household decision-making, a proxy for empowerment, are known determinants of improved nutrition and health outcomes for infants and young children; however, little is known about the association among adolescents. We examined the association between maternal nutritional status, decision-making autonomy and adolescent girls’ nutritional status. We analysed data of 711 mother–adolescent girl pairs aged 10–17 years from the Mion District, Ghana. Maternal nutritional status and decision-making autonomy were the independent variables while the outcomes were adolescent girls’ nutritional status as defined by anaemia, stunting and body mass index-for-age Z-score categories. Girl-level (age, menarche status and the frequency of animal-source food consumption), mother-level (age, education level, and monthly earnings) and household-level (wealth index, food security status and family size) covariates were adjusted for in the analysis. All associations were examined with hierarchical survey logistic regression. There was no association between maternal height and adolescent girls being anaemic, underweight or overweight/obese. Increasing maternal height reduced the odds of being stunted [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 0⋅92, 95 % CI (0⋅89, 0⋅95)] for the adolescent girl. Maternal overweight/obesity was positively associated with the girl being anaemic [OR 1⋅35, 95 % CI (1⋅06, 1⋅72)]. The adolescent girl was more than five times likely to be thin [OR 5⋅28, 95 % CI (1⋅64–17⋅04)] when the mother was underweight. Maternal decision-making autonomy was inversely associated with stunting [OR 0⋅88, 95 % CI (0⋅79, 0⋅99)] among the girls. Our findings suggest that intergenerational linkages of a mother's nutritional status are not limited to childhood but also during adolescence.
