Dry anaerobic digestion (dry-AD) allows high-solid digestion; however, dry-AD application is limited because it is prone to blockage and intermediate inhibition. Here, we reported innovative continuous dry co-digestion systems at both lab and pilot scales. The effects of digestate recirculation ratio, dry mass ratio of cow dung to corn straw (CD:CS), and TS content on the digestion performance were investigated. The effects of the three factors were ranked as follows: TS content > CD:CS > digestate recirculation ratio. The daily biogas production rate reached 0.386 NL/d/g VS with the optimal parameter combination, which was determined to be TS content of 30%, a substrate ratio of 1:3, and a digestate recirculation ratio of 40%. In addition, increasing the CD:CS and TS content increased digestate viscosity, which inhibited biogas production; however, increased abundance of Proteiniphilum and acetoclastic methanogens facilitated biogas production. This study conducted a small scale, push flow, continuous, dry anaerobic digestion experiment using 50% and 60% digestate recirculation ratios to investigate the effects of digestate recirculation ratio on continuous dry anaerobic digestion and to analyze microbial community succession. The results showed that the volumetric biogas production rate could reach 1.6 L/L·d during the 60% digestate recirculation ratio. A slight, initial accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) (maximum concentration 1.6 g/L) was subsequently consumed by the Christensenellaceae R-7 group, and VFA concentrations stabilized at around 20 mg/L. The increased digestate recirculation ratio (60%) promoted both VadinBC27 wastewater-sludge group and Methanobacterium proliferation, and the predominance of those microbial strains may be why VFAs decreased and gas production efficiency improved. Those microbial community changes, fostered by the higher digestate recirculation ratio, are important in continuous dry anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the synergistic effects and regulation strategy of multiple factors for improving methane production in sequencing batch dry anaerobic digestion (SBD-AD) using corn stalks (CS) and cow dung (CD). The regulation of the spray frequency (SF) and inoculum content (IC) significantly improved methane yield, which increased feedstock ratios (FRs) by 12.4-121.3%. Moreover, the relationship between SF and IC produced distinct interaction modes. An FR of 4:6 increased the SF to 2 h for the CD-rich condition, and an FR of 6:4 decreased the SF during a 6 h interval and increased the IC for the CS-rich condition, resulting in increases in methane yield and the conversion efficiency of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Methanogenesis (Methanogens) played a key role in SBD-AD. Ensilage is a commonly used method of preserving energy crops for biogas production. However, aerobic deterioration of silage is an inevitable problem. This study investigated the effect of aerobic deterioration on methane production and microbial community dynamics through anaerobic digestion (AD) of maize stalk silage, following 9days air exposure of silage. After air exposure, hydrolytic activity and methanogenic archaea amount in AD were reduced, decreasing the specific methane yield (SMY); whereas lignocellulose decomposition during exposure improved the degradability of silage in AD and enhanced SMY, partially compensating the dry matter (DM) loss. 29.3% of the DM and 40.7% of methane yield were lost following 0-9days exposure. Metagenomic analysis showed a shift from Clostridia to Bacteroidia and Anaerolineae in AD after silage deterioration; Methanosaetaceae was the dominant methanogenic archaea., (Copyright © 2017. A two-phase digestion system for treating agricultural waste is beneficial for methane production. This study explored the effect of solid content, temperature, and mixing mode on the process of hydrolysis and acidification using rice straw and cow dung launched in non-airtight acidogenic system. The results showed that the substrate could be hydrolyzed efficiently in the initial stage, the hydrolysis coefficient (k) of maximum cellulose and hemicellulose can be increased by 217.9% and 290.5%, respectively, compared with those of middle and last stages. High solid content played a leading role in promoting hydrolysis, resulted in hydrolysate content (sCOD) that was significantly higher than in treatments with low solid content (P<0.01), and led to organic acids accumulation up to 5.8 and 6.7g/L at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Thermophilic temperature stimulated the hydrolysis and acidification of low solid content (P<0.05), and improved organic acid accumulation of high solid content only during the middle stage (P<0.01). Mixing mode was not a major factor, but increasing the mixing time was necessary for organic acid accumulation during the last stage (P<0.05). Silage efficiency is crucial for corn stalk storage in methane production. This study investigated characteristics of dynamic changes in materials and microbes during the silage process of corn stalks from the initial to stable state. We conducted laboratory-scale study of different silage corn stalks, and optimized silage time (0, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30days) for methane production and the endogenous microbial community. The volatile fatty acid concentration increased to 3.00g/L on Day 10 from 0.42g/L on Day 0, and the pH remained below 4.20 from 5.80. The lactic acid concentration (44%) on Day 10 lowered the pH and inhibited the methane yield, which gradually decreased from 229mL/g TS at the initial state (Day 0, 2) to 207mL/g TS at the stable state (Day 10, 20, 30). In this study, the effects of CO 2 -activated/non-activated pyrochars (PCs) from cornstalk, cotton straw, and rice straw on anaerobic digestion (AD) performances and microbial characteristics were investigated. The maximum biogas production rate (2.2 L/L/d) with a methane content of 73% was obtained from the AD with CO 2 -activated cotton straw PC. The activated PC mainly played a strengthening role in the early and middle stages of AD. Specifically, the cornstalk PC could greatly relieve acid inhibition, and cotton straw PC had a significantly positive effect on the regulation of ammonia nitrogen concentration. The rare genera like Verrucomicrobia had obvious differences among groups of AD with PCs. Regarding differential metabolites, cornstalk PC-N 2 displayed a positive correlation with isoleucyl-alanine, while exhibiting a negative correlation with deoxyinosine, and the corresponding relative expression levels were + 3.0 and −2.4, respectively. Abstract Impacts of adding different amounts of cow manure (CM) on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of oat straw (OS) with total solids content (TS) values of 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% was assessed over 50 days using batch experiments. A modified Gompertz model was introduced to predict the methane yield and determine the kinetic parameters. The optimum addition was a 1:2 ratio of CM to the OS added, which resulted in a suitable C/N ratio of 27 and a higher degradation rate of lignocellulose. The best cumulative methane yield of 841.77 mL/g volatile solids added (VS added) was 26.64% greater than that of digesting OS alone. In addition, the amount of CM added produced larger effects than that of changes in the TS. However, higher CM concentrations were found to be inhibitory. This study investigated performance and stability of increasing total solids (TS) content (10–30%) and feedstock-to-inoculum (F/I) ratios (1, 2) on anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural wastes. The cumulative methane yields generally decreased with the increasing TS content except for the TS content of 30% at F/I ratio of 1 and TS content of 10% at F/I ratio of 2. This was consistent with the maximum methane production rate (R max) and rate of the hydrolysis (K h) stage in reactors. The pH, VFAs and NH 4 +-N content were positively correlated with increasing TS contents and F/I ratios. Economic analysis results indicated the net present value generally increased with increasing TS contents and TS content of 30% at F/I ratio of 1 had the highest net present value (5.7 million US$) and internal rate of return (41.9%).
