Abstract: Conducting polymers have generated a great deal of interest because of their physical and chemical properties as well as their potential application in industry particularly in packaging applications. However one of short comings of most conducting polymer is that they are often formed as intractable films that are difficult to process. To overcome this problem we have incorporated conducting polymer, namely polyaniline into sheets of paper in order to create new composite material which combine the universal properties of paper product with the chemical and electrically conducting properties of the conducting polymer. Paper conducting polymer composite have been prepared by polymerizing aniline directly onto the paper sheet using ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS) as an oxidant at different temperatures. The prepared composite was characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The thermo-oxidative degradation was studied by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA); electrical conductivities measurements of the composites were significantly increased over those of the precursor paper. Paper material produced after about 1850 contains additives that cause progressive acidification of the cellulose matrix, which can result in severe degradation of the material and simultaneous deterioration in its strength properties. This problem has affected whole stocks of libraries and archives, in response to which the process of 'mass deacidification' has been developed. In this study, the structure and chemistry of the active reagent used in the main variant of this process has been identified as magnesium n-propoxycarbonate. The reagent, introduced in an inert fluorinated solvent, neutralizes acids in the paper matrix and simultaneously deposits a reserve of alkaline magnesium salts that counteract re-acidification. At the same time, it is much less alkaline than the magnesium alcoholates so that alkali-induced degradation reactions of cellulose (β-alkoxy elimination) are avoided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Papers have a complex hierarchical structure and the end-user functionalities such as hydrophobicity are controlled by a finishing layer. The application of an organic nanoparticle coating and drying of the aqueous dispersion results in an unique surface morphology with microscale domains that are internally patterned with nanoparticles. Better understanding of the multi-scale surface roughness patterns is obtained by monitoring the topography with non-contact profilometry (NCP) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) at different sampling areas ranging from 2000μm×2000μm to 0.5μm×0.5μm. The statistical roughness parameters are uniquely related to each other over the different measuring techniques and sampling sizes, as they are purely statistically determined. However, they cannot be directly extrapolated over the different sampling areas as they represent transitions at the nano-, micro-to-nano and microscale level. Therefore, the spatial roughness parameters including the correlation length and the specific frequency bandwidth should be taken into account for each measurement, which both allow for direct correlation of roughness data at different sampling sizes. Abstract: Electrodeposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with chloride (PEDOT-Cl) on a paper substrate is demonstrated. A fully printed silver/polyaniline (Ag/PANI) layer-by-layer structure on a pigment coated paper acted as a working electrode, on which a layer of PEDOT-Cl was galvanostatically grown in an electrochemical cell. The deposited PEDOT-Cl appeared as a dark-blue circular area on a green Ag/PANI electrode. The electrodeposition was further confirmed by chemical and topographical analyses. The results demonstrate the potential of low-cost paper substrates and roll-to-roll mass-manufacturing methods in electrochemical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
