Cellulose paper has strong potential as an analytical platform owing to its unique characteristics. In the present study, we investigated a procedure for functionalizing the surface of cellulose paper by dip-coating a mixture of a functional polymer and a perfluoroalkylated surfactant (surfactant 1). The functional polymer comprised a mixture of methyl methacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate monomers. The monomer ratio in the functional polymer affected the hydrophilicity and water absorbance of the cellulose paper after dip-coating. Furthermore, the presence of surfactant 1 during dip-coating promoted the surface segregation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) moieties in the polymer, which enhanced the hydrophilicity, prevented nonspecific protein adsorption, and maintained the water absorbance of the dip-coated cellulose paper. Dip-coating with another functional polymer containing biotin groups produced a cellulose paper with a biotin-decorated surface in a one-step procedure. The displayed biotin groups immobilized avidin on the surface, and the PEG moieties in the polymer prevented nonspecific protein adsorption. We then immobilized a thrombin-binding DNA aptamer on the avidin-immobilized cellulose paper to prepare a paper-based analytical device. It is possible to visualize thrombin in model solutions and serum using the paper-based analytical device.

Fluorescent nanoparticles are widely exploited as probes in cell tracking, drug delivery systems and high-performance security devices nowadays. Herein, we report the synthesis of novel 7-acryloxycoumarin (7-AC) through modification reaction of 7-hydroxycoumarin with acryloyl chloride and its copolymerization with methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate to produce epoxy-functionalized fluorescent polymer nanoparticles through emulsion polymerization. Chemical modification of cellulose pulp papers with the as-prepared fluorescent latex nanoparticles was also assessed. Spherical nanoparticles with average particle size of 40-93 nm and their diffusion into cellulosic fibers with excellent wetting and coating were monitored. Fluorimetery analysis demonstrated that immobilization of 7-AC into the hydrophobic acrylic copolymer substrate enhanced its emission intensity significantly with respect to its molecularly solution due to the elimination of unwanted environmental effects and non-radiative processes such as probable internal conversions. The obtained products exhibited intensified fluorescence emission with potentiality of being used in anticounterfeiting inks and security documents.

A paper/ poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid CD-like microfluidic SpinChip integrated with DNA probe-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) nanosensors was developed for multiplex quantitative LAMP detection (mqLAMP). This approach can simply and effectively address a major challenging problem of multiplexing in current LAMP methods.

Xylanase of Melanocarpus albomyces IIS 68 was immobilized on Eudragit L-100. The latter is a copolymer of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate and is a pH-sensitive smart polymer. The immobilization was carried out by gentle adsorption and an immobilization efficiency of 0.82 was obtained. The enzyme did not leach off the polymer even in the presence of 1 M NaCl and 50% ethylene glycol. The K(m) of the enzyme changed from 5.9 mg ml(-1) to 9.1 mg ml(-1) upon immobilization. The V(max) of the immobilized enzyme showed an increase from 90.9 micro mol ml(-1) min(-1) (for the free enzyme) to 111.1 micro mol ml(-1) min(-1). The immobilized enzyme could be reused up to ten times without impairment of the xylanolytic activity. The immobilized enzyme was also evaluated for its application in pre-bleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulp.
