Aggressiveness, assertiveness, and sexual deviance: An empirical-quantitative examination of Stoller's perversion theoryObjectives: The main aim of the present study was to empirically examinate the psychodynamic-founded perversion theory of Robert D. Stoller (1979), particularly his assumption of a transformation of aggressive impulses into sexual deviant fantasies due to traumatic experiences. Methods: In the present study different aspects of the theory were examined by using a sample (N = 954) of individuals convicted of sexually motivated offenses who had been clinically and forensically assessed between 2002 and 2018 at the Federal Evaluation Centre for Violent and Sexual Offenders (FECVSO) in the Austrian Prison System. As a part of the psychological testing procedure, German-speaking questionnaires for the assessment of aggressiveness and assertiveness were applied. Results: The results indicated that participants with a diagnosis of paraphilia showed significantly less spontaneously expressed aggression and less social competence compared to individuals without such a diagnosis. Conclusions: The findings of the present study are in line with the core assumptions of Stoller's perversion theory by demonstrating an inverse relationship between the diagnosis of paraphilia and self-reported aggression.

This paper intends to analyse the current political and social situation in Brazil and show how this context has influenced the management of the public health crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, the authors conducted an investigation into Brazil's historical roots, which have not only engendered deep class differences but, also, social psychopathologies such as dissociation and perversion. Finally, this paper presents a symbolic analysis of social exclusion and how the mythical figure of Sophia can inspire a renewed movement of inclusion and tolerance.Cet article se propose d’analyser la situation politique et sociale actuelle au Brésil et de montrer comment ce contexte a influencé la gestion de la crise sanitaire publique générée par la COVID-19. Dans ce but, les autrices ont conduit une enquête approfondie sur les racines historiques du Brésil, racines qui ont engendré non seulement de profondes différences de classes mais également des psychopathologies sociales, telles la dissociation et la perversion. A este fin, las autoras llevaron a cabo una investigación sobre las raíces históricas de Brasil, las cuales, no solamente han generado profundas diferencias de clase, sino también psicopatologías sociales como disociación y perversión. Objective: The main tasks of this study are as follows: to substantiate the interdependence of perversion as a form of violence and the human ego in the context of hybrid warfare; to prove the existence of perversion as a form of violence against a person in the context of hybrid warfare in Ukraine (personal perversion); to describe the alteration of ego states as conditions for effective human self-regulatory activity in the context of hybrid warfare. Background: Hybrid warfare, including the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, as a phenomenon, has been widely studied both abroad and in Ukraine. However, there are very few works on the psychological impact of such a war. There are currently no works on disorders of human self-regulatory activity in the context of hybrid warfare, which makes the study unique and relevant. Method: The study used a combination of various methods, in particular, structural-clinical interviews, psychological counseling and therapeutic meetings, data analysis. Data were collected for 2014-2020. The total number of participants was 55 people aged 25 to 63 years, with 70% female and 30% male. Results: The latent tension and denial of hybrid warfare result in a gradual increase of neurotization, which is in 95% of cases passes into a neurosis state with concomitant manifestations of symptoms. There is also a deterioration in psychological well-being and phylogenetic disorders (erogenous dysfunction in men, uncontrolled neurotic masturbation in women). Disorders of the mental level of self-regulation determine the manifestation of the mental content of perversion, in which perversion takes on the character of intrapersonal functioning. Conclusion: The combination of disorders of the physical, mental and personal levels of the self-regulatory activity of the psyche increased perverse tendencies in social and political life, which provoked a high rate of psychotization of the entire society and an increase in deficit characterological manifestations of each individual.

Treatment in hypnosis can improve the sexual relationship of partners, remove tension in their interpersonal relationships.

What transgression represents for them? Based on clinical experience in a correctional center, this article takes a closer look about prisoner, incarcerated after having committed criminal acts. This clinical material could help to raise a new perspective around modern psychopathology. What is the act's difference between neurosis, perversion, borderline and psychosis? Our research will try to differentiate the psychic issues.

Purpose As the clamour within the drug treatment field in the UK – and throughout much of Europe – increases, leading agencies are arguing for a review of the current legislation and a change in focus away from criminal justice and towards a more public health understanding of addiction. Therapeutic communities have found themselves united with many drug users-led campaigns to argue for a wholesale restructuring of the legislative, policy and funding arrangements which recognises the role of recovery-oriented interventions within the mix. Given these on-going debates, it is perhaps useful to understand how the current arrangements were established [1]. Design/methodology/approach In 1850s, the sale of opium – like alcohol – was largely unregulated. It was widely used, in a variety of preparations, by all classes for medical and non-medical purposes. A pennyworth of opium was as likely (perhaps more likely) as a pound of potatoes to find its way into the weekly shopping basket. Findings By the 1920s, the Fu Manchu novels of Sax Rohmer – with their tales of innocent English virgins being seduced into crime and sexual perversion by an evil Chinese genius who lurked within the opium dens of Edwardian Britain – had redefined opium as a drug of the outside, the deadly, an agent in the enslavement of innocence. Originality/value This dramatic change was largely brought about by the introduction of an array of new medications and a move away from traditional “herbal” remedies. This change was accelerated by the experiences of the First World War and underpinned by the print media and laid the foundations of the legislation and policy of the present day.

The latent iron deficit is always preceded to iron-deficient anaemia. A research aim was to study occurrence rate of clinical signs of latent iron deficit in adolescents. 280 individuals aged from 17 to 21 were involved into study. A questionnaire method with a series of questions was used to identify signs of sideropenic and anaemic syndromes, as well as questions to identify the causes of iron deficiency. Statistical processing was carried out by applying the Microsoft office Excel 2013. Among the clinical signs of syderopenic syndrome in the students we observed the predominance of olfactory perversion (33,21%), muscular weakness, pain gastrocnemius muscles (29,64%), taste perversion (16,79%), changes in the state of hair and nails (46,79%). This was mainly typical for female individuals. 33,75% of women had polymenorea, and 37,2% out of the were diagnosed to have a syderopenic syndrome. The individuals complaining on gastrointestinal problems (two or more) demonstrated a sharp increase in the frequency syderopenic syndrome occurance (by 26,8%) as compared to the respondents without the complaints.

The ostensibly bizarre crime of braid-cutting invited occasional alienist inferences from the late 1850s onwards, until it entered mid-1880s police profiles and forensic-psychiatric taxonomies as a corollary of perversion, specifically sadism and fetishism. Cases were rare, but were reported as late as the mid-1930s and enduringly cited as encompassing a staple variety of fetishism. This note briefly reconstructs entries in German, French and English forensic psychiatry, sexual psychopathology and psychoanalysis.

This article charts a course from the literature of the classical world through to a select number of classic texts in sociology by Marx, Weber and Bauman, and some more recent psychoanalytically informed studies, to offer a metaphor for the vicissitudes of structure and fluidity in this time of turbulence and extremes. The episode from Homer’s Odyssey featuring the passage of Odysseus and his men between the twin monsters of Scylla and Charybdis is seen as offering an image of the two tendencies of our time towards extreme forms of fluidity in the form of the liberalisation of markets and marketisation of most private and public sectors on the one hand, and a proliferation and mutation of bureaucratic practices seen as an aspect of structural conditions on the other. The dysfunctional relation and polarisation of these tendencies and their consequences are analysed in turn as leading first to a culture of narcissism (Lasch, 1978), then to perversion (Long, 2008; Hoggett, 2010) at a social as well as a socially constructed individual level. The article makes use of free association and amplification in working with images and metaphors.

Objective BDSM is a overlapping acronym that refers to the practices of bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism. The American Psychiatric Association “depathologized” kinky sex – including cross-dressing, fetishism, and BDSM –, despite retaining a clinical justification, in the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Henceforth, the paraphilias are considered “other sexual interests.” Method We analyze several psycho-sexological studies that treat sadomasochistic practices as psychic case studies. BDSM practices are no longer considered deviant behaviors, but, on the contrary, “common” behaviors that have been adopted by a large number of individuals. These individuals use contractualization in a specific context. Result Rather than considering BDSM practice to be a perversion by assimilating it to homosexuality, current research in gender and psychiatry and in the psychology of subsexualities has moved beyond the analysis of “deviance,” preferring a scientific study of the effects of BDSM practice, particularly of their positive effects on mood, stress, or depression. Discussion The BDSM and Therapy Project is concerned with articulating the possible risks of BDSM play and with clarifying situations where BDSM play is neither safe nor helpful. Members of the BDSM community have expressed the following points: the development of barriers between community members; the risks of alienation and isolation through stigmatization; having one's limits violated during a scene; the potential risk of dehumanization and destruction. Conclusion BDSM therapy, in a therapeutic setting as well as within the community, is based on consent. BDSM can be a form of psychotherapy for the subject. BDSM therapy would consist in the modification of the meaning of physical suffering by transforming it into voluntary pain, through consensual constraint. A functional BDSM therapeutic practice requires at least three conditions: (1) the SM relationship involves a willing dominant and a willing submissive; (2) this erotic duo exists in a codified setting; (3) the dominant is a “therapizer” in her/his display of empathy for the submissive; (4) a two-way flow of reciprocal benefits in terms of post-session well-being.

This paper contrasts full passion with what I am calling empty passion. As examples of full passion, Melanie Klein's lovehate, Kristeva's maternal passion, Žižek's political passion, and the passion of friendship are discussed in relation to empty passion, a narcissistic desire to fill a lack or a hole at the center of being. This empty passion is related to the Lacanian demand to serve or to become the desire of the Other and to André Green's concept of the psychic dilemma of the Dead Mother. Clinical and literary examples of empty passion are provided as illustrations.

This chapter comprises two parts. First, a discussion on the relationship between fetishism and ideology that will look in more depth at the ideas raised earlier in the book. Second, given that fetishism is not a self-contained concept within Freud’s work but exists in dialogue with several other formulations, to develop a theory of fetishism relevant to this book it is necessary to examine other areas. Therefore, this chapter covers Freud’s formulations of perversion, castration, phallus, and narcissism.

The present chapter deals with a very problematic but highly significant enigma of human life concerning freedom and responsibility in the context of environmental disruption and pollution and consequent ill effects experienced in our concrete day to day living all over the globe due to misuse of freedom and lack of responsibility. The environmental pollution is not just physical in earth, water, air, fire and space. It is at the mental and intellectual levels also. It is all round at the individual level, at the family level, at the community level, at the social organizational level and at the cosmic level. Since all pollution and perversion are human-making, there is need to regulate human conduct. This is real deep ecology. Physical ecology is only external, and it is controlled by internal ecology which is foundational. At present, we only raise environmental concerns and do not care to cultivate environmental consciousness. Instead of trying to treat the outer symptoms, we have to go to the root causes. This can be viewed as a decisive impulse for his later differentiated classification of types of schizophrenia. The suspicion that Leonhard suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder cannot be supported. His reticence concerning social-psychiatric aspects is analysed in the context of his early professional contact with the ‘Erlangen system’ of open care and its Nazi perversion. Leonhard’s role in National Socialism is still uncertain. His unsuccessful attempts to retain the Erlangen Chair of Psychiatry and Mental Illness in 1951 can be viewed as his first difficulty in the tensions between West Germany and East Germany.

The definition of pudendum is external genitalia. The term pudendum is used to describe external genitalia regardless of sex. The labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, penis, scrotum, testes, and so on are all parts of the human pudenda. The female pudendum is also called the vulva. Also, nonhuman species have pudenda. Pudendum is a term that has been part of the formal anatomical nomenclature for a millennium. Recently, the meaning of pudendum has been perverted and misinterpreted as synonymous with only the vulva and to come from an etymological root term with the narrowly defined meaning "to be ashamed." The misunderstanding of pudendum is twofold. First, pudendum describes the external genitalia indiscriminate of sex; however, terms such as pudendum muliebre/pudendum femininum and pudendum virile/pudendum masculinum have been used throughout history to identify pudenda with respect to sex. Second, the meaning of the root term pudere has been taken out of context. The meaning of the root term is inclusive of respect, modesty, honesty, honor, virtue, awe, veneration, and so on and has a positive connotation rather than a negative connotation, akin to sacrum, for example. Indeed, pudendum shares its etymological root with the names of goddesses and saints (e.g., Pudicitia, Saint Pudens, Saint Pudentiana). This manuscript provides details regarding anatomical etymology and both the historical and modern use of anatomical terminology related to pudendum. Furthermore, this manuscript remedies the perversion of pudendum and, in doing so, improves the anatomical lexicon.

This chapter proposes to approach the Tunisian Revolution psychoanalytically. Rather than studying the revolution in a more conventional way, by examining only its socioeconomic and political ingredients, causes, and impacts, the chapter probes its underlying politics of desire — how subjects can follow the master's Law, despite misgivings about it (a politics of perversion), or choose instead to resist and transgress it, refusing to compromise on their desire for change (a politics of hysteria). Indeed, the “Jasmine Revolution” saw the overthrow of Ben Ali's despotic rule by broad-based social protest. But while the country subsequently witnessed the establishment of liberal democracy, the two main political forces (the liberal Nidaa Tounes and the Islamic Ennahda) have ended up pursuing many of the same socioeconomic policies of Ben Ali, which have in turn been met with popular opposition. The chapter then compares the Tunisian to the Egyptian revolution, reflecting on the broader psychoanalytic possibilities and perils of popular uprisings, including the risk that a politics of hysteria may transform into a politics of perversion.

A partir de uma revisão da literatura como método de pesquisa, este trabalho pretende apontar os caminhos tradicionalmente percorridos para tratar a problemática do consumo de drogas – tão lesivo e presente na atualidade – assim como os caminhos que podem ser explorados a partir da psicanálise. Analisaremos os termos comumente relacionados ao consumo de drogas, para que possamos distinguir as características que levam os psicanalistas a assumirem o termo toxicomania e não outro qualquer, enfatizando a relação sujeito-droga. Trataremos da sua relação com as estruturas clínicas – neurose, psicose e perversão – com o mal-estar destacado por Freud e com o conceito lacaniano de gozo, objetivando expor a leitura psicanalítica da toxicomania. Com base nos resultados da pesquisa, concluímos que a psicanálise pode contribuir de forma incisiva no tratamento dos toxicômanos, uma vez que este referencial enxerga para além do toxicômano, um sujeito, e se propõe a operar junto a ele.

This article aims to demonstrate how perversion, as a subject, activates investigation. As a starting point, it explores Freud’s idea surrounding fetishism as a paradigm of itself; a necessary interval between neurosis and psychosis. This analysis is followed by a presentation of various notions developed by Lacan in his teachings. Subsequently, the article analyzes Haneke’s 2001 film “The piano teacher”, here considered as a case of substitute perversion that adds to the few documented cases of this nature. The movie contributes elements that allow to think about and further develop the notion of substitute perversion in psychosis. In it, “the teacher” demonstrates the separation between love, desire, juissance and what Lacan calls “false hole” through borromean rings. Lastly, questions are posed regarding perversion; organized by answers, opposite the two aforementioned structures. Resumo: O artigo ocupa-se de mostrar como a perversão é uma temática que ativa a pesquisa. Explora, inicialmente, a ideia de Freud sobre o fetichismo como paradigma desse operador clínico, intervalo necessário entre a neurose e a psicose. Depois apresenta noções formuladas por Lacan em seus ensinamentos. Examina, posteriormente, o filme A professora de piano, de Haneke (2001), considerando-o material que contribui diante da escassez de casos sobre perversão. Encontra no filme elementos para pensar e indagar a suplência perversa na psicose. A professora ensina a propósito da amarração do nó borromeano entre amor, desejo, gozo e do estabelecimento do que Lacan chama: “falso furo”. O artigo, finalmente, formula questões sobre essa estrutura clínica que, diferentemente das outras duas, se organiza não em certezas, mas adiantando respostas.

This chapter provides a glimpse into the world of autism research. It begins by presenting a general description of autism in terms borrowed from its elaboration as an object of scientific research. This description is contrasted with the designation of autism as a mode of being progressed by many high-functioning autistic individuals and autism advocates. The perspective through which autism is designated in this book is then situated in the intersection between the realist scientific approach and normative approach. This perspective, rooted in the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, describes autism as a singular subjective structure that is not reducible to the major structures of subjectivity elaborated in psychoanalysis so far: neurosis, perversion, and psychosis. Finally, this chapter discloses that the singularity of autistic subjectivity is to be accounted for in this book through the explication of a singular mechanism of constitutive exclusion called autistic foreclosure.

This article methodically gathers concepts and findings from related disciplines to propose that there is a fundamental, disorder-specific psychological impairment, which defines Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as etiologically different from simple PTSD. This impairment is a flawed working model for restoration of trust when one partner fears betrayal. This working model is legacy of childhood relationships with manipulative caretakers who kept the child powerless to test the trustworthiness of their reasons to break promises and to fail the child's expectations. Manipulative caretakers invert the respective roles and responsibilities for restoration of trust, which constitutes perversion of intimacy. This article describes how that fundamental flaw becomes the cause of patients' disorder, by episodically rendering them powerless to ascertain a perception of grave betrayal as true or false in later relationships. Repeated failure with experiments for certainty about others' love explains the characteristic personality traits and beliefs of persons with Complex PTSD, i.e., cynicism about the world's benevolence, self-derogation and sense of a foreshortened future. This article closes with reference to a study that investigated the efficacy of a crisis intervention designed to remediate this fundamental impairment.

The status of apostasy seems unclear in Islamic jurisprudence of the classical age, it is an act considered traditionally to be a legal vacuum, calling for no corporal punishment (mubah). When a sentence was applied in this case, it would seem that it was due to partisan political reasons, rather than on the basis of real spiritual proper needs. Yet today some conservative ulemas apply this status of excommunication, patterned on the modern Catholic model, to practices considered to be “abnormal,” such as homosexuality. What about the Islamic jurisprudence development, as it is conceived and applied today? What is the position of the so-called majority Islamic authorities in regard to apostasy or the perversion of some Muslim minorities? Moreover, what is the position of these ulemas vis-à-vis the so-called alternative progressive movement, which reject the majority Islamic dogma, in France, Morocco, Egypt and elsewhere in the so-called Arab-Muslim world?

Objective Murder-suicide is a rare and especially tragic form of violence. Nascent literature has characterized murder-suicide perpetrated by adults, but no study has focused on adolescents who perpetrated murder-suicide. Method This study evaluated all cases of murder-suicide perpetrated by persons under age 21 who were included in the National Violent Death Reporting System, and categorized each incident using Joiner's perversion of virtue framework of murder-suicide. Results Forty-seven incidents of murder-suicide perpetrated by adolescents were identified, representing 56 victims. Most cases did not have sufficient information to be categorized within a particular perversion of virtue. Among the 20 cases who did have sufficient detail to be categorized, incidents were identified as perversions of self-control (n = 11), justice (n = 8), and mercy (n = 1). Most perpetrators were male, and the majority of victims were female. Additional victim, perpetrator, and incident characteristics are described. Conclusions Our findings extend previous work by employing a coding system based on a theoretically derived framework for categorizing "genuine" murder-suicide and related behavior among adolescents. This study also characterized the nature of this complex and tragic sequence of behavior among adolescents, who are at elevated risk of suicide, and who may benefit from prevention efforts that effectively address means safety, suicidality, and intimate partner violence.

Historically, the link between sexual deviance and criminality has been described and documented, asserted by psychiatry, and manifested in law. Laws that have regulated sexual behaviour have referred to terms such as ‘sexual deviation’, ‘sexual perversion’ or even archaic moral terms such as ‘unnatural acts and unspeakable crimes against nature’. A possible link between sexual perversion, psychopathy, and criminality, specifically manifesting in sexual homicide, has been the subject of remarkable research in forensic psychiatry. This contribution examines the phenomenon of paraphilia with specific reference to its definition, diagnostic classification and characteristics, as well as a few selections of incidences of paraphilia in South African criminal case law. A brief assessment is made of how South African criminal courts have dealt with paraphilia. In this regard, an analysis is made of the criminal liability of the paraphiliac. The South African response to sexual deviation as addressed in the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007 will also be addressed with reference to its efficacy in addressing paraphilia within South African criminal law. The interface between criminal law and medical ethics within the context of this theme will also be canvassed. In conclusion, recommendations for possible reform are canvassed.

This paper tackles the Lacanian topics of scansion and the variable-length session, drawing both on existing literature and on two short case studies. Scansion – the clinical procedure of punctuating, interrupting or cutting a patient’s analytical productions – is discussed in view of a key historical precedent within psychology, namely the notion of the Zeigarnik effect. It is, furthermore, briefly related to Freud’s work (his treatment of the Wolf Man, the technique of free association) before being clinically contextualised via attention to the Lacanian diagnostic structures of neurosis, psychosis and perversion. Fragments of two cases – one focused on an obsessive and another on a hysterical patient – are offered as a means of introducing a more clinically applied description of scansion. This mode of intervention – akin to an enigmatic interpretative gesture – aims to put the unconscious to work; to disrupt the defensive productions of the ego; and to, potentially, extend and support the transference...

On the basis that psychotherapists are experts at reflective practice, this article explores the notion of reflection as both an individual and a systemic issue, and argues that in our present age of austerity there is an increasing tension between the two. The article begins by describing pertinent aspects of today's UK National Health Service and some of the reflective practice projects in which the author has been involved with groups of health professionals in this context. The article focuses on the anxiety that drives the organisations within which we practice health and social care, and suggests that we might help contain this anxiety, not just by working with groups of anxious staff, but by helping society better understand and articulate the problem. Ambrose Bierce’s first published short story, “The Haunted Valley” (1871), draws on prevailing stereotypes of Chinese immigrants in the United States as figures of sexual and gender deviance. The story depicts a central but absent figure, Ah Wee, as both prostitute and sodomite, confounding distinctions between man/woman, heterosexual/homosexual, laborer/prostitute, and white/Chinese. However, in its attempts to counter anti-Chinese hostility, “The Haunted Valley” inverts the logic of representations of Chinese sexuality as contagious perversion threatening the nation. The story portrays the maintenance of the boundaries of racial difference, rather than racial difference itself, as perverting proper gender and sexual identities and bonds between white men. It critiques anti-Chinese hostility as a ruse of white labor to hide its own transgressions and as a symptom of, rather than solution for, the degradation of white masculinity. The critique of racism relies on a generic one, a critique of sentiment and of the feminizing effects of sentimental narratives, and affirms and reinforces a shared heteronormative masculinity as an alternative to shared political action.

RESUMEN Este artículo explora las causas del populismo punitivo en Colombia y el consecuente colapso carcelario. Igualmente se consideran datos estadísticos con altas tasas de reincidencia delictiva, lo que permite llegar a la conclusión sobre el rotundo fracaso de la prisión cerrada, institución que tiene como principal función la de lograr la resocialización de los infractores. Como consecuencia, se propone replantear la utilización de la cárcel cerrada, con aplicación minimalista, esto es, solo para los casos que revistan mayor gravedad y se revisan algunas alternativas para la gradual abolición de este tipo de cárcel. ABSTRACT This article explores the causes of punitive populism in Colombia along with its consequent prison collapse, which leads to propose the gradual abolition of closed prisons, as these institutions have failed to resocialize inmates. Taking into account collected data, it is found a need to rethink the use of closed prisons, by using them minimally, in cases that are more serious. As a methodology of analysis, the article addresses four major aspects, such as Punitive Populism and the Criminal Law of the Enemy, the perversion of the closed prison system, the collapse of the closed prison in Colombia and finally, alternatives for the gradual abolition of closed prisons.

In this chapter, we explore themes that emerge in psychoanalytic work with couples, particularly in those couples presenting with sexual problems, from the "ordinary" difficulties of anxiety about being intimate to the more pathological manifestations in perversion. We examine how unresolved conflict in the internal world, especially in relation to the internal couple, can lead to difficulties in the capacity for intimate relating. We suggest that intrusive projective identification and the use of "defensive sameness" and "defensive difference" serve as defenses against intimacy. These defenses function to obliterate the reality of the other, and it is in this sense we use the term perversion. Finally, we comment on the difficulties for the therapist who may feel drawn into a perverse arena when working with couples with sexual problems. We use the film Sex, Lies and Videotape (Soderbergh, 1988) to illustrate these themes. In this extraordinary film we can observe a set of characters demonstrating the range of these difficulties, with the advantage that we do not encounter any problems about confidentiality.

North Philadelphia is one of the hot-spot scenarios of drug dealers, users, and sellers. One out of three patients upon admission has, or has had, problems with substances such as alcohol, cocaine, or heroin. The patient must undergo both treatments because they are considered to have "dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders". This chapter discusses a psychoanalytic approach to addiction which is much different than this traditional mental health one. In discussing about the specificity of addiction, the French psychiatrist Henri Ey, a very close colleague of Lacan's, includes both drug addicts ("toxicomanos"; Fr. "toxicomanes") and sexual perverts under the classification of "psychopaths". Addiction and psychopathy also share a relation to the drive; Ey says that "the behavior of the toxicomano constitutes a perversion that completely satisfies his need". He associates it with certain behaviours that are "such perversions" since they both share "the regression to a partial pleasure".

This chapter discusses violence as an aspect of perversion. The perversion arises in the attempt to create this false reconciliation between contradictory ideas that can no longer be kept separate, and it is when the perverse solution proves inadequate to contain the patient's internal conflict that aggression and violence can erupt. Many people indulge in sexual fantasies that deviate from the accepted norm, and some may put such fantasies into occasional practice, but "sexual deviance" is defined as a persistent and preferred form of perverse sexual behaviour that reflects a global structure involving the individual's whole personality. Riesenberg-Malcolm thinks that perverse patients resist psychic change in order to avoid learning about what they believe to be their irreparably damaged internal objects. Perverse psychopathology can be understood as being a container for unbearable anxiety, and the perverse patient will usually attempt to convince both himself and the assessor that he is the innocent victim.

In this volume contemporary staff describe their thinking and clinical work. Theoretical underpinnings for the understanding of perversion and violence, questions of risk and ethics and the institutional difficulties which emerge in the care of these patients are presented alongside chapters on clinical work, with adults and adolescents, including chapters on paedophilia, the compulsive use of internet pornography and transsexuality. This volume is of relevance to all those working with people with a range of personality disorders and those working with individuals who present with these types of problems in the mental health services and in private practice. The Portman Clinic has been applying a psychoanalytic framework to the understanding and treatment of violent, perverse, criminal and delinquent patients since its foundations in the early 1930’s. All Portman Clinic patients have crossed the boundary from fantasy and impulse to action – action which defies legal and moral boundaries but which also breaches the body boundary of the victims. Ultimately, the violence underlying most of such violent, perverse and delinquent action, also attacks and disturbs the mind of both the victim, be that an individual or society, and that of the perpetrator.

The investigation into Frere Flamidien is a revealing insight into prevailing theories of the relationship between male sexual perversion and crime. Through the forensic specialist, Dr. Castiaux, the investigators sought to prove that Frere Flamidien was, in the terminology of the day, a pederast. To do so, they drew on established theories of the bodily marks of sexual perversion. The investigation then went further, drawing on the established links between the vow of chastity and other pathologies, notably spermatorrhea and satyriasis. Faced with Flamidien’s claim of innocence, the magistrate hoped that his body might reveal the truth of his crime.
