Abstract Effects of mitigation measures in agriculture on abating eutrophication are difficult to evaluate by assessments of catchment monitoring data. Estimates of improved water quality by specific agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) are therefore often dependent on simulation modeling. A main objective was thus to assess the probable reductions in total phosphorus (TP) loading achieved by implemented agricultural mitigation measures. The case-study site was a catchment in southeastern Norway. Simulation modeling was conducted by use of The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The aim of this present study was to understand the model uncertainty associated both with calibration/validation (baseline) and TP loading scenarios based on BMP. The modeled decrease in TP loading by the set of implemented BMPs was assessed by comparing simulated baseline output with output where the set of abatement actions were removed. The model was set up for the years 2006–2010 and calibrated against observed monitoring data, including daily discharge, sediment- and TP fluxes. Model simulations were performed including and excluding the implemented set of mitigation measures. The simulated set of mitigation measures include decrease in amount of phosphorus fertilization, establishment of vegetated buffer strips along streams and constructed wetlands in the water courses, no autumn tilling and removal of point TP sources from scattered dwellings. Model calibration and uncertainty estimation are performed using an algorithm for Sequential Uncertainty Fitting (SUFI2; ver. 2). Probabilistic risk for given magnitudes of increased TP loading if existing BMPs were not implemented was assessed. Using this novel approach it was possible to state, with a 80th percentile confidence level, that the average annual TP loading would have been about 26% higher if no mitigation measures were implemented in the catchment. This was possible to assess even though the difference between baseline and BMP scenario was not significant. Nutrient fluxes in stream basins need to be controlled to achieve good water quality status. In stream basins with intensive agricultural activities, nutrients predominantly come from diffuse sources. Therefore, best management practices (BMPs) are increasingly implemented to reduce nutrient input to streams. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of vegetated filter strip (VFS) application as an agricultural BMP. For this purpose, SWAT is chosen, a semi-distributed water quality assessment model that works at the watershed scale, and applied on the Nif stream basin, a small-sized basin in Western Turkey. The model is calibrated with an automated procedure against measured monthly discharge data. Nutrient loads for each sub-basin are estimated considering basin-wide data on chemical fertilizer and manure usage, population data for septic tank effluents and information about the land cover. Nutrient loads for 19 sub-basins are predicted on an annual basis. Average total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads are estimated as 47.85 t/yr and 13.36 t/yr for the entire basin. Results show that VFS application in one sub-basin offers limited retention of nutrients and that a selection of 20-m filter width is most effective from a cost-benefit perspective. The urban environment modifies the hydrologic cycle resulting in increased runoff rates, volumes, and peak flows. Green infrastructure, which uses best management practices (BMPs), is a natural system approach used to mitigate the impacts of urbanization onto stormwater runoff. Patterns of stormwater runoff from urban environments are complex, and it is unclear how efficiently green infrastructure will improve the urban water cycle. These challenges arise from issues of scale, the merits of BMPs depend on changes to small-scale hydrologic processes aggregated up from the neighborhood to the urban watershed. Here, we use a hyper-resolution (1 m), physically based hydrologic model of the urban hydrologic cycle with explicit inclusion of the built environment. This model represents the changes to hydrology at the BMP scale (~1 m) and represents each individual BMP explicitly to represent response over the urban watershed. Our study varies both the percentage of BMP emplacement and their spatial location for storm events of increasing intensity in an urban watershed. We develop a metric of effectiveness that indicates a nonlinear relationship that is seen between percent BMP emplacement and storm intensity. Roads and developed land can alter hydrologic pathways, cause erosion, and increase pollution to nearby waters. Best management practices (BMPs) are commonly used to reduce adverse effects of post-construction runoff. This study is focused on providing performance and cost information for optimally selecting the BMPs for retaining post-construction stormwater on site. The performance of BMPs was simulated numerically using an idealized catchment in an urban setting environment. The cost of construction and maintenance of these BMPs were based on unit price. The considered BMPs were bioswale, infiltration trench, and vegetated filter strip. The effects of vegetated covers such as turf or prairie grass on stormwater runoff reduction of linear projects with and without BMPs were also evaluated. Finally, based on construction cost, maintenance costs, and performance of BMPs, recommendations are made to help decision makers in implementing the optimal BMP to control stormwater runoff for highways in urban areas. The formation of hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico can be traced to agricultural watersheds in the Midwestern United States that are artificially drained in order to make the land suitable for agriculture. A number of best management practices (BMPs) have been introduced to improve the water quality in the region but their relative effectivenss of these BMPs in reducing nutrient load has not been properly quantified. In order to determine the BMPs useful for reducing nutrient discharge from a tile drained watershed, a Soil andWater Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was calibrated and validated for water flow and nitrate load using experimental data from the Little Vermillion River (LVR) watershed in east-central Illinois. Then, the performance of four common BMPs (reduced tillage, cover crop, filter strip and wetlands) were evaluated. For BMPs, the usage of rye as cover crop performed the best in reducing nitrate discharge from the watershed as a single BMP, with an average annual nitrate load reduction of 54.5%. Combining no tillage and rye cover crops had varying results over the period simulated, but the average nitrate reduction was better than using rye cover crops with conventional tillage, with the average annual nitrate discharge decreased by 60.5% (an improvement of 13% over rye only). Best management practices (BMPs) and low impact development (LID) practices are increasingly being used as stormwater management techniques to reduce the impacts of urban development on hydrology and water quality. To assist planners and decision-makers at various stages of development projects (planning, implementation, and evaluation), user-friendly tools are needed to assess the effectiveness of BMPs and LID practices. This study describes a simple tool, the Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment-LID (L-THIA-LID), which is enhanced with additional BMPs and LID practices, improved approaches to estimate hydrology and water quality, and representation of practices in series (meaning combined implementation). The tool was used to evaluate the performance of BMPs and LID practices individually and in series with 30 years of daily rainfall data in four types of idealized land use units and watersheds (low density residential, high density residential, industrial, and commercial). Simulation results were compared with the results of other published studies. The simulated results showed that reductions in runoff volume and pollutant loads after implementing BMPs and LID practices, both individually and in series, were comparable with the observed impacts of these practices. The L-THIA-LID 2.0 model is capable of assisting decision makers in evaluating environmental impacts of BMPs and LID practices, thereby improving the effectiveness of stormwater management decisions. The S191 basin contributes significant phosphorous (P) loads to Lake Okeechobee, Florida (the Lake). This basin is located northeast of the Lake, and extensive nonstructural and structural Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been implemented to reduce total P (TP) loads. The Davie Dairy Best Available Technologies (Davie Dairy BAT) and The Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area (Taylor Creek STA) are two of the structural BMP projects. The Taylor Creek STA reduces P loads to the Lake through detention, plant growth and soil sorption. The Davie Dairy BAT project reduces the P loads to the Lake through detention and chemical treatment. The objective of this study was to develop a model tool to simulate the structural BMP projects' daily flow rate and long term treatment volume under different weather scenarios. The MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 coupled model was selected for this study because of its capability to simulate the dynamic exchanges between the overland flow plain, groundwater system, and the river system. This study developed, calibrated and validated a MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 coupled model for this basin. The simulated daily flow rates at structure S191 compared favorably with measured values for a calibration and validation time period. Simulated groundwater levels for calibration were reasonably consistent with the measured groundwater levels. The calibrated and validated model was applied for long term simulation to evaluate the two structural BMP projects' long term treatment performance, annual average TP load reduction, using the observed hydrology and the water quality data. In recent years, riparian buffers have become known as one of the most effective best management practices for nonpoint-source pollution. However, establishment of riparian buffer systems with respect to plant species and their position in the buffer zone has not been investigated due to lack of efficient evaluation methods for the analysis of water quality improvement with established riparian buffers. To solve this problem, the SWAT-REMM prototype version was developed by researchers in Canada. In the SWAT-REMM prototype version, many riparian-related input parameters are not directly read from the local input data. Thus, a SWAT-REMM enhancement was developed by improving three major limitations of the prototype version of SWAT-REMM: (1) riparian buffers at designated reaches in the watersheds, (2) riparian buffers using local soil properties at the riparian buffer zone along reaches, and (3) multiple weather stations in a larger-scale watershed. The enhanced SWAT-REMM version was applied to the Bonggok watershed in Korea. This study investigated riparian buffers with different widths (10 m, 5 m, and 1 m) along the slope. Total nitrogen reduction ranged from 14.8% to 54.0% in each catchment for 10 m widths. Total nitrogen reduction ranged from 6.9% to 31.6% in each catchment for 1 m widths. The reduction efficiency was not simply proportional to the width of buffers. This study evaluated the enhanced SWAT-REMM simulation of water quality improvement. Based on this research, the enhanced SWAT-REMM can be used to evaluate water quality improvement by riparian buffers at various watersheds worldwide using local data. In particular, simulation of riparian buffers at user-designated reaches in a watershed enables simulation of riparian buffers in watersheds experiencing frequent flooding where no riparian buffers can be established. Identification of critical source areas (CSAs) of pollution in a watershed is important for effective implementation of best management practices (BMPs). Process-based watershed models are often used for this purpose. One of the main inputs to these models is the spatially explicit soils data. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the use of two commonly used soil data sets, the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) and the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) data, can lead to differences in location of CSAs of sediment. A watershed model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), in combination with the Tukey-Kramer test was used for locating CSAs in the Fish River watershed located in coastal Alabama. The model was calibrated and validated using flow data from a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gauging station located within the watershed. The locations of the CSAs of sediment were analyzed at subwatershed and hydrologic response unit (HRU) levels. Results show that the locations of the CSAs were different for the two soil data sets. The locations of the CSAs varied at both subwatershed and HRU levels. The use of STATSGO soil data resulted in higher soil erodibility factor and surface runoff. As a result, higher sediment yield was obtained from the use of the STATSGO data as compared with the sediment yield obtained from the use of the SSURGO data. Therefore, for accurate identification of CSAs of sediment (and potentially other pollutants) and for effective implementation of economically feasible BMPs, it is important to use the most detailed spatial data set available. There has been a steady shift towards modeling and model-based approaches as primary methods of assessing watershed response to hydrologic inputs and land management, and of quantifying watershed-wide best management practice (BMP) effectiveness. Watershed models often require some degree of calibration and validation to achieve adequate watershed and therefore BMP representation. This is, however, only possible for gauged watersheds. There are many watersheds for which there are very little or no monitoring data available, thus the question as to whether it would be possible to extend and/or generalize model parameters obtained through calibration of gauged watersheds to ungauged watersheds within the same region. This study explored the possibility of developing regionalized model parameter sets for use in ungauged watersheds. The study evaluated two regionalization methods: global averaging, and regression-based parameters, on the SWAT model using data from priority watersheds in Arkansas. Resulting parameters were tested and model performance determined on three gauged watersheds. Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies (NS) for stream flow obtained using regression-based parameters (0.53-0.83) compared well with corresponding values obtained through model calibration (0.45-0.90). Model performance obtained using global averaged parameter values was also generally acceptable (0.4 ≤ NS ≤ 0.75). Results from this study indicate that regionalized parameter sets for the SWAT model can be obtained and used for making satisfactory hydrologic response predictions in ungauged watersheds. Cropland best management practice recommendations often combine tillage and nutrient application improvements to reduce nutrient losses with surface runoff. This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to evaluate nutrient runoff yields from conventional-till and no-till management practices with surface and deep-banded fertilizer application in a sorghum-soybean rotation. The model was calibrated for three field plots (0.39 to 1.46 ha) with different combinations of practices and validated for three field plots (0.40 to 0.56 ha) during 2001 to 2004. Daily performance of the calibrated SWAT model in simulating total N for all treatments was satisfactory for median-based Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (Ef* of 0.54 to 0.64), good to very good for percent bias (PBIAS of 31% to 7%), and satisfactory to good for median-based root mean square error to observations standard deviation ratio (RSR* of 0.72 to 0.62). Performance was slightly lower and more variable for total P calibration (Ef* of 0.42 to 0.62, PBIAS of-48% to 2%, and RSR* of 0.76 to 0.62). Monthly statistics improved for total P runoff yield compared to daily performance, but changed little for total N runoff yields, probably due to the stronger influence of outliers in the N data. Based on validation results, SWAT was more robust in simulating total N runoff yields from the treatment with less soil disturbance (NT/SB) and total P for the two treatments with more soil disturbance (NT/DB and TILL). A major concern was that SWAT predicted greater annual average total N runoff yields for no-till treatments than for tilled treatments, which was contrary to measured values at the study site. This reinforces a fundamental research issue that tillage system effects on nutrient losses are still very much uncertain and thus may not be properly modeled. The SWAT model generally underpredicted monthly total N yields for all treatments in the higher-precipitation months of May and June and overpredicted total N and total P yields from September through November. Calibration for N and P resulted in identical calibration parameters for NPERCO (1.0), RSDCO (0.05), BIOMIX (0.2), PPERCO (10), PHOSKD (175), and UBP (50) regardless of tillage practice or fertilizer application method. Together with results that calibrated parameters for runoff (CN, Ksat, AWC) and erosion (Cmin) differed among the treatments, this study found that differences in nutrient yields among tillage and fertilizer management may be adequately modeled with SWAT by calibrating runoff and sediment yields only, and that further calibration of nutrient parameters may not improve model results. Pollutant loading from storm runoff is considered to be an important component of nonpoint source pollution in urban areas. In developing countries, because of the accelerated urbanization and motorization, storm runoff pollution has become a challenge for improving aquatic environmental quality. An effective storm runoff management plan needs to be developed, and questions concerning how much and which proportion of a storm should be treated need to be answered. In this study, a model is developed to determine the fraction of storm runoff that needs to be treated to meet the discharge standard within a given probability. The model considers that the pollutants can be mobilized during the early stage of a storm. The model is applied to a field study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in road runoff in Beijing, China. In this case, the probability that the PAH load will be mobilized with suspended sediments by the earlier portion of the flush is 73%. Given the high PAH loading in the study area and the referenced discharge standard, the probability that the entire runoff should be captured and treated is 94%. Thus, urban planners need to consider treatment systems for the majority of the storms in this area, whether the PAH load is in the first flush or not. The first Workshop on Agricultural Air Quality: State of the Science was held at the Bolger Center in Potomac, Maryland from 4 to 8 June 2006. This international conference assembled approximately 350 people representing 25 nations from 5 continents, with disciplines ranging from atmospheric chemistry to soil science. The workshop was designed as an open forum in which participants could openly exchange the most current knowledge and learn about numerous international perspectives regarding agricultural air quality. Participants represented many stakeholder groups concerned with the growing need to assess agricultural impacts on the atmosphere and to develop beneficial policies to improve air quality. The workshop focused on identifying methods to improve emissions inventories and best management practices for agriculture. Workshop participants also made recommendations for technological and methodological improvements in current emissions measurement and modeling practices. The workshop commenced with a session on agricultural emissions and was followed by international perspectives from the United States, Europe, Australia, India, and South America. This paper summarizes the findings and issues of the workshop and articulates future research needs. These needs were identified in three general areas: (1) improvement of emissions measurement; (2) development of appropriate emission factors; and (3) implementation of best management practices (BMPs) to minimize negative environmental impacts. Improvements in the appropriate measurements will inform decisions regarding US farming practices. A need was demonstrated for a national/international network to monitor atmospheric emissions from agriculture and their subsequent depositions to surrounding areas. Information collected through such a program may be used to assess model performance and could be critical for evaluating any future regulatory policies or BMPs. The workshop concluded that efforts to maximize benefits and reduce detrimental effects of agricultural production need to transcend disciplinary, geographic, and political boundaries. Also, such efforts should involve natural and social scientists, economists, engineers, business leaders, and decision makers. Nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) enriched water originates from subsurface drains or "tiles" that underlay many fields in the Corn Belt and is the primary source of NO3-N to surface waters in this region. To better assess the fate and transport of nutrients, such as NO3-N, the tile drain and pothole components of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) were enhanced and modified in the previous component of this study. In this study, the environmental and economic impacts of various best management practice (BMP) scenarios often adopted by local farmers to reduce sediment and nutrient loadings (in particular NO3-N) were evaluated using the modified SWAT (SWAT-M) and FEM (Farm-level Economic Model) models. Measured values of water quality indicators from the Walnut Creek watershed (WCW) located in central Iowa were used to verify the capability of SWAT-M to predict the impact of late-spring nitrate test (LSNT) and rye cover crop management on NO3-N reduction at the subbasin level. The results obtained from SWAT-M simulation results, similar to field measurement data, indicated a 25% reduction in NO3-N under the LSNT scenario. FEM results indicated a corresponding increased annual cost of $6/ha across all farms in the watershed. Simulation of other scenarios, including winter cover cropping and a combination of LSNT and cover cropping at different adoption rates within WCW, resulted in a progressive reduction in sediment and nutrient losses as adoption rates increased. Use of the rye cover crop added about $25/ha to $35/ha to the annual cost of the average farm, indicating that some cost-share support may be necessary to encourage farmers to use winter cover crops. Environmental models are used to assess and evaluate various best management practices (BMPs) at field (e.g., Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender, APEX) and watershed (e.g., Soil and Water Assessment Tool, SWAT) levels. However, models such as SWAT and APEX are only capable of simulating, mechanistically, a limited number of BMP scenarios individually. Therefore, this study was conducted to: (1) develop an automated program referred to as SWAPP to convert SWAT files to and from APEX format and simulate SWAT and APEX simultaneously, and (2) to evaluate this program using measured data from the upper North Bosque River watershed in central Texas. In this study, SWAT (version 2000) and APEX (version 2110) were utilized within SWAPP. Simulations from SWAT alone (SWAT-A) and the combined SWAT and APEX models in SWAPP were compared with the historical measured data collected in the upper North Bosque River (UNBR) watershed. In the first phase of this study, SWAT-A was applied to simulate all land uses in the UNBR watershed. In the second phase, stream flow and losses of sediment and nutrients from all crop and pasture lands within the UNBR watershed were simulated by APEX. The results obtained from APEX, and remaining land uses in the UNBR watershed (e.g., urban) simulated by SWAT, were then routed to the outlet of the watershed using the SWAT routing function. The measured flow, sediment, and nutrients at three sites within the UNBR watershed were simulated by SWAT-A and the combined SWAT and APEX within SWAPP for the period of January 1994 through July 1999. The results obtained from the three sites within the UNBR watershed indicate that the pattern (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies, E) and average monthly values of flow and loadings predicted by the combined SWAT and APEX within SWAPP were similar, and in some cases (mainly for sediment and nutrients loadings) closer to the measured values, as compared to SWAT-A. For instance, the E values for flow obtained from SWAPP ranged from 0.65 to O. 74, while those from SWAT-A ranged from 0.55 to O. 75. The E value for sediment loading at three sampling sites ranged from 0.55 to O. 74 for SWAPP, as compared to 0.41 to O. 72 for SWAT-A, and the E values for nutrient loadings ranged from -0.04 to 0.88 for SWAPP, compared to -0.74 to 0.82 for SWAT-A. The results obtained from this study indicated that the SWAPP program not only improved the modeling results, but also provides an opportunity to utilize APEX within the SWAPP program for simulating management practices, such as multicropping or filter strips, at the field level, whereas SWAT alone currently has limited capability to simulate these practices. Distributed parameter watershed models are often used for evaluating the effectiveness of various best management practices (BMPs). Streamflow, sediment, and nutrient yield predictions of a watershed model can be affected by spatial resolution as dictated by watershed subdivision. The objectives of this paper are to show that evaluation of BMPs using a model is strongly linked to the level of watershed subdivision; to suggest a methodology for identifying an appropriate subdivision level; and to examine the efficacy of different BMPs at field and watershed scales. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was calibrated and validated for streamf low, sediment, and nutrient yields at the outlet of the Dreisbach (623 ha) and Smith Fry (730 ha) watersheds in Maumee River Basin, Indiana. Grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures, field borders, and parallel terraces are the BMPs that were installed in the study area in the 1970s. Sediment and nutrient outputs from the calibrated model were compared at various watershed subdivision levels, both with and without implementation of these BMPs. Results for the study watersheds indicated that evaluation of the impacts of these BMPs on sediment and nutrient yields was very sensitive to the level of subdivision that was implemented in SWAT. An optimal watershed subdivision level for representation of the BMPs was identified through numerical simulations. For the study watersheds, it would appear that the average subwatershed area corresponding to approximately 4 percent of total watershed area is needed to represent the influence of these BMPs when using the SWAT model. Architectural applications of copper on roofs, gutters and facades exposes it to weathering forces, such as wind and all forms of precipitation. This leads to the dissolution of copper from these surfaces and its introduction into local watersheds. The potential for exposure in local watersheds is a function of the amount of copper entering the watershed and the assimilation capacity of a wide variety of natural and manmade substrates that transform and sequester copper, thus reducing exposure of sensitive organisms to bioavailable copper. This study investigates one type of manmade substrate, stormwater conduit, commonly used to transport stormwater away from buildings. Conduits made of PVC and cast iron did not significantly remove copper from a synthetic stormwater spiked with copper averaging 2391 μg Cu/L. Concrete conduit significantly removed copper from the synthetic water and at high rates (12 – 18%) over a short distance (610 cm). A high percentage (81 – 100%) of the copper removed from the water was from the dissolved copper fraction. Once adsorbed to the concrete, copper did not readily leach back into copper-free water subsequently pumped into the conduit. These characteristics have significant implications for watershed management and best management practices for reducing concentrations of copper in stormwater runoff. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article introduces a collection of papers from the fourth biennial ASABE 21st Century Watershed Technology Conference and Workshop: Improving Water Quality and the Environment, held in Hamilton, New Zealand, on November 3-6, 2014. This Special Collection consists of three articles selected from the 47 meeting papers. The technical presentations at the conference focused on solving spatial and temporal water quality and quantity problems and addressed topics such as watershed management in developing countries, water quality standards, agricultural best management practice (BMP) effectiveness, emerging problems, impact of extreme weather conditions, biological monitoring, increasing stakeholder involvement, political and economic implications, watershed implementation planning, forest and rangeland water quality issues, and water resources education. At first glance, these topics seem quite diverse. A more detailed look suggested that the "big data" and data mining themes of the last conference in Bari, Italy, continued to develop.
