Background: Oesophageal atresia (OA) has associated anomalies in 50 to 70 % of cases. The usual associations include cardiac, gastrointestinal, anorectal, renal, vertebral, or skeletal anomalies. Oesophageal duplication cyst as an association in OA is extremely rare. Despite the related embryogenesis of these two anomalies, there are very few cases reported. Case Presentation: We present a low-birth-weight neonate with Type C Tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TEF) with an associated oesophageal duplication cyst. Conclusion: Upper pouch oesophageal duplication with TEF is very rare and this is the fourth case managed concomitantly at primary surgery in English literature available.

Very few cases of cervical oesophageal duplication cysts have been reported in literature. A 37-year-old male patient was referred to with progressive breathlessness, intermittent and a troublesome nighttime cough. He was a never smoker. He had asthma until his early teenage years and had since been asymptomatic. He was on inhaled long-acting bronchodilators and steroids. A chest

A 7-year old intact male Rottweiler dog was evaluated for recurrent dysphagia and regurgitation. Physical examination was unremarcable and routine blood works were within normal limits. Compute tomography revealed a defined lesion in the caudal mediastinum arising from the oesophagus. The lesion was excised using intercostal thoracotomy and the histological diagnosis was oesophageal duplication cyst. The dog recovered aneventfully and at a three-year follow-up no clinical signs were reported. Although extremely rare oesophageal duplication cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis in cases of chronic regurgitation and dysphagia associated with evidence of an oesophageal lesion.

The cystic appearance of both oesophageal duplications and pulmonary hydatid cysts can cause a misdiagnosis very easily due to rarity of cystic oesophageal duplications beside the higher incidence of hydatid cyst, especially in endemic areas. Here we report a 7-year-old girl with an oesophageal duplication cyst on the left side misdiagnosed as a hydatid cyst. The aim of the study is to report rare oesophageal duplications in the differential diagnosis of intrathoracic cysts.

A 4-year-old boy presented with vomiting and recurrent cough. He was investigated and found to have thoracic oesophageal duplication cyst. He was taken up for thoracoscopic removal of the cyst. The cyst was attached to the oesophagus and shared a common wall. The boy tolerated the procedure well and follow-up showed no recurrence of the cyst with total resolution of the symptoms. We share our experience with the management of this boy.

Duplication cysts are congenital cystic malformation of the alimentary tract consisting of a duplication of the segment to which it is adjacent. It can occur anywhere from mouth to anus. Oesophageal duplication cysts comprise 4% of the same. Of these, total intra-abdominal oesophageal duplication cysts are extremely rare. On review of literature, only 3 case reports of total intra-abdominal oesophageal duplication managed laparoscopically are found. All these cases were adults. We report the first paediatric case of intra-abdominal oesophageal duplication cyst excised laparoscopically.

Foregut duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies of enteric origin. In majority of the patients, the diagnosis is made in infancy. The authors report 4 cases of mediastinal foregut duplication cyst in children diagnosed on CT/MRI and confirmed on histopathology. In none of the cases the cysts had intraspinal extension nor heterotopic gastric mucosa.

Case summary An 18-month-old female domestic shorthair cat was referred for investigation of a 6 month period of regurgitation. Contrast radiography indicated an intramural oesophageal structure. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of the area retrieved viscous fluid containing high numbers of squamous epithelial cells. Computed tomography disclosed a thin-walled contrast-enhancing structure containing non-enhancing homogenous contents. Exploratory thoracotomy confirmed an intramural cystic oesophageal structure, which was resected. Histopathological analysis of the resected tissue demonstrated an intramural oesophageal duplication cyst. A 12 month follow-up period has seen complete resolution of the cat’s clinical signs. Relevance and novel information This is the first report of successful oesophageal duplication cyst removal in a cat. Oesophageal duplication cysts should be included on the differential list for dysphagia and regurgitation in cats. Complete surgical removal in this cat carried a good long-term outcome.

Duplication of the oesophagus is the second most common duplication of the gastrointestinal tract. Children with oesophageal duplication cyst usually present with dysphagia or as asymptomatic thoracic mass found o incidental chest x-ray. We report a case of oesophageal duplication cyst that presented with inspiratory stridor and dyspnoea in a 6 month old boy. Bronchoscopy revealed an external compression on the trachea. Duplication cyst arising from the oesophagus was suggested on CT and MRI. The cyst was surgically excised with resolution of symptoms.
