Objectives: This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties, antibacterial effect and biocompatibility of novel elastomeric temporary resin-based filling materials (TFMs) containing zinc methacrylate (ZM)., Material and Methods: Experimental TFMs were prepared by mixing the zinc methacrylate with monomer, co-monomer, photoinitiator and fillers. A ZM concentration of 0 (control), 0.5% (Z0.5); 1% (Z1), 2% (Z2), or 5% (ZM5) wt% was added to the TFMs. Fermit-N (F) was used for comparison with the experimental material. Microleakage, water sorption/solubility, degree of conversion, depth of cure, ultimate tensile strength, and hardness were determined and compared. A modified direct contact test (DCT) with Enterococcus faecalis and a Streptococcus mutans' biofilm accumulation assay was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial effect and cytotoxicity of the assay. Statistical comparisons were performed (α=5%)., Results: The results showed that the physical and mechanical properties of the experimental TFMs with ZM are comparable with the properties of the commercial reference and some properties were improved, such as lower microleakage and water sorption, and higher ultimate tensile strength values. TFMs with ZM killed E. faecalis only after 1 h. Biofilm development of S. mutans was not affected by the inclusion of ZM in the experimental TFMs., Conclusions: The present findings suggest that the physical, mechanical and biological properties of the experimental TFMs with ZM are comparable with the properties of the commercial reference. However, some properties were improved, such as lower microleakage and water sorption, and higher ultimate tensile strength values.

Objectives: This study describes the synthesis of piperonyl methacrylate (PipM) and evaluates its effect when used as coinitiator in the photoinitiated radical polymerization of experimental adhesive resins., Methods: PipM was synthetized through an esterification reaction and characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Adhesive resins containing camphorquinone as photoinitiator and PipM or ethyl-4-dimethyl amine benzoate (EDAB) as coinitiators were formulated. Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) adhesive was used as commercial reference. All materials were analyzed for polymerization kinetics, flexural strength, elastic modulus, water sorption/solubility, shear bond strength to bovine enamel and dentin, characterization of hybrid layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microbiological direct contact test, and cytotoxicity., Results: The adhesive with PipM presented higher degree of conversion and lower sorption/solubility when compared with other groups. Shear bond strength to enamel and dentin were similar for PipM and EDAB materials. The percentage of cellular viability was close to 100% and similar in the experimental groups and the commercial reference., Conclusions: PipM presented similar or superior performance to the tertiary amine used as control, representing a potential alternative coinitiator for photopolymerizable dental materials., Clinical Significance: PipM could be potentially useful in the formulations of adhesive systems with enhanced chemical properties, which could mean improvement in the longevity of composite resin restorations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the anti-antibiofilm potential of silver methacrylate (Ag) or di-n-butyldimethacrylatetin (Sn) in experimental adhesive systems. Ag and Sn methacrylates were incorporated at 0.5mol%, 1mol% and 2mol% in an adhesive resin. The anti-antibiofilm potential, degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), water sorption/solubility (W SR/SL ), bonded interfaces pattern (SEM), cytotoxicity and leaching of Ag and Sn ions were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed considering α = 0.05. Only Ag at 2% affected DC and μTBS. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 1% and 2% showed anti-biofilm potential against Mutans streptococci. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 2% showed a statistically significant difference to the control in W SR/SL (p < 0.05). The additions of metal methacrylate did not affect cell viability, being the adhesive resins statistically similar to controls. Leached metals of Ag were more than 100x higher than for Sn. Between the concentration tested, Ag and Sn methacrylate at 1% presented an anti-biofilm effect without altering the mechanical properties evaluated., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical properties, the antimicrobial effect, and the biocompatibility of dual polymerization experimental sealers after the incorporation of dibutyltin (ET) or calcium (EC) methacrylate at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5%., Methods: RealSeal (RS; SybronEndo, Glendora, CA) was used as a commercial control. Materials were evaluated regarding film thickness, degree of conversion, radiopacity, antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecalis using the modified direct contact test, and cell viability. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by the Tukey test or the Student-Newman-Keuls test in SigmaPlot 12.0 (Systat Software, Inc, Point Richmond, CA) (P = .05)., Results: The film thickness of the dibutyltin and calcium were greater than experimental sealers following the standards given by ISO 6876:2012. For degree of conversion, dual polymerization was not influenced by the addition of metal methacrylate. Regarding the modified direct contact test, calcium and dibutyltin at all concentrations showed antimicrobial activity when compared with the positive control after 48 hours of contact (P < .05). In cell viability, ET at all concentrations showed high cytotoxicity similar to RS, and EC at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% showed moderate cytotoxicity that was less than 5% of calcium and RS., Conclusions: It was concluded that calcium and dibutyltin methacrylate incorporation in experimental sealers promoted the antimicrobial effect. The incorporation of calcium methacrylate at 0.5%, 1%, and 2% seemed to be a good treatment option to provide antimicrobial activity associated with moderate cytotoxicity and adequate physical properties., (Copyright © 2017 American Association of Endodontists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) by methacrylate surfactant monomers on the cytotoxicity and degree of conversion of two-step self-etching dentin adhesive systems. Five HEMA-free adhesive systems were tested: Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, PEG400, PEG400UDMA, PEG1000, and a HEMA group was used as positive control. The cytotoxicity of the experimental primers, with different monomer concentrations (2 or 20 wt%), and bond resins, containing 25 wt% surfactant, was assessed using murine fibroblast cell line 3T3 and the tetrazolium assay (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT)). The degree of conversion of the bond resins was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The data were submitted to statistical analysis using level of significance set at P < 0.05. The PEG 1000 group obtained higher cell viability in comparison with HEMA in the 2 % primer. The cell survival rate using 20 % primer showed that PEG1000 and BIS-EMA 10 were less cytotoxic than HEMA. With regard to the eluate from bond resin, the data showed that the groups BIS-EMA 10, BIS-EMA 30 and PEG400UDMA were less cytotoxic than HEMA. No statistically significant difference was found among degrees of conversion of the experimental groups and HEMA. PEG 1000, BIS-EMA 10 and 30 monomers showed the biological potential for use in new adhesive system formulations since they showed lower cytotoxicity and similar degree of conversion when compared with the HEMA-containing group.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an alternative acidic monomer (polypropylene glycol phosphate methacrylate--Poly-P) to constitute experimental two-step self-etch adhesive systems and also to evaluate its influence on the pH and microshear bond strength (μSBS) to enamel., Methods: Primers containing Poly-P (10, 15, 30 or 50wt.%), HEMA, ethanol, and water were prepared and allocated in subgroups according to a buffered or non-buffered pH. One experimental control and one commercial (Clearfill™ SE Bond) references were used. μSBS protocol was performed at human enamel, followed by mechanical testing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed after each primer application. Data was analysed by one-way Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (p<0.05) and by linear regression predictive models., Results: As greater the Poly-P content, the lower the primer's pH. Buffered groups showed lower μSBS values than non-buffered groups. Groups with Poly-P content equal or higher than 30wt.% showed similar μSBS results when compared to the controls. SEM images demonstrated that primers with high Poly-P content etched enamel with prisms exposure., Conclusions: The pH of the primer was directly influenced by the concentration of acidic monomer, which directly affected the adhesion to enamel. Both the acidity and the type of acid-functional monomer present in the adhesive influenced the bond strength results., Clinical Significance: Poly-P synthesis was easy and effective, and considering the good bond strength results obtained, this acid-functional monomer may be potentially used in the formulation of self-etch dental adhesive systems., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of experimental HEMA-containing and HEMA-free resin adhesives., Materials and Methods: Experimental HEMA-free adhesives containing alternative dimethacrylates (bis-EMA 10 [B10], bis-EMA 30 [B30], PEG 400 [P400], PEG 1000 [P1000], PEG 400 UDMA [UP400]) were formulated and compared with a HEMA-containing adhesive (control). The adhesives were characterized by rheological analysis, polymerization kinetics (PK), water sorption (WS), and solubility (SL) tests. Flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (E) tests were performed under dry or wet conditions (distilled water or 70% ethanol solution). One-way and two-way ANOVA as well as Tukey's test were used to evaluate differences between groups (p < 0.05)., Results: The control group showed the lowest viscosity and was the only one with a degree of conversion lower than 50%. The control and the P1000 adhesive showed the statistically significantly highest WS (p < 0.05). The control and the UP400 adhesive showed the highest FS and E, and the dry-stored specimens showed more improved mechanical strength than did the wet-stored specimens (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The physicomechanical properties of some of the HEMA-free adhesives were substantially improved when compared with those of the control, indicating that they could be potential monomers for the development of HEMA-free adhesive systems.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hypothesis that replacing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) for surfactant dimethacrylates (SD) does not affect the immediate and long-term microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of experimental two-step self-etch HEMA-free adhesive systems applied on dentin., Materials and Methods: Five experimental HEMA-free two-step self-etching systems containing different SD (ethoxylated bisphenol A diglycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-EMA 10, B10), Bis-EMA 30 (B30), poly-ethyleneglycol (400) dimethacrylate (PEG 400, P400), PEG 1000 (P1000), and PEG 400 urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) (UP400)) and a HEMA-containing system (control) (HA) were formulated. Specimens were subjected to the μTBS test after 24 h and 6 and 12 months of storage. Data (in megapascals) were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05)., Results: Medians of the μTBS data after 24 h of storage are: HA = 57.2(A), B10 = 26.2(BC), B30 = 24.0(C), P400 = 32.6(BC), P1000 = 37.3(B), and UP400 = 57.9(A); after 6 months are: HA = 47.9(A), B10 = 18.5(B), B30 = 7.8(C), P400 = 16.1(B), P1000 = 14.6(BC), and UP400 = 51.6(A); and after 12 months are: HA = 31.2(A), B10 = 15.2(B), B30 = 9.0(B), P400 = 9.1(B), P1000 = 13.3(B), and UP400 = 35.7(A). Between the HEMA-free groups, the adhesive system formulated with PEG 400 UDMA produced similar μTBS to the HEMA-containing group. Also, the storage of specimens decreased the μTBS (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Replacing HEMA for PEG 400 UDMA in an adhesive system formulation generated a satisfactory μTBS to dentin., Clinical Relevance: Surfactant dimethacrylates have a potential use in the development of HEMA-free self-etching adhesive systems, which are more chemically stable.

This study evaluated the effect of zinc methacrylate (ZM) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of an experimental polymer. Enzymes secreted from mouse gingival tissues were analyzed by gelatin zymography in buffers containing 5 mM CaCl(2) (Tris-CaCl(2)) in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer with various concentrations of ZM (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mM). The matrix metalloproteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized by immunoprecipitation. The polymer UTS evaluation was performed in eight groups with various concentrations of ZM (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt.%), in a mechanical testing machine. MMP-2 (62 kDa) was detected in the zymographic assays and inhibited by ZM in all tested concentrations. UTS data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05), and no significant differences were observed among groups, except in the polymer containing 30% ZM, presenting a significantly lower value when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The results suggest that ZM inhibits MMP-2 expression in all concentrations tested, while small concentrations did not affect the ultimate tensile strength of the polymer. Zinc methacrylate is a metalloproteinase inhibitor that can be copolymerized with other methacrylate monomers. Yet, the addition of ZM did not affect the resin bond strength. Thus, in vivo tests should be performed to evaluate the performance of this material.

Background: Candida-associated denture stomatitis is the most common manifestation of oral candidal infection, caused mainly by Candida albicans. Several authors have attempted to add antifungal agents or antiseptics to denture temporary soft lining materials or to denture acrylic resins, without relevant results. Therefore, the investigation of a quaternary ammonium functionalized compound [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (MADQUAT), which copolymerizes with methacrylates and which could act as a fungal inhibitor, is of paramount importance., Aims: To evaluate the in vitro activity of MADQUAT against Candida species., Methods: Thirty-one Candida strains were used to determine the in vitro antifungal activity of this compound. The minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum fungicidal concentrations of MADQUAT and nystatin were determined., Results: MADQUAT showed antifungal properties at concentrations of 6.25 to > 100mg/ml, and fungicidal activity between 25 and > 100mg/ml. The quantitative determinations of the fungistatic and fungicidal activity of MADQUAT showed fungistatic activity against all Candida albicans, Candida krusei and Candida parapsilosis strains, revealing fungicidal activity against some strains of the other species., Conclusions: MADQUAT has antifungal activity against Candida spp. Moreover, the sensitivity to this substance varies across the different species in terms of MIC values and fungicidal or fungistatic activity., (Copyright © 2010 Revista Iberoamericana de Micología. This study evaluated the influence of surfactant dimethacrylates (SD) on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and characterized the interfacial micromorphology of the hybrid layer of the experimental HEMA-free self-etching systems. Five experimental HEMA-free two-step self-etching systems containing different SD (Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, PEG 400, PEG 1000, and PEG 400 UDMA) and a HEMA-containing system (control) were compared. Each experimental adhesive system was applied and resin composite restorations were incrementally built up in bovine incisors. After 24 h, restored teeth were sectioned to obtain 24 sticks per group. Thereafter, the specimens were subjected to the μTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Adhesive-dentin interfaces were analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The adhesive system formulated with PEG 400 UDMA produced μTBS similar to the HEMA-containing group and statistically higher than the HEMA-free groups. Similar failure percentages were observed in the PEG 400 UDMA and the control group. In the SEM analysis, all the adhesive systems presented similar partially demineralized hybrid layer (1.5-3.0 μm thickness) with well-formed resin tags. All SD presented reasonable initial μTBS, with the PEG 400 UDMA being a promising monomer to be considered as a HEMA substitute in adhesive systems compositions., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

This study evaluates the effect of zinc methacrylate (ZM) on the degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity (AA) of an experimental resin. Tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate was used as the experimental resin and it was photo activated using camphoroquinone and ethyl 4-dimethylamine benzoate. Additionally, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20 and 30 wt% of ZM was added to the various experimental resins. The DC was accessed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. For cytotoxicity, immortalized mouse fibroblasts were exposed to the experimental resin extracts. An MTT assay was used to access the cytotoxicity. The AA against Streptococcus mutans UA159 was accessed by the agar diffusion method. An improvement in the DC in all concentrations of ZM was observed. The greater the amount of ZM on the experimental resin, the less the cytotoxicity was provoked. Three ZM concentrations showed AA that exhibited various inhibition growth zones with 10, 20 (10 mm) and 30 wt% (15 mm).

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of variations in 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) concentrations in an experimental comonomer blend on degree of conversion, water sorption, solubility, and ultimate tensile strength of adhesive resin., Materials and Methods: The effect of HEMA content (0, 15, 30, and 50%wt - control, G15, G30, and G50 groups, respectively) was tested in an experimental comonomer blend of bis-GMA, bis-EMA, TEG-DMA, and HEMA. The degree of conversion, polymerization rate, ultimate tensile strength, water sorption, and solubility of the adhesive resin blends were determined., Results: At 40 s of light activation time, groups G30 and G50 showed a decrease of 30% and 61%, respectively, in degree of conversion compared to control. Water sorption and solubility differed for all groups, and was statistically higher in G50. For ultimate tensile strength, the control and G15 groups showed statistically higher values than the other groups (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Higher HEMA content increases dental adhesive resin degradation.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of Bis-EMA 30 on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) and structural reliability of the experimental three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems., Methods: Five experimental primers containing different dimethacrylate monomer concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 wt% of the Bis-EMA 30, P0.P60) added to acid monomer and solvents (ethanol/water), and a resin bond (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, 50/50 wt%) were formulated. The adhesive system Scotchbond MultiPurpose (SBMP, 3M ESPE) was tested as commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into six groups, and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. After acid etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was actively applied (30 s), followed by a mild air stream (10 s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light activated for 20 s. Resin composite restorations were incrementally built up. The restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and then sectioned to obtain sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.5 mm(2), after which 24 specimens per group were subjected to the microTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Tukey test (alpha=0.05) and Weibull analysis., Results: The P40 group showed microTBS means similar to those of the control (SBMP), whereas both had statistically higher values when compared with the other groups (p<0.001). Moreover, P40 showed higher structural reliability, represented by the high Weibull modulus and characteristic strength values. The lowest microTBS was observed in the P0, P10 and P20 groups, which also had low structural reliability., Significance: Bis-EMA 30 is a promising monomer to be considered as a substitute for HEMA in adhesive system compositions., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in vitro. Mouse gingival explants were cultured overnight in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's minimal essential medium, following which the expression of secreted enzymes was analyzed by gelatin zymography and the effects of different amounts of HEMA on enzyme activity were investigated. The gelatinolytic proteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized as being matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by means of specific chemical inhibition. The MMPs present in the conditioned media were identified, using immunoprecipitation, as MMP-2. Three major bands were detected in the zymographic assays and were characterized, according to their respective molecular weights, into the following forms of MMP-2: zymogene (72 kDa), intermediate (66 kDa), and active (62 kDa). All forms of MMP-2 were inhibited by HEMA in a dose-dependent manner, implying that MMP-2 may be inhibited by HEMA in vivo.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an acidic monomer using an alternative synthetic pathway and to evaluate the influence of the acidic monomer concentration on the microtensile bond strength to dentin., Methods: The intermediary 5-hydroxypentyl methacrylate (HPMA) was synthesized through methacrylic acid esterification with 1,5-pentanediol, catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid. To displace the reaction balance, the water generated by esterification was removed by three different methods: anhydrous sodium sulfate; molecular sieves or azeotropic distillation. In the next step, a phosphorus pentoxide (4.82 mmol) slurry was formed in cold acetone and 29 mmol of HPMA was slowly added by funnel addition. After the reaction ended, solvent was evaporated and the product was characterized by 1HNMR and FTIR. The phosphate monomer was introduced in a self-etch primer at concentrations of 0, 15, 30, 50, 70 and 100 wt%. Clearfil SE Bond was used as commercial reference. Microtensile bond strength to dentin was evaluated 24h after the bonding procedures, followed by fracture analysis (n=20). Data was submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test., Results: The highest yield was obtained (62%) when azeotropic distillation was used, while the reaction with molecular sieves was not feasible. The phosphoric moiety attachment to the monomer was successfully performed with a quantitative yield that reached around 100%. The acidic monomer concentration significantly affected the bond strength and the highest mean (55.1+/-12.8 MPa) was obtained when 50% of acidic monomer was used., Conclusion: The synthesis pathways described in the present study appear to be a viable alternative for developing phosphate monomers.

Objective: To investigate the role of chain extender size from Bis-EMA monomers on the polymerization profiles and properties of the crosslinked polymers. Additionally, the influence of Bis-GMA was also evaluated., Methods: The polymer network from homopolymers Bis-EMA4, Bis-EMA10 and Bis-EMA30 was characterized, as well as copolymers formed among these monomers and Bis-GMA. The degree of conversion from neat and blended monomers as a function of photo-activation time was evaluated by FTIR. Rate of polymerization, network parameter and cross-link density from materials were demonstrated. Water sorption and solubility were determined according to ISO 4049 specification and the data obtained were analyzed by two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). Flexural strength and Young's modulus from polymerized monomers/co-monomers were measured after 24h water storage at 37 degrees C and the results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (alpha=0.05)., Results: Monomers with larger ethylene oxide units presented the highest values regarding the degree of conversion and cross-link density. The effect of the chain extender length was also observed in water sorption and solubility polymer characteristics, with Bis-EMA4 being the most hydrophobic polymer. Bis-EMA10 and Bis-EMA30 homopolymers were not able to be tested with the three point bending test due to their great flexibility. The addition of Bis-GMA produced stronger and more rigid Bis-EMA polymers (p<0.05)., Significance: Aromatic dimethacrylates with different chain extender lengths can be a useful alternative in controlling the properties of a dental material, adjusting those to specific applications.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate new dentin bonding agents formulated with 2,3-epithiopropyl methacrylate (ETMA) comonomer blends., Methods: Synthesis and characterization of ETMA were performed. Adhesive resins with three different ETMA concentrations (0.1, 1 and 10 wt.%) were prepared. To comparison a blend with only Bis-GMA/HEMA and with 1% of GMA were used as controls. FTIR analysis was used to verify the degree of conversion. Blend copolymerization was investigated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy analysis. To investigate immediate properties of experimental adhesives, microtensile bond strength to human dentin and SEM fractographic analysis were studied., Results: ETMA was synthesized with 90% yield through a one step synthetic route. Degree of conversion for the experimental and control resins was not significantly different. Different monomers showed copolymerization among them, not presenting traces of ETMA release in 0.1 and 1% groups. Bonding agents containing ETMA had statistically higher microtensile bond strength values than the no ETMA adhesive (p<0.05)., Conclusions: Dental adhesive resin-ETMA mixtures produced increased bond strengths without harming the other properties investigated.

This study sought to evaluate the physical and antimicrobial properties of a thermopolymerizable acrylic resin (PMMA) modified with metallic methacrylate monomers -zirconia (ZM), tin (TM), and di-n-butyl (DNTMB) methacrylates. Color stability was evaluated before and after immersion of samples in a staining solution by a digital spectrophotometer. The mechanical brushing test was evaluated by the roughness test. The flexural strength test used a mechanical testing machine. Human keratinocytes were used to assess cell viability and the biofilm formation assay was carried out for 5 days, in a microcosms model after one year of specimen storage. The addition of DNTMB to PMMA promoted great antimicrobial action, acceptable cytocompatibility, without hampering the physical-mechanical properties of the commercial material. Therefore, the modified PMMA proved to be a promisor alternative to conventional resins. This study sought to evaluate the physical and antimicrobial properties of a thermopolymerizable acrylic resin (PMMA) modified with metallic methacrylate monomers -zirconia (ZM), tin (TM), and di-n-butyldimethacrylate-tin (DNTMB) methacrylates. Color stability was evaluated before and after immersion of samples in a staining solution using a digital spectrophotometer. The mechanical brushing test was evaluated by the roughness test. The flexural strength test used a mechanical testing machine. Purpose: To evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of experimental HEMA-containing and HEMA-free resin adhesives. Materials and Methods: Experimental HEMA-free adhesives containing alternative dimethacrylates (bis-EMA 10 [B10], bis-EMA 30 [B30], PEG 400 [P400], PEG 1000 [P1000], PEG 400 UDMA [UP400]) were formulated and compared with a HEMA-containing adhesive (control). The adhesives were characterized by rheological analysis, polymerization kinetics (PK), water sorption (WS), and solubility (SL) tests. Flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (E) tests were performed under dry or wet conditions (distilled water or 70% ethanol solution). One-way and two-way ANOVA as well as Tukey's test were used to evaluate differences between groups (p < 0.05). Results: The control group showed the lowest viscosity and was the only one with a degree of conversion lower than 50%. The control and the P1000 adhesive showed the statistically significantly highest WS (p < 0.05). The control and the UP400 adhesive showed the highest FS and E, and the dry-stored specimens showed more improved mechanical strength than did the wet-stored specimens (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The physicomechanical properties of some of the HEMA-free adhesives were substantially improved when compared with those of the control, indicating that they could be potential monomers for the development of HEMA-free adhesive systems. To evaluate the properties of experimental mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) resin‐modified materials for root‐end filling procedures, varying their compositions regarding the addition of hydroxiapatite (HA) or dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, with or without chlorhexidine digluconate. White MTA (Angelus, Londrina, Brazil) was used as a reference material. Degree of conversion (DC) was evaluated by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIr) spectroscopy (n = 5). Flowability (n = 3) and radiopacity (n = 3) were evaluated following ISO 6876:2001 methods. For splitting tensile strength analysis, cylindrical samples (n = 10) were subjected to compressive load using a universal testing machine (Instron Corporation, Norwood, MA). Water sorption and solubility tests were performed according to ISO 4049:2009 methods. Calcium ion release and pH analysis (n = 10) were evaluated using a pH meter (Orion, Watsonville, CA). Cytotoxicity (n = 8) of materials extracts was evaluated as cell viability percentage. Statistical analysis was performed using Kolmogorov–Smirnov for normal distribution and data was subjected to one‐way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). Addition of chlorhexidine digluconate reduced DC mean values for experimental materials (<50%). White MTA demonstrated lower flowability (5.3 mm) and higher radiopacity (9.8 mm Al), splitting tensile strength (9.1 MPa), solubility (8.2 μg/mm3), calcium ion release (~26.5 ppm), cytotoxicity (55.2%), and pH mean values (10.8), when compared to experimental materials. All groups demonstrated a decrease in calcium release (<85%) and pH (<13%). Formulation containing HA demonstrated similar pH values after 28 days when compared to white MTA. Evaluated experimental resin‐modified MTA based materials without chlorhexidine digluconate showed satisfactory results for all physico‐chemical properties tested and cytotoxicity. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated properties of resin-luting agents using silane [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM)], phosphoric acid methacrylate (PAM) [mono/ bis(methacryloyloxyethyl (di)hydrogen phosphate)], or carboxylic acid methacrylate (CAM) [mono-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl maleate] as coupling agents between the inorganic and organic phases. Ba-B-Al-Si microparticles (3 μm) and SiO2 nanoparticles (7 nm) were coated with TSPM, PAM, or CAM (control = no filler coating). A Bis-GMA/triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate comonomer was loaded with 60% mass of inorganic fillers. The properties evaluated were degree of CC conversion (DC), flexural strength (σ), and modulus ( E f), Knoop hardness number (KHN), and film thickness (FT). Dispersion/interaction of the particles with the resin phase was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). No significant differences in DC were observed. For σ and E f, TSPM > CAM > Control > PAM. For KHN, TSPM > CAM > PAM = Control. For FT, TSPM < Control < CAM < PAM. The SEM analysis revealed clustering of nanoparticles for all groups and better organic-inorganic phases interaction for TSPM and CAM. The use of TSPM generated agents with improved properties as compared with the acidic methacrylates, with CAM showing better performance than PAM.
