Assessments of the soil environmental quality of farmland and pollution source apportionment are the foundation for ensuring national food security and agricultural sustainable development, as well as an important prerequisite for the pursuit to keep our lands clean. This study evaluated the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils in the Yellow River Basin from 2000 to 2023, based on the data of heavy metal contents including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, using the geo-accumulation index method. Source apportionment was conducted by employing a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The probabilistic health risks were evaluated by coupling Monte Carlo simulation with a human health risk assessment model, and priority pollution sources and elements were identified. The results showed that:① the average content of all heavy metals in farmland soils within the study area was lower than the screening values specified in the soil environment quality risk control standard for soil contamination of agriculture land (GB 15618-2018) (pH>7.5). However, the contents of Cd, As, and Zn in the samples exceeded their screening values, with percentages of 21.69%, 5.56%, and 1.23%, respectively, with Cd having the highest rate of exceedance. ② Hg and Cd were moderately polluted, Cu and Pb were slightly polluted, and the other elements were not polluted. ③ The main sources of heavy metals in farmland soil were traffic-industrial sources, natural-agricultural sources, industrial-natural sources, and agricultural-industrial sources, with contribution rates of 37.04%, 26.69%, 21.72%, and 14.55%, respectively. ④ Heavy metals in farmland soil posed carcinogenic health risks to adults and children but did not have non-carcinogenic risks; As and Cd were priority control elements for human health risks, and industrial-natural sources and agricultural-industrial sources were priority control sources in the study area.

In this paper, the Cu and Ni accumulation and contamination levels in agricultural soils and wheat around a smelter in Jinchang City in northwest China were investigated with a combination of field investigations and indoor analytical tests, using a soil-wheat system as the study area. The average Cu and Ni contents in the soil were 119.50 mg kg-1 and 123.40 mg kg-1, respectively, both of which exceeded the local soil background values. The Cu and Ni contents in 46.15% o and 26.92% of sampling sites, respectively, exceeded the screening values for soil contamination risk in agricultural land in China. The average Cu content in different parts of wheat was in the order of roots (24.22 mg kg-1) > leaves (20.11 mg kg-1) > husks (5.51 mg kg-1) > grains (4.05 mg kg-1) > stalks (3.74 mg kg-1). Furthermore, the average Ni content ranked as leaves (24.64 mg kg-1) > roots (21.12 mg kg-1) > husks (6.95 mg kg-1) > stalks (1.75 mg kg-1) > grains (0.38 mg kg-1). The health risk evaluation showed that with average hazard index values of 0.88 for adults and 1.04 for children for Cu and Ni in wheat grain, wheat in this region is unlikely to pose a health risk to adults but may pose a lesser health risk to children. The Ni bio-concentration and translocation factors in the husk and leaves of wheat were greater than those of Cu and smaller than those of Cu in the other parts of wheat. Identifying the contamination and sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in road-dust sediment (RDS) and the surrounding greenspace soil of urban environments and understanding their ecological-health risks are important for pollution management and public health. The contamination characteristics, ecological and probabilistic health risks, and source apportionment of eight PTEs (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, As, Zn, and Hg) in the Yellow River Custom Tourist Line of Lanzhou, which is the largest open urban riverfront scenic park in China, were investigated. The results showed that all the RDS PTE mean concentrations exceeded their soil background values, whereas for the surrounding greenspace soils, the concentrations of the PTEs, except for Cr and Ni, were also higher than their local background levels. Moreover, the RDS-soil system was mainly contaminated by Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, and Hg to varying degrees, and the integrated ecological risks of PTEs in the RDS and soil were high and considerable at most sites, respectively. The probabilistic health risk assessment results demonstrated that the non-carcinogenic hazard risk for humans was negligible, but the total carcinogenic risks should be considered. Source apportionment using a positive matrix factorization model combined with multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Cr, Ni, and As in the RDS-soil system were from natural and industrial sources, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu came from vehicle emissions and pesticide and fertilizer applications, and Hg was from natural and industrial sources and utilization of pesticides with fertilizers. Two strains of Fe/Mn oxidizing bacteria tolerant to high concentrations of multiple heavy metal(loid)s and efficient decontamination for them were screened. The surface of the bio-Fe/Mn oxides produced by the oxidation of Fe(II) and Mn(II) by Pseudomonas taiwanensis (marked as P4) and Pseudomonas plecoglossicida (marked as G1) contains rich reactive oxygen functional groups, which play critical roles in the removal efficiency and immobilization of heavy metal(loid)s in co-contamination system. The isolated strains P4 and G1 can grow well in the following environments: pH 5-9, NaCl 0-4%, and temperature 20-30°C. The removal efficiencies of Fe, Pb, As, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Mn are effective after inoculation of the strains P4 and G1 in the simulated water system (the initial concentrations of heavy metal(loid) were 1 mg/L), approximately reaching 96%, 92%, 85%, 67%, 70%, 54% and 15%, respectively. The exchangeable and carbonate bound As, Cd, Pb and Cu are more inclined to convert to the Fe-Mn oxide bound fractions in P4 and G1 treated soil, thereby reducing the phytoavailability and bioaccessible of heavy metal(loid)s. In order to investigate the contamination levels of dust and its surrounding green land soil heavy metal pollution and potential ecological and health risks in the scenic areas of urban waterfront parks, the gardens, squares, and theme parks of the Yellow River Custom Tourist Line in Lanzhou were selected as the research area, using 27 dust samples and 26 soil samples from its surrounding green lands. The contamination characteristics and potential ecological risks of eight heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were evaluated using the geo-accumulation index ( I geo ), single-factor pollution index ( P i ), Nemerow integrated pollution index ( P N ), and improved potential ecological risk index (RI). The human health risk assessment was also evaluated using the exposure risk model. The results showed that the average concentrations of the other heavy metals in the surface dusts were higher than the background values of Gansu Province and Lanzhou City, except that the As mean concentrations in the surface dusts and the surrounding green land soils were slightly lower than the Gansu Province background values. For its surrounding green land soils, the mean concentrations of the other heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb) exceeded the soil background values of Gansu Province and Lanzhou City, whereas the Cr and Ni mean concentrations were lower than their corresponding soil background values of Gansu Province and Lanzhou City. The geo-accumulation and single-factor pollution indices demonstrated that a slight to moderate pollution of Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb occurred in surface dusts, and Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb appeared in varying degrees of contamination levels in its surrounding green land soils. The Nemerow integrated pollution index analysis manifested that the overall contamination status of the study areas was between slightly and heavily polluted. The potential ecological risk index suggested that Cd and Hg were recognized as significant pollutant elements and that the RI of the other heavy metals were all below 40, presenting slight ecological risk. The health risk assessment indicated that ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway for heavy metals from the surface dusts and the surrounding green land soils, and no carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks posed threats to adults and children.

The environmental quality of remote alpine ecosystem has been drawn increasing attention owing to the increasingly severe atmospheric pollution. This study investigated the composition and sources of elements in the soil and moss collected from a pristine spruce forest in the Qilian Mountains, Northwest China. The order of mean concentrations of elements investigated in soil was Fe > K > Na > Mg > Ca > Mn > Cr > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu > As > Cd > Hg, and that of moss was Ca > Fe > Mg > K > Na > Mn > Cr > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cu > As > Cd > Hg. The concentrations of trace metals (except for As) in soil were greater than the soil background values, with Pb contamination more serious than the other elements. The Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) values indicated that the soils were heavily polluted by Pb, Cd and Ni. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) suggested that the soils were at moderate risk. In particular, Hg and Cd were the most critically potential factors for ecological risk. According to the bioaccumulation factors (BAF), the accumulated concentrations of Ca, Hg, Cd, Pb, Ni, Mg, Cr and Zn in moss were higher than those in soil. By performing the multivariate analyses, natural sources (airborne soil particles) were identified to be the major contributors for all elements, whereas anthropogenic sources also contributed to the accumulations of Pb and Cd in the soil and moss in this region., (© 2021. Considerable studies have been done on heavy metal removing from aqueous solutions using loess. However, application of loess to heavy metal contaminated sediment is limited. The present study was to determine the effectiveness of loess to immobilize Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in sediment. The loess was incubated with 10 kg wet sediment in doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kg for 70 d and then subjected to the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). The possible mechanisms for heavy metal immobilization were illustrated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Results from TCLP confirmed loess reduced leaching rate of Cu and Zn achieving up to 42.4% and 17.6% reductions, respectively, when compared with untreated sediment. The loess could significantly immobilize Cu and Zn in sediment, and the optimum dose of loess in 10 kg wet sediment was 5 kg. However, loess was inefficient for Cd and Pb immobilization. Correlation analysis showed that TCLP extraction method could be used to predict the toxicity of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the loess-amended sediment. Untreated industrial sewage and domestic wastewater irrigation has led to agricultural soil-crop system contamination by heavy metals and fluoride in Dongdagou and Xidagou stream basins, Baiyin city, China. A total of 36 pairs of soil and wheat samples (roots, stalks, leaves, husks, and grains) and 42 pairs of soil and maize samples (roots, stalk1, stalk2, stalk3, leaves, husks, corncobs and grains) were collected from Dongdagou and Xidagou stream basins to examine the accumulation, fractionation, correlation of heavy metals and F in soil-crop systems. Risks posed by heavy metals and F in this system to human health was also assessed. The total contents of F and heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn Zn, Cr and Ni), as well as the fraction distribution in soil, were determined. The total contents of F and heavy metals in crop tissues were also determined. The results indicated that the average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn Zn, F and Cr in Dongdagou and Xidagou stream basins exceeded the soil background value. Heavy metals and F more easily accumulated in the male inflorescence of maize. Correlation analysis showed that content of water soluble F positively were correlated with the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn Zn, Cr and Ni in exchangeable and carbonate fractions (P < 0.05). Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that the combined stresses of soil total Cu and Ni accounts for 100% effect on water soluble F accumulation in soil and crop roots. The in situ immobilization of metal-contaminated sediment, using various amendments, has attracted great attention owing to their cost-effectiveness. The present study investigated the effectiveness of Chinese loess on Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb stabilization by decreasing their bioavailability in contaminated sediment. The loess was mixed with the sediment in doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kg. Approximately 70 d after loess application, the effectiveness was evaluated using the Tessier sequential extraction procedure and single extractants, including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). The results indicated that the loess can effectively transform Cu from the carbonate fraction into the residual fraction when the loess dose was ≥5 kg. However, loess had little effect on Zn, Cd and Pb immobilization. Correlation analysis showed that these four extractants can provide a good indication of the toxicity of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the amended sediment. Additionally, the organic matter content in the amended sediment decreased by 1.4% for CK, 1.6% for L0.5, 1.7% for L1, 1.5% for L2, 1.5% for L5, 1.9% for L10 and 1.9% for L20 (CK: untreated sediment; L0.5 to L20 represent loess doses of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kg, respectively) compared to the initial organic matter content in the unamended sediment, which may increase the atmospheric carbon dioxide owing to the degradation of organic matter., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. The speciation distribution and potential environmental risk of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr in sediments in suburban outfall of industrial oasis region, Baiyin City were studied by Tessier sequential extraction method, correlation analysis, enrichment factor (EF) and risk assessment code (RAC). The results indicated that, the average concentration of heavy metals in sediments samples of Dongdagou and Xidagou streams exceeded the background levels in Gansu Province, with Cr, as an exception. The enrichment factor suggested that the enrichment of Cd in sediments of Dongdagou and Xidagou streams were very serious, which posed a strong pollution level. Furthermore, the analysis of chemical speciation indicated that Zn, Ni, and Cr in sediments of Dongdagou stream were mainly dominated by the fraction of residual, the existence of Cu and Cd was mainly in organic forms, while Pb was composed mostly by its Fe-Mn oxides fraction; Pb in sediments of Xidagou stream existed by Fe-Mn oxides fraction, other metals mainly appeared with the residual fraction. The risk assessment code (RAC) showed that the risk level of heavy metals in sediments of Dongdagou stream descended in the order: Ni > Cd > Pb > Cu > Zn > Cr, Ni posed a highest risk level. The risk level of heavy metals in sediments of Xidagou stream decreased in the order: Pb > Cd > Ni > Cu > Zn > Cr, Cd, Pb and Ni posed a highest risk level.
