The increasing volume of wastewater from fish farming poses a serious environmental threat. This study investigated a novel treatment method for butter catfish (Ompok bimaculatus) wastewater using a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) integrated with the water fern Azolla microphylla. The system was effectiveness in removing pollutants like electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate was evaluated. Additionally, the electricity generation capabilities were measured. The CW-MFC system achieved significant removal rates: 67.65% for EC, 61.67% for TDS, 100% for ammonium, 75.00% for nitrate, 81.25% for nitrite, and 70.00% for phosphate. Furthermore, the system generated a maximum open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 690±90 mV, a current density (CD) of 7.29±0.43 mA/m³and a power density (PD) of 0.37±0.04 mW/m³. Analysis of the microbial community revealed a diverse root consortium dominated by bacterial genera including Phreatobacter, Emticicia and Rhodobacter, along with fungal genera such as Strelitziana, Ramularia, Cladosporium,Trichomerium, Cercospora, Erythrobasidium and Fusarium. These findings suggest that CW-MFC systems integrated with A. microphylla offer a promising approach for sustainable and efficient treatment of wastewater from catfish farming while simultaneously generating bioelectricity.

The contamination of the environment by antibiotics has become a serious problem, supported by abundant scientific evidence of its negative impact on both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Therefore, it is crucial to intensify research efforts towards developing effective and efficient processes for removing antibiotics from the aquatic environment. In this study, a bacterial consortium capable of breaking down penicillin was employed in a ceramic separator microbial fuel cell (MFC) to generate electricity. The consortium’s properties such as laccase activity, penicillin removal and microbial structure were studied. The SF11 bacterial consortium, with a laccase activity of 6.16±0.04 U/mL, was found to be effective in breaking down penicillin. The highest rate of penicillin removal (92.15±0.27%) was achieved when the SF11 consortium was incubated at 30 °C for 48 hours. Furthermore, when used as a whole-cell biocatalyst in a low-cost upflow MFC, the Morganella morganii-rich SF11 consortium demonstrated the highest voltage and power density of 964.93±1.86 mV and 0.56±0.00 W/m3, respectively. These results suggest that the SF11 bacterial consortium has the potential for use in ceramic separator MFCs for the removal of penicillin and electricity generation.

The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that harnesses microbial metabolism to convert chemical energy into bio-electrical energy. Extensive research has demonstrated its efficacy in both wastewater treatment and power generation applications. This study focused on the integration of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) with a biocathode constructed using the oxidoreductase-producing bacterium Bacillus sp. MCO22 and rice straw as a cost-effective substrate. The MFC utilized palm oil mill effluent (POME) as a chemical energy source for electricity generation in the anodic chamber. The ability of the MFC was evaluated by monitoring biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) activity and electrochemical properties. Post-operation, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal were measured. The results revealed that the MFC with the BOD-based cathode achieved a maximum current density and power density of 0.58±0.01 A/m2 and 0.17±0.00 W/m2, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibited high COD and color removal rates of 95.10±0.10% and 98.53±0.33%, respectively, without requiring an external power supply. This study presents novel insights into utilizing a BOD-producing bacterium as a whole-cell biocatalyst on the MFC cathodic surface for both electricity generation and agricultural wastewater treatment.

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a green device that utilizes chemical energy in organic materials to generate electricity. The low-cost electrode used in this study was made from agricultural waste, coconut shells. The electrochemical properties were improved by combining oxidizing agents and microwave heating processes. The modified coconut shell electrode outperformed virgin biochar by 30.89-fold (230.13±10.11 m2/g). The maximum open-circuit voltage, current density, and power density are respectively 995.00±5.00 mV, 841.67±14.43 mA/m2, and 283.42±9.67 mW/m2. This study demonstrated that modified coconut shell biochar could be used as a low-cost alternative electrode for electricity generation.
