Abstract

The article highlights tribal women who entered the armed forces as nurses during the 1800s. It notes that the Daughters of the American Revolution Hospital Corps hired four Native American Indian Catholic nuns to serve as nurses during the Spanish-American War. The nurses are said to be members of the Lakota Tribe from Fort Berthold, South Dakota. Their exemplification of the Native warrior traditions during their time of service is also discussed, which includes strength, honor, and pride.
