Background: To explore whether combined with TCM based on classical proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) therapy can achieve better efficacy for patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Methods: There were 150 laryngopharyngeal reflux patients enrolled and divided into three groups randomly, with 50 cases in each group. Patients in group A were treated with the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) lansoprazole. Patients in group B were treated with lansoprazole combined with Banxia Houpu decoction, and patients in group C were treated with acupuncture treatments and a combination of Chinese and Western medicine. The reflux symptom index (RSI), reflux finding score (RFS), and quality of life (36-item short form health survey questionnaire) were assessed before and 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. Results: The RSI and RFS scores of the three groups were significantly reduced after treatment (P < 0.001). In group B and C, they were lower than in group A at 8 weeks (P < 0.01). The SF-36 score of 3 groups increased after treatment. At both 4 and 8 weeks (P < 0.001), and patients in groups B and C scored higher than patients in group A (P < 0.001). The total effective rate of group B and group C was higher than that of group A (P < 0.05). Conclusion: All three treatments have therapeutic effects on the disease, but the efficacy of a PPI alone is not as good as the combined treatments' efficacies. Moreover, PPI combined with Banxia Houpu decoction and/or acupuncture treatment substantially affects life improvement.

Background: Kuan Xiong aerosol (KXA) is a Chinese herbal compound used to regulate qi-flowing to relieve pain and improve angina. However, only a few pharmacological studies on this traditional Chinese medicine preparation have been reported to confirm these activities. Objective: This article aims to observe the effect of resisting acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) in vivo and dilating vessel in vitro of KXA. Materials: The AMI model involves intravenously injecting pituitary (2 U.kg-1) into the ear of rabbits. Electrocardiograph (ECG) T waves were then recorded after administration and the falling range was calculated. Following this, the level of serum Cardiac troponin T (cTn-T) and the histopathology of the cardiac muscle tissue was evaluated. In vitro, the effect of KXA on vasodilation of isolated aortic rings that had been pre-contracted with KCl (30 mM) was observed. Background Although rural communities are home to a higher proportion of older residents, they provide fewer healthcare services than do urban core communities. Chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is often associated with reduced daily activity and quality of life in older adults, particularly those in rural areas. Aims This study investigated the pain experiences and coping strategies in rural older adults with MSK pain in Taiwan. Methods A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from rural older adults with chronic MSK pain in mountainous areas of Taiwan. Results In total, 55 rural older adults were enrolled in this study. The most common pain sites were the low back and knees. The main cause of pain was osteoarthritis. Three quarters of the participants suffered from moderate to severe chronic MSK pain on average. The results revealed that behavioral strategies were used more often than cognitive strategies. Regarding behavioral strategies, the most common non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic pain coping strategies were to rest and to take Chinese medicine, respectively. The most common cognitive strategy for pain coping was to talk to others. Conclusions The findings suggested that pain management for chronic MSK pain in rural older adults was inadequate in mountainous areas of Taiwan. Most rural older adults used multiple coping strategies to deal with their pain, and behavioral strategies were favored over cognitive strategies.

Introduction: Palpitation is a common complaint among patients presenting to emergency departments or cardiologists. Palpitation caused by organic heart diseases, such as coronary atherosclerotic heart disease and hypertensive heart disease, may be a sign of a life-threatening condition. In such cases, treatment with western medicines or surgeries is warranted. However, for patients with palpitation caused by non-cardiac factors, western medicine treatment is often ineffective, and traditional Chinese medicine has comparatively superior advantage. With the change in people's lifestyle and habits in the past decades, the time spent sitting and that with a forward head posture is increasing, which has accelerated the process of spinal aging and increased the incidence rate of spinal diseases. Case presentation: A 54-year-old female presented with paroxysmal palpitations, chest depression, and neck pain that had lasted for more than 2 months. Western medicine diagnosis was palpitations due to spinal disorders, while the traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis was palpitation (heart and spleen deficiency). The patient was treated with traditional Chinese massage, 30 min sessions, 5 times a week, 3 weeks totally. Subsequently, the patient's neck pain and numbness disappeared and the palpitations, chest tightness, and dizziness ameliorated. The patient resumed regular appetite, experienced better sleep, and had further improvement of spirit, enabling her to lead a normal life. Conclusions: Traditional Chinese massage therapy can relieve muscle spasm, regulate cervical facet joint disorder and dislocation, release adhesion, relieve synovial incarceration, restore the dynamic and static balance of the cervical spine, improve blood circulation of the cervical spine, increase the nutritional supply of the cervical spine and surrounding soft tissue, and promote metabolism and tissue repair. All these advantages make it a good complementary and alternative therapy for palpitation caused by spine disorders.

Although Western medicine and ideas about atopic dermatitis (AD) have become popular in many Asian countries, local beliefs about the disease and its treatment often prevail. The multi- racial background of these countries as well as the influence of the diverse religions (such as Taoism and Ramadan) in these regions often lead to diverse belief systems about the causes of AD (such as the Chi concept, also known as the balance of yin and yang) and the types of treatment (e.g. herbal remedies, topical versus concoctions, and decoctions). In addition, many of the cultural practices are preserved among the Southeast Asian minorities residing in the United Kingdom and North America. Eastern treatments typically take a holistic approach to AD and emphasize the psychosomatic component of the disorder. This overview provides a summary of the difference between Conventional, Complementary, Alternative, and Integrative Medicine in terms of epidemiology, aetiology, therapy, and prognosis in children with AD. There are a number of similarities in genetic and environmental factors in epidemiology and aetiology; however, differences exist in terms of the concept of management. Complementary and alternative medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and integrative medicine usage are not only prevalent among the Asian population but are also becoming more popular and accepted in Western societies.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of most common malignancies worldwide and its incidence is still growing. In spite of recent advances in targeted therapies, their clinical efficacy has been limited, non-curative and unaffordable. A growing body of literature indicates that CRC is a multi-modal disease, where a variety of factors within the tumor microenvironment play a significant role in its pathogenesis. For instance, imbalance in gut microbial profiles and impaired intestinal barrier function contribute to the overall intestinal inflammation and initiation of CRC. Moreover, persistent chronic inflammation favors a tumor microenvironment for the growth of cancer. In addition, autophagy or ‘self-eating’ is a surveillance mechanism involved in the degradation of cellular constituents that are generated under stressful conditions. Cancer stem cells (CSCs), on the other hand, engage in the onset of CRC and are able to endow cancer cells with chemo-resistance. Furthermore, the aberrant epigenetic alterations promote CRC. These evidences highlight the need for multi-targeted approaches that are not only safe and inexpensive but offer a more effective alternative to current generation of targeted drugs. Curcumin, derived from the plant Curcuma longa, represents one such option that has a long history of its use for a variety of chronic disease including cancer, in Indian ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Scientific evidence over the past few decades have overwhelmingly shown that curcumin exhibits a multitude of anti-cancer activities orchestrated through key signaling pathways associated with cancer. In this article, we will present a current update and perspective on this natural medicine – incorporating the basic cellular mechanisms it effects and the current state of clinical evidence, challenges and promise for its use as a cancer preventative and potential adjunct together with modern therapies for CRC patients.

Background: Berberine (BBR), an alkaloidal compound found in many plants, is widely used for hundreds of years in the traditional system of Chinese medicine. Objective/Aim: The present review is aimed to summarize the potential of Berberine in the amelioration of various neurological disorders. Methods: The collection of data for the compilation of this review work was searched in PubMed Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Of late, researchers are more focused on its beneficial role in neurodegenerative diseases. Result: BBR has proven its protective role in numerous neurotoxicity models including, oxygen-glucose deprivation, mercury-induced, neurodegenerative model by ibotenic acid, and hypoxia caused by COCl2. BBR treatment averts the generation of reactive oxygen species in the oxygen-glucose deprivation model. Further, it subdues cytochrome c along with the divulge of apoptosis-inducing factors that indicate its beneficial action in the management of stroke. BBR diminished hydrogen peroxide-induced neuronal damage by enhancing the PI3k / Akt / Nrf-2 based pathway and showed a preventive impact on neurites of SH-SY5Y cells by averting the formation of ROS and inhibiting apoptosis. The impact of BBR on neurological disorder using a transgenic AD type mouse strain (TgCRND8) showed a reduction in the piling up of amyloid-β plaque. In mice, administration of BBR in the dose range of 5-10m/kg has been reported to raise the levels of serotonin (47%), dopamine (31%), and norepinephrine (29%) in CNS to allay depression. Conclusion: The present review is aimed to summarize the potential of Berberine in the amelioration of various neurological disorders.

Ritual is one of the most classic research topics in the field of Anthropology, and rituals have close connection with medial practice. However, the research on this topic from the experience of Traditional Chinese Medicine is limited. This paper presents the whole story that a patient suffering from infertility got cured got cured by a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and finally became a mother. With the detailed description of each medical practice, including pulse-taking, traditional Chinese herb therapy, and postpartum confinement, this paper analyzes the ritualized elements in the whole process, interprets how ritual play a role in the practice of TCM, and points out ritual’s essential significance in contributing to human’s well being and adjusting the relationships between individual and the world.

Treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG), a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder, remains challenging due to side effects associated with modern medications used to treat the disease. JianPi YiQi BuSui Method (JPYQBSM) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which has been shown to provide pivotal MG-alleviating therapeutic benefits. However, JPYQBSM active chemical components and molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets have not yet been comprehensively investigated, prompting this study. The pharmacodynamic basis and action mechanism of JPYQBSM in the treatment of myasthenia gravis were predicted by computer network pharmacological technology and molecular docking technology of chemical composition. JPYQBSM alleviated MG through multi-chemical component, multitarget and multi-pathway synergistic therapeutic effects. This study provides new insights into specific mechanisms underlying JPYQBSM therapeutic effects for alleviating MG.

Objective To observe the effect of the combined therapy of electroacupuncture (EA) and ginger-isolated moxibustion on endometrial receptivity in the patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Methods A total of 70 subjects of PCOS were randomized into two groups, 35 cases in each one. In the western medication group, letrozole and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) were administered. In the combined therapy group, on the base of the treatment as the western medication group, the artificial cycle therapy with EA and ginger-isolated moxibustion was provided. The treatment duration was 3 menstrual cycles in two groups. After treated for 3 menstrual cycles, the symptom score of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), endometrial thickness, the number of ovulation cycle, endometrial morphology, bilateral uterine artery pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI), the sum of peak systolic velocity/end diastolic velocity (S/D) and pregnancy were compared in the patients between two groups. Results (1) After treatment, the endometrial thickness was better (0.21 ± ± 0.13 vs 0.14 ± 0.08, P Conclusion The combined treatment of electroacupuncture and ginger-isolated moxibustion with western medication effectively improves endometrial receptivity, increases clinical pregnancy rate and reduces early abortion rate in the patients with PCOS.

Objective We employed a multidisciplinary approach incorporating theoretical ideas, clinical experience, psychology, physiology, traditional Chinese medicine (CM), modern practice of CM, and oncology to explore the effect of patients’ repression of negative emotions and traumatic events on breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis. Methods BC female patients, older than 18 years of age, with available pathology reports who were treated at Rabin Medical Center were recruited. All participants completed questionnaires regarding medical history, behavioral tendencies, negative emotions, trauma, symptoms, and pathology (from a CM perspective). Data on tumor characteristics were collected from the pathology reports. The associations were examined using hierarchical binary logistic regressions. Results A total of 155 BC patients were enrolled. The median age was 52 years, with a range of 26–79; 95% were mothers; 28% had estrogen receptor (ER)-negative BC, 52% had progesterone receptor (PR)-negative BC, 48% had human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative BC, and antigen Ki-67 ≥ 20% was reported for 52% of tumors. Statistically significant associations were found between the emotional markers (sense of motherhood failure, and lack of self-fulfillment), avoidance behavior, and physical symptoms that are related to emotional repression based on CM. Significant associations were also found between variables associated with physical symptoms of emotional repression, which involves the production and accumulation of non-substantial phlegm (i.e., “high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm”), avoidance behavior which unconsciously uses “high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm” in order to achieve emotional repression, and tumor parameters including tumor grade, PR status, and Ki-67. Patients with higher levels of “high-lipid Qi-like microscopic phlegm” were more likely to have tumors with worse prognosis (PR-negative, higher grade, and higher Ki-67). Conclusion We demonstrated a relationship between emotional parameters, behavioral tendencies, CM parameters, and oncologic parameters in BC. Additional research is warranted to explore these associations and their relevance to clinical practice.

Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a frequently occurring clinical disease, which could be treated by traditional Chinese medicine. However, the effects and mechanisms of xiao-zhi-fang (XZF) alone or in combination with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on NAFLD remains unclear. Methods This study established the NAFLD mouse model by feeding with a high-fat diet and by administering with XZF and/or FOS. Moreover, the fat content in the liver tissues was evaluated by oil red O and hematoxylin and eosin staining, and the liver function indices were examined using a biochemical analyzer. Changes in the intestinal flora were monitored using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results of the current study showed that the alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total triglyceride, total cholesterol levels, and the amount of lipid accumulation were markedly elevated in NAFLD mice. Results XZF alone or in combination with FOS significantly reduced lipid accumulation in the liver and blood lipid levels in NAFLD mice. Moreover, XZF alone or in combination with FOS notably altered the intestinal flora structure in NAFLD mice. Consequently, 17 operational taxonomic units were decreased and nine were increased in the XZF and/or FOS groups. Conclusions FOS may accelerate the intestinal microecological balance in NAFLD mice after treatment with XZF by promoting intestinal flora growth, thereby enhancing the therapeutic effect of XZF on NAFLD.

Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in both developed and developing countries. Di'ao Xinxuekang (DAXXK) is a pure Chinese medicine herbal preparation refined from dioscin extracted from the roots of Dioscorea panthaica Prain et Burk and Diosorea nipponica Makino. Objective: To evaluate the application of DAXXK in Cardiovascular disease. Methods: : We searched and summarized all the studies on DAXXK and Cardiovascular disease in pumend, Google, and CNKI. Results: Modern pharmacological studies have shown that DAXXK has pharmacological effects such as dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and cardiac load, improving hemodynamics, lowering blood lipids and anti-platelet aggregation, and is widely used for the therapy of various kinds of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease (CHD), angina pectoris (AP) and myocardial infarction. We provide an overview of the clinical efficacy, molecular mechanisms, safety and therapeutic potential of DAXXK in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, aiming to provide clues and evidence for clinical decision-making. Conclusion: DAXXK exerts cardiovascular protection by regulating a variety of cardiovascular disease-related signaling pathways.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of astragalus–saffron–rhubarb mixture (Bao’shen recipe, BSR) on diabetic nephropathy (DN) in db/db mice and preliminarily explore the possible underlying mechanism. Methods A total of 125 8-week-old male db/db mice with DN were randomly divided into five groups: model group, irbesartan group and high-, medium- and low doses of BSR group, while 25 male db/m mice were used as a blank control. At 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 weeks of feeding, the animals were sacrificed and blood as well as urine samples were collected for blood glucose, urea nitrogen, creatinine and urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) measurement via blood glucose meter or corresponding detection kits, respectively. The renal tissues of each mouse underwent hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson, periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining. Renal homogenate was used to detect IL-6, TNF-α, TNF-1R and TNF-2R by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, the data obtained was statistically analyzed via one-way analysis of variance. Results BSR could effectively reduce the body weight, blood glucose, UAER, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, relieve the proliferation of mesangial tissue, and lower the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, TNF-1R, and TNF-2R in renal tissue of db/db mice with DN. Of note, the high-dose BSR treatment group has advantages over irbesartan treatment group in improving above-mentioned aspects. Conclusion BSR could effectively delay the progress of DN, partly related to its anti-inflammation effect.

Dysphagia is a common complication after stroke, which does not only affect the quality of life of patients, but also increase the risk of death. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment has always played an important role in the clinical treatment of dysphagia after stroke, but its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Literatures on the use of TCM for the disease in the recent 5 years have been reviewed, and the problems existing in the development and treatment of the disease are discussed in this article, in an attempt to provide new ideas for the treatment of the disease. This paper presents a summary of traditional Chinese medicine treatment for the disease in the past five years, including traditional Chinese medicine compound and acupuncture.

With the aggravation of an aging population, the prevalence of chronic heart failure is increasing. As a famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in Shaanxi Province, Mingjun Zhao is amicable at using traditional Chinese medicine to treat chronic heart failure. He believes that the pathogenesis of the condition is mainly due to the lack of heart Yang, deficiency of heart Qi, as well as the combination of water and blood stasis. Therefore, in treating this condition, it is essential to warm and nourish heart Yang, replenish Qi to benefit water, and promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis. Based on the standardized treatment used in western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine should be reasonably and accurately combined with it as a drug pair into a prescription, thus highlighting the advantages of the combination of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of chronic heart failure to a great extent.

Objective. To study the efficacy of restricting dietary protein intake combined with Buyang Huanwu decoction in treating diabetic nephropathy (DN) and its effect on patients’ inflammatory factor levels. Methods. The medical data of 150 DN patients treated in Wuhan No.1 Hospital (June 2018—May 2021) were retrospectively analyzed. All patients received regular therapy, those who received the intervention of restricting dietary protein intake were included in the control group (n = 75), and on this basis, those treated with Buyang Huanwu decoction were included in the experimental group (n = 75), so as to scientifically evaluate their efficacy and inflammatory factor levels after treatment. Results. The patients’ general information was not statistically different between the two groups ( P > 0.05 ); after treatment, the experimental group gained remarkably higher marked effective rate and total effective rate of treatment than the control group ( P < 0.05 ); the inflammatory factor levels of all patients were obviously better than before ( P < 0.05 ), and the levels of TNF-α, IL-2, IL-8, IL-4, and IL-10 were obviously lower in the experimental group than in the control group ( P < 0.05 ); the levels of fasting blood glucose, 2 h postprandial blood glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin of all patients were remarkably lower than before ( P < 0.05 ), but with no significant between-group difference ( P > 0.05 ); the renal function indexes of all patients were better than before, and between the two groups, the levels of 24 h microalbuminuria, 24 h urine protein excretion, and serum creatinine were obviously lower and the glomerular filtration rate was significantly higher in the experimental group ( P all P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Jointly applying Buyang Huanwu decoction on the basis of restricting dietary protein intake can effectively promote the clinical efficacy of DN, which is conducive to adjusting the inflammatory factor levels, promoting the patients’ renal function, and alleviating the clinical symptoms.

Background. To investigate the clinical effects of Chinese medicine decoction combined with glucocorticoid in treating children with primary nephrotic syndrome. Methods. A total of 70 children with pediatric nephritis nephrotic syndrome treated at Weifang People’s Hospital from January 2019 to December 2019 were randomly allocated to the therapy group and the control group, each with 35 cases. The control group was treated with conventional Western medicine, and the therapy group received Western medicine and Chinese medicine. After 12 weeks of treatment, the therapeutic effect of the two groups was compared. Results. After receiving the treatment, the levels of urine protein (UPro), triglyceride, and cholesterol were significantly decreased in the two groups ( p < 0.05 ), and these levels in the therapy group were much lower than those of the control group ( p < 0.05 ). However, the level of albumin (ALB) was predominantly increased in the two groups after treatment ( p < 0.05 ), and this level in the therapy group was much higher than that of the control group ( p < 0.05 ). Moreover, the immune indicators, coagulation function, and recurrence rate were noticeably improved after treatment ( p < 0.05 ), and the therapy group was better than the control group ( p < 0.05 ). Furthermore, the comparison of renal function indexes, liver function indexes, and blood routine between the two groups showed no statistical significance in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups ( p > 0.05 ). Conclusions. For the treatment of refractory nephrotic syndrome in children, based on conventional shock therapy, the addition of traditional Chinese medicine (Liuwei Dihuang pill decoction) remedy can significantly improve the disease symptoms in children and improve the efficacy, and the incidence of adverse reactions is low.

Background. Herba Sarcandrae is used in the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine to deal with gastric cancer. However, there are few studies on its precise mechanism. Method. In this study, a network pharmacological approach was utilized to construct a molecular/target/pathway molecular regulatory network for the anti-gastric-cancer effect of Herba Sarcandrae. The active components of Herba Sarcandrae and their potential mechanisms were explored. Chemical components of the Herba Sarcandrae were identified through a database, and they were evaluated and screened based on oral bioavailability and drug similarity. Results. Genes related to gastric cancer were found in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and gene targets related to anti-gastric-cancer were chosen by comparison. Using annotation, visualization, and a comprehensive discovery database, the function and related pathways of target genes were analyzed and screened. Cytoscape software was utilized to construct a component/target/pathway network for the antitumor effect of Herba Sarcandrae. Finally, 6 drug ingredients and 29 target genes related to gastric cancer were detected. IL-17 signaling pathway, NF-kappa B signaling pathway, and other signaling pathways were significantly enriched. Many signaling pathways that directly act on tumors and indirect pathways inhibit the development of gastric cancer. Conclusion. This study provides a scientific basis for further elucidating the mechanism of the anti-gastric-cancer effect of Herba Sarcandrae.

Gap junctions are the main form of interaction between cardiomyocytes, through which the electrochemical activities between cardiomyocytes can be synchronized to maintain the normal function of the heart. Connexins are the basis of gap junctions. Changes in the expression, structural changes (e.g., phosphorylation and dephosphorylation), and distribution of connexins can affect the normal electrophysiological activities of the heart. Myocardial infarction (MI) and concurrent arrhythmia, shock, or heart failure can endanger life. The structural and functional damage of connexin (Cx) 43 in cardiomyocytes is a central part of the pathological progression of MI and is one of the main pathological mechanisms of arrhythmia after MI. Therefore, increasing Cx43 expression has become one of the main measures to prevent MI. Also, intervention in Cx43 expression can improve the structural and electrical remodeling of the myocardium to improve MI prognosis. Here, research progress of Cx43 in MI and its prevention and treatment using Traditional Chinese Medicine formulations is reviewed.

During the last decades, Chinese medicine has been widely used for curing various diseases in the healthcare domain. Based on the databases of medicine wisdom and modern application of prescriptions, we have explored the medication pattern of ancient and modern prescriptions for the treatment of peptic ulcer in various patients. In this paper, we have proposed a neural network model which is based on the time series decomposition and is able to mine and predict the medication pattern of peptic ulcer treatment in Chinese medicine. For this purpose, cumulative distance level method, Mann–Kendall trend analysis, Hurst exponent, and characteristic point methods are used for the trend analysis. Likewise in the proposed model, the wavelet analysis method is used for the periodicity analysis and Mann–Kendall mutation test method along with Pettitt methods is used for mutability analysis. In addition, autocorrelation and unit root methods are utilized to test the random terms. The Chinese herbal formulas (where the main diseases are peptic ulcer, peptic ulcer, cerebral leakage, and cerebral abscess) are collected from the databases of medicine wisdom and modern application of prescriptions. Furthermore, methods of frequency analysis, association rule analysis, and factor analysis are used to evaluate the grouping pattern of prescriptions for peptic ulcer treatment. The error in the proposed scheme between the predicted and the measured values of 87 prescriptions, which involve five Chinese medicines for peptic ulcer and 160 Chinese medicines, obtained from the neural network was 16.79%.

Objective. To observe the clinical effect of Xiaozheng Decoction combined with bladder perfusion with hydroxycamptothecin in the treatment of bladder cancer. Methods. A total of 92 bladder cancer patients admitted to our hospital from January to December 2018 were selected and divided into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table method, with 46 cases in each group. The observation group was given Xiaozheng Decoction combined with bladder perfusion with hydroxycamptothecin, and the control group was given hydroxycamptothecin. The levels of serum-related factors (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), E-cadherin, cell adhesion molecules (CAM), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)), white blood cell (WBC) level, immune function indexes, short-term total response rate, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results. After 2 years of postoperative treatment, the levels of ICAM-1, E-cadherin, CAM-1, FGF, and VEGF (a, b, c) in both groups were improved compared with those before treatment and the observation group was better than the control group p < 0.01 . The number of WBCs was significantly higher than in the control group after Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment. The observation group was better than the control group in increasing CD3+ and CD4+ levels and decreasing CD8+ level p < 0.05 , indicating that this prescription could improve the immune function of patients. The recurrence rate in the observation group was 6.52% after 2 years of treatment, lower than 17.39% in the control group. Color ultrasound parameters showed that there were no statistically significant differences in arrive time (AT) and time to peak (TTP) between patients with and without recurrence and peak intensity (PI) and washout time (WT) were higher in patients with recurrence than in patients without recurrence p < 0.01 . The incidence of adverse reactions was significantly lower than that of the control group p < 0.01 . Conclusion. The clinical effect of Xiaozheng Decoction combined with hydroxycamptothecin on the treatment of bladder cancer was clear and superior to that of hydroxycamptothecin, which could effectively improve the serological indicators of patients with a low incidence of adverse reactions and prolong the survival cycle of patients. Therefore, it is worthy of promotion and application.

Background. Nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the main type of lung cancer, whose morbidity and mortality rank first among malignant tumors. More than 70% of NSCLC patients are diagnosed at locally advanced or advanced stage, missing the best operation period. Chemotherapy and targeted therapy are important means for the treatment of advanced NSCLC, but various side effects seriously affect the curative effect and the life quality of NSCLC patients. Our previous clinical practice has shown that Mufangji Decoction, a classic traditional Chinese medicine, has a significant curative effect in the treatment of NSCLC, but the specific mechanism is not clear. This study intends to explore the potential mechanism of Mufangji Decoction and its active ingredient patchouli alcohol against NSCLC and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of NSCLC by traditional Chinese medicine. Methods. The in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the antitumor effects and investigate the underlying mechanism of Mufangji Decoction and its active ingredient patchouli alcohol. Network pharmacology was applied to analyze the effective ingredients and potential targets or signaling pathways of Mufangji Decoction. Results. Our current study shows that Mufangji Decoction can effectively inhibit the growth of subcutaneous transplantation of NSCLC. The following network pharmacological analysis and in vivo experiment suggest that patchouli alcohol is one of the main active ingredients of Mufangji Decoction and exerts antitumor effects. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the antitumor effect of patchouli alcohol is related to the induction of Akt/mTOR signaling pathway-mediated autophagy in NSCLC cells. Conclusion. Mufangji Decoction and its active ingredient patchouli alcohol might exert their antitumor effects in NSCLC partly through regulating Akt/mTOR-mediated autophagy, providing the evidence that traditional Chinese medicine might be a key approach for NSCLC treatment via targeting the Akt/mTOR signal axis.

Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is associated with lower esophageal sphincter (LES) incompetence. In some patients, GERD is refractory to acid reduction therapy which is the main treatment for GERD. So far, medications that can increase LES tone are few. Arecae pericarpium (A. pericarpium) is a medication in Traditional Chinese Medicine known to promote intestinal motility. Methods We investigated the effect of A. pericarpium extracts on porcine LES motility. In addition, we used tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine to study the underlying mechanism of A. pericarpium extracts-induced contractions of LES. Results The results of this study showed that A. pericarpium extracts and their main active ingredient, arecoline, can induce the contractions of porcine LES sling and clasp muscles in a dose-response manner. TTX did not have an inhibitory effect on the contractions induced by A. pericarpium extracts and arecoline in LES. However, atropine significantly inhibited A. pericarpium extracts- and arecoline-induced contractions of LES. Conclusion A. pericarpium extracts can induce the contractions of porcine LES in a dose dependent manner, possibly through muscarinic receptors, and hence, may be worth developing as an alternative therapy for GERD.

The patients were randomly divided into a treatment group and control group, and both groups were given standard pharmaceuticals after PCI and the Wenyang Huoxue recipe. The treatment group was additionally treated with the Eight Trigrams Boxing Method. The control group was provided with aerobic rehabilitation exercise. The maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), metabolic equivalent (MET), the results of a 6-min walking test, the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) score, SF-36 score, and other indicators were evaluated before and after treatment. The therapeutic effect was evaluated by comparison between the groups and within the groups.Results: The VO2max, MET, 6-min walking distance, SAQ score, and SF-36 score in both groups improved after treatment compared with before treatment. There was no difference between the two groups before treatment. However, after treatment, the VO2max, MET, 6 min walking distance, SAQ score, and SF-36 score in the treatment group were higher compared with the control group.Conclusion: A traditional Chinese medicine cardiac rehabilitation program of Eight Trigrams Boxing combined with a Wenyang Huoxue recipe can improve the cardiopulmonary function and quality of life of patients. BACKGROUND Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is caused by a deficit in the ABCD1 gene, which leads to demyelination of neurons and dysfunction of the adrenal cortices and testicles. Of the three known phenotypes, 30%-50% of male ALD patients present with the adrenomyeloneuropathy phenotype, characterized by gait disturbance as the initial symptom. CASE SUMMARY A 46-year-old man with a prior diagnosis of ALD was admitted to a Korean medicine hospital for the treatment of gait disturbance. His ability to walk was severely impaired at admission, significantly affecting the patient’s quality of life. He was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture, and herbal medicine for 23 d. The 25-Foot Walk test (25FW), timed up and go (TUG), comfortable gait speed (CGS), numeric rating scale (NRS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Tinetti test, manual muscle test (MMT), and 3-level version of EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D-3L) were used to evaluate the patient. The outcomes of the 25FW, TUG, and CGS improved during hospitalization. From the time of admission to discharge we observed: A decrease in NRS scores in the lower extremities and the lower back; an increase of 3 points in the BBS; a 1-point increase in the balancing part of the Tinetti Test; MMT and EQ-5D-3L performances remained unchanged. CONCLUSION Traditional Chinese medicine treatments could be a therapeutic option to alleviate issues related to gait disturbance in ALD.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a widespread metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Human microbiota, which is regarded as a “hidden organ”, plays an important role in the initiation and development of T2DM. In addition, anti-hyperglycemic agents and traditional Chinese medicine may affect the composition of gut microbiota and consequently improve glucose metabolism. However, the relationship between gut microbiota, T2DM and anti-hyperglycemic agents or traditional Chinese medicine is poorly understood. In this review, we summarized pre-clinical and clinical studies to elucidate the possible underlying mechanism. Some anti-hyperglycemic agents and traditional Chinese medicine may partly exert hypoglycemic effects by altering the gut microbiota composition in ways that reduce metabolic endotoxemia, maintain the integrity of intestinal mucosal barrier, promote the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), decrease trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and regulate bile acid metabolism. In conclusion, gut microbiota may provide some new therapeutic targets for treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus.

Background: Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for women's health, including those with early breast cancer. Contemporary literature varies in descriptions of the CM syndromes that are critical for determining CM treatment options for breast cancer patients. However, the corresponding syndromes have not been standardized to align with the conventional medicine treatment stages. This review aimed to address this knowledge gap to enhance the quality and consistency of CM interventions for early breast cancer patients. Methods: In total, eight Chinese and English language databases were searched, and textbooks and clinical care documents were gathered. Sources were classified according to five treatment stages: preoperative, postoperative, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and endocrine therapy. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the syndromes, and hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to investigate clusters of signs and symptoms. Results: The CM syndrome of dual deficiency of qi and Blood was one of the most common syndromes across all treatment stages, whereas lack of strength and lassitude were the most common clinical presentations throughout all stages, except the preoperative stage. Cluster analyses identify three or four syndromes in each treatment stage. Cluster results for the preoperative stage were: Blood stasis, Liver depression and qi stagnation, and Kidney yin deficiency. Dual deficiency of qi and Blood existed at different stages except for the preoperative stage. In the postoperative stage and chemotherapy stages, some symptoms were categorized into clusters that related to the Spleen and Stomach. Syndromes such as yin deficiency with fire toxin and yin deficiency with fluid depletion were unique to the radiation therapy stage. Clusters for endocrine therapy stage included the dual deficiency of Spleen and Kidney, Liver depression and qi stagnation, and Kidney yin deficiency. Conclusions: Systematic review of the contemporary literature for early breast cancer revealed that the most frequently seen CM syndromes and cluster results have some similarities but some important distinctions. Clinical data are needed to confirm whether the syndromes described in contemporary literature reflect those seen in women with early breast cancer.

Background Stroke has always been a major threat worldwide but is most severe in China, with 2.5 million new stroke cases each year and 7.5 million stroke survivors, placing a heavy burden on the social and national health care systems. Zhishi Rhubarb Soup (ZRS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been used clinically for many years in China. To explore the potential mechanism of ZRS in the treatment of stroke, liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was performed. Methods In this study, a quantitative proteomic method with LC–MS was used to analyse the proteomic differences between MACO samples treated with ZRS and those without ZRS treatment. Results Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis led to the identification of 35,006 peptides, with 5160.0 proteins identified and 4094.0 quantified. Significantly differentially expressed proteins were identified through data analysis, and the difference was found to be more than 1.2 times (P Conclusion In this study, LC–MS/MS was performed to assess the effects of ZRS on differentially expressed proteins in rats with cerebral infarction. These promising results could help to improve the understanding of the effects of drugs on stroke.

Injection of total saponins from Panax notoginseng (ISPN) is a modern preparation derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is widely applied in the treatment of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, ophthalmology, and endocrine system diseases. With the increase in the clinical application of ISPN, its adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and related safety issues have attracted much attention. In the present study, a data-independent acquisition (DIA) strategy was proposed to comprehensively characterize the saponins contained in ISPN based on the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-Orbitrap MS (UHPLC/Q-Orbitrap MS) platform. As many as 276 saponins were detected, and 250 compounds were identified or tentatively identified based on the retention times and MS/MS data. Furthermore, a metabolomic strategy was utilized to discover the discriminative saponins between normal and ADR batches. The results showed that six saponins, including ginsenoside Rh4, ginsenoside Rk3, ginsenoside Rg5, ginsenoside Rk1, ginsenoside Rg6, and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rh2, were significantly different between the two groups. According to cytotoxicity analysis and degranulation detection of RBL-2H3 cells, ginsenoside Rg5, ginsenoside Rk1, and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rh2 were considered the potential compounds responsible for clinical ADRs, ultimately. In addition, the quantitative analysis showed that the content of these three compounds in ISPN samples with ADRs was generally higher than that in samples without ADRs. This study demonstrated that it is advisable to screen out potential markers related to ADRs for developing the quality standard of ISPN by the integration of untargeted metabolomic analysis and cell biology study, and thus reduce its ADRs in the clinic.

Introduction: Overweight and obesity not only affect an individual’s health physically but also psychologically. So, it is imperative for a clinician to take care both aspects of the individuals. Methods: This study is to report the effects of acupuncture and meditation therapy on the slimming indices of the overweight and obese women visiting our aesthetic clinic. They were voluntarily segregated into two groups, ie. one group consisted of women who selected acupuncture therapy (AT) only, the other group consisted of women who selected acupuncture and meditation therapy (AMT). Both groups’ body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were measured at the first visit and after eight and sixteen sessions of therapy, respectively. The differences between pre-therapy and post-therapy indices and between AT and AMT groups were analysed using two tailed t-test at 95% confidence interval (alpha at 0.05). Results: Subjects were seventeen women with overweight and obesity visiting aesthetic clinic for slimming treatment. Ten women chose AT and seven women chose AMT. Objective. The purpose was to explore the clinical effect of Danqi Buxin decoction on chronic heart failure (CHF) with yang deficiency and its effect on cardiac function and life quality of patients. Methods. 106 CHF patients with yang deficiency treated in Jinan Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from February 2019 to February 2020 were selected as the research objects and divided into the treatment group and reference group according to the odd and even admission numbers, with 53 cases in each group. The reference group was treated with routine antiheart failure drugs, while the treatment group was additionally treated with Danqi Buxin decoction to compare the clinical effect and cardiac function changes between the two groups. Results. The clinical effective rate in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the reference group P < 0.05 . The TCM symptom scores at T1, T2, and T3 in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the reference group P < 0.05 . After treatment, the LVEDV levels in both groups were significantly higher than those before treatment, while the BNP levels were significantly lower than those before treatment P < 0.001 . The LVEDV level in the treatment group after treatment was higher than that in the reference group, while the BNP level in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the reference group P < 0.001 . The life quality scores in the treatment group after treatment were significantly higher than those in the reference group P < 0.05 . Conclusion. Danqi Buxin decoction on the basis of conventional drugs can significantly improve the cardiac function and life quality of CHF patients with yang deficiency type. Its further research is helpful to establish a good treatment plan for CHF patients.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a severe cerebral disease with high mortality and morbidity, which leads to great challenges for the suffering children and their families. Hence, the need for the efficacious and safe treatments is urgent. As a physical therapy arising from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Tuina has shown multiple effects on various diseases, including cerebral palsy. Nevertheless, the detailed mechanisms of Tuina on CP remain unknown, which impedes its further clinical application. Herein, we explored the effects of Tuina on CP and its potential mechanisms. Thirty Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats were randomly divided into sham, model, and Tuina groups (model + Tuina). CP rat model was established by hypoxia-ischemia via permanent occlusion of left common carotid artery and hypoxia for 2.5 hours caused by anaerobic environment, which was subsequently followed by onset of Tuina treatment from postnatal day 7 (P7) to P49. After completion of Tuina treatment, the behavioral tests showed that Tuina treatment not only improved the retarded body weight and impaired motor balance function, but also ameliorated weakened learning and memory function of CP rats. Moreover, immunohistochemistry and western blot also revealed a reduced expression of NLRP3 inflammasome and corresponding pyroptosis-related molecules induced by NLRP3 in CP rats after Tuina treatment. Therefore, our study indicated that Tuina treatment may improve impaired neurocognitive function of CP rats, which was possibly realised via inhibiting NLRP3-induced pyroptosis.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of Jinlida granules on glycemic variability with or without metformin treatment in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. This study was a 16-week, double-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial. The enrolled patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes were randomly divided into four groups: control, Jinlida, metformin, and combination treatment groups. A retrospective continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system was used for subcutaneous interstitial glucose monitoring for 3 days consecutively. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), traditional Chinese medicine symptom score, and CGM parameters, including glucose coefficient of variation, standard deviation of blood glucose values, and time in range of glucose 3.9–10.0 mmol/L, were assessed pre-test and post-test. A total of 138 participants completed the entire procedure. Compared with the pre-test, fasting plasma glucose, 2 hour postprandial plasma glucose, HbA1c, and traditional Chinese medicine symptom score all decreased in the four groups at the end of the test, and the combination treatment group showed the most significant decrease. In terms of CGM parameters, time in range of the Jinlida and metformin groups improved after intervention compared with the baseline (Jinlida group: 78.68 ± 26.15 versus 55.47 ± 33.29; metformin group: 87.29 ± 12.21 vs. 75.44 ± 25.42; P < 0.01). Additionally, only the Jinlida group showed decreased glucose standard deviation after intervention (1.57 ± 0.61 vs. 1.96 ± 0.95; P < 0.01). Jinlida granules can improve glycemic control and glycemic variability in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Clinical trial registration number: ChiCTR-IOR-16009296.

BACKGROUND Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant necrotizing soft tissue disease with a high fatality rate. It always starts with impact on the deep fascia rapidly and might result in secondary necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and muscle. Thus, timely and multiple surgical operations are needed for the treatment. Meanwhile, the damage of skin and soft tissue caused by multiple surgical operations may require dermatoplasty and other treatments as a consequence. CASE SUMMARY Here, we report a case of 50-year-old male patient who was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis caused by cryptoglandular infection in the perianal and perineal region. The symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis, also known as the cardinal features, include hyperpyrexia, excruciatingly painful lesions, demonstration gas in the tissue, an obnoxious foul odor and uroschesis. The results of postoperative pathology met the diagnosis. Based on the premise of complete debridement, multiple incisions combined with thread-dragging therapy (a traditional Chinese medicine therapy) and intensive supportive therapies including comprising antibiotics, nutrition and fluids were given. The outcome of the treatment was satisfactory. The patient recovered quickly and achieved ideal anal function and morphology. CONCLUSION Timely and effective debridement and multiple incisions combined with thread-dragging therapy are an integrated treatment for necrotizing fasciitis.

Acne is a common but chronic skin disease that influence large population especially juvenile. Acne can continue, begin, or grow into severe form in adult age, affecting face, back, and chest. It may be a serious issue if not cared or treated timely. Even if acne got treated it leaves a persistent scar, which is difficult to alleviate. These acne lesions are long-lasting and result in significant impact on mental and physical health of an individual. There are four mechanisms that are involved in acne lesion formation. However, the accurate series of events of the interaction among the factors in acne pathogenesis is still unsettled. Pubescent acne is due to increase hormone levels, when in fact adult acne is due to fluctuation in hormone levels. There are various approaches for the treatment of acne, including oral medications, creams or gels, acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine stated acne as a infection that is associated with the pathogenic influence of damp heat and heat on specific meridians. As an ancient and integral part of Chinese medicine acupuncture therapy is employed in the treatment of many diseases including acne. It functions by ameliorating the deep-rooted mechanisms playing crucial role in acne development. In this review, we have explained the acne causes, pathogenesis, and its available treatment options. Additionally, we also discussed the acupuncture therapy methods, devices, different techniques. and its mechanism of action in treating acne. Furthermore, clinical trials studies motivated us to highlight the scope of acupuncture in the growing system of medicine.

Background Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is distinguished by Syndrome differentiation, which prescribes various formulae for different Syndromes of same disease. This study aims to investigate the underlying mechanism. Methods Using a strategy which integrated proteomics, metabolomics study for clinic samples and network pharmacology for six classic TCM formulae, we systemically explored the biological basis of TCM Syndrome differentiation for two typical Syndromes of CHD: Cold Congealing and Qi Stagnation (CCQS), and Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis (QSBS). Results Our study revealed that CHD patients with CCQS Syndrome were characterized with alteration in pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, while more extensively altered pathways including D-glutamine and D-glutamate metabolism; alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, were present in QSBS patients. Furthermore, our results suggested that the down-expressed PON1 and ADIPOQ might be potential biomarkers for CCQS Syndrome, while the down-expressed APOE and APOA1 for QSBS Syndrome in CHD patients. In addition, network pharmacology and integrated analysis indicated possible comorbidity differences between the two Syndromes, that is, CCQS or QSBS Syndrome was strongly linked to diabetes or ischemic stroke, respectively, which is consistent with the complication disparity between the enrolled patients with two different Syndromes. These results confirmed our assumption that the molecules and biological processes regulated by the Syndrome-specific formulae could be associated with dysfunctional objects caused by the Syndrome of the disease. Conclusion This study provided evidence-based strategy for exploring the biological basis of Syndrome differentiation in TCM, which sheds light on the translation of TCM theory in the practice of precision medicine. Especially, we added quality markers of each herb, whose pharmacological relevance had been validated. To enhance the reliability of targets, for each Syndrome, we only studied common targets of 3 different TCM formulae prescribed for this Syndrome. Objective To observe the clinical therapeutic effect of laser acupuncture on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) of qi and yin deficiency type. Methods Laser acupuncture was used to treat 32 patients of T2DM. Acupoint selection: Feishū (肺俞BL13), Pishū (脾俞BL20), Shenshū (肾俞BL23), Wǎnxiashū (胃脘下俞EX-B3), Sānyīnjiāo (三阴交SP6) and Zusānlĭ 足三里(ST36). It took 20 min in each treatment, five treatments a week. There were 2 days of interval in 2 weeks of treatment. Before and after treatment, the changes in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial 2 h glucose (2hPG), fasting insulin (FINS), glycosylated albumin (GA), insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) and the symptom score of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) were observed in the patients. The therapeutic effect was evaluated. Results Of 32 cases, 8 cases were remarkably effective, 18 cases effective and 6 cases failed. The total effective rate was 81.3%. At the end of treatment course, the level of every indicator after treatment was significantly lower than that before treatment (all P Conclusion Laser acupuncture achieves the significant therapeutic effect on T2DM of qi and yin deficiency and this therapy deserves to be promoted in clinical application.

Background Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine was performed on 24 patients with post-schizophrenia comorbid depressive disorder and insomnia admitted to the Psychiatry Department, Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from 2016 to 2020, and provided satisfactory results. Considering post-schizophrenia comorbid depressive disorder and insomnia is not a common clinical disorder in hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, the treatment and follow-up cycle is long, and the dropout rate is high, a retrospective case series based on Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) reporting checklist were conducted instead of a randomized controlled trial. Objective To retrospectively summary the short-, mid- and long-term effects of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine for post-schizophrenia comorbid depressive disorder and insomnia, and analyze the principles of the prescriptions. Methods A retrospective analysis based on case series JBI reporting checklist were performed to investigate effects of 24 patients with post-schizophrenia comorbid depressive disorder and insomnia undergoing 12-week combined acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment (patients did not receive full dosage treatments, or received western medicine or other physical and psychological therapies during the treatment period were excluded). The psychotic symptoms, depression, insomnia, and self-care ability for daily living were measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Activity of Daily Living Questionnaire (ADL-Q), respectively. Follow-ups were conducted at 8 and 16 weeks after treatment. Meanwhile, Acupuncture Beliefs Scale (ABS) was assessed at pre- and post- treatment as well as 16-week follow-up to investigate patients' beliefs and expectations for acupuncture treatment. Results (1) compared with pre-treatment, the PANSS global scores did not decrease significantly at post-treatment and follow-up periods (P> 0.05). (2) compared with pre-treatment, the global scores of CDSS and PSQI decreased significantly at post-treatment and follow-up periods (both P Conclusions Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine can significantly improve the insomnia and depressed mood following schizophrenia, with satisfactory short-, medium- and long-term effects; effective treatment experience can increase patients' beliefs and expectations for acupuncture therapy.

Purpose White adipose tissue (WAT) has positive effects on peripheral metabolism parameters and liver energy metabolism. This study aimed to explain the pharmacological mechanism of Qushi Huayu (QSHY) granules in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) mice based on branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism and WAT browning. Patients and Methods Thirty C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a (Ctrl) control group, fed with a control diet, a NAFLD model group, fed with a high-fat and high-sugar (HFHS) diet, and a QSHY granules treatment (HFHS+QSHY) group, administered with QSHY granules. After 14 weeks of feeding, HFHS+QSHY group mice were administered QSHY granules through oral gavage for 6 weeks. The metabolic parameters were assessed, the circular and fecal BCAA content was observed, and liver and epididymal WAT (eWAT) were collected for pathological, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blotting analyses. Results Compared with the HFHS group, mice in the HFHS+QSHY group demonstrated restored liver histological changes, ameliorated hepatocyte steatosis, and alleviated inflammatory cell infiltration. Consistent with the pathological changes, QSHY granules significantly reduced the elevated levels of liver triglycerides, and serum alanine aminotransferase, and it relieved hypercholesterolemia and insulin resistance in mice with HFHS-induced NAFLD. Furthermore, it corrected BCAA metabolic disorders in serum and feces and promoted the expression of BCAA catabolic genes in the eWAT of HFHS mice. QSHY granules also increased the expression of phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) protein, up-regulating the protein expression of the AMPK/SIRT1/UCP-1 pathway in the eWAT. Conclusion QSHY granules improved hepatic steatosis and corrected the BCAA disorder in NAFLD mice, and the related mechanisms regulated the AMPK/SIRT1/UCP-1 pathway and promoted WAT browning.

Introduction Hepatitis B-related compensated liver cirrhosis is related to a higher risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, and antiviral therapy is the preferred method. As the pathological mechanisms of liver fibrosis are complex, drugs developed for a single target are difficult to be effective in clinical practice, so there are no chemical drugs or biological drugs with clear efficacy available for clinical application at present. Traditional Chinese medicine is a kind of medical science that has been gradually formed during thousands of years and continuously enriched by the people of all ethnic groups in China. Traditional Chinese medicine shows curative effects in the treatment of liver diseases, especially in the field of liver fibrosis prevention and treatment. This study aims to test the integrative medicine (Chinese medicine plus antiviral therapy) effective on lowing hepatocellular carcinoma risk among patients with hepatitis-related compensated liver cirrhosis. Methods and analysis This is a multi-center randomized controlled trial, and a total of 5 hospitals and 802 patients will be involved in. All the subjects are randomly allocated to the YinQiSanHuang Jiedu decoction (YQSHD) group (n = 401) or the placebo group (n = 401). The YQSHD group receives YQSHD granule with entecavir (ETV), and the placebo group receives YQSHD placebo with ETV. The treatment period will last for 52 weeks, and the follow-up period for 52 ± 2 weeks. The primary outcome measure is the annual incidence of HCC. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline and after treatment. The objective of this trial is “the integrative of YQSHD with ETV reduce the annual incidence of HCC to 1%.” Ethics and dissemination The protocol has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Guang’anmen Hospital, China (No.2019-006-KY), and the other centers in the trial will not begin recruiting until the local ethical approval has been obtained. OBJECTIVE To compare the safety differences between Chinese medicine (CM) and Western medicine (WM) based on Chinese Spontaneous Reporting Database (CSRD). METHODS Reports of adverse events (AEs) caused by CM and WM in the CSRD between 2010 and 2011 were selected. The following assessment indicators were constructed: the proportion of serious AEs (PSE), the average number of AEs (ANA), and the coverage rate of AEs (CRA). Further comparisons were also conducted, including the drugs with the most reported serious AEs, the AEs with the biggest report number, and the 5 serious AEs of interest (including death, anaphylactic shock, coma, dyspnea and abnormal liver function). RESULTS The PSE, ANA and CRA of WM were 1.09, 8.23 and 2.35 times higher than those of CM, respectively. The top 10 drugs with the most serious AEs were mainly injections for CM and antibiotics for WM. The AEs with the most reports were rash, pruritus, nausea, dizziness and vomiting for both CM and WM. The proportions of CM and WM in anaphylactic shock and coma were similar. For abnormal liver function and death, the proportions of WM were 5.47 and 3.00 times higher than those of CM, respectively. CONCLUSION Based on CSRD, CM was safer than WM at the average level from the perspective of adverse drug reactions.

Compound Danshen dropping pill (CDDP), a famous Chinese medicine formula, has been widely used to treat high-altitude heart disease in China. However, its molecular mechanisms, potential targets, and bioactive ingredients remain elusive. In this study, network pharmacology, molecular docking, and validation experiments were combined to investigate the effective active ingredients and molecular mechanisms of CDDP in the treatment of high-altitude heart disease. Tan IIA may be the main active component of CDDP in the treatment of high-altitude heart disease via HIF-1/PI3K/Akt pathways.

Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has special advantages in relieving HCC, while Astragalus membranaceus is commonly used in TCM treatment. However, its underlying mechanisms for treatment of HCC are unclear. Methods Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of Astragalus membranaceus treatment in HepG2 cells were identified, and Astragalus membranaceus-gene network was constructed. The hub genes were then obtained via protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Gene Ontology (GO), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) were subsequently performed. Furthermore, prognosis genes related to HCC from The Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) was identified to explore the correlation between Astragalus membranaceus treatment and prognosis of HCC. Finally, Astragalus membranaceus-component-target network was established through SymMap. Results Twenty five DEGs (15 up-regulated and 10 down-regulated) of Astragalus membranaceus treatment in HepG2 cells were identified. Among the 25 genes, MT1F, MT1G, MT1X and HMOX1 may play essential roles. Astragalus membranaceus mainly affects the Mineral absorption pathway in HCC. A total of 256 genes (p Astragalus membranaceus may directly down-regulate MT1G through daidzein to promote ferroptosis of HCC cells and improve prognosis for HCC. Conclusion Our study provided new understandings of the pharmacological mechanisms by which Astragalus membranaceus improves the prognosis of HCC, and showed that the combination of transcriptomics and network pharmacology is helpful to explore mechanisms of TCM and traditional medicines from other nations.

Context Qingluoyin (QLY) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula which has been used in treating human rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for years in China. Objective This study investigates the effect of QLY granules on adjuvant arthritis (AA) and the possible mechanism. Materials and methods Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were injected with Complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) to induce the AA model. After the onset of arthritis, rats received intragastric administrations of the QLY granules (1.35, 2.70, and 5.40 g/kg) or Tripterygium glycosides (TG) tablets (positive drug, 10 mg/kg) for 14 d. After 28 d immunization, the symptoms, inflammatory parameters and molecular mechanisms were investigated. Results In the QLY granule (1.35, 2.70, and 5.40 g/kg) therapy groups, the arthritis index decreased to 6.30 ± 2.06, 5.80 ± 1.55, 5.30 ± 1.16 compared with the model (9.00 ± 3.01), paw swelling decreased to 1.56 ± 0.40, 1.28 ± 0.38, 1.12 ± 0.41 mL compared with the model (2.22 ± 0.73 mL). QLY granules (1.35, 2.70 and 5.40 g/kg) significantly reduced the thymus and the spleen indexes, inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and alleviated the pathological changes of joints compared with the model group. Furthermore, the treatment of QLY granules (2.70 and 5.40 g/kg) markedly inhibited CXCL12, CXCR4 (in spleen and synovium) and p-NF-κB p65 (in synovium) protein expression of AA rats. Conclusions QLY granules have obvious therapeutic effects on AA rats, which may be associated with downregulating the CXCL12/CXCR4-NF-κB signalling pathway. QLY granules can be used as a candidate for the treatment of RA, which deserves further study.

Background Acupuncture is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine which is used to treat an array of health conditions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of acupuncture in the management of restless leg syndrome (RLS). Methods A comprehensive literature survey was conducted in electronic databases to identify studies evaluating the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of RLS. Cure, marked effect, effective, ineffective, and total effective rates of individual studies were pooled to achieve their respective overall estimates and a meta-analysis of mean change from baseline in International Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale (IRLSRS) was performed. Results A total of 18 studies were included in this meta-analysis, among which 640 RLS patients were treated with acupuncture alone or combined with other therapies (acupuncture group) and 447 RLS patients were treated with non-acupuncture therapies (control group). Cure, marked effect, and effective rates were 47.8% [95% confidence interval (CI): 38.3% to 57.3%], 27.4% (95% CI: 20.3% to 34.8%), and 24.2% (95% CI: 16.9% to 31.5%) in patients treated with acupuncture either alone or combination with other treatments, and 21.7% (95% CI: 20.7% to 22.7%), 28.0% (95% CI: 20.0% to 32.9%), and 22.3% (95% CI: 17.0% to 27.6%) in patients treated with non-acupuncture therapies, respectively. The ineffective rate was 4.7% (95% CI: 4.3% to 5.0%) in the acupuncture group and 32.9% (95% CI: 22.2% to 43.7%) in non-acupuncture groups. IRLSRS scores improved significantly after acupuncture treatment [mean change from baseline -9.45 (95% CI: -18.42 to -0.49); P=0.04]. Discussion Although the overall quality of the included studies was low, the results of this meta-analysis suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment option for RLS. Well-designed randomized controlled trials especially those involving a sham-acupuncture arm are needed to confirm these outcomes.

To clarify the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) bath in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris, meta-analysis and systematic evaluation were adopted to comprehensively evaluate the published articles.Combing the terms "traditional Chinese medicine bath" and "psoriasis vulgaris", the articles were searched for in the databases of China Knowledge Network (CNKI), Baidu scholar, Wanfang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Weipu Database, Medline, Embase, Chinese Medical Citation Index (CMCI), and PubMed. The quality of articles was evaluated using the RevMan 5.3 software provided by the Cochrane system.A total of 13 articles were included. From the funnel chart drawn, it could be seen that the circles and the midline of most articles were not symmetrical, and the publication was biased, so the conclusions obtained were relatively credible. The heterogeneity analysis of TCM bath in treatment of psoriasis vulgaris showed that 13 articles reporting the total effective rate (TER) and the TERs of the two groups displayed obvious differences [P0.05, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.9 to 4.77]; there were 8 articles reporting the incidence of adverse reactions, and the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups was greatly different (P0.05, 95% CI: 0.22 to 0.77); and there were 9 articles reporting the psoriasis area and severity index, and the overall efficacy was greatly different between the two groups (P0.05, 95% CI: -5.38 to -1.88).The TER of the meta-analysis of treatment in this study was higher in the experimental group; the incidence of adverse reactions was lower in the experimental group; and the area and severity of psoriasis were lower in the experimental group, so it was concluded that the TCM bath had a significant effect on the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris.

To investigate the correlation between intestinal flora and serum inflammatory factors IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and hs-CRP in post-stroke depression (PSD) in ischemic stroke patients.Observational study. Study Place and Duration of Study: Jiulongpo District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chongqing City, China, from October 2018 to May 2020.One hundred and sixty-three patients with ischemic stroke were divided into Group A (PSD) and Group B (no PSD), according to whether they had PSD. Intestinal flora indexes (Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Bifidobacterium) and serum IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and hs-CRP were detected.Among 163 patients with ischemic stroke, 67 (41.10%) had PSD (Group A) and 96 (58.90%) had no PSD (Group B). Contents of Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli in Group A were higher than those in Group B (both p0.001), and content of Bifidobacterium in Group A was lower than that in Group B (p0.001). Serum IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and hs-CRP levels in Group A were higher than those in Group B (all p0.001). Pearson correlation test showed that contents of Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli in Group A were positively correlated with IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and hs-CRP, and content of Bifidobacterium was negatively correlated with IL-1, IL-2, IL-6 and hs-CRP.There are intestinal flora imbalance and Bifidobacterium undergrowth in patients with PSD, which can lead to overexpression of serum inflammatory factors. Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias and can lead to heart failure (HF), stroke, pulmonary embolism (PE), and other complications, seriously affecting people’s quality of life and health. Western medicine is limited in the treatment of AF, while Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has unique advantages, such as less side effects, low toxicity, long effect duration, and high compliance. The prescription of HTDJ is a common prescription for the treatment of atrial fibrillation in Longhua Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been used for many years and has a large number of clinically effective cases. It has a good clinical application prospect, but there is a lack of effective evaluation of its clinical efficacy. Method This study adopts a randomized double-blind, single-simulated, placebo-controlled research method. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio through a centrally controlled, computer-generated, simple randomization schedule. Participants would take the medicine for 1 month, and the curative effect would be evaluated. Subsequently, the participants would not take TCM and only receive western medicine treatment. They would be followed up for another 8 weeks, and a clinical evaluation would be conducted. The secondary outcomes include echocardiography, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Hamilton Depression Scale, rate of increase and decrease of anti-arrhythmia western medicine, the MOS 36-item short-form health survey, N-terminal-pro hormone B-type natriuretic peptide level, and integral TCM syndrome score. Adverse events will be monitored throughout the trial. Cases are from outpatient and inpatient with atrial fibrillation in the Cardiology Department of Longhua Hospital. Evaluations will be conducted at baseline and at weeks 4 and 12 after randomization. Discussion In this study, the efficacy and safety of HTDJ plus western medicine in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (qi deficiency and phlegm opacities) will be evaluated, so as to provide medical evidence of short-term and medium-term clinical efficacy for the treatment of atrial fibrillation with integrated traditional and western medicine and lay a foundation for further clinical development and application.
