Summary: Over a period of 15 years, Schistonchus was collected from sycones of Ficus subgenus Urostigma section Malvanthera in eastern Australia, and was found to occur widely. Here, Schistonchus macrophylla macrophylla is redescribed from F. macrophylla and F. superba , and a new subspecies, Schistonchus m. lightfooti subsp. n., from F. rubiginosa and F. superba. Schistonchus m. lightfooti subsp. n., is characterised by having a long post-vulval uterine sac (PUS) with thickened walls and a narrowly rounded or pointed distal tip, procorpus which is usually longer than the stylet length, pyriform metacorpus, trapezoid-shaped head capsule, papillae arranged as one large pair adcloacal, a large pair at mid-tail length, and a small pair near the tail tip, no caudal alae, and a spatulate tail tip in females; and was collected from Sydney in New South Wales (NSW) to southern Queensland. Schistonchus m. macrophylla is characterised by having a procorpus shorter than or equal to the stylet length, an ovoid metacorpus, rectangular-shaped head capsule, long PUS with thickened wall only at its distal tip, caudal alae, and papillae arranged as one pair precloacal, one small pair adcloacal, and a large pair at mid-tail length. Summary: Ficophagus from collecting trips in eastern Australia, made over 15 years, are summarised and show that species of the genus occurred widely in sycones of Ficus , subgenus Urostigma , section Malvanthera. Two new species (based on morphological differences and molecular sequencing) are described: Ficophagus elizabethae sp. n. from Ficus macrophylla , F. rubiginosa and F. obliqua , and Ficophagus richardi sp. n. from Ficus obliqua ; and a morphospecies, Ficophagus Morphospecies malandicus from Ficus obliqua. Ficophagus elizabethae sp. n. is characterised by having the excretory pore (EP) opening from the level of the junction of the conus and shaft of the stylet to that of the knobs, a relatively long procorpus (1.0-2.5 times length of stylet), female tail with an obliquely truncate tail with a hyaline area and a finely to broadly rounded tip which may be mucronate; post-vulval uterine sac (PUS) ca one vulval body diam. (VBD) in length; rose-thorn-shaped spicule with distinct rostrum and prominent condylus; and genital papillae arranged as largest pair adcloacal, second pair posterior to mid-tail length, and third small pair near tail tip; and was collected from Sydney in New South Wales, to Bundaberg in Queensland (QLD). Ficophagus richardi sp. n. is characterised by having the EP opening at the level of the junction of the stylet shaft and conus, a labial cap which is raised around the opening for the stylet; procorpus 0.8-1.7 times length of the stylet, PUS <1 VBD in length, long uterus, and female tail with a V-shaped hyaline area at the bluntly rounded tip; rose-thorn-shaped spicule with a small rostrum and prominent condylus, three pairs genital papillae, first and largest on anterior cloacal lip, second at 70% of tail length measured from cloacal aperture, and third near tip, and was collected from Ban Ban Springs in the south to the Bundaberg region in the mid-north of QLD. In addition, in the absence of pertinent molecular sequences, a morphospecies is described. Ficophagus Morphospecies malandicus is characterised by having the EP opening anterior to the junction of the stylet conus and shaft, procorpus 0.9-2 times length of stylet, a short PUS usually <1 VBD long, short uterus, rose-thorn-shaped spicule with a raised condylus and prominent rostrum, and three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail (one adcloacal, one posterior to mid-tail and one near tail tip); and was collected from the Atherton Tableland, QLD. A new species of fly, Fergusonina madidum Taylor sp.n. (Diptera: Fergusoninidae) from Leptospermum madidum A.R. Bean in far north Queensland and a new species of nematode, Fergusobia leptospermum Davies sp.n. (Tylenchida: Neotylenchidae) from L. laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. in southern Victoria, Australia are described. These represent the first species of the Fergusonina fly/Fergusobia nematode mutualism to be described from the genus Leptospermum (Myrtaceae). Fergusonina madidumsp.n. forms lateral and terminal multilocular shoot bud galls enclosed in subterminal leaflets. It can be distinguished from all other species of Fergusonina by the lack of dorsal setae on abdominal segment 7 of the female. Unlike most described species of Fergusonina it also lacks the posterior cross vein m-cu in the wing. It shares this character with F. giblindavisi Taylor and F. thomasi Taylor from flower bud galls on Corymbia, but both these species are large and abdominal segment 7 of females is densely setose. Its larva is unknown but from the morphology of puparia the dorsal shield comprises 3 broad transverse bands comprising lateral rows of raised ridge-like sclerotised spicules. Its associated species of nematode is not known. Fergusobia leptospermumsp.n. is associated with cryptic lateral and terminal usually unilocular shoot bud galls. It is characterised by the combination of an open to tight C-shaped parthenogenetic female having a small ‘a’ ratio, with a short but sturdy stylet, flat anterior end; huge dorsal pharyngeal gland, reproductive system with a relatively long uterus, and a sub-conoid tail with a broadly rounded tip; a C-shaped infective female with an almost hemispherical tail tip which may or may not be ventrally hooked; and an open C-shaped male with angular spicules and peloderan bursa arising near the anterior end, and a relatively long (c’ = 2.2-3.2) sub-conoid tail with a bluntly to broadly rounded tip. Its status as a distinct species is confirmed by molecular analyses. Its associated species of fly is known only from several larvae and a puparium, and remains undescribed. The dorsal shield of this Fergusonina species comprises 7 broad bands, the first six having heavily sclerotised raised ridges and the seventh with a medial field of weak spicules. The widely separated collection localities, together with the large number of species in Leptospermum suggest that the mutualism is likely to be speciose and occupy a broad geographic range on this host. Four new species of Ficophagus were recovered from the sycones of Ficus spp. from the Subgenus Urostigma section Americana from Central America. The species are described here as Ficophagus bullenei sp. n., F. costaricanus sp. n., F. paraensis sp. n. and F. kayai sp. n. The new species are differentiated from other species of the genus by a combination of morphological characters including body length, position of the excretory pore, spicule shape, stylet form, length of the post-uterine sac, tail shape, sequence data of the ribosomal DNA 18S, 28S D2-D3 and mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I, biogeographical range, and host wasp and Ficus species affiliations. In addition, five morphospecies are described from Ficus cahuitensis, F. citrifolia, F. dugandii, F. obtusifolia, and F. trigonata, respectively. Aphelenchoidid nematodes were collected from the sycones of Ficus subgenus Pharmacosycea from Central America. Two new species of Ficophagus were recovered, and are described herein as F. maxima sp. n. and F. yoponensis sp. n. from Ficus maxima and F. yoponensis, respectively. They are differentiated from other species of the genus by a combination of morphological characters including having C-shaped females and spiral males, EP opening close to the lips, a short to long post-uterine sac, spicule characters, three pairs of subventral caudal papillae, DNA sequence data, biogeographical range, and host wasp and Ficus species affiliation. The new species are differentiated from each other by spicule characters, length of the post-uterine sac, spermatheca shape, and female tail shape. In addition, three morphospecies were collected from sycones of Ficus glabrata, F. insipida and F. tonduzii, respectively. Fergusobia (Sphaerularioidea, Tylenchida) is the only known nematode to have a dicyclic life cycle with a generation in a plant (a myrtaceous host) followed by one in an insect (a Fergusonina fly: Diptera, Fergusoninidae). The nematode and fly have a mutualistic association, with the nematode inducing a plant gall on which the fly feeds and develops, and the fly providing transport for the nematode. The life cycle, specificity, diversity and distribution of the nematode are described, and the nematode phylogeny is discussed. Fergusobia is monophyletic but its origins are unclear. This paper raises questions about Fergusobia, including: what model best accounts for evolution of the known diversity of the nematode/fly mutualism?; how are the nematode/fly life cycles coordinated?; how do the nematodes avoid resistance mechanisms of both flies and plants?; what cecidogenic processes does the nematode use?; and what is the form of parthenogenesis occurring in Fergusobia and how does it relate to the inheritance of variability? Given the models of genomes and transcriptomes now available for other plant-parasitic nematodes and the availability of technologies to examine Fergusobia, it should be possible to answer some of these questions and begin to understand how Fergusobia nematodes might have evolved. The purposes of this paper are to clarify the taxonomic status of the fig-pollinating wasp associate Schistonchus sensu lato (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) and to suggest directions for future research on the systematics, life history and ecology of the group. Molecular phylogenetic analyses suggest that Schistonchus s.l. is polyphyletic, and the composition of the three major clades is outlined, together with information on nematode morphology, plant host species, associated pollinating wasp species, and distribution. Biological information and collection data is presented for Schistonchus s.l. from Ficus sycones (Moracea) in Africa, Australia, Asia and Central America, and its putative phylogeny is discussed based on molecular and morphological evidence. Both wasps and figs are millions of years old and have worldwide distribution in tropical areas, i.e., opportunities for Schistonchus s.l.-like nematodes to have evolved could have occurred more than once. In addition, figs and their pollinating wasps have variable life histories, which could have provided opportunities for Schistonchus s.l. to also develop different life histories. However, these histories occur inside fig sycones and in association with wasps, which has apparently led to evolutionary convergence and extreme morphological conservatism. Diagnostic characters and their states, derived from examination of described species and morphospecies of Schistonchus s.l. and informed by molecular phylogenetic inferences, are discussed and illustrated. Schistonchus sensu stricto is redefined, and Ficophagus n. gen. and Martininema n. gen. are proposed. Schistonchus s.s. is morphologically characterised by having the excretory pore opening in the region of, or posterior to, the metacorpus; Ficophagus n. gen. by having the excretory pore opening very near the cephalic region; and Martininema n. gen. by having it opening at the anterior end of the metacorpus. Schistonchus zealandicus n. sp. was recovered from the sycones of Ficus macrophylla from St Helier's Bay, Mt Wellington, and St Johns, suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. It is characterised by having the opening of the excretory pore located just posterior to the anterior end of the nematode but anterior to the conus level of the stylet, a short post-vulval uterine sac (10-18 p. m or 0.4-0.7 vulval body diam. long), presence of two incisures in the lateral field with many broken, non-defined lines between them, rose-thorn-shaped spicule, three pairs of subventral papillae on the male tail (one pair adcloacal on the anterior lip, one pair slightly posterior to mid-tail length, and one pair close to tail tip), a distinctive mucron on the male tail, apparent biogeographical range, and its association with F. macrophylla. The absence of a lip sector disc suggests that it is close to S. altermacrophylla, S. aureus and S. laevigatus. Molecular phylogeny of near full length small subunit and D2-D3 expansion segments of the large subunit rRNA genes supports the proposal of S. zealandicus n. sp. as a new species. Ficotylus laselvae n. sp. was recovered from under the bracts of figs (syconia) of Ficus colubrinae from La Selva, Costa Rica, during a survey of nematode rainforest biodiversity and is described herein. This is only the second report of an association between the nematode suborder Tylenchina and the sycones of figs. Previous reports of most nematode associates of the sycones of figs have been from the lumen and involved transmission by female fig wasp pollinators (Agaonidae) during pollination/oviposition (e.g., Schistonchus and Parasitodiplogaster spp.). The association between F. laselvae n. sp. and Ficus colubrinae may involve an invertebrate host, but none was recovered from dissections of the bracts during this study. It is also possible that this is a rainforest understory nematode that feeds ectoparasitically in protected areas on the aerial parts of F. colubrinae. Molecular analysis using near-full-length sequences of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA and D2-D3 expansion segments of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA genes of Ficotylus laselvae n. sp. suggests that it is a member of the suborder Tylenchina (infraorder: Tylenchomorpha; family: Anguinidae) and that the closest sequenced species is F. congestae from the lumen of sycones of Ficus congesta from Queensland, Australia. Although both nematode species are associated with figs, they are morphologically divergent, suggesting that the different micro-niches that they fill provide different selective pressures for evolution of differing morphological characters or they represent different life history morphotypes of a dicyclic genus. A unique obligate mutualism occurs between species of Fergusonina Malloch flies ( Diptera: Fergusoninidae) and nematodes of the genus Fergusobia Currie ( Nematoda: Neotylenchidae). These mutualists together form different types of galls on Myrtaceae, mainly in Australia. The galling association is species-specific, and each mutualism in turn displays host specificity. This tritrophic system represents a compelling arena to test hypotheses about coevolution between the host plants, parasitic nematodes and the fergusoninid flies, and the evolution of these intimate mutualisms. We have a basic knowledge of the interactions between the host plant, fly and nematode in this system, but a more sophisticated understanding will require a much more intensive and coordinated research effort. Summaries of the known Fergusonina/ Fergusobia species associations and gall type terminology are presented. This paper identifies the key advantages of the system and questions to be addressed, and proposes a number of predictions about the evolutionary dynamics of the system given our understanding of the biology of the mutualists. Future research will profitably focus on (1) gall cecidogenesis and phenology, (2) the interaction between the fly larva and the nematode in the gall, and between the adult female fly and the parasitic nematode, (3) the means by which the fly and nematode life cycles are coordinated, (4) a targeted search of groups in the plant family Myrtaceae that have not yet been identified as gall hosts, and (5) establishment and comparison of the phylogenetic relationships of the host plants, fly species and nematodes. Recently derived phylogenies and divergence time estimation studies of the Diptera and the Myrtaceae show that the fly family Fergusoninidae is less than half the age of the Myrtaceae, discounting the hypothesis of cospeciation and coradiation of the fly/nematode mutualism and the plants at the broadest levels. Ficus watkinsiana (sub-genus Urostigma, Section Stilpnophyllum) is endemic to Australia, growing in two disjunct populations, one in north-eastern Queensland and the other in south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales. Schistonchus molochi sp. n. is described from F. watkinsiana in Queensland, Australia, and differentiated from other species of Schistonchus by a combination of morphological characters including having the excretory pore opening near the nerve ring, a broad head, a large, strongly sclerotised, stylet, a distinct lip sector disc with raised edges, a long post-uterine sac, rose-thorn-shaped spicule, no gubernaculum, three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail (one pair pre-cloacal on the anterior lip, one pair adcloacal on the posterior lip, and one slightly posterior to mid-tail) and bluntly rounded tail tip, and apparent biogeographical range. Presence of the lip sector disc suggests that it is closest to S. macrophylla. Schistonchus athertonensis sp. n. is also described from F. watkinsiana in Queensland and is characterised by a combination of morphological characters, including having the excretory pore opening near the nerve ring, a medium length post-uterine sac, presence of vulval flap in some specimens, rose-thorn-shaped spicule, no gubernaculum, and three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail (one pair adcloacal on the posterior lip, one at three to four-fifths of the tail length and one near the tip), a narrowly rounded tail tip, and apparent biogeographical range. Morphospecies 8, originally collected from F. obliqua, was also collected from F. watkinsiana in Queensland, and S. altermacrophylla was found with it in South Australia. Three new species of Schistonchus were recovered from sycones of Ficus racemosa, F. hispida and F. variegata (Moraceae Subgenus Sycomorus, Section Sycomorus) from the Cairns region in north-eastern Australia. Schistonchus baculum sp. n. is described from F. racemosa and F. hispida and is differentiated from other species of Schistonchus by a combination of morphological characters including having males with a walking-stick shape, excretory pore opening at the anterior end of the metacorpus, a long post-uterine sac, rose-thorn-shaped spicules, no gubernaculum, two pairs of subventral papillae on the tail, DNA sequence data, and apparent biogeographical range. Schistonchus fleckeri sp. n. is described from F. racemosa, F. hispida and F. variegata and is differentiated by a combination of morphological characters, including a C-shaped female and C-shaped to spiral males, the excretory pore opening near the lips, a short to medium length post-uterine sac, slender sickle-shaped spicules with a reduced rostrum, no gubernaculum, three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail, and apparent biogeographical range. Schistonchus cassowaryi sp. n. is described from F. variegata and is differentiated by a combination of morphological characters, including having C-shaped males and females, a posterior excretory pore situated posterior to the nerve ring, a short to medium length post-uterine sac, rose-thorn-shaped spicules, three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail (one adcloacal, one at mid-tail near lateral, and one near the tip), DNA sequence data, and apparent biogeographical range. A new genus and species of anguinid nematode, Zeatylenchus pittosporum gen. n., sp. n., was recovered from leaves of Pittosporum tenuifolium from Hahei, Coromandel Region, North Island, New Zealand. The genus is characterised by having slender males and females, excretory pore opening near the lips and level with the knobs of the retracted stylet, pharynx with a weak non- muscular median bulb, pharyngeal glands overlapping the intestine, females with a single gonad with a quadricolumella and post-uterine sac; and males with slender arcuate spicules and the bursa arising < 1 anal body diam. anterior to the cloacal aperture and extending ca 30% of distance to the tail tip. Its feeding does not induce galls, only foliar chlorosis. The species has particular characters, including a short, robust stylet with conus forming ca 40% of stylet length and small rounded compact knobs, and tall offset dorsally with a pointed tip. Diploscapter formicidae sp. n. was collected from the ant Prolasius advenus and its nests in native beech forests of the South Island, New Zealand. This is a new host record for the nematode genus and the first report of an ant associate from the southern hemisphere. Diploscapter formicidae sp. n. appears to be native to New Zealand. No males were found from collections from 16 nests, in agreement with previously published data on the other members of this genus, suggesting that males are absent or very rare. The adult females have bilateral symmetry of the head, characteristic dorsal and ventral projections of the putative cheilostom with paired hook-like structures or hamuli, expansive membranous lateral lip flaps or laciniae, gymnostom and stegostom with parallel walls, a swollen procorpus, large terminal bulb with a strong valve, paired ovaries with medial vulva, and a short conoid tall with slender pointed or spicate tip. Scanning electron micrographs of the structure of the head confirmed that the lateral laciniae with finger-like tines or filopodia are moveable (alternately covering and exposing the mouth). These lateral lip flaps are located posterior to the stoma, but anterior to the pore-like amphidial openings. The anterior margin of the cheilostom possesses apomorphic lateral bell-shaped projections and the hamuli are broader and less pointed than other species that have been examined. Molecular phylogeny of near full-length small subunit, D2/D3 expansion segments of the large subunit rRNA gene and heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) gene showed that D. formicidae sp. n. is monophyletic with the Diploscapter species and isolates available in GenBank, but is on an independent trajectory supporting separate species status. Ficus benjamina (Moracaeae subfamily Urostigma, section Conosycea) grows naturally in tropical Asia and in Australia in the north of the Northern Territory and the Cairns region of Queensland. It is widely grown as an ornamental in more temperate regions of Australia. Schistonchus benjamhza sp. n. is described from sycones of F. benjamina in Brisbane, and is differentiated from other species of Schistonchus by a combination of morphological characters including having the excretory pore opening near the head, a short post-vulval uterine sac, rose thorn-shaped spicule, lightly sclerotised stylet and spicule, and three pairs of subventral papillae on the tail (one adcloacal, one at mid-tail length and one near the tail tip); and apparent biogeographical range. Phylogenetic analyses based on D3 sequences from collections from both northern and southern Queensland suggest that S. benjamina sp. n. is a species complex, but specimens from the different locations cannot be separated on morphological or morphometric data. A new genus and species of anguinid nematode, Litylenchus coprosma gen. n., sp. n., was recovered from leaves of Coprosma repens A. Rich. from an amenity planting in Wellington, New Zealand. The genus is characterised by having slender males and slender or semi-obese females, pharynx with a weak non-muscular median bulb, a terminal bulb containing the pharyngeal glands, female with a single gonad having a quadricolumella and post-uterine sac; male with arcuate spicules and the bursa arising 1-2 anal body diam. anterior to the cloacal aperture and extending nearly to the tail tip, and does not induce galls, only foliar chlorosis. The species is characterised by having a short, robust stylet with conus forming ca 40% of stylet length and three well developed rounded knobs, secretory/excretory pore opening posterior to the nerve ring, terminal bulb abutting the intestine, and tail tip of variable form. A checklist of Schistonchus collected from Ficus spp. in Australia and stored in the Waite Nematode Collection at the University of Adelaide is presented. Within Australia, Schistonchus contains 12 morphospecies and four nominal species, based on a combination of the following characters: body shape when heat-relaxed, position of excretory pore, length of post-uterine sac, spicule form, and number and position of caudal papillae. Up to four morphospecies of Schistonchus have been collected from one species of Ficus and, in several cases, one morphospecies of Schistonchus has been collected from more than one host fig species. A phylogenetic tree based on D2/D3 sequences showed that Australian collections of Schistonchus fall into two clades, suggestive of endemic and introduced lineages with host switching. Schistonchus aculeata sp. n. is described from F. aculeata and F. opposita and differentiated from other species of Schistonchus by having the excretory pore opening near the lips, a short post-uterine sac, rosethorn-shaped spicules, arcuate gubernaculum or thickening of dorsal wall, amoeboid sperm, and three pairs of caudal papillae (one pair adcloacal, one just posterior to mid-tail, and one near the tail tip), association with Kradibia spp. pollinating wasps and apparent biogeographical range. A species of aphelenchoidid nematode was isolated from a subterranean termite, Cylindrotermes macrognathus, during a survey of termite-associated nematodes in a conserved forest in La Selva, Costa Rica. The nematode was morphologically intermediate between the families Aphelenchidae and Aphelenchoididae, i.e., the nematode had a true bursa supported by bursal limb-like genital papillae but lacked a clear pharyngeal isthmus. The molecular phylogenetic status of the new nematode among tylenchid, cephalobid, panagrolaimid, aphelenchid and aphelenchoidid genera was analysed based on ca 1.2 kb of SSU ribosomal DNA sequence and the inferred position was basal to the family Aphelenchoididae. It was clearly not part of the clade containing the genus Aphelenchus (=Aphelenchidae). This nematode is described herein as Pseudaphelenchus yukiae n. gen., n. sp., and the family definition of Aphelenchoididae is emended to include the unique morphological characters of this new genus. The molecular phylogenetic analysis supported the paraphyly of the three Aphelenchoidinae genera Aphelenchoides, Laimaphelenchus and Schistonchus and the monophyly of Ektaphelenchinae, Seinura (Seinurinae) and Noctuidonema (Acugutturinae). A new species each of Schistonchus and Parasitodiplogaster were recovered from the sycones of Ficus virens from St Lucia, Brisbane, QLD, Australia. This is also the first record of Parasitodiplogaster from Australia. The species are described here as Schistonchus virens sp. n. and Parasitodiplogaster australis sp. n. Schistonchus virens sp. n. is differentiated from other species of the genus by a combination of morphological characters, including C-shaped females and males, excretory pore opening located near the head, a short post-vulval uterine sac, rose-thorn-shaped spicule, amoeboid sperm, no gubernaculum, three pairs of subventral papillae on the male tail, DNA sequence data; biogeographical range and host wasp and Ficus species affiliation. Parasitodiplogaster australis sp. n. is differentiated from all other species of the genus by having females with only one gonad, males with C-shaped spicules with an arcuate, slender gubernaculum, characteristic arrangement of the male caudal papillae and DNA sequence data. A new monotypic genus of tylenchid nematode, Ficotylus n. gen., was recovered from sycones of Ficus congesta L. from Mourilyan, Mission Beach and Cairns, Queensland, Australia. The genus is characterised by having slender nematodes with a long stylet, a sub-cylindrical pharynx lacking a terminal bulb, pharyngeal glands overlapping the intestine for a short distance, secretory/excretory pore opening posterior to the nerve ring, female with a single gonad and post-vulval sac and male with slender, arcuate, cephalated spicules with the bursa arising near the proximal level of the retracted spicule and supported by a pair of papilla-like structures at its widest point. This is the first record of a tylenchid occurring within Ficus sycones. Ficotylus congestae gen. n., sp. n. is distinguished by possessing a long stylet (29-39 μm) with conus forming ca 40% of stylet length and three well developed bifid knobs at the base of the shaft, a degenerate pharynx with a vestigial metacorpus (no valve) and no basal bulb, females with a post-vulval uterine sac and males with a characteristic bursa supported by a pair of papilla-like structures at its widest point, then narrowing rapidly and just enveloping tail. Ficotylus congestae gen. n., sp. n. is a putative member of the Anguinata (sensu Siddiqi, 1985), based on molecular phylogeny of near full length SSU and D2/D3 expansion segments of the large subunit (LSU) rDNA. Six isolates of Australian Aphelenchoidoidea, viz., Laimaphelenchus preissii from native coniferous Callitris preissii trees, L. australis from the common pine plantation trees of Pinus radiata and P. pinaster and L. heidelbergi and two morphospecies of Aphelenchoides (H1 and K1) and Cryptaphelenchus sp. (K2) from diseased P. radiata trees, were studied using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and phylogenetic analyses of nearly full length sequences of SSU, D2/D3 expansion segments of LSU rDNA and a fragment of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of SSU, LSU and COI of the six nematode species revealed that none of these Australian aphelenchoidoids was inferred to be closely related to Bursaphelenchus. The selected isolates of Aphelenchoides and Laimaphelenchus used in this study were paraphyletic in all molecular analyses. Cryptaphelenchus sp.
