Nuclear graphite has historically been a key component of many nuclear reactor designs and has emerged as key to numerous advanced nuclear reactor design concepts. Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are one broad group of advanced reactor designs currently being pursued by industry for commercialization. Several MSR designs under consideration use graphitic materials that directly interface with a molten salt, whether it is a fuel salt, coolant salt, or both. Therefore, the interaction of graphite materials with molten salts must be understood. To gain this required understanding, a range of data is needed including porosity, strength, and composition as a function of different salt exposure parameters. A laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurement and data analysis methodology was developed to obtain spatially resolved elemental composition information for graphite samples exposed to a molten fluoride salt. Traditional univariate emission line analysis of atomic, ionic, and molecular optical emission signals was coupled via correlation analysis with spectral decomposition of the data using principal component analysis. Elemental depth profiling and elemental mapping were also performed to visualize salt–graphite interactions. LIBS was demonstrated to be useful for measuring key analytes such as fluorine and hydrogen, which are troublesome for other analysis techniques. Manufactured graphite is a preferred material for in-core components of molten salt reactors and fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactors, which are in permanent contact with liquid salts. However, owing to the porous nature of nuclear graphite, under certain conditions, molten salts may intrude graphite's pores and affect graphite's properties and functionality. Therefore, a better understanding of molten salt intrusion (distribution across sample cross section and penetration depth) is needed to assess its effects. In this work, we have demonstrated the use of neutron imaging (computed tomography) in the evaluation of salt penetration and distribution of a wide range of graphite grades with diverse microstructures that have been subjected to FLiNaK (LiF–NaF–KF) intrusion at 750 °C and 5 bar pressure for 12 h. Because of the great neutron attenuation contrast from scattering and adsorption between Li (from FLiNaK) and the graphite matrix, we have obtained direct visualization of FLiNaK salt distribution in the salt-impregnated graphites for the first time. Three-dimensional reconstructed images and cross-sectional concentration profiles demonstrate that salt penetration and density distribution are greatly dependent on the microstructural properties of the graphite grade. The reactor core, moderator and reflectors of a thermal spectrum advanced molten salt reactor will constitute multi-tons of graphite. Porous reactor-grade graphite, if unprotected, can be permeated by molten salt depending on the infiltrating pressure differential and entrance diameters of accessible graphite pores. Salt and gas permeation of graphite can affect microstructural properties and radiation behavior but also facilitate diffusion, deposition and retention of fission products and tritium. Because of the significant void volume of nuclear graphite, fission products and tritium retention due to salt permeation necessitates seal coatings or pore impregnation to reduce open porosity. Alternatively, very fine-grained graphite grades with low Xe permeability are being developed. Here, we survey the current technologies for mitigating salt and gas transport into graphite. Abstract Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are being considered as one of the potential nuclear options to meet future energy demands. While the MSR designs are drastically different from the more traditional light water reactor, many of the waste streams are similar between the concepts. The purpose of this paper is to outline strategies for the treatment and processing of MSR-type wastes from concepts of reconditioning and recycle of certain components to partitioning and direct immobilization of other waste components. To help bridge science and technology gaps, knowledge gained from similar efforts such as pyroprocessing of Experimental Breeder Reactor II salt wastes can be leveraged to develop concept-to-disposition pathways. In the 1960s, the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment demonstrated the feasibility of molten salt reactors for civil applications. The Molten Salt Reactor Experiment used a nuclear graphite grade known as CGB in the core as the fast neutron moderator. For application in this purpose, CGB graphite underwent additional impregnation steps that are not typically used in conventional nuclear graphites. These additional impregnations significantly lowered the permeability and reduced the size of pore openings in CGB graphite, for the purpose of inhibiting molten salt ingression into the graphite. Although several publications report the mechanical properties and irradiation response of CGB graphite, little information has been published about the microstructure or sealant used for this graphite grade. Here the results of multiple advanced microscopy techniques are presented with the objective to investigate the unique microstructure and sealing technology of legacy material from the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment so it can be potentially readopted for modern reactors. The microstructural characterization shows that some pores were fully sealed by the impregnation whereas other regions contained foam-like materials that partially filled the void content. This manuscript also investigates and documents the nature and possible source of the sealant material. The pore sealing methods used for CGB are discussed and compared with other common technologies used to reduce the impregnation of molten salts into graphite components. Knowledge of CGB graphite's microstructure can enable development of new pore infiltration technologies to improve in operando behavior advancing the next generation of molten salt reactors. The possibility and consequences of salt-infiltration in graphite must be evaluated for graphite used in molten salt reactors (MSRs) and fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactors (FHRs), which can be subjected to salt pressures as high as 500 kPa. The volume of graphite porosity infiltrated by salt can be measured by direct infiltration and it can be predicted from the graphite pore size distribution, the surface tension of the salt, and the contact angle between the graphite and the salt. While these three properties are believed to be insensitive to irradiation, the former can be impacted by chronic or acute oxidation, and the latter two are highly sensitive to the chemistry of the salt and to events such as air ingress. For MSRs, predictions based on nominal properties of salt and graphite reveal that few graphite grades would satisfy the 4 vol% limit set in the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment, and even fewer would satisfy the 0.5 vol% design target. For FHRs, infiltration limits have not been defined and depend on the effect of infiltration on graphite properties, which are discussed. A hypothesis is presented for properties that may be impacted by infiltration and for which future studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
