nkylosing spondylitis (AS), also known as Marie-Strum- pell disease, is a member of the family of spondyloar- thritides, which include psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, and arthritis related to inflammatory bowel disease. AS was first reported in 1897 (21) and has a prevalence of 0.1%e 1.4%. It is twice as common in male patients compared with female patients (7); typically affects patients between 20 and 40 years old; and is generally symptomatic causing joint pain, including back pain and stiffness (2).
