In this study, we tested a response function comprising responses in milk to changes in organic matter digestibility of silages and concentrate supply. We studied the effect of changes in silage digestibility and concentrate supply on milk yield, feed intake, body weight, and methane production using 60 Norwegian Red cows. The experiment was a complete randomized block design comprising 3 periods. The pre-experimental period lasted 20 d and all the cows were fed a common silage for ad libitum intake and concentrate according to yield. Next, response period 1 lasted 17 d and the cows were divided into 2 treatments, where a low-digestible silage (LDS) was fed to half of the cows, and the other half were fed a high-digestible silage (HDS). Both groups were fed silage for ad libitum silage intake. Concentrate was optimized according to the yield and type of silage offered. In this period, the effect of silage was evaluated using a mixed model, including the results from pre-experimental period, with parity as a covariate and animal as a random effect. In response period 2, which lasted 20 d, the concentrate level was evaluated by dividing the silage digestibility treatments further into 3 subgroups. Concentrate was increased by 2 kg of dry matter (DM) per day, decreased by 2 kg of DM/d, or remained unchanged. In response period 1, silage treatments were optimized to obtain similar yields and resulted in a lower concentrate offer to HDS treatment. However, the HDS treatment showed a 3.0 kg of DM/d higher total feed intake due to a higher than expected silage intake. This resulted in 3.5 kg higher energy-corrected milk (ECM). Methane emissions were similar between silage treatments, but HDS showed lower methane per kilogram of DM due to its higher intake. The effect of concentrate supply level and interaction with silage digestibility was evaluated using mixed models, including the results for response period 1, with parity as a covariate and animal as a random effect. The reduction in concentrate offer by 2 kg/d in response period 2 was compensated for by increased 1.3 kg of DM/d of silage intake for HDS, resulting in similar intake (22.1 kg of DM/d and 21.7 kg of DM/d without and with concentrate reduction, respectively) and ECM yields (29.4 and 29 kg of ECM without and with concentrate reduction, respectively). However, concentrate offer reduction could not be compensated for by increased silage intake for LDS and resulted in lower milk yields (27.5 kg of ECM). Increased concentrate showed a higher marginal ECM response (kg of ECM per kg of additional concentrate intake) for LDS (1.8 vs. 3.3 kg of ECM for HDS and LDS, respectively). Thus, the drop in milk yields could be compensated for by increased concentrate offers if LDS are fed. Total methane production increased with increased concentrate intake, regardless of silage digestibility. Methane emissions per unit of milk were affected by total DM intake rather than by changes in silage digestibility and concentrate level. We assessed the interactive effects of gross feed use efficiency (FUE, milk yield/kg DMI) background ("high" = HEFF vs. "low" = LEFF) and graded levels of dietary CP (130, 145, 160, and 175 g/kg DM) on milk production, enteric methane (CH4) emission, and apparent nitrogen use efficiency (NUE, g milk protein nitrogen/g nitrogen intake) with Norwegian Red (NRF) dairy cows. Eight early- to mid-lactation cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment (2 efficiency backgrounds, 4 dietary treatments, and 4 periods each lasting 28 d). The diets were designed to be identical in physical nature and energy density, except for the planned changes in CP, which was a contribution of slight changes in other dietary constituents. We hypothesized that HEFF cows would partition more dietary energy and nitrogen into milk components and, as such, partition less energy in the form of methane and excrete less nitrogen in urine and feces compared with their LEFF contemporaries. We observed no interactions between dietary CP level and efficiency background on DMI, other nutrient intake, NUE, CH4 emission, and its intensity (g CH4/kg milk). Gradually decreasing dietary CP from 175 to 130 g/kg DM did not affect DMI, milk and energy-corrected milk yield, and milk component yields and daily CH4 emission. However, decreasing dietary CP increased NUE and reduced urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion both in quantitative terms and as proportion of nitrogen intake. The HEFF cows showed improved NUE and decreased CH4 emission intensity compared with the LEFF cows. In the absence of interaction effects between efficiency background and dietary CP level, our results suggest that CH4 emission intensity and UN excretions can be reduced by selecting dairy cows with higher FUE and reducing dietary CP level, respectively, independent of one another. Furthermore, UN excretion predictions based on milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and cow BW for NRF cows produced very close estimates to recorded values promising an inexpensive and useful tool for estimating UN excretion under the Nordic conditions where ordinary milk analysis comes with MUN estimates., (© The Author(s) 2018. Two short-term grazing experiments were conducted with Norwegian Red cows. In Exp 1, 24 cows were randomly assigned to one of the following three pasture allocation methods (PAM): weekly pasture allowance (7RG), grazing 1/7 of 7RG each day (1SG), or grazing as 1SG but had access to grazed part of the paddock within one week (1FG). In Exp 2, 7RG was shortened to 5 days (5RG). We hypothesized that PAM will affect sward quality, quantity, intake and production differently. Pasture chemical composition changed with advancing grazing days but were not different between treatments. Pasture intake, milk yield, and methane emission were not affected by PAM. In Exp 1, 7RG cows spent less time on grazing, whereas in Exp 2, 1FG cows spent longer on grazing than others. Patterns observed in sward quality, and behavioural and physiological adaptations of cows to short-term changes in nutrient supply may explain the observed effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementing a pasture diet with crushed rapeseed on enteric methane (CH4) emissions from lactating dairy cows. The experiment was conducted as a crossover design using eight multiparous lactating Norwegian red dairy cows [(means ± s.d.) 548 ± 52 kg bodyweight, 38 ± 14 days in milk and 35 ± 3.7 kg milk/day, at the start of the experiment] maintained in two groups and fed two diets in two periods with the second period extended (18 days) to investigate the persistence of the CH4 response. Four of the eight cows were fitted with a rumen cannula with two cannulated cows assigned to each group. Cows were maintained on pasture (24 h/day) with access to 9 kg/day of concentrate containing 10% crushed rapeseed (RSC) or a control concentrate (CC). Dietary fat content was 63 g/kg dry matter for RSC and 42 g/kg dry matter for CC. The CH4 production was measured for five consecutive days in each period using the sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas technique. Compared with CC, RSC caused a reduction in enteric CH4 emission (221 vs 251 g/day and 8.1 vs 9.0 g/kg of energy-corrected milk), and this response persisted in the extension period. Cows fed RSC had higher milk yield compared with cows fed CC (31.7 vs 29.6 kg/day). However, milk fat and protein content were lower in milk from cows fed RSC than CC. Therefore, energy-corrected milk was not affected by treatment. Feeding RSC lowered milk fat content of palmitic acid compared with CC. The study showed that adding crushed RSC to the diet can be an effective means of reducing CH4 emissions from lactating dairy cows on pasture, without negatively affecting milk production.
