Health literacy (HL) and cancer care coordination (CCC) were examined for their relationship to quality of life (QOL) among breast cancer survivors. CCC was hypothesized to have a stronger relationship to QOL for women with lower HL. Women (N = 1138) who had completed treatment for Stage 0–III, ductal carcinoma breast cancer between January 2013 and May 2014 at one of eight large medical centers responded to a mailed questionnaire. Responses to questions about survivorship care planning and presence of professional care coordinator were combined to form an index of CCC. An index of HL was also derived. QOL was measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) scales. 74.3% (N = 845) of patients reported having a health professional coordinate their care during treatment and 78.8% (N = 897) reported receiving survivorship care planning. CCC was classified as none, partial, or high for 7.1%, 32.7%, and 60.2% of the patients, respectively. Dual malignancy was first reported by Billroth in 1889. Incidence of second malignancy in cancer patients is as high as 10%, but synchronous anaplastic thyroid cancer along with breast tumor is a rare entity. We present a case of a 61-year-old female with a synchronous anaplastic carcinoma thyroid with ductal carcinoma breast. The plausible association of breast cancers with thyroid carcinomas should thus be evaluated in larger cohort studies. More importantly, this report is to highlight the unusual synchronous occurrence of anaplastic thyroid cancer with ductal breast cancer and the therapeutic challenges involved in such cases.

Synchronous occurrance of multiple neoplastic processes is not very common, and the relationship between breast cancer with lymphoproliferative diseases is unusual as well. Furthermore, breast involvement by non-Hodgkins lymphoma is a rare event and primary breast non-Hodgkins lymphoma is even rarer. The authors take this opportunity to report a case of primary B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma breast occurring in association with invasive ductal carcinoma in a 47-year-old female for its rare synchronous association. Background: Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2/neu (HER2/neu) assessment is carried out in gastric adenocarcinomas (GAC) and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) breast to decide upon of trastuzumab targeted therapy. The study the only of its kind which has compared the influence of HER2/neu expression to markers of tumor aggression in these two malignancies in similar target population. Material and Methods: HER2/neu evaluation was conducted by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using the guidelines of Trastuzumab for Gastric Cancer trial for GAC and ASCO-CAP 2013 for IDC breast. The study correlated HER2/neu expression with markers of tumor aggression. Aims: The present retrospective study compares the disease influence of HER2/neu over expression on markers of disease aggression like age at presentation, grade of tumor and lymph node metastasis in GAC and IDC. Results: We have compared 82 cases of GAC with 113 cases of IDC. HER2/neu expression was seen in 23.2% and 36.3% of GACs and IDCs respectively. The mean age of HER2/neu positive GACs was found to be 3.47 years greater than their negative counterpart but the pattern was reversed in cases of IDC breast where the mean age of HER2/neu positive tumors was 6.09 years less than their negative counterpart. Though no correlation was found between grade of tumor and HER2neu status in GACs (P = 0.2930), however in IDC breast a significant correlation HER2neu positivity was found with higher grade (P = 0.0002). Similarly though we did not find any correlation of HER2neu status with nodal metastasis in GACs (P 0.0511) but in IDCs a significant correlation was found of nodal metastasis with HER2/neu positivity (P = 0.0001). Conclusion: We conclude that HER2/neu expression is more frequent in IDC breast and is significantly associated with markers of aggression in contrast to its influence on the same markers in GACs.

Filariasis is a major disease of the tropics. Frequently, lymphatics of the lower limbs, retroperitoneal tissues, spermatic cord, epididymis, and mammary glands are involved. Simultaneous filariasis along with another underlying disease is rare. We present a rare case of filariasis of the axillary lymph node in a modified radical mastectomy specimen, which also showed metastatic deposits of ductal carcinoma breast. The case is presented due to its rarity.

Aims and Background In spite of the fact that ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast is a frequently encountered clinical problem, there is no consensus about the optimal treatment of clinically occult (i.e., mammographic presentation only) DCIS. Interest in breast conservation therapy has recently increased. Few data are available in Italy on the conservative treatment with surgery and adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy. Methods A retrospective multi-institutional study was performed in 15 Radiation Oncology Departments in northern Italy involving 112 women with subclinical DCIS of the breast treated between 1982 and 1993. Age of the patients ranged between 32 and 72 years (median, 50 years). All of them underwent conservative surgery: quadrantectomy in 89, tumorectomy in 11, and wide excision in 12 cases. The most common histologic subtype was comedocarcinoma (37%). The median pathologic size was 10 mm (range 1 to 55 mm). Axillary dissection was performed in 83 cases: all the patients were node negative. All the patients received adjunctive radiation therapy with 60Co units (77%) or 6 MV linear accelerators (23%) for a median total dose to the entire breast of 50 Gy (mean, 49.48 Gy; range, 45-60 Gy). Seventy-six cases (68%) received a boost to the tumor bed at a dose of 8-20 Gy (median 10 Gy) for a minimum tumor dose of 58 Gy. Results At a median follow-up of 66 months, 8 local recurrences were observed, 4 intraductal and 4 invasive. All recurrent patients had a salvage mastectomy and are alive and free of disease at this writing. The 10-year actuarial overall, cause-specific, and recurrence-free survival was of 98.8%, 100%, and 91%, respectively. Conclusions The retrospective multicentric study, with a local control rate of more than 90% at 10 years with 100% cause-specific survival, showed that conservative surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy is a safe and efficacious treatment for patients with occult, non-palpable DCIS.
