This paper presents the first investigation of the adsorption performance of methylene blue by the nitro-functionalized metal-organic framework (MIL-88B-NO 2 ). MIL-88B-NO 2 has a specific surface area of 836.0 m 2 /g, which is 109.8 % higher than MIL-88B. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue is 383.6 mg/g, which is 68.2 % higher than that of MIL-88B. This phenomenon can be attributed to the great increase in specific surface area and the introduction of nitro-functional groups. However, its microcrystalline nature makes it difficult to remove in practical applications and quickly causes secondary pollution. Therefore, the composite of MIL-88B-NO 2 and calcium alginate (CA) to form aerogel maintains the inherent properties of the two materials and makes it easy to recycle. The utmost adsorption capability of MIL-88B-NO 2 /CA-2 aerogel is 721.0 mg/g. Compared with MIL-88B-NO 2 , the adsorption performance of MIL-88B-NO 2 /CA-2 aerogel is further improved by 88.0 %. The higher adsorption capacity of the adsorbent may be due to the synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, π-π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, metal coordination effect, and physicochemical properties. Egg white protein is a non-toxic and biodegradable biopolymer that forms a gel easily via simple thermal denaturation treatment. A novel aerogel on the basis of egg white protein crosslinked with graphene oxide was prepared via a facile freeze-drying method. The structure and physicochemical characteristics of the aerogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The adsorption properties of the aerogels were investigated by studying the influencing factors such as the solution pH, dose, temperature and contact time. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue onto the aerogels was tested, whose maximum adsorption capacity, calculated by the Langmuir isotherm equation, reached 91.7 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Highlights: A new gelatin composite was used to remove methylene blue. The adsorbent was composed of carbon nanotubes, a metal–organic framework and gelatin. The adsorbent had a simple preparation process and was friendly to the environment. The fixation of carbon nanomaterials with gelatin as the substrate avoided secondary pollution. Using carbon nanotubes as the intermediate improved the adsorption capacity. A novel gelatin-based functionalized carbon nanotubes@metal–organic framework (F-CNTs@MOF@Gel) adsorbent was prepared by the green and simple method for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Cu-BTC (also known as HKUST-1) was selected as the MOF type. F-CNTs@Cu-BTC particles were fixed by gelatin, thus avoiding the secondary pollution of carbon nanomaterial particles to the environment. CNTs were used as the connecting skeleton to make more effective adsorption sites exposed on the surface of the internal pore structure of the adsorbent. In this paper, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGA) and BET analysis methods were used to characterize the new adsorbent. The effects of time, temperature, pH, dosage and initial concentration on the adsorption process were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption mechanism was further analyzed by several commonly used kinetic and isotherm models, and the reliability of several fitting models was evaluated by the Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and Hannan information criterion (HIC). After five regeneration experiments, the adsorbent still had 61.23% adsorption capacity. In general, the new adsorbent studied in this paper has an optimistic application prospect. In this paper, cobalt alginate/graphene oxide (CA/GO) aerogel composites were prepared by wet spinning and vacuum freezing. The cobalt ion only ion‐pairs with the carboxyl ion in the alginate, and other groups such as hydroxyl were not combined with cobalt ions, generating free hydroxyl, and thus improving the adsorption performance and recyclability of the composite material. The adsorption properties of CA/GO aerogels gradually improved with the increase of pH. The maximum adsorption capacity of CA/GO aerogel at 298 K was 294.18 mg.g−1, and the adsorption process of methylene blue (MB) on CA/GO aerogel conformed to Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo‐second‐order model. The adsorption of MB on CA/GO is mainly attributed to electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and π‐π interaction. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption process was both spontaneous and exothermic. After the CA/GO aerogel was reused for 5 times, the removal rate reached as high as 80.256 %. Compared with other adsorbents, the prepared adsorbent was proven to be provided with good removal capacity for MB, and expected to be widely applied to the adsorption treatment of MB wastewater. [Display omitted] The phenomenon that calcium alginate does not exhibit high adsorption capacity as a carrier material has not been reasonably explained or solved. In this paper, a new viewpoint that the orbital energy level of metal ions and the binding degree of the α-l-guluronate and β-d-mannuronate units affect the adsorption performance of the composite was innovatively proposed. Taking barium alginate (BA) as an example, the possibility of replacing calcium alginate is discussed. Barium alginate/graphene oxide (BA/GO) membranes and three-dimensional (3D) barium alginate-bentonite-graphene oxide derived (3D-BA) hydrogels were prepared by vacuum freeze-drying to remove methylene blue. The structure and morphology of the prepared adsorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of adsorbent dosage, doping ratio, temperature, contact time, pH value and initial dye concentration on the adsorption performance of BA composites were investigated. The adsorption capacities of the BA/GO and 3D-BA materials were 1011.3 and 710.3 mg/g, respectively. The BA/GO membrane exhibited stable filtration performance against high concentrations of dyes. Benefiting from the strong interaction between bentonite, sodium alginate and Ba2+, the 3D-BA hydrogel showed higher thermal stability and better adsorption efficiency than other materials. The Elovich kinetic model and Sips equation can appropriately describe the adsorption process. The results show that barium alginate is a better carrier material than calcium alginate. Zirconium alginate/graphene oxide (ZA/GO) hydrogel spheres were prepared by crosslinking sodium alginate and GO with Zr4+. Then Zr4+ on the surface of the ZA/GO substrate acted as the metal nucleation site of the UiO-67 crystal and interacted with the organic ligand biphenyl 4-4′-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC) to make UiO-67 grow in situ on the surface of the ZA/GO hydrogel sphere by the hydrothermal method. The BET surface areas of ZA/GO, ZA/UiO-67, and ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel spheres were 1.29, 47.71, and 89.33 m2/g respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of ZA/GO, ZA/UiO-67, and ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel spheres for methylene blue (MB) at room temperature (298 K) were 145.08, 307.49, and 1105.23 mg/g respectively. The kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption process of MB on the ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel sphere was consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Isotherm analysis showed that MB was adsorbed on ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel spheres as a single layer. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption process of MB on the ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel sphere was exothermic and spontaneous. Adsorption of MB on ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel spheres is mainly dependent on π-π bond, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bond. After 8 cycles, ZA/GO/UiO-67 aerogel spheres still showed high adsorption performance and good reuse ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
