Considering the increasing amounts of renewable energy generation and energy storage required to meet ambitious environmental goals, it is clear that the next generation of power grids will be dominated by converter-connected devices. In addition, the increasing share of loads connected via power electronics and the general transition to non-synchronous grids with distributed generators make dc microgrids an attractive future alternative. However, achieving optimal utilization of distributed generators in such cases is a complex task, as the performance depends on both the grid and control design. In this paper, we consider such a case where the optimal utilization of distributed generators is achieved by optimal power sharing while taking into account the grid topology, the available generators, and the way they are controlled. For the latter, we consider a droop-based decentralized control scheme whose primary objective is to achieve voltage regulation in the allowable operating range. A novel mixed-integer optimization approach is proposed to identify the optimal converter size and location in the network so that the microgrid can operate safely and with optimal use of the available resources. Different control strategies for microgrid applications have been developed in the last decade. In order to enhance flexibility, scalability and reliability, special attention has been given to control organisations based on distributed communication infrastructures. Among these strategies, the implementation of consensus protocol stands out to cooperatively steer multi-agent systems (i.e., distributed generators), which is justified by its benefits, such as plug and play capability and enhanced resilience against communication failures. However, as the consensus protocol has a long trajectory of development in different areas of knowledge including multidisciplinary subjects, it may be a challenge to collect all the relevant information for its application in an emerging field. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to provide the fundamentals of multi-agent systems and consensus protocol to the electrical engineering community, and an overview of its application to control systems for microgrids. The fundamentals of consensus protocol herein cover the concepts, formulations, steady-state and stability analysis for leaderless and leader-following consensus problems, in both continuous- and discrete-time. The overview of the applications summarises the main contributions achieved with this technique in the literature concerning microgrids, as well as the associated challenges and trends. Beyond the impacting presence of nonlinear loads, low-voltage microgrids also experience low energy efficiency and resonance phenomena when operating interconnected to a distribution grid that suffers from distorted voltages. This article proposes a model-free control strategy capable of coordinating inverters existing within a dispatchable microgrid, allowing to operate it as a single-controllable entity that behaves like a resistor at selected harmonic frequencies. Such resistive shaping uses a centralized control architecture to steer inverters to distributively compensate reactive and harmonic currents, supporting active current sharing. Consequently, the microgrid point-of-common-coupling operates with a high power factor when the grid imposes distorted voltages. Additionally, if resonant components exist, the strategy supports harmonic resonance damping, which minimizes deterioration of voltage quality. For instance, comparative results show that, for the considered scenario, the proposed resistive shaping damps resonances up to 50% better than a previous approach that compensates harmonics using sinusoidal current synthesis. Simulation results carried out on a three-phase low-voltage microgrid testbench, considering three inverters, demonstrate the abovementioned capabilities of the proposed approach. Experimental results based on a single-phase microgrid prototype comprising two inverters with two linear loads and one nonlinear load validate the applicability of the method to real-life implementations. Low-voltage grid-connected microgrids rely on the exploitation of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) in order to feed loads and to achieve bidirectional power flow controllability at their point of common coupling (PCC) with the upstream grid. However, adverse operational conditions, such as the existence of DERs of different operation natures, DERs of non-equal power ratings, as well as the occurrence of non-steady and non-sinusoidal grid voltage scenarios, bring complications to microgrid energy management. Consequently, control strategies employed to coordinate DERs in dispatchable microgrids need to be resilient to such non-ideal conditions. Hence, this paper demonstrates that a multi-purpose strategy, so-called the Generalized Current-Based Control (GCBC) approach, is capable of steering DERs under such adverse operational scenarios, ensuring proportional current sharing among them while also regulating the microgrid power dispatchability at the PCC. The discussions are supported by an extensive experimental validation on a laboratory-scale single-phase microgrid prototype, demonstrating that the GCBC approach allows DERs of different operational natures to be coordinated, respecting their power ratings, and allowing the single-controllable microgrid to endure operation under distorted voltages and support voltage ride-through conditions. Most of the distributed control strategies for grid-connected power converters are droop-based approaches composed of converters driven in voltage-control mode, based on local and shared data with adjacent units. They are usually combined with consensus protocols to deal with the trade-off between power sharing accuracy and voltage/frequency regulation. To achieve the desired results these control systems usually incorporate other techniques and need to take into account details of primary control dynamic. Additionally, power flow control and current unbalance compensation at the PCC are rarely addressed in such approaches. Contrariwise, the centralized control strategy power-based control has been successful in achieving these functionalities. It is oriented to a set point selection to the whole system, considering converters driven in current-control mode and a central converter in voltage-control mode. However, the dependence on centralized communication network in this method still requires improvement. Thereby, the complementary features of both strategies are combined herein in the consensus power-based control, based on a master/slave peer-to-peer integration using sparse communication. This model-free approach provides all aforementioned benefits to the grid without any other technique. Implementation complexity and costs are decreased, while the flexibility and reliability are enhanced. The presence of single-phase distributed generators unevenly injecting active power in three-phase microgrids may create undesired upstream current unbalance. Consequently, voltage asymmetry and even active power curtailment may occur in such networks with negative economic impact. Thus, this paper proposes an optimal multiobjective approach to regulate the active and reactive power delivered by distributed generators driven by a three-layer hierarchical control technique in low-voltage microgrids. This method does not require previous knowledge of network parameters. The multiobjective algorithm is implemented in the secondary level achieving optimal dispatch in terms of maximizing the active power generation, as well as minimizing the reactive power circulation and current unbalance. By the existence of a utility interface three-phase converter placed at the point-of-common-coupling, the proposed control can regulate the power circulating among the microgrid phases, and the microgrid structure can withstand grid-connected and islanded operating modes. The path for interphase power circulation through the DC-link of the utility interface allows the multiobjective algorithm to achieve better results in terms of generation and compensation compared to the system without utility interface. The fifth paper [[5]], entitled "AC-DC Converters for Electrolyzer Applications: State of the Art and Future Challenges", presents a comprehensive review of currently used AC-DC converters for alkaline and proton exchange membrane electrolyzers in power grid or wind energy conversion systems. It includes a silicon-controlled rectifier forced shutdown control strategy and a three-loop control strategy, which greatly reduces the silicon-controlled rectifier shutdown time and ensures the reliability of local load power supply.
