A multiscale analysis is presented of extreme precipitation events (EPEs) in Northern California during winter 2016–17, which caused flooding and contributed substantially to highly anomalous seasonal precipitation totals. The EPEs were characterized by long durations (≥7 days) and involved persistent large-scale flow patterns. The three largest EPEs involved blocking over the Bering Sea–Alaska region. A detailed investigation of the largest EPE, occurring on 2–10 February 2017, reveals that extreme precipitation was produced as four discrete cyclones moved across the eastern North Pacific equatorward of a high-amplitude blocking ridge and impacted the U.S. West Coast in rapid succession. The latter three cyclones developed and moved in conjunction with elongated negatively tilted troughs or PV streamers resulting from repeated episodes of baroclinic development and cyclonic Rossby wave breaking on the upstream flank of the block. Each of the four cyclones interacted with a PV streamer and an associated baroclinic zone established by anticyclonic wave breaking on the downstream flank of the block and, thereby, tracked into the U.S. West Coast. The serial clustering of the cyclones during the 9-day event resulted in persistent water vapor flux and lifting that supported extreme precipitation totals in Northern California. A climatological analysis for 1979–2017 reveals a significant statistical relationship between blocking over the Bering Sea–Alaska region and EPEs in Northern California, indicating that this type of blocking pattern represents a favorable large-scale scenario for extreme precipitation in Northern California. This observational study of westward-directed gap flows through the Columbia River Gorge uses three radar wind profilers during two winter seasons between October 2015 and April 2017, with a focus on the gapexit region at Troutdale, Oregon. Of the 92 gap-flow events identified at Troutdale, the mean duration was 38.5 h, the mean gap-jet speed was 12ms-1, and the mean gap-flow depth was 570 m MSL. The mean gap-jet height and gap-flow depthwere situated belowthe top of the inner gorge, while amaximumdepth of 1087 m MSL was contained within the gorge's outer-wall rim. The mean gap-flow depth was deepest in the cold-air source region east of the gorge and decreased westward to the coast. Strong gap-flow events were longer lived, deeper, and capped by stronger vertical shear than their weak counterparts, and strong (weak) events were forced primarily by a cold-interior anticyclone (offshore cyclone). Deep gap-flow events were longer lived, stronger, and had weaker capping vertical shear than shallow events, and represented a combination of gap-flow and synoptic forcing. Composite temporal analysis shows that gap-flow strength (depth) was maximized midevent (early event), freezing rain was most prevalent during the second half of the event, and accumulated precipitation was greatest late-event. Gap-flow events tended to begin (end) during the evening (morning) hours and were most persistent in January. Surface wind gusts and snow occurrences around Portland, Oregon, were associated primarily with the deepest gap flows, whereas freezing rain occurred predominantly during shallow gap flows. A real-time, hourly updated, online graphical data product that displays the depth and strength of easterly gap flow in the Columbia River Gorge using a 915-MHz Doppler wind profiler is presented. During precipitation events, this data product also displays observed precipitation accumulation and diagnosed precipitation type using measurements provided by a collocated heated tipping-bucket rain gauge, an optical disdrometer, and temperature and relative humidity sensors. Automated algorithms that determine the existence and depth of the gap flow, as well as precipitation type, are described. The Columbia River Gorge is the only major gap in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington. Consequently, both easterly and westerly directed gap-flow events are common in this region. Especially during late autumn and winter, easterly gap flow can cause hazardous and damaging weather (e.g., snow, freezing rain, and strong winds) in the Portland, Oregon–Vancouver, Washington metropolitan area. The product described here was developed to help forecasters at the Portland National Weather Service Forecast Office monitor cool-season easterly gap-flow events in order to provide situational awareness and guide warnings to the public about potential weather-related hazards. Dual-polarization scanning radar measurements, air temperature soundings, and a polarimetric radar-based particle identification scheme are used to generate maps and probability density functions (PDFs) of the ice water path (IWP) in Hurricanes Arthur (2014) and Irene (2011) at landfall. The IWP is separated into the contribution from small ice (i.e., ice crystals), termed small-particle IWP, and large ice (i.e., graupel and snow), termed large-particle IWP. Vertically profiling radar data from Hurricane Arthur suggest that the small ice particles detected by the scanning radar have fall velocities mostly greater than 0.25 m s−1 and that the particle identification scheme is capable of distinguishing between small and large ice particles in a mean sense. The IWP maps and PDFs reveal that the total and large-particle IWPs range up to 10 kg m−2, with the largest values confined to intense convective precipitation within the rainbands and eyewall. Small-particle IWP remains mostly <4 kg m−2, with the largest small-particle IWP values collocated with maxima in the total IWP. PDFs of the small-to-total IWP ratio have shapes that depend on the precipitation type (i.e., intense convective, stratiform, or weak-echo precipitation). The IWP ratio distribution is narrowest (broadest) in intense convective (weak echo) precipitation and peaks at a ratio of about 0.1 (0.3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice formation in orographic mixed-phase clouds can enhance precipitation and depends on the type of aerosols that serve as ice nucleating particles (INPs). The resulting precipitation from these clouds is a viable source of water, especially for regions such as the California Sierra Nevada. Thus, a better understanding of the sources of INPs that impact orographic clouds is important for assessing water availability in California. This study presents a multi-site, multi-year analysis of single-particle insoluble residues in precipitation samples that likely influenced cloud ice and precipitation formation above Yosemite National Park. Dust and biological particles represented the dominant fraction of the residues (64% on average). Cloud glaciation, determined using satellite observations, not only depended on high cloud tops (>5.9 km) and low temperatures (<−23 °C), but also on the presence of what were likely dust and biological INPs. The greatest prevalence of ice-phase clouds occurred in conjunction with biologically-rich residues and mineral dust rich in calcium, followed by iron and aluminosilicates. Dust and biological particles are known to be efficient INPs, thus these residues likely influenced ice formation in clouds above the sites and subsequent precipitation quantities reaching the surface during events with similar meteorology. The goal of this study is to use precipitation chemistry information to gain a better understanding of the potential sources of INPs in the south-central Sierra Nevada, where cloud-aerosol-precipitation interactions are poorly understood and where mixed-phase orographic clouds represent a key element in the generation of precipitation and thus the water supply in California. The wettest period during the CalWater-2014 winter field campaign occurred with a long-lived, intense atmospheric river (AR) that impacted California on 7-10 February. The AR was maintained in conjunction with the development and propagation of three successive mesoscale frontal waves. Based on Lagrangian trajectory analysis, moist air of tropical origin was tapped by the AR and was subsequently transported into California. Widespread heavy precipitation (200-400 mm) fell across the coastal mountain ranges northwest of San Francisco and across the northern Sierra Nevada, although only modest flooding ensued due to anomalously dry antecedent conditions. A NOAA G-IV aircraft flew through two of the frontal waves in the AR environment offshore during a ~24-h period. Parallel dropsonde curtains documented key three-dimensional thermodynamic and kinematic characteristics across the AR and the frontal waves prior to landfall. The AR characteristics varied, depending on the location of the cross section through the frontal waves. A newly implemented tail-mounted Doppler radar on the G-IV simultaneously captured coherent precipitation features. Along the coast, a 449-MHz wind profiler and collocated global positioning system (GPS) receiver documented prolonged AR conditions linked to the propagation of the three frontal waves and highlighted the orographic character of the coastal-mountain rainfall with the waves' landfall. A vertically pointing S-PROF radar in the coastal mountains provided detailed information on the bulk microphysical characteristics of the rainfall. Farther inland, a pair of 915-MHz wind profilers and GPS receivers quantified the orographic precipitation forcing as the AR ascended the Sierra Nevada, and as the terrain-induced Sierra barrier jet ascended the northern terminus of California's Central Valley. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are narrow regions of enhanced water vapor transport, usually found on the warm-sector side of the polar cold front in many midlatitude storms formed primarily over the oceans. Nonbrightband (NBB) rain is a shallow orographic rainfall process driven by collision and coalescence that has been observed in some of these storms. NBB rain accounts for about one-third, on average, of the total winter season rainfall occurring at a coastal mountain site in Northern California. During the California Energy Commission's CalWater project, nearly the same fraction of NBB rain was observed at a northern Sierra Nevada foothills site as compared to the coastal mountains, whereas less than half of the fractional amount of NBB rain was observed at a southern Sierra Nevada foothills site. Both Sierra Nevada sites often experience terrain-induced blocked flow, that is, Sierra barrier jet (SBJ) during landfalling winter storms. However, the northern Sierra Nevada site often is oriented geographically downwind of a gap in the coastal terrain near San Francisco during AR landfall. This gap allows maritime air in the AR to arrive at the northern site and enhance the collision-coalescence process in orographic feeder clouds as compared with the southern site. As a result, a greater amount and intensity of NBB rain and overall precipitation was produced at the northern site. This study uses a variety of observations collected in the coastal and Sierra Nevada ranges from the Hydrometeorology Testbed and CalWater field campaigns to document this behavior. An evaluation of Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) KMUX and KDAX radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) over a site in California's northern Sonoma County is performed and rain type climatology is presented. This site is next to the flood-prone Russian River basin and, because of the mountainous terrain and remoteness from operational radars, is generally believed to lack adequate coverage. QPE comparisons were conducted for multiyear observations with concurrent classification of rainfall structure using measurements from a gauge and an S-band profiler deployed at the location of interest. The radars were able to detect most of the brightband (BB) rain, which contributed over half of the total precipitation. For this rain type hourly radar-based QPE obtained with a default vertical profile of reflectivity correction provided results with errors of about 50%-60%. The operational radars did not detect precipitation during about 30% of the total rainy hours with mostly shallow nonbrightband (NBB) rain, which, depending on the radar, provided ~(12%-15%) of the total precipitation. The accuracy of radar-based QPE for the detected fraction of NBB rain was rather poor with large negative biases and characteristic errors of around 80%. On some occasions, radars falsely detected precipitation when observing high clouds, which did not precipitate or coexisted with shallow rain (less than 10% of total accumulation). For heavier rain with a significant fraction of BB hourly periods, radar QPE for event totals showed relatively good agreement with gauge data. Dryland corn (Zea mays L.) production in the northern Great Plains is limited by risk of crop failure due to drought conditions. Altering the row configuration and seeding rate have reduced the risk of yield loss elsewhere, but those areas typically receive greater precipitation than the annual average 300 to 350 mm (11.8 to 13.8 in) of the northern Great Plains. A study in 2007 and 2008 determined the impact of seeding rate and row configuration on dryland corn yield, yield quality and components, and precipitation use efficiency (PUE). Four sites in northeastern Montana were planted to corn (same variety) at four target rates (25,000,37,500,50,000 and 62,500 seeds ha-1 [10,000, 15,000,20,000, and 25,000 seeds ac-1) in conventional 0.61 in (24 in) spaced rows or in a skip-row configuration, with every third row skipped. Altering the row configuration had no impact on grain yield, harvest index, or grain PUE, but biomass yield and PUE were 12% and 15% greater for the skip-row configuration, compared to conventionally spaced corn. Interactions between row configuration and seeding rate were not significant (p < 0.05). Compared to row configuration, seeding rate had a greater impact on yield and' showed an inverse and linear relationship, where biomass, grain yield, harvest index, and PUE for grain and biomass were 19%, 229%, 200%, 222%, and 22% greater for the lowest seeding rate, when compared to the highest. Overall results suggest that for areas with low rainfall, skip-row spacing provides a modest increase in biomass yield and that adjusting seeding rates to 27,000 seeds ha-1 (10,900 seeds ac-1) or lower will likely increase dryland corn biomass and especially grain yield, though caution is warranted in extending broadly the results of this limited dataset considering the variable nature of rainfall in semiarid environments. Numerical prediction of precipitation associated with five cool-season atmospheric river events in northern California was analyzed and compared to observations. The model simulations were performed by using the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting Model (ARW-WRF) with four different microphysical parameterizations. This was done as a part of the 2005–06 field phase of the Hydrometeorological Test Bed project, for which special profilers, soundings, and surface observations were implemented. Using these unique datasets, the meteorology of atmospheric river events was described in terms of dynamical processes and the microphysical structure of the cloud systems that produced most of the surface precipitation. Events were categorized as “bright band” (BB) or “nonbright band” (NBB), the differences being the presence of significant amounts of ice aloft (or lack thereof) and a signature of higher reflectivity collocated with the melting layer produced by frozen precipitating particles descending through the 0°C isotherm. The model was reasonably successful at predicting the timing of surface fronts, the development and evolution of low-level jets associated with latent heating processes and terrain interaction, and wind flow signatures consistent with deep-layer thermal advection. However, the model showed the tendency to overestimate the duration and intensity of the impinging low-level winds. In general, all model configurations overestimated precipitation, especially in the case of BB events. Recent studies using vertically pointing S-band profiling radars showed that coastal winter storms in California and Oregon frequently do not display a melting-layer radar bright band and inferred that these nonbrightband (NBB) periods are characterized by raindrop size spectra that differ markedly from those of brightband (BB) periods. Two coastal sites in northern California were revisited in the winter of 2003/04 in this study, which extends the earlier work by augmenting the profiling radar observations with collocated raindrop disdrometers to measure drop size distributions (DSD) at the surface. The disdrometer observations are analyzed for more than 320 h of nonconvective rainfall. The new measurements confirm the earlier inferences that NBB rainfall periods are characterized by greater concentrations of small drops and smaller concentrations of large drops than BB periods. Compared with their BB counterparts, NBB periods had mean values that were 40% smaller for mean-volume diameter, 32% smaller for rain intensity, 87% larger for total drop concentration, and 81% larger (steeper) for slope of the exponential DSDs. The differences are statistically significant. Liquid water contents differ very little, however, for the two rain types. Disdrometer-based relations between radar reflectivity (Z) and rainfall intensity (R) at the site in the Coast Range Mountains were Z = 168R1.58 for BB periods and Z = 44R1.91 for NBB. The much lower coefficient, which is characteristic of NBB rainfall, is poorly represented by the Z–R equations most commonly applied to data from the operational network of Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) units, which underestimate rain accumulations by a factor of 2 or more when applied to nonconvective NBB situations. Based on the observed DSDs, it is also concluded that polarimetric scanning radars may have some limited ability to distinguish between regions of BB and NBB rainfall using differential reflectivity. However, differential-phase estimations of rain intensity are not useful for NBB rain, because the drops are too small and nearly spherical. On average, the profiler-measured echo tops were 3.2 km lower in NBB periods than during BB periods, and they extended only about 1 km above the 0°C altitude. The findings are consistent with the concept that precipitation processes during BB periods are dominated by ice processes in deep cloud layers associated with synoptic-scale forcing, whereas the more restrained growth of hydrometeors in NBB periods is primarily the result of orographically forced condensation and coalescence processes in much shallower clouds. The maritime mountain ranges of western North America span a wide range of elevations and are extremely sensitive to flooding from warm winter storms, primarily because rain falls at higher elevations and over a much greater fraction of a basin’s contributing area than during a typical storm. Accurate predictions of this rain–snow line are crucial to hydrologic forecasting. This study examines how remotely sensed atmospheric snow levels measured upstream of a mountain range (specifically, the bright band measured above radar wind profilers) can be used to accurately portray the altitude of the surface transition from snow to rain along the mountain’s windward slopes, focusing on measurements in the Sierra Nevada, California, from 2001 to 2005. Snow accumulation varies with respect to surface temperature, diurnal cycles in solar radiation, and fluctuations in the free-tropospheric melting level. At 1.5°C, 50% of precipitation events fall as rain and 50% as snow, and on average, 50% of measured precipitation contributes to increases in snow water equivalent (SWE). Between 2.5° and 3°C, snow is equally likely to melt or accumulate, with most cases resulting in no change to SWE. Qualitatively, brightband heights (BBHs) detected by 915-MHz profiling radars up to 300 km away from the American River study basin agree well with surface melting patterns. Quantitatively, this agreement can be improved by adjusting the melting elevation based on the spatial location of the profiler relative to the basin: BBHs decrease with increasing latitude and decreasing distance to the windward slope of the Sierra Nevada. Because of diurnal heating and cooling by radiation at the mountain surface, BBHs should also be adjusted to higher surface elevations near midday and lower elevations near midnight. In support of the 2004 North American Monsoon Experiment (NAME) field campaign, NOAA established and maintained a field site about 100 km north of Mazatlán, Mexico, consisting of wind profilers, precipitation profilers, surface upward–downward-looking radiometers, and a 10-m meteorological tower to observe the environment within the North American monsoon. Three objectives of this NOAA project are discussed in this paper: 1) to observe the vertical structure of precipitating cloud systems as they passed over the NOAA profiler site, 2) to estimate the vertical air motion and the raindrop size distribution from near the surface to just below the melting layer, and 3) to better understand the microphysical processes associated with stratiform rain containing well-defined radar bright bands. To provide a climatological context for the profiler observations at the field site, the profiler reflectivity distributions were compared with Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) reflectivity distributions from the 2004 season over the NAME domain as well as from the 1998–2005 seasons. This analysis places the NAME 2004 observations into the context of other monsoon seasons. It also provides a basis for evaluating the representativeness of the structure of the precipitation systems sampled at this location. The number of rain events observed by the TRMM PR is dependent on geography; the land region, which includes portions of the Sierra Madre Occidental, has more events than the coast and gulf regions. Conversely, from this study it is found that the frequencies of occurrence of stratiform rain and reflectivity profiles with radar bright bands are mostly independent of region. The analysis also revealed that the reflectivity distribution at each height has more year-to-year variability than region-to-region variability. These findings suggest that in cases with a well-defined bright band, the vertical profile of the reflectivity relative to the height of the bright band is similar over the gulf, coast, and land regions. Observations from northern California during the California Landfalling Jets (CALJET) experiment are used to examine the mean characteristics of precipitation and their variances as functions of synoptic and topographic regimes. Ten cases involving the landfall of extratropical cyclones are analyzed with radar and rain gauge data collected at two sites: one in the coastal mountains north of San Francisco (CZD) and the other in the Central Valley just west of Sacramento (KDAX). Aside from the melting-layer bright band, the most striking feature in the 10-case composite vertical profile of radar reflectivity at CZD was a distinct change in slope about 2.5 km above the bright band. This “shoulder” is thought to represent a change in the growth rate of hydrometeors. Although the bright band was quite distinct, about one-third of the profiles in the composite did not exhibit this feature. These nonbrightband (NBB) profiles had a low-level slope where reflectivity increased with decreasing altitude, a structure suggesting that collision–coalescence was the primary growth process. The relationship between surface rainfall rate and low-level radar reflectivity implies that all profiles were composed of larger numbers of small drops than expected from a Marshall–Palmer drop size distribution, a trend that was especially apparent for NBB profiles. Synoptic variability of precipitation characteristics at CZD were examined by identifying five distinct regimes (cold sector, warm front, warm sector, cold front, and cool sector) based on a simplified conceptual model. The shoulder remained approximately 2.5 km above the bright band in each regime. Rainfall intensity was highest during the cold-frontal regime and NBB rainfall was most common during the warm-frontal, warm-sector, and cool-sector regimes. Topographic variability of precipitation characteristics was investigated by comparing results at CZD and KDAX. A shoulder structure located about 2.5 km above the bright band was also evident in the KDAX profiles, suggesting that this feature is related to large-scale dynamic, thermodynamic, and microphysical processes rather than orographic effects. The relationship between surface rainfall rate and low-level radar reflectivity near KDAX closely followed a trend expected for a Marshall–Palmer drop size distribution, implying the presence of relatively larger raindrops than observed at CZD and indicating that NBB rainfall occurs less frequently near KDAX. An objective algorithm presented in White et al. was applied to vertically pointing S-band (S-PROF) radar data recorded at four sites in northern California and western Oregon during four winters to assess the geographic, interannual, and synoptic variability of stratiform nonbrightband (NBB) rain in landfalling winter storms. NBB rain typically fell in a shallow layer residing beneath the melting level (<∼3.5 km MSL), whereas rainfall possessing a brightband (BB) was usually associated with deeper echoes (>∼6 km MSL). The shallow NBB echo tops often resided beneath the coverage of the operational Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) scanning radars yet were still capable of producing flooding rains. NBB rain contributed significantly to the total winter-season rainfall at each of the four geographically distinct sites (i.e., 18%–35% of the winter-season rain totals). In addition, the rainfall observed at the coastal mountain site near Cazadero, California (CZD), during each of four winters was composed of a significant percentage of NBB rain (18%–50%); substantial NBB rainfall occurred regardless of the phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (which ranged from strong El Niño to moderate La Niña conditions). Clearly, NBB rain occurs more widely and commonly in California and Oregon than can be inferred from the single-winter, single-site study of White et al. Composite NCEP–NCAR reanalysis maps and Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES) cloud-top temperature data were examined to evaluate the synoptic conditions that characterize periods of NBB precipitation observed at CZD and how they differ from periods with bright bands. The composites indicate that both rain types were tied generally to landfalling polar-cold-frontal systems. However, synoptic conditions favoring BB rain exhibited notable distinctions from those characterizing NBB periods. This included key differences in the position of the composite 300-mb jet stream and underlying cold front with respect to CZD, as well as notable differences in the intensity of the 500-mb shortwave trough offshore of CZD. The suite of BB composites exhibited dynamically consistent synoptic-scale characteristics that yielded stronger and deeper ascent over CZD than for the typically shallower NBB rain, consistent with the GOES satellite composites that showed 20-K warmer (2.3-km shallower) cloud tops for NBB rain. Composite soundings for both rain types possessed low-level potential instability, but the NBB sounding was warmer and moister with stronger low-level upslope flow, thus implying that orographically forced rainfall is enhanced during NBB conditions. Data from the California Land-Falling Jets Experiment (CALJET) are used to explore the causes of variations in flood severity in adjacent coastal watersheds within the Santa Cruz Mountains on 2–3 February 1998. While Pescadero Creek (rural) experienced its flood of record, the adjacent San Lorenzo Creek (heavily populated), attained only its fourth-highest flow. This difference resulted from conditions present while the warm sector of the storm, with its associated low-level jet, high moisture content, and weak static stability, was overhead. Rainfall in the warm sector was dominated by orographic forcing. While the wind speed strongly modulated rain rates on windward slopes, the wind direction positioned the edge of a rain shadow cast by the Santa Lucia Mountains partially over the San Lorenzo basin, thus protecting the city of Santa Cruz from a more severe flood. Roughly 26% ± 9% of the streamflow at flood peak on Pescadero Creek resulted from the warm-sector rainfall. Without this rainfall, the peak flow on Pescadero Creek would likely not have attained record status. These results are complemented by a climatological analysis based on ∼50-yr-duration streamflow records for these and two other nearby windward watersheds situated ∼20 to 40 km farther to the east, and a comparison of this climatological analysis with composites of NCEP–NCAR reanalysis fields. The westernmost watersheds were found to have their greatest floods during El Niño winters, while the easternmost watersheds peaked during non–El Niño episodes. These results are consistent with the case study, that showed that the composite 925-mb, meridionally oriented wind direction during El Niños favors a rain shadow over the eastern watersheds. During non–El Niño periods, the composite, zonally oriented wind direction indicates that the sheltering effect of the rain shadow on the eastern watersheds is reduced, while weaker winds, less water vapor, and stronger stratification reduce the peak runoff in the western watersheds relative to El Niño periods. These case study and climatological results illustrate the importance of conditions in the moisture-rich warm sector of landfalling Pacific winter storms. Although many other variables can influence flooding, this study shows that variations of ±10° in wind direction can modulate the location of orographically enhanced floods. While terrain can increase predictability (e.g., rainfall typically increases with altitude), the predictability is reduced when conditions are near a threshold separating different regimes (e.g., in or out of a rain shadow). A new S-band vertical profiler with a coupler option for extending the dynamic range of the radar's receiver is discussed. The added dynamic range allows the profiler to record radar reflectivity measurements in moderate to heavy precipitation that otherwise would not have been possible with this system because of receiver saturation. The radar hardware, signal processor, and operating software are based on existing S-band and UHF profiler technology. Results from a side-by-side comparison with a calibrated Ka-band radar are used to determine the calibration and sensitivity of the S-band profiler. In a typical cloud profiling mode of operation, the sensitivity is 214 dBZ at 10 km. Examples taken from a recent field campaign are shown to illustrate the profiler's ability to measure vertical velocity and radar reflectivity profiles in clouds and precipitation, with particular emphasis on the benefit provided by the coupler technology. Precipitation chemistry can provide unique insights into the composition of aerosol particles involved in precipitation processes. Until recently, precipitation chemistry studies focused predominantly on soluble components. Analyzing the single particle insoluble components in addition to soluble ions in precipitation can provide detailed information on the individual particles originally in the cloud or removed by precipitation as well as the source of the aerosols. Herein, we present an in-depth analysis of resuspended residues from precipitation samples collected at a remote site in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California during the 2009-2011 winter seasons. In addition, we present results from laboratory control experiments of dust, leaf litter, smoke, and sea salt samples that were conducted to better understand how insoluble and soluble residues are distributed during the atomization process and aid in the classification of the residue compositions in the precipitation samples. Further, immersion freezing ice nuclei (IN) measurements of insoluble residues from precipitation water enabled the determination of residue types that likely seeded clouds. Long-range transported dust mixed with biological material tended to be more IN active, while purely biological residues contained a variety of high and low temperature IN. Overall, results from this study can be used as a benchmark for classification of insoluble precipitation residues in future studies. Knowledge of the precipitation chemistry of insoluble residues coupled with meteorological and cloud microphysical measurements will ultimately improve our understanding of the link between aerosols, clouds, and precipitation.
