A cross-transplantation field experiment was performed to investigate about possible adaptation/acclimatization to metal pollution in common garden snail Cantareus aspersus (ex-Helix aspersa) and brown-lipped grove snail Cepaea nemoralis populations. Adults were collected from an area surrounding a former smelter (ME), highly polluted by trace metals (TMs) for decades, and from an unpolluted site (BE). Subadults of first generation (F1) were exposed in microcosms in a 28-day kinetic study. Four exposure sites were chosen around the smelter along a soil pollution gradient (vegetation and soil otherwise comparable). Bioaccumulation in snail soft tissues globally increased with soil contamination, with Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations reaching 271, 187, 5527 μg g(-1), respectively. Accumulation kinetic patterns were similar between snail species but C. nemoralis showed greater TM levels than C. aspersus. Some inter-population differences were revealed in TM accumulation (bioaccumulation factors, accumulation kinetics) but did not suggest consistent adaptive responses. We did not detect negative effects of TM exposure on snail condition (body weight, shell size, shell weight). ME C. aspersus snails produced heavier shells than BE snails under exposure to TMs at the highest level, suggesting an adaptive response. The protocol used in this study, however, did not allow unambiguously distinguishing whether this response was due to genetic adaptation or to maternal effects. Abnormal but reversible shell development of adult ME C. nemoralis suggested physiological acclimatization. Differences in responses to TMs between populations are observed for conchological parameters, not for bioaccumulation, with different strategies according to the species (acclimatization or adaptation/maternal effects).

We investigated how host factors (species, age, gender) modulated Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu concentrations, metallothionein levels (MTs) and their relationships in 7 sympatric small mammal species along a pollution gradient. Cd concentrations in liver and kidneys increased with age in all species. Age effect on other metals and MTs differs among species. Gender did not influence metal and MT levels except in the bank vole. Three patterns linking internal metal concentrations and MTs were observed along the gradient: a low metal accumulation with a (i) high (wood mouse) or (ii) low (bank vole) level of MTs accompanied by a slight or no increase of MTs with Cd accumulation; (iii) an elevated metal accumulation with a sharp increase of MTs (common and pygmy shrews). In risk assessment and biomonitoring perspectives, we conclude that measurements of MTs and metals might be associated because they cannot be interpreted properly when considered separately., (Copyright (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The transfer of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn was evaluated in a soil-plant (lettuce, Lactuca sativa)-invertebrate (snail, Helix aspersa) food chain during a microcosm experiment. Two agricultural soils, polluted and unpolluted, were studied. Lettuce was cultivated for eight weeks before introduction of snails into the microcosms (M-snails). In a parallel experiment, snails were exposed to lettuce only (i.e., without soil) in simpler exposure devices called containers (C-snails). Snail exposure duration was eight weeks for both M- and C-snails. No effects on snail survival were found. Both M- and C-snails exposed to polluted soil showed a growth reduction, but only after two weeks of exposure. Time-dependent accumulation in M-snails exposed to the polluted environment showed a regular increase of Cd and Zn concentrations over time and a rapid increase of Pb concentrations within the first two weeks, which then remained stable. Copper and Ni concentrations did not increase during any of the experiments. Concentrations in M- and C-snails were compared to estimate the relative contribution of soil and plant to the total bioaccumulation. The results suggest that the soil contribution may be higher than 80% for Pb, from 30 to 60% for Zn, and from 2 to 40% for Cd.

Abstract: Most of the studies focusing on metal transfer from soil to biota ignore the possible non-trophic influence of an organism on pollutant transfer to other species. We hypothesised that an earthworm (Aporrectodea tuberculata) might modify the bioavailability of metals in soil and thus, their transfer to the snail Helix aspersa. Snails were exposed for 2 weeks to a multicontaminated field soil with or without earthworms, under controlled conditions. When exposed with earthworms, snails had higher concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn than when they were exposed alone, while no difference was detected for Pb. For Cd only, the difference in snail bioaccumulation corresponded to an increase in its water-soluble fraction. Internal concentrations of metals in earthworms remained similar in the presence or absence of snails. Two non-exclusive possible mechanisms, including variations in bioavailable fractions and/or total accessible pools of metals, are proposed to explain how earthworms could modulate the transfer of metals from soil to snails. This work demonstrated that metal transfer from soil to one invertebrate species was influenced by another invertebrate. We conclude that the concept of intermediary species, usually used to describe interactions among species, should be extended to the interactions between biota and pollutants in non-biotic compartments. Environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils should ideally be carried out with complementary approaches (chemical and biological) conducted in situ and ex situ. While biological methods based on the assessment of effect and bioaccumulation in bioindicators exist for soil fauna organisms, such as land snails, the methodology is currently limited in the field to 14 metallic elements (MEs). To provide new relevant tools to the stakeholders of polluted fields, the aim of this work is to determine ex situ threshold guide values (ex situ TGVs) , for 15 MEs, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 7 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These ex situ TGVs are the usual concentration of contaminants found in the viscera of the bioindicator Cantareus aspersus after 28 days of exposure to uncontaminated soils. The second objective was to assess and validate the relevance of these ex situ TGVs for the interpretation of contamination levels in various European contaminated soils based on global index calculations: i) The sum of the excess of transfers (SETs) and ii) the weighted SETs based on the general toxicity points of each contaminant used to evaluate the risk of transferred MEs, PAHs and PCBs (ERITMEs, ERITPAHs and ERITPCBs, respectively). In addition, the influence of soil physico-chemical properties on accumulation was modelled to better understand their roles in bioavailability. The presented ex situ TGV and the associated indicators (the global sum of the excess of transfers and global ecotoxicological risk) provide a basis by which stakeholders can prioritize the management of polluted soils depending on the risk they may represent. The determination of ex situ TGVs for organic and inorganic compounds provides new tools to characterize excess contaminant transfers, and it will also allow the use of snails for ERAs, notably for common pollutants, such as PAHs and PCBs for which guide values are not available.
