Background: Sleep disorders significantly affect the quality of live and may impair cognitive development. Sleep disorders are reported to be common in chi ldr en wi th neurological diseases. However no report has evaluated the prevalence of sleep disorders among children chronic neurological diseases in Nigeria. This study therefore sort to determine the prevalence and types of sleep disorders among chi ldren wi th neurological diseases seen Child neurology clinic of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City. Subjects and methods: This was a que s t ionna i r e ba s ed c ros s sectional study. Parents/caregivers of children attending the Child Neurology Clinic of UBTH were recruited and a structured questionnaire was administered to evaluate the presence of sleep disorders in the children they have brought to the clinic. Response scale ranged from never, rarely, occasional, frequent and very frequent. Children were judged to have sleep disorder if the symptom were present f requently or very frequently. Variables were aggregated as simple proportions and differences determine using chi-square test. Result:One hundred and fifty children aged 17years and below consisting of 98 (65.3%) males and 52 (34.7%) were evaluated. The most common sleep disorders found include restlessness during sleep 68.7%, frequent awakening 66.0%, snoring 57.3%, excessive day time sleepiness 53.3% and sleep walking among others. Sleep disorders were more common in boys than in girls and those aged 5 years and below than older children. Conclusion: Sleep disorders are very common among children with neurological diseases. These problems have great potential of fur ther impairing cognitive development and quality of life in these children.

Background: Women report a heightened concern of (breast) cancer, relative to other chronic conditions. This experimental study investigated whether such heightened concern may be a function of availability bias. Methods: participants (N = 750; 100% female) were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions: in the recall condition, they were asked to name the health condition they feared most; in the recognition condition, they picked the disease they feared most out of a list of chronic conditions. Results: The probability of selecting cancer as the most frightening disease varied as a function of experimental condition χ2 (10) = 112.13, p < 0.001. Participants in the recall condition were almost twice as likely to select cancer as the most frightening disease (N = 240, 59.10%) as those in the recognition condition (N = 121, 35.20%), who most frequently selected neurological diseases as the most threatening. The majority of participants believed that cancer was the disease receiving the most media attention (86.27%) (prior to the COVID-19 pandemic), and the one accounting for the highest number of deaths among Spanish females (63.50%). Conclusions: altogether, these results provide experimental evidence that availability bias may partly account for misperceptions and a heightened fear of cancer, which may narrow the scope of women’s information-seeking and health-preventive behaviors.

Abstract Body mass index (BMI) is a crucial health indicator for obesity. With the progression of socio-economic status and alterations in lifestyle, an increasing number of global populations are at risk of obesity. Given the complexity and severity of neurological diseases, early identification of risk factors is vital for the diagnosis and prognosis of such diseases. In this study, we employed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis utilizing the most comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) data to date. We selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are unaffected by confounding factors and reverse causality as instrumental variables. These variables were used to evaluate the genetic and causal relationships between Body Mass Index (BMI) and various neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Ischemic Stroke (IS), and Epilepsy (EP). The Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) analysis indicated that there was no significant causal relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) indicators and PD (P-value = 0.511), AD (P-value = 0.076), ALS (P-value = 0.641), EP (P-value = 0.380). However, a causal relationship was found between BMI indicators and MS (P-value = 0.035), and IS (P-value = 0.000), with the BMI index positively correlated with the risk of both diseases. The Cochran’s Q test for MR-IVW showed no heterogeneity in the MR analysis results between the BMI index and the neurological diseases (P > 0.05). The Egger intercept test for pleiotropy revealed no horizontal pleiotropy detected in any of the neurological diseases studied (P > 0.05). It was found that there was no causal relationship between BMI and PD, AD, ALS, EP, and a genetic causal association with MS, and IS. Meanwhile, the increase in BMI can lead to a higher risk of MS and IS, which reveals the critical role of obesity as a risk factor for specific neurological diseases in the pathogenesis of the diseases.

Objective: To determine the contribution of gait analysis to the differentiation and diagnosis of these diseases by examining the walking videos of individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) using the deep learning method. Materials and Methods: A hybrid system based on Convolutional Neural Networks was developed for the detection of MS and PD based on gait analysis. The patients were walked on a flat surface of approximately 14 meters and video recordings were taken from the front, back and both sides during walking. Videos of a total of 28 patients, 12 PD and 16 MS patients, were used in the study. Results: In the study, the data was analyzed using machine learning techniques and the best accuracy score was obtained as 87.5%. Conclusion: The accuracy rate of machine learning models in the diagnosis, follow-up and treatment process of patients such as MS, PD and other neurological diseases has been examined and it has been concluded that it is inevitable that these methods will be used much more over time.

Background: Numerous studies have confirmed the therapeutic efficacy of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in addressing neurologic disorders. To date, several preconditioning strategies have been designed to improve the therapeutic potential of these stem cells. This study was designed to evaluate the preconditioning effect of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) on the expression of main trophic factors in human BM-MSCs. Materials and Methods: Initially, the identity of stem cells was confirmed through the evaluation of surface markers and their capacity for osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation using flow cytometry and differentiation assay, respectively. Subsequently, stem cells were subjected to different concentrations of DMF for 72 hours and their viability was defined by MTT assay. Following 72-hour preconditioning period with 10 µM DMF, gene expression was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR. Results: Our findings demonstrated that the isolated stem cells expressed cardinal MSC surface markers and exhibited osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation potential. MTT results confirmed that 10 µM DMF was an optimal dose for maintaining cell viability. Preconditioning of stem cells with DMF significantly upregulated the expression of BDNF, NGF, and NT-3. Despite a slight increase in transcript level of GDNF and VEGF after DMF preconditioning, this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that DMF preconditioning can enhance the expression of major neurotrophic factors in human BM-MSCs. Given the curative potential of both BM-MSCs and DMF in various neurological disease models and preconditioning outcomes, their combined use may synergistically enhance their neuroprotective properties.

The deletion of the gene coding for poly(ADPribose) polymerase-1 (PARP1) or its pharmacological inhibition protects mice against cerebral ischemia and Parkinson’s disease. In sharp contrast, PARP1 inhibitors are in clinical use for the eradication of vulnerable cancer cells. It appears that excessive PARP1 activation is involved in a specific cell death pathway called parthanatos, while inhibition of PARP1 in cancer cells amplifies DNA damage to a lethal level. Hence, PARP1 plays a context-dependent role in cell fate decisions. In addition, it appears that PARP1 plays an ambiguous role in organismal aging.

Introduction: B lymphocytes are responsible for humoral immune response. They play a crucial role in the development of the immune response and are essential in preventing infections as well as autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. They also constitute an important therapeutic target and are used in genetic and immunological therapies. In some cases, B cells can contribute to the pathogenesis of various diseases. Aim of study: The aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on the diverse role of B lymphocytes in selected rheumatic and neurological diseases using available scientific literature. Materials and Methods: This review was conducted using Pubmed and Google Scholar databases from 2009-2023. The research strategy was based on the following terms: B lymphocytes, monoclonal antibodies, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, central nervous system damage, optic neuritis, Devic's syndrome. Conclusion: B lymphocytes play a significant role in the pathogenesis of many rheumatic and neurological diseases, therefore they represent a target for modern therapies. Their role and potential use are complex and differ depending on the specific disease entity. Further research will allow for the development of new targeted therapies, giving hope for improving the effectiveness of patient treatment.

Background: Sialorrhea also known as drooling, literally means excessive saliva flow. In patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, and stroke. drooling or sialorrhea conditions can be a problem in their lives. In patients with neurological disorders, they experience impaired coordination of facial and mouth muscle movement. Purpose: To describe a review comprehensive management of sialorrhea in neurological, then quality of life can be improved. Reviews: literature search was done thorough literature search between 2008-2020 was done using Science direct, Pubmed and Google Scholar. Conclusion: Treatment for sialorrhea includes non-medical therapy, medical therapy, botulinum toxin, radiotherapy and surgical treatment. Oral medicine specialist dentists have a role in the care of sialorrhea patients with neurological disorders in terms of oral care related as a result of sialorrhea such as perioral dermatitis.

Introduction: Hericium erinaceus is a medicinal and culinary mushroom that is widely present in the countries of East Asia. Bioactive compounds derived from the fruiting body or its mycelium have many properties, including: antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, as well as hypolipidemic properties. It also has the potential to treat neurological disorders as it contains neurotrophic compounds that can cross the blood-brain barrier. Aim of the study: The aim of this work is to review scientific research on the potential properties of the H. erinaceus in treating diseases of the nervous system. Results: Many studies have shown that Hericium erinaceus can bring the desired effects as a complementary treatment and be an alternative in the treatment of depressive and cognitive disorders and, due to its strong neuroprotective nature, be used in Alzheimer's disease or in post-traumatic brain injury. Most of the cited studies concern experiments carried out on animal models. Conclusion: Due to the evidence of potentially neuroprotective properties of H. erinaceus, there is a need for further clinical trials in humans.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 new infectious disease was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Thereafter, it has extensively spread causing global pandemic. It was named as corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by WHO in February 2020. Other than the well described COVID-19 respiratory and cardiac manifestations, the neurological manifestations are not that uncommon. Objectives: In this review, we are trying to shed light on this pandemic disease and its neurological presentation, which might enable neurologists to pick up and promptly deal with such cases. The COVID-19 neurological presentation can include many diverse symptoms and rapid clinical deterioration can be related to development of neurological affection. Moreover, the patients with already neurological diseases, when affected by the COVID-19 showed worse prognosis. Conclusion: Enhanced research is needed to illustrate and explain and hence development and tailoring adjusted treatment for the neurological manifestation for better management of such cases to improve the outcome.

A female child, 1 year-old and 2 months, diagnosed with multiple neurological conditions, including myelomeningocele and operated hydrocephalus, was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 in October 2020 and hospitalized in our clinic. At the time of the onset of the disease, the patient had a febrile episode, laboratory blood tests showed a slightly increased biological inflammatory syndrome, and mixed pneumonia was described radiologically. Thus, antibiotic treatment was initiated, with laboratory tests and control imaging within normal limits after several days of admission. Being an institutionalized child, according to the epidemiological recommendations of that time, she was hospitalized in our clinic during the 14 days of the illness. Thus, on the 15th day of the disease she was discharged, with negative SARS-CoV-2 control RT-PCR, with good general condition, afebrile over 10 days.

Infodemiology is a research discipline that investigates parameters of information distribution in order to support public health and public policy. Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia, is commonly used as a source of information for infodemiological studies. Using Pageviews analysis, we descriptively assessed the total monthly number of views of the Wikipedia articles in English describing main neurological diseases in the period from January 2018 to July 2020. Our results show a general trend of a decrease in interest in neurological disease-related pages throughout years and especially during the burst of interest towards coronavirus. The monitoring of infodemiological indicators shall be prioritized to reshape global campaigns and tailored advocacy programs.

Abstract Background It has been well established that the TMEM106B gene rs1990622 variant was a frontotemporal dementia (FTD) risk factor. Until recently, growing evidence highlights the role of TMEM106B in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, it remains largely unclear about the role of rs1990622 variant in AD. Methods Here, we conducted comprehensive analyses including genetic association study, gene expression analysis, eQTLs analysis, and colocalization analysis. In stage 1, we conducted a genetic association analysis of rs1990622 using large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets from International Genomics of Alzheimer’s Project (21,982 AD and 41,944 cognitively normal controls) and UK Biobank (314,278 participants). In stage 2, we performed a gene expression analysis of TMEM106B in 49 different human tissues using the gene expression data in GTEx. In stage 3, we performed an expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) analysis using multiple datasets from UKBEC, GTEx, and Mayo RNAseq Study. In stage 4, we performed a colocalization analysis to provide evidence of the AD GWAS and eQTLs pair influencing both AD and the TMEM106B expression at a particular region. Results We found (1) rs1990622 variant T allele contributed to AD risk. A sex-specific analysis in UK Biobank further indicated that rs1990622 T allele only contributed to increased AD risk in females, but not in males; (2) TMEM106B showed different expression in different human brain tissues especially high expression in cerebellum; (3) rs1990622 variant could regulate the expression of TMEM106B in human brain tissues, which vary considerably in different disease statuses, the mean ages at death, the percents of females, and the different descents of the selected donors; (4) colocalization analysis provided suggestive evidence that the same variant contributed to AD risk and TMEM106B expression in cerebellum. Conclusion Our comprehensive analyses highlighted the role of FTD rs1990622 variant in AD risk. This cross-disease approach may delineate disease-specific and common features, which will be important for both diagnostic and therapeutic development purposes. Meanwhile, these findings highlight the importance to better understand TMEM106B function and dysfunction in the context of normal aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Marriage affects people's happiness and lifetime. Researches support the idea that married people are more healthier and happier and they have longevity than other people (single, divorced and widowed). In the world, incidence of neurological diseases increase day by day. They affects patients, their families and societies. However, marital status, marital relationship, and spouses situation affect patient's acceptance to and cope with illness. In neurological diseases such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD) and stroke patients, married patients are more healthier and have long life span than other patients. Then, in married patients, diseases such as MS and epilepsy can be risk factor to divorce or negatively affects their spouses or marital relationship. In the study, we aimed to examine the relation between neurological diseases and marital status, divorce, spouses' situation and marital relationship.

Objective: Neurological disorders are increasing, because of demographic and epidemiologic changes occurring in both developed and developing countries. This study was aimed at examining and clustering lifestyle factors in an Italian sample of neurological outpatients. Material and Methods: A total of 153 subjects were recruited from the ambulatory Unit Operative Complex of neurology, of S. Eugenio Hospital in Rome. This study was conducted from January, 2017 to May, 2019. Body Mass Index (general obesity) and Waist Circumference (abdominal obesity) were used as outcome measures. Lifestyle behaviours were assessed via questionnaires. Results: The percentage of overweight/obesity was74.0% (77.0% in males and 70.0% in females); whereas, the percentage of subjects with abdominal obesity (67.0%) was significantly higher in females than in males (76.0% vs 60.0%, p-value= 0.038). Also, among patients suffering from neurological diseases there was a significant prevalence of: (i) males, (ii) subjects with low education levels, iii) elderly adults (aged over 75), and iv) people having a significantly lower percentage of appropriate hours of sleep. Three clusters were identified for males and four for females, according to lifestyles. The ‘unhealthy habits’ cluster, dominant among males (38.4%), was characterized by high prevalence of overweight/obese, and abdominal obese subjects; high prevalence of wine and alcoholic beverages consumers, high prevalence of inactive subjects; especially in females and high prevalence of neurological diseases among males. Conclusion: The clusters were identified according to lifestyles, and the main, important findings showed a high prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle clustering was dominant among male, elderly people with neurological diseases.

Summary: Background: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes 37 genes necessary for synthesizing 13 essential subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation system. mtDNA alterations are known to cause mitochondrial disease (MitD), a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders that often present with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Understanding the nature and frequency of mtDNA alterations in health and disease could be a cornerstone in disentangling the relationship between biochemical findings and clinical symptoms of brain disorders. This systematic review aimed to summarize the mtDNA alterations in human brain tissue reported to date that have implications for further research on the pathophysiological significance of mtDNA alterations in brain functioning. Methods: We searched the PubMed and Embase databases using distinct terms related to postmortem human brain and mtDNA up to June 10, 2021. Reports were eligible if they were empirical studies analysing mtDNA in postmortem human brains. Findings: A total of 158 of 637 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were clustered into the following groups: MitD (48 entries), neurological diseases (NeuD, 55 entries), psychiatric diseases (PsyD, 15 entries), a miscellaneous group with controls and other clinical diseases (5 entries), ageing (20 entries), and technical issues (5 entries). Ten entries were ascribed to more than one group. Pathogenic single nucleotide variants (pSNVs), both homo- or heteroplasmic variants, have been widely reported in MitD, with heteroplasmy levels varying among brain regions; however, pSNVs are rarer in NeuD, PsyD and ageing. A lower mtDNA copy number (CN) in disease was described in most, but not all, of the identified studies. mtDNA deletions were identified in individuals in the four clinical categories and ageing. Notably, brain samples showed significantly more mtDNA deletions and at higher heteroplasmy percentages than blood samples, and several of the deletions present in the brain were not detected in the blood. Finally, mtDNA heteroplasmy, mtDNA CN and the deletion levels varied depending on the brain region studied. Interpretation: mtDNA alterations are well known to affect human tissues, including the brain. In general, we found that studies of MitD, NeuD, PsyD, and ageing were highly variable in terms of the type of disease or ageing process investigated, number of screened individuals, studied brain regions and technology used. In NeuD and PsyD, no particular type of mtDNA alteration could be unequivocally assigned to any specific disease or diagnostic group. However, the presence of mtDNA deletions and mtDNA CN variation imply a role for mtDNA in NeuD and PsyD. Heteroplasmy levels and threshold effects, affected brain regions, and mitotic segregation patterns of mtDNA alterations may be involved in the complex inheritance of NeuD and PsyD and in the ageing process. Therefore, more information is needed regarding the type of mtDNA alteration, the affected brain regions, the heteroplasmy levels, and their relationship with clinical phenotypes and the ageing process. (1) Introduction: Neurologic music therapy (NMT) is a non-pharmacological approach of interaction through the therapeutic use of music in motor, sensory and cognitive dysfunctions caused by damage or diseases of the nervous system. (2) Objective: This study aimed to critically appraise the available literature on the application of particular NMT techniques in the rehabilitation of geriatric disorders. (3) Methods: PubMed, ScienceDirect and EBSCOhost databases were searched. We considered randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from the last 12 years using at least one of the NMT techniques from the sensorimotor, speech/language and cognitive domains in the therapy of patients over 60 years old and with psychogeriatric disorders. (4) Results: Of the 255 articles, 8 met the inclusion criteria. All papers in the final phase concerned the use of rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) (sensorimotor technique) in the rehabilitation of both Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients (six studies) and stroke patients (SPs) (two studies). (5) Conclusion: All reports suggest that the RAS technique has a significant effect on the improvement of gait parameters and the balance of PD patients and SPs, as well as the risk of falls in PD patients.

How eating gluten may be associated with various disorders of human health including neurological diseases remains a topic of discussion in the academic and civil circles. Application of gluten-free diet is of particular interest for the complex management of diseases such as autism, schizophrenia, and borderline neurological disorders including chronic fatigue syndrome, various cognitive impairments, depression, etc. The article presents a review of the studies of efficacy of gluten-free diet in patients with various neurological diseases and psychiatric disorders; the potential mechanisms of the neurotropic action of gluten are also examined.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have previously been emerged as key players in a series of biological processes. Dysregulation of lncRNA is correlated to human diseases including neurological disorders. Here, we developed a multi-step bioinformatics analysis to study the functions of a particular Down syndrome-associated gene DSCR9 including the lncRNAs. The method is named correlation-interaction-network (COIN), based on which a pipeline is implemented. Co-expression gene network analysis and biological network analysis results are presented. Methods We identified the regulation function of DSCR9, a lncRNA transcribed from the Down syndrome critical region (DSCR) of chromosome 21, by analyzing its co-expression genes from over 1700 sets and nearly 60,000 public Affymetrix human U133-Plus 2 transcriptional profiling microarrays. After proper evaluations, a threshold is chosen to filter the data and get satisfactory results. Microarray data resource is from EBI database and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network information is incorporated from the most complete network databases. PPI integration strategy guarantees complete information regarding DSCR9. Enrichment analysis is performed to identify significantly correlated pathways. Results We found that the most significant pathways associated with the top DSCR9 co-expressed genes were shown to be involved in neuro-active ligand-receptor interaction (GLP1R, HTR4, P2RX2, UCN3, and UTS2R), calcium signaling pathway (CACNA1F, CACNG4, HTR4, P2RX2, and SLC8A3), neuronal system (KCNJ5 and SYN1) by the KEGG, and GO analysis. The A549 and U251 cell lines with stable DSCR9 overexpression were constructed. We validated 10 DSCR9 co-expression genes by qPCR in both cell lines with over 70% accuracy. Conclusions DSCR9 was highly correlated with genes that were known as important factors in the developments and functions of nervous system, indicating that DSCR9 may regulate neurological proteins regarding Down syndrome and other neurological-related diseases. The pipeline can be properly adjusted to other applications.

Being the predominant cause of disability, neurological diseases have received much attention from the global health community. Over a billion people suffer from one of the following neurological disorders: dementia, epilepsy, stroke, migraine, meningitis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, prion disease, or brain tumors. The diagnosis and treatment options are limited for many of these diseases. Aptamers, being small and non-immunogenic nucleic acid molecules that are easy to chemically modify, offer potential diagnostic and theragnostic applications to meet these needs. This review covers pioneering studies in applying aptamers, which shows promise for future diagnostics and treatments of neurological disorders that pose increasingly dire worldwide health challenges.

In the last two decades, nanotechnology has acquired a new dimension in medicine and healthcare. Applications of nanotechnology to neurology complement other approaches for the research, diagnosis and treatment of the neurological diseases/disorders (nanoneurology). The clinical challenges imposed by the central nervous system (CNS) and the obstacles faced by anything designed to target and interface with CNS are a result of its unique anatomophysiology. In this context, we can mention the possibilities of nanoparticles (drugs, contrast agents) to cross through blood-brain-barrier. Once entered in CNS, the nanoparticles need to selectively target its intended cells or ligands and only then carry out its primary functions. A promising area that has seen marked progress involves nanoengineered technologies for imaging anatomofunctional structures and for tracking transplanted stem cells and related applications with high effi cacy and at high spatial resolutions. Several “nano” formulations are being investigated as potential carries for drug of various classes to treat the neurological diseases (e.g.: demyelinating, degenerative, stroke, epilepsy). Other potential future applications of nanotechnology include the use of nanoengineered functional scaffold systems for promoting neural regeneration following both acute and chronic neurological injury. Applications of nanotechnology to neurology and to neuroscience more broadly, represent emerging next-generation basic research, diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Most patients who abuse alcohol do not consider their alcoholic habits a problem or deliberately conceal them preferring to visit therapists with somatic complaints. A screening epidemiological study was carried out at neurology centers in Kazan and Yaroslavl. The study included 300 neurology patients (152 men and 148 women) aged 23--75 years. Th patients completed the AUDIT-C and CAGE questionnaires and answered the question: "If you considered yourself having a drinking problem, whose advice would you rather seek: of your physician, a narcologist or yourself?" 19% of women and 78% were screened positive on AUDIT-C. Personal physician was preferred by 39% of men, narcologist by 17%; 25% of women would go to personal physician, and 19% to narcologist. It was found that neurologists underestimated the urgency of alcohol abuse problem among their patients and their involvement in the treatment.

Background: Cellular transplantation is a promising treatment strategy for neurological diseases. Objective: To report the results of intrathecal hematopoietic stem cell therapy in different neurological diseases in the past 6 years in a single center. Methods: From October 2011 to September 2018, 220 patients with various neurological diseases were transplanted intrathecally by their bone marrow stem cells. To have a longer follow up, we only reported the first 80 patients, transplanted up to July 2015—10 patients had spinal cord injuries and paralysis, 12 had advanced Parkinson’s disease, 28 had cerebral palsy, 7 had hypoxic brain damage, 2 had autism, 4 had multiple sclerosis, 5 had progressive cerebellar atrophy, and 12 had other neurological diseases. The patients were admitted to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. On the first day, 50–200 (median 100) mL bone marrow was aspirated from the patients’ posterior iliac crests, mixed with 120 mL culture media (RPMI), and 12 mL heparin. The samples were then transferred to immunology lab in cold box. Mononuclear cells (MNCs) were separated by a Ficoll-Hypaque gradient, washed, and suspended in ringers. Cell viability was assessed with trypan blue viability test. Transplantation was performed 3–4 hours after bone marrow collection. 5–10 mL of the cerebrospinal fluids were aspirated and about 20 mL MNCs (containing stem cells) in ringers were injected intrathecally (IT). The patients were laid down on their back for 4–5 hours. The median number of MNCs was 4×107 (range 1–450×107). The median viability of the cells was 90% (range 60%–98%). The patients received intravenous ceftriaxone every 12 hours and were discharged from the hospital few days after autologous stem cell therapy. Results: We noted clinical improvements in 9 of 12 patients with Parkinson’s disease, 20 of 28 patients with cerebral palsy, 6 of 7 patients with hypoxic brain damage, 2 of 4 patients with multiple sclerosis, and 4 of 5 patients with cerebellar atrophy. The improvements were noted after 2–4 weeks of cell therapy. There were no improvements in patients with spinal cord injury and complete paralysis and those with autism. There were variable improvements in other patients treated. Conclusion: Most patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, hypoxic brain damage, progressive cerebellar atrophy, and kernicterus neuropathy reported clinical effects of this safe intervention resulting in better functioning and an increased quality of life.

Bee Venom (BV) has long been used in Korea to relieve pain symptoms and to treat inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The underlying mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions of BV have been proved to some extent. Additionally, recent clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that BV and BV-derived active components are applicable to a wide range of immunological and neurodegenerative diseases, including autoimmune diseases and Parkinson’s disease. These effects of BV are known to be mediated by modulating immune cells in the periphery, and glial cells and neurons in the central nervous system. This review will introduce the scientific evidence of the therapeutic effects of BV and its components on several immunological and neurological diseases, and describe their detailed mechanisms involved in regulating various immune responses and pathological changes in glia and neurons.

La pemphigoïde bulleuse (PB) est une maladie auto-immune spécifique d'organe, qui peut être associée à de nombreuses pathologies, notamment à des maladies neurologiques dégénératives, comme la maladie de Parkinson et la maladie d'Alzheimer. Des études ont suggéré la possibilité de réactions immunitaires croisées selon le phénomène ''epitope spreading''. La survenue de dermatose bulleuse a toujours suivi l'apparition de la maladie neurologique à des intervalles allant de quelques mois à un maximum de quelques années. Alors s'agitil d'une association occasionnelle ou de causalité? Il a été suggéré que la consommation de médicaments, les lésions de décubitus, les événements traumatiques et le vieillissement de l'immunité peuvent être des facteurs déclenchants de BP au cours de maladies neurologiques. Nous rapportons le cas d'un patient de 93 ans, ayant comme antécédent une maladie de parkinson stade avancé depuis 10 ans, qui a été hospitalisé pour la prise en charge d'une pemphigoïde bulleuse typique, confirmé à l'histologie et l'immunohistochimie. Le patient a été traité par corticoïdes oraux. Après une semaine de traitement, le patient est décédé dans un tableau de choc septique. Les pathologies neurologiques constituent un véritable facteur de risque de survenue de PB. Cette dernière pourrait être considéré comme marqueur de désordre neurologique. Ces associations sont d'un intérêt majeur, car ils peuvent jouer un rôle dans l'étiopathogénie de la PB et peuvent participer à la compréhension de la base pour ces maladies neurodégénératives.
