Evolutionary robotics using real hardware has been almost exclusively restricted to evolving robot controllers, but the technology for evolvable morphologies is advancing quickly. We discuss a proof-of-concept study to demonstrate real robots that can reproduce. Following a general system plan, we implement a robotic habitat that contains all system components in the simplest possible form. We create an initial population of two robots and run a complete life cycle, resulting in a new robot, parented by the first two. Even though the individual steps are simplified to the maximum, the whole system validates the underlying concepts and provides a generic workflow for the creation of more complex incarnations. The vision behind this paper looks ahead to evolutionary robot systems where morphologies and controllers are evolved together and 'newborn' robots undergo a learning process to optimize their inherited brain for the inherited body. The specific problem we address is learning controllers for the task of directed locomotion in evolvable modular robots. To this end, we present a test suite of robots with different shapes and sizes and compare two learning algorithms, Bayesian optimization and HyperNEAT. The experiments in simulation show that both methods obtain good controllers, but Bayesian optimization is more effective and sample efficient. We validate the best learned controllers by constructing three robots from the test suite in the real world and observe their fitness and actual trajectories. The obtained results indicate a reality gap, but overall the trajectories are adequate and follow the target directions successfully. • We achieve the task of directed locomotion in evolvable modular robots rather than a typical undirected gait learning. • We investigate the generic methods that allow modular robots with arbitrary shapes and sizes for directed locomotion. • We validate the learned controllers for directed locomotion on real robots and reflect on the reality gap. The challenge of robotic reproduction – making of new robots by recombining two existing ones – has been recently cracked and physically evolving robot systems have come within reach. Here we address the next big hurdle: producing an adequate brain for a newborn robot. In particular, we address the task of targeted locomotion which is arguably a fundamental skill in any practical implementation. We introduce a controller architecture and a generic learning method to allow a modular robot with an arbitrary shape to learn to walk towards a target and follow this target if it moves.
