A new methodology using microwave extraction, gas-diffusion microextraction (GDME) and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) was developed for the analysis of the quantitative detection of gaseous and solid benzotriazole (BTA) and the mass transfer behavior of BTA in volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) packaging. The best extraction conditions of BTA in the VCI films were obtained, and the vapor pressure of BTA in the VCI packaging was detected and characterized by a mathematical model using the new methodology. The migration content of BTA in the VCI films and the BTA content on the surface of the films were detected, and the diffusion coefficients at three temperatures were calculated. The vapor pressure and diffusion coefficients of BTA increased with increasing temperature, and the volatilization of BTA promoted the migration of BTA from the VCI films. Moreover, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to determine the migration of the BTA molecules within the VCI films at three temperatures; the overall trend of the experimental values was the same and the simulated values were generally within two orders of magnitude of the corresponding experimental values, with the difference likely due to the ignoring of the crystallinity of LDPE. A transparent, bendable, high oxygen barrier cellulose‐based film was prepared, which has far better oxygen barrier properties than conventional polyethylene, polypropylene and cellophane materials. A series of regenerated cellulose films (RCs) were prepared from filter paper lacking oxygen barrier properties under different cellulose concentrations and gelation times. It was shown that the cellulose concentration and gel time had a greater effect on the oxygen barrier properties of RCs. When the cellulose concentration was 4 wt% and the gel time was 3 h, the RCs obtained the lowest oxygen permeability coefficient (OPC) down to 2.21 × 10−17 cm3 cm cm−2 s−1 Pa−1. The films have a tensile strength of 109.5 MPa, an elongation at break of 27.3% and a light transmission rate of 89%. In further, molecular dynamics simulations showed that when the filter paper was converted to RCs, the increase in hydrogen bonding and the decrease in free volume between cellulose chains caused a decrease in the diffusion coefficient of oxygen. The tensile and shear failure behavior dependence on chain length and temperature in amorphous polymers are scrutinized using molecular dynamics simulations. A wide range chain length of alkane is tested under tension and shear with various temperatures. We find that the broken rate (the broken bond number to all polymer chain number ratios) under tension and shear increases with increasing chain length and temperature. For a given chain length and temperature, the broken rates under shear are always higher than those under tension at a same large strain. For a given chain length, the tensile and shear stresses decrease with increasing temperature. We propose three typical fracture mechanisms to effectively elucidate the ductile fracture response based on the predominance of chain scission process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extreme reduction of the thermal conductivity by defects and folds in carbon nanocoils (CNCs) are first demonstrated using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The thermal conductivity for two different defect types with five different folds in the CNCs is extensively studied and the maximum reduction can be up to 70% at both room temperature and 600 K by comparison of the corresponding straight single-walled carbon nanotubes. We reveal that the phonon scattering by coupled defects and folds can govern the reduction of the thermal conductivity by calculating phonon polarization vectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium is a commonly used material in aviation, aerospace, and military applications, due to the outstanding mechanical properties of titanium and its alloys. However, its relatively low thermal conductivity restricts its extended usage. The use of graphene as a filler shows great potential for the enhancement of thermal conductivity in titanium-based metal-matrix composites (MMCs). We used classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods to explore the thermal conductance at the titanium–graphene (Ti/Gr) interface for its thermal boundary conductance, which plays an important role in the thermal properties of Ti-based MMCs. The effects of system size, layer number, temperature, and strain were considered. The results show that the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) decreases with an increasing layer number and reaches a plateau at n = 5. TBC falls under tensile strain and, in turn, it grows with compressive strain. The variation of TBC is explained qualitatively by the interfacial atomic vibration coupling factor. The diffusion of five flavor organic molecules, including D-limonene, myrcene, ethyl hexanoate, 2-nonanone, and linalool in low density polyethylene (LDPE) film were investigated by combined experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies. The diffusion coefficients derived from the prediction model, experimental determination, and MD simulation were compared, and the related microscopic diffusion mechanism was investigated. The effects of the presence of the flavor organic molecules on the diffusion of O2 and H2O in polyethylene (PE) were also studied by MD simulation. Results show that: The diffusion of five flavor molecules in LDPE is well followed to Fick's second law by the immersion experiment; MD simulation indicates the dual mode diffusion mechanism of the flavor molecules is in LDPE; the diffusion coefficients from MD simulation are close to those from the experimental determination, but are slightly larger than those values; the presence of the flavor organic molecules hinders the diffusion of O2 and H2O, which can be well explained from the fraction of free volume (FFV) and interaction energy calculation results derived from MD simulation.
