[Display omitted] • Water-soluble molecular capsules containing FePcs can accelerate the ORR. • FePcs encapsulated in a molecular capsule accelerated HER by applied potentials. • The molecular capsules can act as an electrochemical nanoreactor. The electrochemical properties of water-insoluble Fe-tetraphenylporphyrins and Fe-phthalocyanines encapsulated in molecular capsules were investigated in acidic and alkaline solutions. These compounds in the molecular capsules accelerated the O 2 reduction reaction, indicating that O 2 molecules can easily pass through the gaps in the capsule. Further, upon encapsulation, the overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction of Fe-phthalocyanines was improved by applying a potential in alkaline solution. This molecular capsule extends the electrochemistry of water-insoluble metal complexes in aqueous electrolyte solutions and acts as an electrochemical nanoreactor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
