Plasmon-exciton interactions are important for many prominent spectroscopic applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering, plasmon-mediated fluorescence, nanoscale lasing, and strong coupling. The case of strong coupling is analogous to quantum optical effects studied in solid state and atomic systems previously. In plasmonics, similar observations have been almost exclusively made in elastic scattering experiments; however, the interpretation of these experiments is often cumbersome. Here, we demonstrate mode splitting not only in scattering, but also in photoluminescence of individual hybrid nanosystems, which manifests a direct proof of strong coupling in plasmon-exciton nanoparticles. We achieved these results due to saturation of the mode volume with molecular J-aggregates, which resulted in splitting up to 400 meV, that is, ∼20% of the resonance energy. We analyzed the correlation between scattering and photoluminescence and found that splitting in photoluminescence is considerably less than that in scattering. Moreover, we found that splitting in both photoluminescence and scattering signals increased upon cooling to cryogenic temperatures. These findings improve our understanding of strong coupling phenomena in plasmonics.

The optical response of metallic nanoparticle arrays is dominated by localized surface plasmon excitations and is the sum of individual particle contributions modified by interparticle coupling that depends on specific array geometry. We demonstrate a so far unexplored distinct oscillatory behavior of the plasmon peak position, full width at half maximum, and extinction efficiency in large area amorphous arrays of Au nanodisks, which depend on the minimum particle center-to-center distance in the array. Amorphous arrays exhibit short-range order and are completely random at long distances. In our theoretical analysis we introduce a film of dipoles approach, within the framework of the coupled dipole approximation, which describes the array as an average particle surrounded by a continuum of dipoles with surface densities determined by the pair correlation function of the array.

The nonradiative decay of a localized surface plasmon through absorption of a captured photon and excitation of an energetic electron-hole pair is a potentially very effective way to enhance chemical reactions on metal nanoparticle surfaces, so far limited to Ag (and Au). Here we explore the possibility of efficient and spectrally widely tunable optical absorption engineering based on heterometallic optical nanoantennas. They consist of an optimized antenna element made of Au (or Ag) and a catalytically active second metallic element separated by a thin SiO(2) layer. Specifically, we find that stacked Au-SiO(2)-Pd nanodisk antennas exhibit pronounced local absorption enhancement in the catalytic Pd particle. The effect is caused by efficient power transfer from the Au disk, exhibiting a narrow low-loss resonance and acting as an antenna collecting photons, to the Pd disk due to strong coupling between the two. The Pd element thus acts as receiver that efficiently dissipates energy into electron-hole pairs owing to efficient coupling to intra and interband transitions. In fact, the energy transfer is found to be so effective that the absorption efficiency at a given wavelength can be enhanced up to 6 to 9 times, and the total absorption integrated over a wide spectral range (400-900 nm) up to 2-fold, depending on the antenna dimensions. This finding suggests a novel route toward highly efficient plasmon-enhanced catalysis on widely selectable catalytic metal particle surfaces not limited to the "classic" plasmonic metals Au and Ag.
