Abstract

8 pages; Investigations are currently performed on matrices for the specific immobilization of long-lived radionuclides such as fission products resulting from an enhanced reprocessing of spent fuel. Hollandite (nominally BaAl2Ti6O16), one of the phases constituting Synroc, receives renewed interest as specific Cs-host wasteform. The radioactive cesium isotopes decay involves the emission of $\beta$ particles, $\gama$ rays and the transmutation of Cs to stable Ba ions. Abstract

Several single phase hollandite ceramics having Ba2+ x Cs+ y ( C = Al,Fe)3+ 2 x+ y Ti4+ 8−2 x− y O16 composition have been synthesized and irradiated under external electron beams simulating the β-irradiation of radioactive cesium. These samples have been characterized by 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy. Mössbauer results show that the irradiation modifies the local arrangements of Ba cations around Fe3+ ions by atomic displacement of Ba ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
