This article aims to discuss the gaydar as an exercise of power, based on the concept of apparatus by Foucault (2014) and Agamben (2005). I do not suppose that is possible to identify one's sexuality like Rule (2011) e Spulzio et al. (2020) do. On the contrary, I investigate the gaydar as a historical apparatus used to exert power, knowledge. To do so I analyse a commercial of an insurance company named Adam and Eve. Firstly, I relate gaydar to the performative conceptions of gender and sexuality. Secondly, I discuss how linguistic profiling (BAUGH, 2003) and indexicality (SILVERSTEIN, 2003) act as power techniques invested by this device. Finally, I point out how metapragmatics (SIGNORINI, 2008) are relevant to understanding the use of gaydar when analyzing an insurance commercial ending with the presentation of several apparatus for its control. During the 2022 Spring semester at Columbia University, Joana Plaza Pinto attended two graduate courses of the Franz Boas Professor of Anthropology & Gender Studies Elizabeth A. Povinelli, Semiotics 2 and Feminist Theory. Under the influence of these courses, this interview is one of the multiple conversations related to the relationship between gender, intimacy, and language. On semiotic mediation, Povinelli spoke about her connection with Linguistic Anthropology, Psychoanalysis and Peircean Semiotics, the bodily conditions of human and more-thanhuman communication, the subjectivation forces of the metapragmatics of languages, the semiotic conditions of the subject and the land, and the connections of these issues with racist colonialist forms in Liberalism. DIALOGUE , *SPANISH language , *LANGUAGE & languages , *VOCABULARY , *LINGUISTICS - Abstract
In this article, we report the analysis of reconstructed dialogues (DREC) in a sample of the socially-stratified corpus PRESEEACaracas (Bentivoglio & Malaver 2006, 2012; Gallucci, González & Malaver 2013). In this first approach to the use of DREC as a polyphonic instance in Spanish spoken in Caracas, we identified several features in these dialogues: types of quotes, introductory framework, turn-taking configuration, and type of narrator. Moreover, we also examined the potential relationship between DRECs and social variables (i.e., gender, age and level of instruction). Results show i) that DRECs are usually constituted by cases of direct speech without a verb or freestanding quotations (Cameron 1998); ii) that the introductory frame of DRECs tends to be an instance of direct speech headed by a communication verb, iii) that the sequences of the dialogues are organized in pairs of question/answer or assertion /response; iv) that the narrator animates two voices, including their own. Regarding extralinguistic variables, we found that the use of DRECs in our sample was associated with the gender of the speakers and their level of instruction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper analyzes metapragmatic projections about Portuguese in migrant students' narratives in Brazil. Yielded in longitudinal ethnographic research, the narratives focused on the migratory trajectories of coming, reception and permanence and their positions in front of the Portuguese. For this analysis, Povinelli's interpretations of metapragmatics and Ochs's studies on language socialization are central. The analysis points out that the socialization of institutional norms as fundamental in the explicit formulations on the value of Portuguese used by the narrator and the evaluation of the student experience. These metapragmatics guide the interpretation of the linguistic values of what is said, to whom, why and in what circumstances, while the speaking body projects itself and projects its interlocutors in this interpretation. The body is a context-of-occurrence for semiotic resources - the space where conditions are constituted to say certain things and the space that is constituted by the things that are said. This article examines the connections between the present and the past established by Argentine Jews through the performance of verbal art expressions and metapragmatic considerations about them. The work focuses specifically on how certain expressions of the poetics of speech shape group memory. In particular, it deals with one narrative genre according to the utterers' definition and their use of it. Thus, the article shows the ways by means of which through the performance of speech play in informal contexts, the narrators, Argentine born children of Jewish immigrants, establish axes of continuity and discontinuity with different pasts: one experienced by the speakers themselves or their ancestors, another one pertaining to Jewish life in Eastern Europe, and one originated in sacred texts.

The critical tradition around the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega has highlighted the large presence of a metalinguistic reflection in his work. This reflection includes not only grammatical digressions in a traditional sense but also encompasses pragmatic and metapragmatic issues. Taking die Comentarios Reales as an example, particularly the second part, we will see how the Inca pays special attention to the relationship between the linguistic and contextual elements in the communication among the characters of the historical narrative and how it is precisely at this level that he locates many of the problems of intercomprehension between Spaniards and Indians. - Abstract
Humour has a triple nature, psychological, neurological and linguistic. This requires a globalizing approach that, based in a transversal point of view, conceptualizes it as an emotion (psychological), which produces a (neurophysiological) reaction of joy similar to happiness and increased by incongruence produced by the unusual; which, normally, we develop in a (social) environment; and which we produce, mainly, thanks to linguistic resources. These psychological, neurological and linguistic mechanisms allow us, onomasiologically, to carry out the linguistic production required to obtain humour in the receiver; and, semi-asmologically, to activate some physiological mechanisms that make possible the humorous interpretation of the stimulus and, consequently, the cognitive understanding of the humorous sequence. In both approaches, the emotional and social character of humour enables the establishment of a series of expectations that are associated with humour processing in both the productive and understanding aspects. In this article we intend to tackle, from this transversal point of view, those inferential processes appeared after humor comprehension, based in results obtained in Project "Metapragmatics of children's humour: acquisition, gender perspective and applications", in order to know if children's humour is different between boys and girls, the degree of incongruence understanding as an indicator element of humour perception, and if figurativeness process (irony, metaphor, hyperbole) is an indicator element of humour evolution in boys and girls aged between 8 and 12.

ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss discursive practices related to online Bolsonarism, as a manifestation of extreme right-wing digital populism. For this purpose, semiotic-discursive clashes focused on textual trajectories mobilized to signify the historical processes related to the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) are focused. The analyzed interactions were triggered from a post on the official account of President Jair Bolsonaro on Twitter, on March 27, 2019, on the eve of the fifty-five years of the 1964 Coup. Starting from a theoretical and methodological perspective based on textual tracking in digital networks and in pragmatic and semiotic conceptions of the processes of signification, we propose some contingent interpretations about the problems investigated here. They are: the co-optation of significant gaps typical of populist rationality for the establishment of strategic historical negations; the insistent (re) updating of authoritarian, anti-democratic and anti-human rights indexical meanings in the textual trajectories of the online bolsonarist (bolsonarista) discourse; the semiotic-discursive friction in disputes over metapragmatic frameworks between bolsonarist (bolsonarista) discursive agents and their opponents on virtual public spaces.

Idioms constitute one of the most interesting and fascinating linguistic phenomena, the study of which continues to bring new findings from different theoretical and applied perspectives. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive approach to idiom meaning conceived as an eminently pragmatic matter with some idiosyncratic traits (Dobrovol'skij & Piirainen, 2005; Timofeeva-Timofeev, 2012). For this reason, the focus adopted is a metalinguistic reflection (Verschueren, 1999; 2000) on the communicative role of idioms. This general framework leads us to propose a two-level metapragmatic idiom meaning model, whose purpose is to systematically depict the discursive behavior of idioms according to their inherent semantic complexity (cfr. Telija, 1996; Timofeeva-Timofeev, 2012). Such an approach can prove useful in a variety of applied fields including, amongst others, translation studies, foreign language learning and teaching, figurative language acquisition and clinical linguistics. This paper is part of the ongoing research projects The Development of Figurative Awareness during the Primary School Period: Humor and Phraseology (FFI2016-76047-P, AEI-FEDER/EU) and Metapragmatics of Children's Humor: Acquisition, Gender Perspective and Applications (GRE14-19, University of Alicante).

The Colombian immigrants in Spain meet with a different variety of their own language. This finding makes the speakers think about Spanish language and its diversity. This metalinguistic phenomenon goes beyond the connotation autonymique concept by Rey-Debove and it is due to the speaker's need or desire of planning her discourse and interacting explicitly or implicitly in the communication process. Further, this phenomenon highlights how the own linguistic variety is important by creating a social identity. The analysis also allows to discuss some aspects of metalanguage taking account of real data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of metapragmatic competence is directly proportional to the cognitive development of infants: as they become older, a linguistic maturation takes place and allows them to use the language resources to consciously produce certain effects or intentions in their speech, like humour. In this study, we focus our attention on certain morphological phenomena such as indicators or markers of humour in Spanish such as appreciative suffixation or lexicogenetic procedures used for word creation within a narrative discourse - previously indicated to be humorous-, written by boys and girls of 8 and 12 years of age. On the one hand, quantitative data on the use of these resources and their distribution by age and gender are analysed. On the other hand, it is observed if these morphological and lexical elements announce or entail humour.

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the metapragmatic ability of humor in Spanish. Taking into account that it is a pragmatic phenomenon (Ruiz Gurillo, 2006), such as metaphor or irony, this research delves into the metapragmatic abilities that promote not only its creation but also its comprehension (Ruiz Gurillo, 2016). Therefore, the speaker/writer’s perspective may be complemented with the listener/reader’s point of view. In order to illustrate these theoretical aspects, we will analyze some of the metapragmatic abilities that both comedians in monologues and speakers in conversation carry out while using humor. Firstly, a humorous genre, i.e. the monologue, will be described as a planned, public and interactional discourse. Secondly, a non-humorous genre, i.e. the spontaneous conversation, will be presented as an unplanned, private and interactive discourse. In sum, this research illustrates some contexts in which humor is used and inferenced in Spanish. Abstract This paper analyzes metapragmatic projections about Portuguese in migrant students’ narratives in Brazil. Yielded in longitudinal ethnographic research, the narratives focused on the migratory trajectories of coming, reception and permanence and their positions in front of the Portuguese. For this analysis, Povinelli’s interpretations of metapragmatics and Ochs’s studies on language socialization are central. ABSTRACT This paper describes some forms of resistance to contemporary violent arrangements - understood as the tense relations, in Brazil, between groups of the violent organized crime and between the latter and the public world - which have emerged in the speech of people who survived or were affected by a terrorist attack in the neighborhood of Benfica, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, occurred in March, 2018. In line with other studies about forms of subjective and collective flourishing in circumstances of violence or political destruction, we will term this form of resistance as 'hope'. By engaging with two interviews conducted with two survivors, a professor, and a human rights' activist, we argue that hope, in these dialogues, amounted to responding to violence not by means of vengeance or extralegal mechanisms of violence but by using tropes that inform the defense of human rights.

Based on my analysis of a communicative situation, the TV sketch comedy Adelaide broadcasted in TV show Zorra Total, and its critical context, I present how I have faced the challenge of integrating various aspects of language in analysis, expanding the sphere of research activities and guiding the researches to linguistic aspects of human affairs. In order to accomplish that, I present the contextualization of my research which has led me to select this TV sketch comedy as empirical data and I analyze this material and its critical context. Then I present the situated repertoire that guided me: two major advances that have been adopted by the applied field. Finally, I articulate the consequences of this situated repertoire to an epistemological position that I take and share with other researchers in Applied Linguistics.

The gay closet has been considered a dispositif of sexuality control in scholarship in diverse researching areas. In this research, we intend to study it from a language studies perspective, more specifically, from the field of study of the metapragmatics of the language in use. For that, through a digital ethnographic approach, we chose a YouTube humour channel directed to the gay public, named Põe na Roda. It was selected all videos in which the gay closet appeared implicitly or explicitly published during the two first years of the channel, from April 04th of 2014 to April 24th of 2016. We can assert the gay closet is an important element in the entextualization processes which occur in the select videos. It presents metapragmatic functions and is central in metapragmatic discourses articulated to gender, and to the hierarchized binary “outside X inside”. The channel makes use of diverse semiotic resources to give support to indexicalization processes and metapragmatic discourses and evaluations, which try to present the gay closet as an uniform and simple set. Such strategies indicate a series of historical accruals that, besides helping to organize practices related to gay performances and identities, can be associated with determined forms of homosexual subjectivation, at the same time in which they reveal certain communicable cartographies about these processes of subjectivation and about what is possible to communicate concerning the gay closet in this specific context The argumentative line is, therefore, that indexicality and metapragmatic construal in these evaluations work to produce and communicate modes of being in the language and in sexuality. In this sense, production of gays subjectivities, rather, is, simultaneously, presupposed and projected in relations involving both being in the gay closet and coming out. The critical tradition around the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega has highlighted the large presence of a metalinguistic reflection in his work. This reflection includes not only grammatical digressions in a traditional sense but also encompasses pragmatic and metapragmatic issues. Taking the Comentarios Reales as an example, particularly the second part, we will see how the Inca pays special attention to the relationship between the linguistic and contextual elements in the communication among the characters of the historical narrative and how it is precisely at this level that he locates many of the problems of intercomprehension between Spaniards and Indians.

This paper inquires into a yet unquestioned aspect in the debate on police “pacification” of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, namely ideologies of “communication”. It argues that rationalizations on “communication” walk hand in hand with imaginations on violence, policed subjects, and their political viability. My hypothesis is that lay rationalizations on the workings of language participate in the construction of regimes of truth on the policing of peripheries, in the demarcation of publics and in the production of sociolinguistic hierarchies, in which groups are positioned as essentially destined to protection and viability and others as naturally bound to marginality and crime.

This study discusses the relation between linguistic ideologies and identity based on studies about metapragmatics and categories of difference in a context of skilled migration in Brazil, specifical\y the migrations associated with the More Doctors for Brazil Program, a program implemented by the Brazilian government which includes, among other actions, a migration policy (both national and transnational). This research aims to identify the linguistic ideologies built in media public texts about More Doctors for Brazil Program migrants in Brazil and to relate the metapragmatics and categories of difference to the discussion of the relation between linguistic ideologies and identity in discourses produced about skilled migrants and their linguistic practices. To achieve these purposes, studies about linguistic ideologies will be used, such as those developed by Kroskrity (2004; 2008) and Blommaert (2014), as well as theories about categories of difference, mainly inserted in Piscitelli (2008), and about metapragmatics, as in Signorini (2008) and Blommaert (2010). ln addition, it is necessary to approach and relate the concepts of communicapility and mediatization introduced by Briggs (2005, 2007, 2011) in order to make it possible to.:.,understand the process of mediation of the news communicated on/by the media. The proposed methodology for this study is qualitative and document-based, using the selection of public texts for an analytical approach. The corpus consists of multimodal Brazilian public texts, of wide and varied circu\ation, produced during the period of 2013-20,14, concerning More Doctors for Brazil Program. The analysis shows that: 1) the notions of scale and textual traffic are essential to understand the visual networks found in the texts about the More Doctors for Brazil Program; 2) metapragmatics is central to the functioning of Tumblr posts and 3) the issue of language in the More Doctors for Brazil Program context is pointed as thé main argu'ment attempting to invalidate the program, or even attempting to validate its negative evaluation. The conclusion therefore is that it is necessary to extrapolate the ideological projections held by the mediatization process from the mediated communicability, in order to understand and, even more, transform and/or update the movement of production and reproduction of dominant national identities widespread and assimilated through 1anguage and differentiation of bodies in qualified and planned miaration contexts, as it is the case of More Doctors for Brazil Proaram.

Abstract: This paper discusses metapragmatic and psychoanalytic understandings of language, gender and desire. It discusses the challenge each disciplinary approach to language, gender and desire poses to the other. It argues that a robust theory of language and gender necessitates we view subjectivity as an order of phenomenon distinct from semantic and pragmatic orders of linguistic phenomena. The paper suggests two modest proposals as a way of beginning to understand the interrelationship between language and subjectivity. It begins with a very brief overview of contemporary linguistic anthropological approaches to gender and sexuality. It then describes the intimate pragmatics of speaking-subjects by articulating recent work in metapragmatics and gender with a psychoanalytically inspired account to subjectivity and desire.

This article examines the connections between the present and the pastestablished by Argentine Jews through the performance of verbal art expressionsand metapragmatic considerations about them. The work focuses specifically onhow certain expressions of the poetics of speech shape group memory. In particular,it deals with one narrative genre according to the utterers' definition and theiruse of it. Thus, the article shows the ways by means of which through the performanceof speech play in informal contexts, the narrators, Argentine born children ofJewish immigrants, establish axes of continuity and discontinuity with different pasts:one experienced by the speakers themselves or their ancestors, another onepertaining to Jewish life in Eastern Europe, and one originated in sacred texts. The purpose of this paper is to try to determine to what extent and in what way four Swedish textbooks on Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) treat pragmatic aspects, as well as to evaluate the potential and relevance of the metapragmatic information and activities related to pragmatic aspects provided by the textbooks, for the development of pragmatic awareness and competence in Spanish. This study parts from the notion of pragmatic competence as a skill of knowing how to create and understand meanings in interaction effectively (Thomas, 1995), which in intercultural interaction probably requires extra-linguistic knowledge more than language skills (cf. Bravo, 2005). The hypothesis postulated at the beginning of the study was that the manuals would not fully explain why certain language is being used in certain contexts, that the pragmatic content would be scarcely varied and rather difficult to assimilate and that the exercises would not be designed primarily to develop a pragmatic competence. To some extent it can be said that the hypothesis is confirmed: the manuals could have been more comprehensive in terms of the topics covered, they could also have varied and explained those issues further. Despite the fact that there seems to be an effort to incorporate extra-linguistic information and communicative activities, the results indicate that there is a lack of emphasis on or progression on how to treat these issues. For example, there are no didactic models or suggestions in the teacher’s guide, nor is additional information provided elsewhere; usually the metapragmatic information is not combined with any activities, and the activities that aim to develop communicative skills are not combined with further metapragmatic information.

This article tries to investigate the metapragmatic functions of and everything in Persian within the formulaic construction and everything, but. The focus of attention will be, following Bublitz and Hübler (2007), the pragmatics of this meta-utterance when it is actually performed as a means of commenting on and interfering with current discourse. In this way, it will be argued that although this construction, like its equivalent in English, does have a fixed underlying structure according to which it functions, it allows, unlike its English equivalent, for the construction of other surface structures fulfilling the same metapragmatic role. Here surface constructions are brought about by the use of Persian's different synonyms for the English but. Moreover, it will also be argued that Persian does not seem to have a formal equivalent to the English and whatnot.

Metapragmatic conscience enables a person to discriminate and relate linguistic and non-linguistic stimuli of an utterance (Gombert, 1992). It is essential in effective communication and its development occurs late because it emerges in school age. Research that has looked at metapragmatic conscience has included laboratory tests with a few participants, but there is no research that has employed greater populations to describe it. Given these data and within the framework provided by a project that seeks to investigate both late orality and the development of reading and writing, this paper informs about the design of some multimedia software, called Metapragmatic Conscience (MPC) that was applied to 103 boys and girls of, on average, eight years of age. Its design included three typical tests on metapragmatic conscience: Ambiguous Referent, Ambiguous Instructions (Flavell, 1993) and Observed Dialog (Gombert, 1992). Statistical analysis of the results helps conclude that the instrument has a high reliability (0.88 according to Cronbach's alpha). Findings indicate that Ambiguous Referent was the most difficult, followed by Ambiguous Instructions and Observed Dialog, owing to the difference in the context/ linguistic message relation. Epi- and metapragmatic responses occur together and only does their frequency vary; this means that the passage from some to the others occurs in recursive phases, rather than in determined phases. Besides, since at eight years of age metapragmatic responses are scarce, their ontogenetic development could be described by looking at an increase in them among higher elementary and secondary school students.

The aim of this work is to observe the emergence and development of metapragmatic skills related to the regulation of information. A transversal study was carried out, made up of 40 participants, aged between 22 months and 10 years. The mother tongue and that used for acquisition of knowledge were Catalan and Spanish. An observational methodology was used, recording interactive situations between the child and the adult. A category system was developed, divided into two groups: Regulation and adjustments of communication and Regulation based on the interlocutor as the centre of interest. The results show us that the Regulation and adjustments of communication category group appear at a very early age and is maintained active practically throughout all the ages observed. Initially the categories aimed at the obtaining of information predominate, while the child also facilitates information in order to maintain adequate interaction. Regarding the group of Regulation categories based on the interlocutor as the centre of interest, this appears at a later stage, when the child possesses a greater degree of competence, except the category Reference to the speech or language of others, which has been detected at an earlier age.

The Colombian immigrants in Spain meet with a different variety of their own language. This finding makes the speakers think about Spanish language and its diversity. This metalinguistic phenomenon goes beyond the connotation autonymique concept by Rey-Debove and it is due to the speaker’s need or desire of planning her discourse and interacting explicitly or implicitly in the communication process. Further, this phenomenon highlights how the own linguistic variety is important by creating a social identity. The analysis also allows to discuss some aspects of metalanguage taking account of real data.
