Abstract

International audience; In the previous study, we associated 223 asteroids to 28 meteor showers by using three D-Criteria metrics, our own empirical method of threshold selection and D-parameter uncertainty. The databases used in the simulation were the MPCORB (for asteroids) and IAU Meteor Data Center (for meteor showers) from February 2017. In the present work, we will present an update of our previous study on the new databases (the MPCORB and meteor shower databases form February 2018). In the new simulation, we found 72 additional asteroids that can be associated to 20 meteor showers. By using physical parameters, we found the fast-rotator asteroid 2007RS146

Abstract

Context. Fireball networks are developing over the whole planet, with the aim of recovering meteorites and at the same time determining their orbits. The ultimate goal of such networks is to identify the parent bodies of meteorite families to achieve this, orbit accuracy is critical. Yet, the determination of an orbit relies on a long and complex reduction process including: (1) astrometry, with heavy distortion for fish-eye lenses, (2) estimation of the external bias on the observation, (3) fit of the trajectory, (4) deceleration model, and (5) actual orbit computation. Aims. Our goal is to compute accurate trajectories with an estimate of internal and external errors as realistic as possible, taking advantage of the dense observation network FRIPON (Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network), which comprises more than 100 cameras in France and Europe. In particular, we pay special attention to the distortion of images due to fish-eye lenses. In the present paper, we describe the analytical protocol that allows us to compute trajectories and their uncertainties. Methods. We developed a general distortion model to be used on the FRIPON fish-eye cameras. Such a model needs to be accurate even at low elevation, as most fireball observations are performed low on the horizon. The radial distortion is modelled by a nine-degree odd polynomial, hence by five parameters. In addition, we used three parameters to describe the geometry of the camera and two for non-symmetrical distortion. Lastly, we used a new statistical method taking systematic errors into account, which allows us to compute realistic confidence intervals. We tested our method on a fireball that fell on 2017-08-94 UT 00:06. Results. The accuracy of our astrometrical model for each camera is 2 arcmin (1σ), but the internal error on the fireball of 2017-08-94 UT 00:06 measurement is 0.7 arcmin (better than 1/10 pixel). We developed a method to estimate the external error considering that each station is independent and found it equal to 0.8 arcmin. Real residuals are coherent with our estimation of internal and external error for each camera, which confirms the internal consistency of our method. Abstract

Context. Determining the source regions of meteorites is one of the major goals of current research in planetary science. Whereas asteroid observations are currently unable to pinpoint the source regions of most meteorite classes, observations of meteors with camera networks and the subsequent recovery of the meteorite may help make progress on this question. The main caveat of such an approach, however, is that the recovery rate of meteorite falls is low (<20%), implying that the meteoritic analogues of at least 80% of the observed falls remain unknown. Aims. Spectroscopic observations of incoming bolides may have the potential to mitigate this problem by classifying the incoming meteoritic material. Methods. To probe the use of spectroscopy to determine the meteoritic analogues of incoming bolides, we collected emission spectra in the visible range (320-880 nm) of five meteorite types (H, L, LL, CM, and eucrite) acquired in atmospheric entry-like conditions in a plasma wind tunnel at the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). A detailed spectral analysis including a systematic line identification and mass ratio determinations (Mg/Fe, Na/Fe) was subsequently performed on all spectra. Results. It appears that spectroscopy, via a simple line identification, allows us to distinguish the three main meteorite classes (chondrites, achondrites and irons) but it does not have the potential to distinguish for example an H chondrite from a CM chondrite. Conclusions. The source location within the main belt of the different meteorite classes (H, L, LL, CM, CI, etc.) should continue to be investigated via fireball observation networks. Spectroscopy of incoming bolides only marginally helps precisely classify the incoming material (iron meteorites only). To reach a statistically significant sample of recovered meteorites along with accurate orbits (>100) within a reasonable time frame (10-20 years), the optimal solution may be the spatial extension of existing fireball observation networks. 4. Spectral properties of the largest asteroids associated with Taurid Complex.

Abstract

Context. The Taurid Complex is a massive stream of material in the inner part of the Solar System. It contains objects spanning the range of 10-6-103 m, considered by some authors to have a common cometary origin. The asteroids belonging to Taurid Complex are on Apollo type orbit, with most of them being flagged as potentially hazardous asteroids. In this context, understanding the nature and the origin of this asteroidal population is not only of scientific interest but also of practical importance. Aims. We aim to investigate the surface mineralogy of the asteroids associated with Taurid Complex using visible and near-infrared spectral data. Compositional linking between these asteroids and meteorites can be derived based on the obtained spectra. Methods. We obtained spectra of six of the largest asteroids (2201, 4183, 4486, 5143, 6063, and 269690) associated with Taurid complex. The observations were made with the IRTF telescope equipped with the spectro-imager SpeX. Their taxonomic classification is made using Bus-DeMeo taxonomy. The asteroid spectra are compared with the meteorite spectra from the Relab database. Mineralogical models were applied to determine their surface composition. All the spectral analysis is made in the context of the already published physical data. Results. Five of the objects studied in this paper present spectral characteristics similar to the S taxonomic complex. The spectra of ordinary chondrites (spanning H, L, and LL subtypes) are the best matches for these asteroid spectra. The asteroid (269690) 1996 RG3 presents a flat featureless spectrum which could be associated to a primitive C-type object. The increased reflectance above 2.1 microns constrains its geometrical albedo to a value around 0.03. Conclusions. While there is an important dynamical grouping among the Taurid Complex asteroids, the spectral data of the largest objects do not support a common cometary origin. Abstract

Introduction: The Meteorite Orbits Reconstruction by Optical Imaging (MOROI) project [1] started in 2017 in Romania with the aim of capturing images of meteors with the use of all-sky cameras. In January 2021 the MOROI project became a part of the Fireball Recovery and Inter Planetary Observation Network (FRIPON) [2]. The meteors recorded by the FRIPON cameras are stored on a centralized database located in the Pytheas structure in Marseille [2]. The data on meteors recorded by the FRIPON cameras can be found online [3]. FRIPON (thus, MOROI) uses all-sky cameras with fish-eye lens [2]. FreeTure software is used for collecting the data that is afterwards stored at the server in Marseille [2]. Methods: The input data for this study are the slope as well as the velocity and height profiles of the meteoroids during the luminous trajectory. The characterization of meteoroids is made based on the ballistic coefficient α and the mass-loss parameter β. The way of determining the α and β parameters is explained in detail in [4]. This method is in use by the other all-sky cameras networks including the Finnish Fireball Network, the Desert Fireball Network and the Spanish Fireball and Meteorite Network [5,6]. The computed values of α and β for fireballs detected by the Prairie Network and the Canadian Network can be found in the literature [7]. The α-β algorithm was applied to meteors detected by the Desert Fireball Network in [8] and based on this the conclusion whether the meteoroid could produce or not meteorites on the ground was drawn. The account for real atmospheric conditions is presented in [9]. Results: We applied the α-β algorithm to a sample of fireballs with noticeable deceleration recorded by the FRIPON network in Romania with the use of MOROI cameras [10]. The determined α and β parameters allow to compute the mass at the beginning of the luminous trajectory and, when applicable, the remnant mass after the end of ablation process for each event [10, 4, 9]. Based on the boundary values of the shape change parameter that 𝜇 = 0 (corresponding to the oriented motion of the meteoroid) or 𝜇 = 2 3 (when the meteoroid rotates fast and loses the mass uniformly in all directions) and using the criteria presented in [11,8] we identify which meteoroids from our study produce meteorites on Earth's surface. Conclusion: The algorithms described in [4, 11, 8] allow to effectively characterize the fireball events captured by the FRIPON-MOROI network in Romania [10]. The final outcome of the meteoroids' entry into the atmosphere is shown as "likely fall", "possible fall" and "unlikely fall" [10]. This work presents a way of finding out the most interesting events out of a set of meteor data. This is important in order to select the most promising events for a further dark-flight trajectory study and subsequent meteorite recovery. This presentation shows part of the results that can be achieved by the FRIPON network in a year and a half of functionality and is useful for colleagues who that for a meteor data-processing pipeline or countries that want to initiate collaborations with FRIPON. Abstract

Two meteorite pieces have been recovered in Italy, near the town of Cavezzo (Modena), on 2020 January 4th. The associated fireball was observed on the evening of New Year’s Day 2020 by eight all-sky cameras of the PRISMA fireball network, a partner of FRIPON. The computed trajectory had an inclination angle of approximately 68° and a velocity at infinity of 12.8 km s−1. Together with the relatively low terminal height, estimated as 21.5 km, those values were indicating the significant possibility of a meteorite dropping event, as additionally confirmed by the non-zero residual total mass. The strewn-field was computed taking into account the presence of two bright light flashes, revealing that the meteoroid had been very likely subject to fragmentation. Three days after the event, two samples, weighing 3.1 and 52.2 g, were collected as a result of a dedicated field search and thanks to the involvement of the local people. The two pieces were immediately recognized as freshly fallen fragments of meteorite. The computed orbital elements, compared with the ones of known Near-Earth Asteroids from the NEODyS database, are compatible with one asteroid only; 2013 VC10. The estimated original mass of the meteoroid, 3.5 kg, and size, approximately 13 cm, is so far the smallest among the current 35 cases in which meteorites were recovered from precise strewn-field computation thanks to observational data. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of accurate processing of fireball network data even on challenging events generated by small size meteoroids.

Abstract

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 10km. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < -5; meteoroid size ≥∼1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/10km. This value is compatible with previous estimates. Finally, the first meteorite was recovered in Italy (Cavezzo, January 2020) thanks to the PRISMA network, a component of the FRIPON science project., FRIPON was initiated by funding from ANR (grant N.13- BS05-0009-03), carried by the Paris Observatory, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris-Saclay University and Institut Pythéas (LAM-CEREGE).
