Multiple length scales are involved in the development of traumatic brain injury, where the global mechanics of the head level are responsible for local physiological impairment of brain cells. In this study, a relation between the mechanical state at the tissue level and the cellular level is established. A model has been developed that is based on pathological observations of local axonal injury. The model contains axons surrounding an obstacle (e.g., a blood vessel or a brain soma). The axons, which are described by an anisotropic fiber-reinforced material model, have several physically different orientations. The results of the simulations reveal axonal strains being higher than the applied maximum principal tissue strain. For anisotropic brain tissue with a relatively stiff inclusion, the relative logarithmic strain increase is above 60%. Furthermore, it is concluded that individual axons oriented away from the main axonal direction at a specific site can be subjected to even higher axonal strains in a stress-driven process, e.g., invoked by inertial forces in the brain. These axons can have a logarithmic strain of about 2.5 times the maximum logarithmic strain of the axons in the main axonal direction over the complete range of loading directions. The results indicate that cellular level heterogeneities have an important influence on the axonal strain, leading to an orientation and location-dependent sensitivity of the tissue to mechanical loads. Microstructure evolution is largely dominated by the internal stress fields that appear upon the appearance of inhomogeneous structures in a material. The hardening behaviour of metals physically originates from such a complex microstructure evolution. As deformation proceeds, statistically homogeneous distributions of dislocations in grains become unstable, which constitutes the driving force for the development of a pronounced dislocation substructure. The dislocation structure already appears at early stages of deformation due to the statistical trapping of dislocations. Cell walls contain dislocation dipoles and multipoles with high dislocation densities and enclose cell-interior regions with a considerably smaller dislocation density. The presence and evolution of such a dislocation arrangement in the material influence the mechanical response of the material and is commonly associated with the transient hardening after strain path changes. This contribution introduces a micromechanical continuum model of the dislocation cell structure based on the physics of the dislocation interactions. The approximation of the internal stress field in such a microstructure and the impact on the macroscopic mechanical response are the main items investigated here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Materials like paper, consisting of a network of natural fibers, exposed to variations in moisture, undergo changes in geometrical and mechanical properties. This behavior is particularly important for understanding the hygro-mechanical response of sheets of paper in applications like digital printing. A two-dimensional microstructural model of a fibrous network is therefore developed to upscale the hygro-expansion of individual fibers, through their interaction, to the resulting overall expansion of the network. The fibers are modeled with rectangular shapes and are assumed to be perfectly bonded where they overlap. For realistic networks, the number of bonds is large, and the network is geometrically so complex that discretizing it by conventional, geometry-conforming, finite elements is cumbersome. The combination of a level-set and XFEM formalism enables the use of regular, structured grids in order to model the complex microstructural geometry. In this approach, the fibers are described implicitly by a level-set function. In order to represent the fiber boundaries in the fibrous network, an XFEM discretization is used together with a Heaviside enrichment function. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach successfully captures the hygro-expansive properties of the network with fewer degrees-of-freedom compared to classical FEM, preserving desired accuracy.
