Aims: Carbon monoxide poisoning is a common condition that can cause severe neurological sequelae. Previous studies have revealed that functional connectivity in carbon monoxide poisoning is abnormal under the assumption that it is resting during scanning and have focused on studying delayed encephalopathy in carbon monoxide poisoning. However, studies of functional connectivity dynamics in the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning may provide a more insightful perspective for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying carbon monoxide poisoning. To our knowledge, this is the first study that explores abnormal brain network dynamics in the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning.Methods: Combining the sliding window method and k-means algorithm, we identified four recurrent dynamic functional cognitive impairment states from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 29 patients in the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning and 29 healthy controls. We calculated between-group differences in the temporal properties and intensity of dFC states, and we also performed subgroup analyses to separately explore the brain network dynamics characteristics of adult vs. child carbon monoxide poisoning groups. Finally, these differences were correlated with patients’ cognitive performance in the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning and coma duration.Results: We identified four morphological patterns of brain functional network connectivity. During the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning, patients spent more time in State 2, which is characterized by positive correlation between SMN and CEN, and negative correlation between DMN and SMN. In addition, the fractional window and mean dwell time of State 2 were positively correlated with coma duration. The subgroup analysis results demonstrated that the acute phase of childhood carbon monoxide poisoning had greater dFNC time variability than adult carbon monoxide poisoning.Conclusion: Our findings reveal that patients in the acute phase of carbon monoxide poisoning exhibit dynamic functional abnormalities. Furthermore, children have greater dFNC instability following carbon monoxide poisoning than adults. This advances our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

Background Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes the dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. In this study, we examined the effects of riluzole, a sustained activator of the TRAAK potassium channel, on human RPE (ARPE-19) cells in an oxidant-induced cell-injury model and elucidate the mechanism of riluzole on RPE cell apoptosis. Methods The follow four groups of ARPE-19 cells were treated with riluzole and/or tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) for 24.0 h: control, t-BHP, riluzole, and t-BHP + riluzole. Cell apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry, and Western blotting was performed to analyze the expression of the weakly inward rectifying potassium (TRAAK) channel. Finally, the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm) was detected by flow cytometry, and cytochrome C (Cyt-c) release was assessed by Western blotting. Results The viability of the cells in the cotreated group was significantly higher (85.6 ± 3.1%) than that in the t-BHP group (66.2 ± 2.5%). In addition, the cells in the cotreated group had a higher effect on increasing the expression of TRAAK than the t-BHP group. The results also showed that Cyt-c translocation significantly decreased and Δψm increased in the cotreated group. Conclusions These results demonstrate that riluzole protects RPE cells from apoptosis. The protection mechanism of riluzole could be from stabilizing mitochondrial Δψm and preventing the release of Cyt-c. Changes in TRAAK expression might also contribute to the protection of RPE cells.

BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the utility of albumin-to-glutamyltransferase ratio (AGR) as a new biomarker to distinguish hepatic carcinoma from hepatitis, as early disease diagnosis, prognosis or monitoring could improve patient management and outcomes. METHODS Clinical characteristics of 34 hepatitis (women 19), 88 cirrhosis (women 22) and 52 hepatic carcinoma (women 9) cases were retrospectively reviewed. Patients diagnosed with cirrhosis were classified by Child-Pugh score and the presence of ascites. The differences among groups were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U. The linear correlation between variables was assessed by Spearman's correlation analysis. The diagnostic value of albumin-to-glutamyltransferase (AGR) was considered using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Multiple logistic regression analysis and univariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify AGR as an independent predictor in liver disease progression. RESULTS The significant differences among the hepatitis vs. cirrhosis vs. and hepatic carcinoma were AST (108.50 ± 184.00 vs. 38.00 ± 21.50 vs. 47.00 ± 71.00, p < 0.01), TP/AST (TAR, 0.67 ± 0.69 vs. 1.77 ± 0.87 vs. 1.36 ± 0.95, p < 0.01), and ALB/GGT (AGR, 0.32 ± 0.27 vs. 0.67 ± 0.43 vs. 0.20 ± 0.26, p < 0.05). At the same time, AST (32.00 ± 13.50 vs. 53.00 ± 23.00 vs. 114.50 ± 42.50, p < 0.05) and TAR (2.15 ± 0.72 vs. 1.28 ± 0.74 vs. 0.64 ± 0.39, p < 0.05) were higher but AGR (0.86 ± 0.54 vs. 0.46 ± 0.32 vs. 0.26 ± 0.22, p < 0.05) was lower in Child-Pugh class C group compared with group B and C. TAR (1.92 ± 0.73 vs. 0.98 ± 0.89, p < 0.01) and AGR (0.79 ± 0.52 vs. 0.46 ± 0.28, p < 0.05) were significantly elevated in the serum of cirrhosis with no ascites compared with the cirrhosis patients suffered from ascites, while AST (35.00 ± 14.50 vs. 63.00 ± 44.50, p < 0.01) was reduced in cirrhosis patients with no ascites. The aim of this study is to assess the value of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in detecting the changes of microstructure and volume changes in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Seventy-two SNHL children and 38 healthy individuals received conventional MRI, DKI examination of the brain. IntroductionDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is the main cause of adult visual impairment worldwide. Severe non-proliferative DR (sNPDR) is an important clinical intervention stage. Currently, panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) is the standard treatment for sNPDR. However, PRP alone cannot completely prevent NPDR progression. One explanation might be that PRP does not remove the detrimental vitreous that plays an important role in DR progression. Microinvasive pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was shown to be a safe and effective method to treat late-stage proliferative DR (PDR) by completely removing the pathological vitreous. However, whether PPV is effective in controlling sNPDR remains unknown. In this trial, we aim to compare the effectiveness of microinvasive PPV with that of PRP for sNPDR progression control.Methods and analysisThis single centre, parallel group, randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of microinvasive PPV in preventing the progression of sNPDR compared with PRP. A total of 272 adults diagnosed with sNPDR will be randomised 1:1 to the microinvasive PPV and PRP groups. The primary outcome is the disease progression rate, calculated as the rate of sNPDR progressed to PDR from baseline to 12 months after treatment. The secondary outcomes include the change in best-corrected visual acuity, re-treatment rate, diabetic macular oedema occurrence, change in central retinal thickness, change in the visual field, cataract occurrence and change in the quality of life.Ethics and disseminationThe Ethics Committee of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center approved this study (2019KYPJ108). Our objective was to evaluate age-dependent changes in microstructure and metabolism in the auditory neural pathway, of children with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and to differentiate between good and poor surgical outcome cochlear implantation (CI) patients by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).Ninety-two SNHL children (49 males, 43 females; mean age, 4.9 years) were studied by conventional MR imaging, DTI and MRS. Patients were divided into three groups: Group A consisted of children≤1 years old (n=20), Group B consisted of children 1-3 years old (n=31), and group C consisted of children 3-14 years old (n=41). Among the 31 patients (19 males and 12 females, 12m- 14y ) with CI, 18 patients (mean age 4.8±0.7 years) with a categories of auditory performance (CAP) score over five were classified into the good outcome group and 13 patients (mean age, 4.4±0.7 years) with a CAP score below five were classified into the poor outcome group. Two DTI parameters, fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), were measured in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) and auditory radiation. Regions of interest for metabolic change measurements were located inside the STG. DTI values were measured based on region-of-interest analysis and MRS values for correlation analysis with CAP scores.Compared with healthy individuals, 92 SNHL patients displayed decreased FA values in the auditory radiation and STG (p0.05). Only decreased FA values in the auditory radiation was observed in Group A. Decreased FA values in the auditory radiation and STG were both observed in B and C groups. However, in Group C, the N-acetyl aspartate/creatinine ratio in the STG was also significantly decreased (p0.05). Correlation analyses at 12 months post-operation revealed strong correlations between the FA, in the auditory radiation, and CAP scores (r=0.793, p0.01).DTI and MRS can be used to evaluate microstructural alterations and metabolite concentration changes in the auditory neural pathway that are not detectable by conventional MR imaging. The observed changes in FA suggest that children with SNHL have a developmental delay in myelination in the auditory neural pathway, and it also display greater metabolite concentration changes in the auditory cortex in older children, suggest that early cochlear implantation might be more effective in restoring hearing in children with SNHL. Rationale The prevalence of ectopic thyroid is extremely low, with the condition observed in approximately 1 in 100,000 to 300,000 people. Thyroid gland ectopia develops as a result of the presence of developmental abnormalities during the migration of the thyroid anlage from the floor of the primitive foregut to its final position in the neck. Ectopic thyroid tissue is commonly observed in the lingual region, but can also present in other head and neck regions, as well as regions located at a large distance from the neck. Patient concerns A 67-year-old woman who had experienced left lumbago and leg pain was transferred to our hospital following the worsening of her lumbago-related symptoms in the 2 months preceding her presentation. Seven years ago, the patient had recurrent lumbago and leg pain without obvious inducement, and visited a local clinic for treatment. The severity of her symptoms fluctuated; their intensity increased after participation in activities and decreased after rest. Diagnoses The patient was diagnosed as having an ectopic thyroid gland that was located on the L4 vertebral body. Interventions The patient chose to undergo surgery, with supportive care, following tumor discovery. Outcomes After surgical treatment, the degree of lumbar spinal stenosis improved, and the patient's clinical symptoms were alleviated. Lessons Clinically, ectopic goiter is diagnosed through radionuclide thyroid imaging, ultrasound examination, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and biopsy pathology. However, the imaging manifestations in this case were atypical, leading to greater diagnostic difficulties. A conclusion was finally reached based on pathology.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are the most common metabolic diseases globally. They are associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, autophagy, and insulin resistance. Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitor, has been reported to show multiple biological activities beyond the antidiabetic property. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of sitagliptin on hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, inflammation, and autophagy and exploring the underlying molecular mechanism. In the current study, ob/ob mice, a mouse model of genetic obesity and diabetes, were administered via gavage with sitagliptin 50 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks. Changes in glycolipid metabolism, inflammatory responses, and autophagy in the liver were evaluated. Body weight gain, lipid metabolic disorder, and hepatic steatosis as well as systemic and hepatic insulin sensitivity in ob/ob mice were significantly attenuated after sitagliptin treatment. Furthermore, sitagliptin decreased inflammatory responses by regulating macrophage M1/M2 polarization and inhibiting the activities of NF-κB and JNK. Moreover, sitagliptin increased the levels of phosphorylation of AMPK and decreased those of mTOR. This study indicates that sitagliptin significantly ameliorates the development of hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance in ob/ob mice by inhibiting inflammatory responses and activating autophagy via AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

Our aim was to assess microstructural alterations in the cerebrums of paediatric patients with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) using diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). Seventy-two paediatric SNHL patients and 38 age-matched healthy volunteers were examined via DKI using a 3.0 T magnetic resonance (MR) imager. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean kurtosis (MK) values were computed for 12 cerebral regions in both the controls and the SNHL patients. Compared with patients below age 3, patients in the older age group were found to have more significant differences in MK than in FA, and these appeared in more major areas of the brain. In contrast, in 1- to 3-year-old children, a few major brain areas exhibited differences in FA, but none exhibited appreciable differences in MK. There were significant decreases in the FA or MK values (P all) in more areas of the brain in patients with lesions than in patients with normal-appearing brains. DKI offers comprehensive measurements for quantitative evaluation of age-related microstructural changes in both white and grey matter in SNHL patients. DKI scans of children with SNHL exhibiting significant decreases in MK might play an important role in evaluating the severity of developmental delay.

Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is an extension of Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) but based on a non-gaussian diffusion model, allowing more comprehensive characterization of microstructural changes in the brain. The aim of this research was to test the technical feasibility to microstructural changes in the brain of rats with acute alcohol intoxication. Changes in DTI parameters and DKI parameters in the cerebral cortex and the thalamus were investigated in the acute alcohol intoxication rat models (n=25) at the acute (30 min) stages following ethyl alcohol (EtOH) administration. The aim of this study is to assess the value of resting-state fMRI in detecting the acute effects of alcohol on healthy human brains. Thirty-two healthy volunteers were studied by conventional MR imaging and resting-state fMRI prior to and 0.5 hours after initiation of acute alcohol administration. The fMRI data, acquired during the resting state, were correlated with different breath alcohol concentrations (BrAC). We use the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus as a seed for the default mode network (DMN) analysis. ALFF and ReHo were also used to investigate spontaneous neural activity in the resting state. Conventional MR imaging showed no abnormalities on all subjects. Compared with the prior alcohol administration, the ALFF and ReHo also indicated some specific brain regions which are affected by alcohol, including the superior frontal gyrus, cerebellum, hippocampal gyrus, left basal ganglia, and right internal capsule. Functional connectivity of the DMN was affected by alcohol. This resting-state fMRI indicates that brain regions implicated are affected by alcohol and might provide a neural basis for alcohol’s effects on behavioral performance.

The purpose of this article is to describe mortality trends in different highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) periods and associated factors among AIDS patients in Guangxi, China. We prospectively analyzed AIDS patients in Guangxi between 2001 and 2011; demographic characteristics were compared among AIDS patients diagnosed in three treatment periods (pre-HAART: 2001-2004, early-HAART: 2005-2008, and late-HAART: 2009-2011). AIDS mortality was calculated by person-years, and treatment coverage was defined as the proportion of time that patients who were eligible for treatment received treatment. Factors of AIDS mortality were determined by a Cox proportional hazard regression. Of 19,020 AIDS patients, overall mortality declined from 41.1 per 100 person-years in 2001 to 13.3 per 100 person-years in 2011 with treatment coverage increasing from zero to 72.1%. The overall median survival figure was 5.6 years (95% CI: 4.4-6.8) with 60.3% for 5-year survival rate. After AIDS diagnosis, the mortality rate peaked in the first year, and 37.4% patients were still active in the ninth year. Protective factors for mortality were AIDS patients diagnosed from 2009 to 2011 (AHR=0.75, 95% CI: 0.58-0.89), having received HAART (AHR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.50-0.87), and having a CD4 count of higher than 350 cells/μl at AIDS diagnosis (AHR=0.79, 95% CI: 0.60-0.92). Risk factors for mortality included being male (AHR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.07-1.43), living in a rural area (AHR=1.40, 95% CI: 1.18-1.94), and being aged ≥60 years at AIDS diagnosis (AHR=1.36, 95% CI: 1.18-1.73). A decline in AIDS mortality was observed in Guangxi with a concomitant increase in treatment coverage. Some subpopulations of AIDS patients, such as males, rural residents, and the old, require more medical care.

Milt volume in goldfish (Carassius auratus) is known to increase in response to both spawning interactions with prostaglandin F2α-injected females (spawning stimuli) and a steroidal pheromone, 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P). In this study, we sought evidence that spawning stimuli and 17,20β-P increase milt volume via different mechanisms, by determining latency of the milt response, and by comparing the effects of water temperature, hypophysectomy, and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection on milt response. At both 21 and 11°C, spawning stimuli increased milt volume within 2 hr, whereas 17,20β-P exposure or hCG injection did not increase milt volume until 4-6 hr at 21°C and 12-24 hr at 11°C. Hypophysectomy did not block spawning-induced milt increase but did block 17,20β-P-induced milt increase, consistent with earlier studies showing that pheromonal 17,20β-P acts by increasing blood gonadotropin-II (GtH-II) level. Furthermore, in males injected with hCG to swamp the effect of 17,20β-P-induced GtH-II increase, milt increase was observed in response to spawning stimuli but not to 17,20β-P exposure. These results indicate that distinct mechanisms mediate the effects of spawning stimuli and 17,20β-P on milt volume in goldfish. 17,20β-P evidently acts by releasing pituitary GtH-II, whereas the mechanism mediating the effect of spawning stimuli is unknown. The role of these two mechanisms in made reproductive function is discussed. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The aim of this study is to assess the effects of alcohol on traumatic brain injury by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and evaluate aquaporin-4(AQP4) expression changes in rat brainstems following acute alcohol intoxication with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). We further investigated the correlation between the AQP4 expression and DTI in the brain edema. Eighty-five rats were imaged before and after injury at various stages. DTI was used to measure brainstem apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA), with immunostaining being used to determine AQP4 expression. After acute alcoholism with DAI, ADC values of the brainstem first decreased within 6 h and then elevated. FA values began to decline by 1 h, reaching a minimum at 24 h after trauma. There was a negative correlation between ADC values and brainstem AQP4 expression at 6 h and positive correlation at 6 h to 24 h. Changes of ADC and FA values in DAI with acute alcoholism indicate the effects of ethanol on brain edema and the severity of axonal injury. The correlations between ADC values and the brainstem AQP4 expression at different time points suggest that AQP4 expression follows an adaptative profile to the severity of brain edema.

This study examined the effect of a putative steroidal pheromone, 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P) on milt volume and serum gonadotropin-II in precocious male common carp (40–285 g). 17,20β-P significantly increased both milt volume (14–18 h post-exposure) and GtH level (90 min post-exposure) at both doses tested (5 × 10−11 and 5 × 10−10 M in aquarium water), whereas a conjugated form of 17,20β-P (17,20β-P-sulphate) was ineffective at the only dose tested (5 × 10−11 M). Increases in milt, packed sperm volume, and GtH following exposure 5 × 10−10 M 17,20β-P also were compared to those induced by injection of Ovaprim (Syndel; mixture of salmon GnRH analogue and dopamine receptor antagonist) at two doses (0.1 and 0.5 ml/kg body weight). Increases in milt and GtH induced by the high Ovaprim dose were significantly greater than those induced by 5 × 10−10 M 17,20β-P. Increases in milt, and packed sperm volume, and GtH induced by the lower Ovaprim dose were not significantly larger than those induced by 17,20β-P. The results suggest: (1) in common carp, 17,20β-P has a pheromonal role in milt production similar to that demonstrated in goldfish; (2) waterborne 17,20β-P might be a practical non-invasive technique for enhancing milt production in cultured common carp.

Although conventional structural MRI provides vital information in the evaluation of congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), it is relatively insensitive to white matter microstructure. Our objective was to evaluate possible changes in microstructure of the auditory pathway in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and the possible distinction between good and poor outcome of cochlear implantation (CI) patients by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Twenty-four patients with congenital SNHL and 20 healthy controls underwent conventional MRI and DTI examination using a 1.5T MR scanner. The DTI metrics of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) of six regions of interest (ROIs) positioned along the auditory pathway-the trapezoid body, superior olivary nucleus, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body, auditory radiation and white matter of Heschl's gyrus-was measured in all subjects. Among the 24 patients, 8 patients with a categorie of auditory performance (CAP) score over 6 were classified into the good outcome group, and 16 patients with a CAP score below 6 were classified into the poor outcome group. A significant decrease was observed in FA values while MD values remained unchanged at the six ROIs of SNHL patients compared with healthy controls. Compared to good outcome subjects, poor outcome subjects displayed decreased FA values at all of the ROIs. No changes were observed in MD values. Correlation analyses only revealed strong correlations between FA values and CAP scores, and strong correlations between CAP scores and age at implant were also found. No correlations of FA values with age at implant were observed. Our results show that preoperative DTI can be used to evaluate microstructural alterations in the auditory pathway that are not detectable by conventional MR imaging, and may play an important role in evaluating the outcome of CI. Early cochlear implantation might be more effectively to restore hearing in SNHL patients.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the hypothesis that the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) values combined with initial clinical factors indicates the depth of shearing lesions in the brain structure and therefore relates to coma duration of diffuse axonal injury (DAI). Seventy-four adult patients (48 male and 26 female patients) with diffuse axonal injury were examined with convention MR imaging and diffusion weighted MR imaging between 2 hours and 20 days after injury. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were obtained and the mean ADC values of each Region of Interest (ROI) were measured using MRI console software. The lesions involvement of brainstem, deep gray matter, and corpus callosum were determined for each sequence separately as well as for the combination of all sequences. The correlations between magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of presence of apparent brain injury combined with initial clinical factors were investigated. Clinical characteristics, such as initial score on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), age, and the number of all lesions, ADC scores of the patient in MR findings were predictive of the duration of coma. Post-traumatic coma duration of DAI could be predicted by cerebral MRI findings in the acute to subacute stage after head injury combined with clinical prognostic factors. Age, ADC scores, GCS, number of lesions are highly significant in predicting coma duration. The technique presented herein might provide a tool for in vivo detection of DAI for the coma duration at the early stages in patients with traumatic brain injury.

The olfactory-mediated responses to the sex hormone 17 alpha,20 beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17 alpha,20 beta-P) were studied in spermiated and regressed male crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.). The position and spontaneous locomotor activity of single male crucian carp were continuously recorded in an artificial stream. 17 alpha,20 beta-P (final concentration 10(-11) M) was supplied to one half and its ethanol carrier to the other half of the test area. Milt volume and gonadotropin (GtH-II) concentration in the plasma were also measured. The smell of 17 alpha,20 beta-P significantly increased both the GtH-II concentration in the plasma and the volume of strippable milt in spermiated crucian carp. Behaviorally, the side of the test area scented with 17 alpha,20 beta-P was significantly avoided by spermiated males. None of the described effects of 17 alpha,20 beta-P on spermiated males were observed for the regressed crucian carp. In view of the lack of response from regressed crucian carp we suggest that the observed avoidance behavior of 17 alpha,20 beta-P by spermiated males is a relevant reaction for spawning male crucian carp. The results are well in accordance with responses obtained in the closely related goldfish and gives strong support that the wild male crucian carp use the 17 alpha,20 beta-P signal from the females to prepare for the coming spawning.

Objective: Assessing the value of ALFF and ReHo in detecting the acute effects of alcohol on healthy human brains. Background Prior studies report that amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) in the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal are used to assess functional connectivity between different brain regions in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Design/Methods: Eight healthy volunteers were studied with conventional MR imaging and resting-state fMRI prior to and 0.5 h, 1.5 h, 2.5 h after the initiation of acute alcohol administration. With fMRI data acquired during resting state from different time course, we used a ALFF and ReHo method to investigate spontaneous neural activity in the resting state. Breath alcohol concentrations (BrACs) were measured at each time point after drinking to estimate blood alcohol concentrations (BACs). Results: No abnormalities were found by conventional MR imaging at every time point of all subjects. The fMRI analyses showed increasing ReHo in cerebellum, left postcentral gyrus, right frontal region and increasing ALFF in left precentral gyrus, right medial frontal after acute alcohol administration. It also showed decreasing ReHo in left superior temporal gyrus, left cuneus and decreasing ALFF in cerebellum, left frontal region, and right cuneus. BrAC (BAC) were significantly increased to reach a peak at 0.5 h of both doses and decreasing gradually. Conclusions: This resting-state fMRI indicates that brain regions implicated are affected by alcohol and might provide a neural basis for alcohol9s effects on behavioral performance. Objective To analyze the chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) findings of human infection with avian-origin influenza H7N9 virus from a hospital. Materials and methods Chest X-ray or CT was performed in five patients with H7N9 avian influenza within 2 weeks after onset. The chest imaging data and characteristics of five patients were analyzed retrospectively. Results Abnormal findings were shown on chest X-ray and CT images in all of the patients. The main abnormal findings included ground-glass opacities (GGOs) in all five cases, consolidations with air bronchograms and pleural effusion in four patients. In the early onset of four patients, the right lobe was more commonly affected (particularly in the right lower lobes). Over the course of disease, the lesions were rapidly progressed to bilateral lungs, and from focal or multifocal to diffuse. Ipsilateral pleural effusion also appeared and developed with the coexisting consolidation. Imaging findings closely reflected the overall clinical progression and severity of the disease. Conclusion With the right lower lobe prominence, the main abnormal findings in H7N9 pneumonia include rapidly progressive GGOs, consolidations with air bronchograms, and pleural effusion. CT imaging may provide a more accurate assessment of the lung pathology with H7N9 avian influenza, helping the early diagnosis and monitoring its progression.
