The skin is the first line of defense for protecting internal tissues against external perturbations, such as physical/chemical stressors, UV irradiation, and pathogenic microorganisms. Of the many factors that impact overall skin integrity, nutritional status plays a crucial role in modulating the action of cutaneous immune responses. In particular, a deficiency in certain micronutrients can cause impairment of innate and adaptive immunity, leading to increased susceptibility to infection and diseases of the skin. Here, we describe the influences of select micronutrients on the immune system, and discuss their significance in certain skin diseases.
