- Abstract
I will defend that institutionalized and universalist religions, like Catholic Church, can abandon - or at least relativize - their speeches, values and controls on gender and sexuality, in that they can serve as basis to the facing of all forms of violence against gender and sexuality, many of them based on the interpretation of sacred texts. This means that religious institutions in general and Catholic Church in particular will need to renounce to essentialist and naturalized foundations concerning this current field of human life, letting questions of gender and sexuality as irremediable part of private life, that is a fundamental conquest of Western modernization and of democracies based on it, characterized by institutional secularization, individual freedom and pluralism of lifestyles. This abandonment or discursive moderation about gender and sexuality could enable a very important renovation to religious institutions and, in the truth, as I think, it is the way par excellence that they must take on in the 21st century.
