The intensifying production and release into the environment as well as the increasing potential in agricultural applications make the relationship between plants and nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) a relevant and timely topic. The aim of this review is to give an overview and discuss the latest findings about the relationship of Ni NPs and plants. Ni NPs can be synthesized using phytochemicals derived from plant parts in an environmentally friendly manner. There are several ways for these nanoparticles to enter plant cells and tissues. This can be demonstrated through various imaging and chemical mapping approaches (e.g., transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy etc.). NiO NPs affect plants at multiple levels, including subcellular, cellular, tissue, organ, and whole-plant levels. However, the effects of Ni NPs on plants' ecological partners (e.g., rhizobiome, pollinators) remain largely unknown despite their ecotoxicological significance. The main cause of the Ni NPs-triggered damages is the reactive oxygen species imbalance as a consequence of the modulation of antioxidants. In non-tolerant plants, the toxicity of NiO NPs can be mitigated by exogenous treatments such as the application of silicon, salicylic acid, or jasmonic acid, which induce defense mechanisms whereas Ni-hypertolerant plant species possess endogenous defense systems, such as cell wall modifications and nitrosative signaling against NiO NP stress. Research highlights the role of Ni NPs in managing fungal diseases, showcasing their antifungal properties against specific pathogens. Carbon foam was synthesized by the carbonization of 4-nitroaniline. The reaction is an alternative of the well-known "carbon snake" (or sugar snake) demonstration experiment, which leads to the formation of nitrogen-doped carbon foils due to its nitrogen content. The synthesized carbon foils were grinded to achieve an efficient catalyst support. Palladium nanoparticles were deposited onto the surface of the support, which showed continuous distribution. The prepared Pd nanoparticle decorated carbon foils showed high catalytic activity in nitrobenzene hydrogenation. By applying the designed catalyst, total nitrobenzene conversion, a 99.1 n/n% aniline yield, and an exceptionally high selectivity (99.8 n/n%) were reached. Furthermore, the catalyst remained active during the reuse tests (four cycles) even without regeneration.

Purpose: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most commonly investigated nanomaterials, especially due to their biomedical applications. However, their excellent cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity is often compromised in biological media due to nanoparticle aggregation. In this work, the aggregation behavior and the related biological activity of three different samples of citrate capped silver nanoparticles, with mean diameters of 10, 20, and 50 nm, respectively, were examined., Methods: Following nanoparticle synthesis and characterization with transmission electron microscopy, their aggregation behavior under various pH values, NaCl, glucose, and glutamine concentrations, furthermore in cell culture medium components such as Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium and fetal bovine serum, was assessed through dynamic light scattering and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy., Results: The results indicated that acidic pH and physiological electrolyte content universally induce micron-scale aggregation, which can be mediated by biomolecular corona formation. Remarkably, larger particles demonstrated higher resistance against external influences than smaller counterparts. In vitro cytotoxicity and antimicrobial assays were performed by treating cells with nanoparticulate aggregates in differing stages of aggregation., Conclusion: Our results revealed a profound association between colloidal stability and toxicity of AgNPs, as extreme aggregation led to the complete loss of biological activity. The higher degree of aggregation resistance observed for larger particles had a significant impact on the in vitro toxicity, since such samples retained more of their activity against microbes and mammalian cells. Plant nanobiology as a novel research field provides a scientific basis for the agricultural use of nanoparticles (NPs). Plants respond to the presence of nanomaterials by synthesizing signal molecules, such as the multifunctional gaseous nitric oxide (NO). Several reports have described the effects of different nanomaterials (primarily chitosan NPs, metal oxide NPs, and carbon nanotubes) on endogenous NO synthesis and signalling in different plant species. Other works have demonstrated the ameliorating effect of exogenous NO donor (primarily sodium nitroprusside) treatments on NP-induced stress. NO-releasing NPs are preferred alternatives to chemical NO donors, and evaluating their effects on plants has recently begun. Previous studies clearly indicate that endogenous NO production in the presence of nanomaterials or NO levels increased by exogenous treatments (NO-releasing NPs or chemical NO donors) exerts growth-promoting and stress-ameliorating effects in plants. Background: Although accumulating evidence suggests that the crosstalk between malignant cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) actively contributes to tumour growth and metastatic dissemination, therapeutic strategies targeting tumour stroma are still not common in the clinical practice. Metal-based nanomaterials have been shown to exert excellent cytotoxic and anti-cancerous activities, however, their effects on the reactive stroma have never been investigated in details. Thus, using feasible in vitro and in vivo systems to model tumour microenvironment, we tested whether the presence of gold, silver or gold-core silver-shell nanoparticles exerts anti-tumour and metastasis suppressing activities by influencing the tumour-supporting activity of stromal fibroblasts., Results: We found that the presence of gold-core silver-shell hybrid nanomaterials in the tumour microenvironment attenuated the tumour cell-promoting behaviour of CAFs, and this phenomenon led to a prominent attenuation of metastatic dissemination in vivo as well. Mechanistically, transcriptome analysis on tumour-promoting CAFs revealed that silver-based nanomaterials trigger expressional changes in genes related to cancer invasion and tumour metastasis., Conclusions: Here we report that metal nanoparticles can influence the cancer-promoting activity of tumour stroma by affecting the gene expressional and secretory profiles of stromal fibroblasts and thereby altering their intrinsic crosstalk with malignant cells. This potential of metal nanomaterials should be exploited in multimodal treatment approaches and translated into improved therapeutic outcomes.

Background: Development of multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major burden of successful chemotherapy, therefore, novel approaches to defeat MDR are imperative. Although the remarkable anti-cancer propensity of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) has been demonstrated and their potential application in MDR cancer has been proposed, the nanoparticle size-dependent cellular events directing P-glycoprotein (Pgp) expression and activity in MDR cancer have never been addressed. Hence, in the present study we examined AgNP size-dependent cellular features in multidrug resistant breast cancer cells., Results: In this study we report that 75 nm AgNPs inhibited significantly Pgp efflux activity in drug-resistant breast cancer cells and potentiated the apoptotic effect of doxorubicin, which features were not observed upon 5 nm AgNP treatment. Although both sized AgNPs induced significant ROS production and mitochondrial damage, 5 nm AgNPs were more potent than 75 nm AgNPs in this respect, therefore, these effects can not to be accounted for the reduced transport activity of ATP-driven pumps observed after 75 nm AgNP treatments. Instead we found that 75 nm AgNPs depleted endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium stores, caused notable ER stress and decreased plasma membrane positioning of Pgp., Conclusion: Our study suggests that AgNPs are potent inhibitors of Pgp function and are promising agents for sensitizing multidrug resistant breast cancers to anticancer drugs. This potency is determined by their size, since 75 nm AgNPs are more efficient than smaller counterparts. This is a highly relevant finding as it renders AgNPs attractive candidates in rational design of therapeutically useful agents for tumor targeting. In the present study we provide evidence that exploitation of ER stress can be a propitious target in defeating multidrug resistance in cancers.

Purpose: The biomedical applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are heavily investigated due to their cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties. However, the scientific literature is lacking in data on the aggregation behavior of nanoparticles, especially regarding its impact on biological activity. Therefore, to assess the potential of AgNPs in therapeutic applications, two different AgNP samples were compared under biorelevant conditions., Methods: Citrate-capped nanosilver was produced by classical chemical reduction and stabilization with sodium citrate (AgNP@C), while green tea extract was used to produce silver nanoparticles in a green synthesis approach (AgNP@GTs). Particle size, morphology, and crystallinity were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. To observe the effects of the most important biorelevant conditions on AgNP colloidal stability, aggregation grade measurements were carried out using UV-Vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scatterig, while MTT assay and a microdilution method were performed to evaluate the effects of aggregation on cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity in a time-dependent manner., Results: The aggregation behavior of AgNPs is mostly affected by pH and electrolyte concentration, while the presence of biomolecules can improve particle stability due to the biomolecular corona effect. We demonstrated that high aggregation grade in both AgNP samples attenuated their toxic effect toward living cells. However, AgNP@GT proved less prone to aggregation thus retained a degree of its toxicity., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first systematic examination regarding AgNP aggregation behavior with simultaneous measurements of its effect on biological activity. We showed that nanoparticle behavior in complex systems can be estimated by simple compounds like sodium chloride and glutamine. Electrostatic stabilization might not be suitable for biomedical AgNP applications, while green synthesis approaches could offer new frontiers to preserve nanoparticle toxicity by enhancing colloidal stability. In this comment we show that the accuracy of a recent nano-QSAR model for toxicity predictions of metal oxide nanoparticles towards bacteria E. coli can be greatly improved. On one hand, the experimental ionization energies of metal atoms could be substituted for the erroneous semi-empirically derived heat of formation values of metal ions as descriptors to construct a more reliable nano-QSAR model based on weighted linear least-squares fittings. On the other hand, if no experimental data is available, a model relying on ionization energy descriptors from quantum chemical calculations could also be used producing exactly the same toxicity values as the experimental model.

Alternative methods, including green synthetic approaches for the preparation of various types of nanoparticles are important to maintain sustainable development. Extracellular or intracellular extracts of fungi are perfect candidates for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles due to the scalability and cost efficiency of fungal growth even on industrial scale. There are several methods and techniques that use fungi-originated fractions for synthesis of gold nanoparticles. However, there is less knowledge about the drawbacks and limitations of these techniques. Additionally, identification of components that play key roles in the synthesis is challenging. Here we show and compare the results of three different approaches for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles using either the extracellular fraction, the autolysate of the fungi or the intracellular fraction of 29 thermophilic fungi. We observed the formation of nanoparticles with different sizes (ranging between 6 nm and 40 nm) and size distributions (with standard deviations ranging between 30% and 70%) depending on the fungi strain and experimental conditions. We found by using ultracentrifugal filtration technique that the size of reducing agents is less than 3 kDa and the size of molecules that can efficiently stabilize nanoparticles is greater than 3 kDa.

Background: Epidemiologic observations indicate that the number of systemic fungal infections has increased significantly during the past decades, however in human mycosis, mainly cutaneous infections predominate, generating major public health concerns and providing much of the impetus for current attempts to develop novel and efficient agents against cutaneous mycosis causing species. Innovative, environmentally benign and economic nanotechnology-based approaches have recently emerged utilizing principally biological sources to produce nano-sized structures with unique antimicrobial properties. In line with this, our aim was to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by biological synthesis and to study the effect of the obtained nanoparticles on cutaneous mycosis causing fungi and on human keratinocytes., Methods: Cell-free extract of the red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma proved to be suitable for nanoparticle preparation and the generated AgNPs and AuNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X-ray powder diffraction., Results: Antifungal studies demonstrated that the biosynthesized silver particles were able to inhibit the growth of several opportunistic Candida or Cryptococcus species and were highly potent against filamentous Microsporum and Trichophyton dermatophytes. Among the tested species only Cryptococcus neoformans was susceptible to both AgNPs and AuNPs. Neither AgNPs nor AuNPs exerted toxicity on human keratinocytes., Conclusion: Our results emphasize the therapeutic potential of such biosynthesized nanoparticles, since their biocompatibility to skin cells and their outstanding antifungal performance can be exploited for topical treatment and prophylaxis of superficial cutaneous mycosis., Competing Interests: Disclosure The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Due to obvious disadvantages of the classical chemical methods, green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Numerous environmentally benign synthesis methods have been developed yielding nanoparticles via low-cost, eco-friendly, and simple approaches. In this study, our aim was to determine the suitability of coffee and green tea extracts in green synthesis of silver nanoparticles as well as to compare the performance of the obtained materials in different biological systems. We successfully produced silver nanoparticles (C-AgNP and GT-AgNP) using coffee and green tea extracts; moreover, based on our comprehensive screening, we delineated major differences in the biological activity of C-AgNPs and GT-AgNPs. Our results indicate that although GT-AgNPs exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against all the examined microbial pathogens, these particles were also highly toxic to mammalian cells, which limits their potential applications. On the contrary, C-AgNPs manifested substantial inhibitory action on the tested microbes but were nontoxic to human and mouse cells, indicating an outstanding capacity to discriminate between potential pathogens and mammalian cells. These results clearly show that the various green materials used for stabilization and for reduction of metal ions have a defining role in determining and fine-tuning the biological activity of the obtained nanoparticles., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are considered as novel therapeutic agents inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptotic cell death in various cancer cells. Inhibition of deacetylase activity results in a relaxed chromatin structure thereby rendering the genetic material more vulnerable to DNA targeting agents that could be exploited by combinational cancer therapy. The unique potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in tumor therapy relies on the generation of reactive radicals which trigger oxidative stress, DNA damage and apoptosis in cancer cells. The revolutionary application of AgNPs as chemotherapeutical drugs seems very promising, nevertheless the exact molecular mechanisms of AgNP action in combination with other anti-cancer agents have yet to be elucidated in details before clinical administrations. As a step towards this we investigated the combinational effect of HDAC inhibition and AgNP administration in HeLa cervical cancer cells. We identified synergistic inhibition of cancer cell growth and migration upon combinational treatments. Here we report that the HDAC inhibitor Trichostatin A enhances the DNA targeting capacity and apoptosis inducing efficacy of AgNPs most probably due to its effect on chromatin condensation. One-dimensional titanate nanotubes (TiONTs) were subjected to systematic ion exchange to determine the impact of these modifications on biological activities. Ion exchanged TiONTs (with Ag, Mg, Bi, Sb, Ca, K, Sr, Fe, and Cu ions) were successfully synthesized and the presence of the substituted ions was verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A complex screening was carried out to reveal differences in toxicity to human cells, as well as in antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities between the various modified nanotubes. Our results demonstrated that Ag ion exchanged TiONTs exerted potent antibacterial and antifungal effects against all examined microbial species but were ineffective on viruses. Surprisingly, the antibacterial activity of Cu/TiONTs was restricted to Micrococcus luteus. Most ion exchanged TiONTs did not show antimicrobial activity against the tested bacterial and fungal species. Incorporation of various ions into nanotube architectures lead to mild, moderate, or even to a massive loss of human cell viability; therefore, this type of biological effect exerted by TiONTs can be greatly modulated by ion exchange. The emergence of multidrug resistant (MDR) cancer phenotypes dramatically attenuates the efficiency of antineoplastic drug treatments often leading to the failure of chemotherapy. Therefore there is an urgent need to engineer new therapeutically useful agents and propose innovative approaches able to defeat resistant cancer cells. Although the remarkable anti-cancer features of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have already been delineated their impact on MDR cancer has never been investigated. Herein, we report that AgNPs have notable anti-proliferative effect and induce apoptosis mediated cell death both in drug sensitive and in MDR cancer cells. Furthermore we show evidence that AgNPs exert an inhibitory action on the efflux activity of MDR cancer cells which feature could be exploited to enhance drug accumulation. We verified synergistic interactions of AgNPs with six different antineoplastic agents on drug resistant cells which emphasizes the excellent potential of AgNPs as combinational partners in the chemotherapy of MDR cancer., From the Clinical Editor: The treatment of cancer often fails due to the development of multidrug resistant (MDR) cancer cells. Cadmium (Cd) is a metal used in various industrial applications, thereby causing exposure to Cd-containing fumes. The submicron-sized particles in the fumes represent an extra risk due to their high mobility within the organism and high surface area. Toxicity of Cd on the liver, kidney and bones is well known, but there are less data on its neurotoxicity. Here, male Wistar rats were treated for 3 and 6 weeks by intratracheal instillation of cadmium oxide nanosuspension. The body weight gain in treated rats was significantly decreased, and in the rats treated with high dose (0.4 mg/kg Cd daily), there was a significant increase in the weight of lungs and thymus. In this group, the spectrum of spontaneous cortical electrical activity was shifted to higher frequencies, the latency of sensory-evoked potentials was lengthened, and the frequency following ability of the somatosensory evoked potential was impaired--even without detectable Cd deposition in the brain. The data support the role of the nano-sized Cd in the causation of nervous system damage and show the possibility of modeling human neurotoxic damage in rats.

Cadmium, a toxic heavy metal with various applications in technology, can affect people both by environmental (foodborne) and occupational (inhalation) exposure and can cause nervous system damage. To model this, rats were subacutely treated either with CdCl(2) solution per os (3.0 mg kg(-1) b.w.) or nanoparticulate CdO(2) (particle size ca 65 nm) by intratracheal instillation (0.04 mg kg(-1) b.w.) alone or in sequential combination. Nervous system effects were observed at different levels of function (open field behavior, cortical electrical activity, nerve action potential) and some general toxicological indicators were also measured. Three weeks of oral plus one week of intratracheal exposure caused significant reduction of body weight gain and open field motility. Lengthening of latency of sensory evoked potentials, observed in all treated rats, was also the most significant in the group receiving oral plus intratracheal treatment. Conduction velocity of the tail nerve was likewise decreased in all treated groups. Several of the effects pointed to a potentiating interaction between the two forms of Cd. Modeling environmental and occupational Cd exposure by oral and intratracheal application in rats was feasible, with results suggesting serious negative health effects in humans suffering such a combined exposure., (Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

We report the synthesis of N-doped TiO(2) nanofibers and high photocatalytic efficiency in generating hydrogen from ethanol-water mixtures under UV-A and UV-B irradiation. Titanate nanofibers synthesized by hydrothermal method are annealed in air and/or ammonia to achieve N-doped anatase fibers. Depending on the synthesis route, either interstitial N atoms or new N-Ti bonds appear in the lattice, resulting in slight lattice expansion as shown by XPS and HR-TEM analysis, respectively. These nanofibers were then used as support for Pd and Pt nanoparticles deposited with wet impregnation followed by calcination and reduction. In the hydrogen generation tests, the N-doped samples were clearly outperforming their undoped counterparts, showing remarkable efficiency not only under UV-B but also with UV-A illumination. When 100 mg of catalyst (N-doped TiO(2) nanofiber decorated with Pt nanoparticles) was applied to 1 L of water-ethanol mixture, the H(2) evolution rates were as high as 700 μmol/h (UV-A) and 2250 μmol/h (UV-B) corresponding to photo energy conversion percentages of ∼3.6 and ∼12.3%, respectively.

Context and Objective: Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal harmful for human health and environment. From leaded gasoline (still used in certain countries), and in Pb processing and reprocessing industries, airborne particles are emitted which can be inhaled. In such exposure, the size of particles entering the airways is crucial. The nervous system is a primary target for Pb, and consequences like occupational neuropathy and delayed mental development of children are well-known. The aim of this work was to investigate the neurotoxicity of Pb nanoparticles (NPs) applied into the airways of rats., Methods: Nano-sized lead oxide particles (mean diameter ca. 20 nm) were suspended in distilled water and instilled into the trachea of adult male Wistar rats (in doses equivalent to 2 and 4 mg/kg Pb), 5 times a week for 3 and 6 weeks. At the end, open field motility was tested, then central and peripheral nervous activity was recorded in urethane anesthesia., Results and Conclusion: The treated rats' body weight gain was significantly lower than that of the controls from the 3rd week onwards, and the weight of their lungs was significantly increased. Horizontal motility increased while vertical motility decreased. Spontaneous cortical activity was shifted to higher frequencies. The somatosensory cortical evoked potential showed increased latency and decreased frequency-following ability, and similar alterations were seen in the tail nerve. Significant Pb deposition was measured in blood, brain, lung and liver samples of the treated rats. The experiments performed seem to constitute an adequate model of the human effects of inhaled Pb NPs.

The toxicity of manganese-containing airborne particles is an important occupational and environmental problem. In this work, adult male Wistar rats were treated with a nanosuspension of MnO(2) of approximately 23 nm nominal particle diameter, instilled into the trachea for 3, 6, and 9 wk in doses of 2.63 and 5.26 mg Mn/kg. The animals' body weight was checked weekly. At the end of treatment, the rats' spontaneous motility was tested in an open field box. Then, spontaneous and stimulus-evoked cortical activity and action potential of the tail nerve were recorded in urethane anesthesia. The rats were finally dissected, organs weights were measured, and the presence of excess Mn in lung and brain samples was determined using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. While control rats had normal weight gain, the body weights of the treated rats ceased to grow from wk 6 on. The relative weight of the lungs increased in the treated rats, and that of the liver decreased, in a dose- and time-dependent manner; Mn was detected in their lung and brain samples. In the open field activity, the percentage of ambulation and rearing decreased while local activity and immobility increased. The latency of the evoked potentials was lengthened, and the conduction velocity of the tail nerve decreased. These results indicate that the Mn content of instilled nanoparticles had access from the airways to the brain, and the resulting damage could be investigated in animals using neuro-functional and general toxicological endpoints.

Due to the widespread applications of metal nanoparticles (NPs), green synthesis strategies have recently advanced, e.g., methods that utilize extracts made from different plant wastes. A particularly innovative approach to reducing large amounts of available household/agricultural green wastes is their application in nanoparticle generation. Regarding this, the aim of our work was to examine the possibility of upgrading green nanoparticle syntheses from an innovative economic and environmental point of view, namely by investigating the multiple recyclabilities of green tea (GT), coffee arabica (CA), and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) (VC) waste residues for iron nanoparticle (FeNPs) synthesis. The plant extracts obtained by each extraction round were analyzed individually to determine the amount of main components anticipated to be involved in NPs synthesis. The synthesized FeNPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The activity of the generated FeNPs in degrading chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC) and thus their future applicability for remediation purposes were also assessed. We have found that VC and especially GT residues could be reutilized in multiple extraction rounds; however, only the first extract of CA was suitable for FeNPs' generation. All of the obtained FeNPs could degrade VOC with efficiencies GT1-Fe 91.0%, GT2-Fe 83.2%, GT3-Fe 68.5%; CA1-Fe 76.2%; VC1-Fe 88.2%, VC2-Fe 79.7%, respectively, where the number (as in GT3) marked the extraction round. These results indicate that the adequately selected green waste material can be reutilized in multiple rounds for nanoparticle synthesis, thus offering a clean, sustainable, straightforward alternative to chemical methods. Heterogeneous catalysis is a chemical process achieved at solid–gas or solid–liquid interfaces. Many factors including the particle size, shape and metal-support interfaces can have significant influences on the catalytic properties of metal catalysts. The recent progress in the synthesis techniques and advanced characterization tools allow to understand the catalytic mechanisms at molecular level. In this Review, the size and shape dependent catalytic chemistry of metal nanoparticles and their electronic properties will be discussed. Then the unique catalytic chemistry at the metal-support interfaces will be discussed in details. Furthermore, the challenges of bimetallic nanoparticle catalytic chemistry will be discussed. The activation and conversion of CO 2 can be achieved on multifunctional catalytic sites at the metal/oxide interface by taking advantage of the synergy between noble metal nanoparticles and supports. Herein, sequential deposition of noble metals (Ru, Rh, and Pt) and nanodiamonds (NDs) was carried out on the surface of strontium titanates (STO). The noble metals and NDs were deposited in either 1 wt% or 10 wt%. The samples were characterized with in-situ as well as ex-situ spectroscopic and microscopic techniques and tested towards photocatalytic CO 2 hydrogenation. The sequential deposition of the noble metals and NDs enhanced light absorption properties, which also led to higher photocatalytic activity. The STO-ND-Ru sample had the highest photocatalytic CO 2 hydrogenation efficiency (47.5%) and showed improved selectivity for CH 4 (14.5%). Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies showed that the hydrogenation of CO 2 to CO and CH 4 followed different mechanisms for pristine STO and STO-ND-Ru. Titanate nanostructures are of great interest for catalytic applications because their high surface area and cation exchange capacity create the possibility to achieve high metal dispersion. Ion exchange allows titanate nanostructures to incorporate metal adatoms in their framework. Consequently, the curved layers contain a large amount of defect sites, typically oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ centers, which can make them promising photocatalysts, because the defect sites can trap photoelectrons or holes extending the lifetime of the excited state. Due to the large amount of defects, titanate nanotubes (TNT) can stabilize sub-nanosized gold clusters, presumably in Au25 form. This perspective summarizes the previous results obtained in the photocatalytic transformation of methane in which the size of gold nanoclusters plays an important role. Photocatalytic measurements revealed that methane is active towards photo-oxidation. Methane transforms mainly into hydrogen and, to a lesser extent, to ethane and ethanol. Based on recent additional results, we stress here that gold clusters (Au25) may be directly involved in the photo-induced reactions, namely in the direct activation of the methane/Au25δ+ complex during irradiation. Another new finding is that gold nanoparticles supported on TNT exhibit high catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation. Our results revealed fundamental differences in the reaction schemes as the products of the two routes are CO (thermal process) and CH4 (photocatalytic route), indicating the importance of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in the reaction. The presence of gold nanoparticles on the surface has been found to have multiple roles. On the one hand, gold in nano and sub-nano sizes promotes the adsorption and scission of reactants, important for both types of reactions. On the other hand, the gold-support interface forms a rectifying Schottky contact that helps in the separation of photogenerated carriers, thus improving the utilization of electrons and holes in the reduction and oxidation steps, respectively. Furthermore, gold ions (Au+), in the cationic sites of the titanate lattice promote the photocatalytic transformation of formate (which is one of the intermediates), thus advancing the reaction further towards the fully reduced product. The explored reaction schemes may pave the road towards novel catalytic materials that can solve challenges associated with the activation of CH4 and CO2 and thus contribute to green chemistry. In this study, a set of nitrogen-doped TiO-based nanomaterials demonstrating photocatalytic activity was developed by combining the efforts of lattice doping and metal nanoparticle decoration and tested for photo-degradation of methylene blue dye by applying solar simulator irradiation. The surface potential shifts of these TiO-based photocatalytic nanomaterials measured by Kelvin probe force microscope have been used to study the degree of electron generation of the photocatalysts after irradiation and were well correlated with the photocatalytic activity. The nitrogen-doped TiO nanowires decorated with Pt nanoparticles can induce obvious electron accumulation and result in a large shift of surface potential. The analysis shows a clear correlation between the surface potential shift and the photodegradation activity. Furthermore, a thorough comparative photocatalytic activity study combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the materials-doped with nitrogen under various conditions-reveals that the photocatalytic efficiency of the catalysts is maintained even if the lattice doping is leached e.g., by thermal treatments after doping. In the experimental work leading to this contribution, the parameters of the ultrasound treatment (temperature, output power, emission periodicity) were varied to learn about the effects of the sonication on the crystallization of Ni nanoparticles during the hydrazine reduction technique. The solids were studied in detail by X-ray diffractometry, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetry, specific surface area, pore size analysis, temperature-programmed CO2/NH3 desorption and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the thermal behaviour, specific surface area, total pore volume and the acid-base character of the solids were mainly determined by the amount of the nickel hydroxide residues. The highest total acidity was recorded over the solid under low-power (30 W) continuous ultrasonic treatment. The catalytic behaviour of the nanoparticles was tested in a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction over five samples prepared in the conventional as well as the ultrasonic ways. The ultrasonically prepared catalysts usually performed better, and the highest catalytic activity was measured over the nanoparticles prepared under low-power (30 W) continuous sonication. Fossil fuel depletion, global warming, climate change, and steep hikes in the price of fuel are driving scientists to investigate commercial and environmentally friendly energy carriers like hydrogen. Steam methane reforming (SMR), a current commercial route for H 2 production, has been considered the best remedy to fulfill the requirements. Despite the remarkable quantity of H 2 produced by the SMR, this technology still faces major challenges such as catalyst deactivation due to the sintering of metal nanoparticles, coking, and generation of a large quantity of CO 2. Firstly, the effects of catalyst types, kinetic models, and operating conditions on high-yield H 2 production, the evolution path from gray to blue, via the conventional SMR are comprehensively reviewed. Secondly, exploiting intensified techniques such as membrane technology, sorption, fluidization, and chemical looping for SMR to blue H 2 are discussed in detail. Further, a novel and sustainable path for the SMR process, hybridizing the use of novel materials and emerging technologies to produce turquoise H 2 , is proposed. Finally, the critical points for steam reforming process technology that can help leverage environmental, social, and governance (ESG) profiling have been discussed. Titanates are salts of polytitanic acid that can be synthesized as nanostructures in a great variety concerning crystallinity, morphology, size, metal content and surface chemistry. Titanate nanotubes (open-ended hollow cylinders measuring up to 200 nm in length and 15 nm in outer diameter) and nanowires (solid, elongated rectangular blocks with length up to 1500 nm and 30–60 nm diameter) are the most widespread representatives of the titanate nanomaterial family. This review covers the properties and applications of these two materials from the surface science point of view. Dielectric, vibrational, electron and X-ray spectroscopic results are comprehensively discussed first, then surface modification methods including covalent functionalization, ion exchange and metal loading are covered. The versatile surface chemistry of one-dimensional titanates renders them excellent candidates for heterogeneous catalytic, photocatalytic, photovoltaic and energy storage applications, therefore, these fields are also reviewed. Abstract: Tungsten-trioxide nanowire bundles were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method. Sodium-tungstate was used as precursor and sodium-sulfate as structure directing agent. All the reflections of the X-ray diffractogram of the synthesized wires belong to the hexagonal phase of the tungsten trioxide. The nanowires were successfully decorated with metal nanoparticles by wet impregnation. The TEM investigation showed that using different metal precursors resulted in different particle sizes and coverage on the surface. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Gold increased the stability of ethanol molecules on h-BN covered Rh(111) and was active in the dehydrogenation process. • The active sites of gold clusters on h-BN are very likely the edge and corner atoms on the interface of gold/BN nanomesh. • Au/BN serves a good product selectivity in the ethanol dissociation process producing carbon free hydrogen and acetaldehyde. Controlled shape and size distribution of metal nanoparticles for surface catalytic reactions are important. Through deposition onto the periodic surface of h-BN we can adjust these parameters of gold thereby we are able to influence the catalytic activity of the nanoparticles. In this study we investigated the decomposition of ethanol on gold nanoparticles supported on h-BN/Rh(111). High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) methods have been used on the experimental side. Ethanol showed enhanced stability on Au/h-BN/Rh(111) system. The stabilization effect increases with gold coverage and saturates before gold reaches a continuous adlayer. High selectivity was observed towards "CO free" hydrogen, a small part of ethanol dissociated to hydrogen and acetaldehyde without further decomposition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations delivered important information about the adsorption characteristics of ethanol and hydrogen on model Au/h-BN/Rh(111).
