There is an urgent need to develop cost‐effective electrocatalysts based on Pt for a broad spectrum of applications, including those vital to the operation of fuel cells. Hollowing out the interior of Pt nanocrystals offers a simple and viable strategy for maximizing the utilization efficiency of this precious metal while enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we report the synthesis and electrocatalytic evaluation of Pt−Ag icosahedral nanocages with an average wall thickness of 1.6 nm. The Pt atoms are coated on the surface of Ag icosahedral seeds, leading to the formation of Ag@PtnL core‐shell icosahedral nanocrystals with tunable shell thicknesses. The core‐shell nanocrystals are then converted to icosahedral nanocages by selectively etching away the Ag in the core. The as‐obtained nanocages with a composition of Pt4.5Ag exhibit an almost 3‐fold enhancement in specific activity toward oxygen reduction relative to the commercial Pt/C in acid media. We report a simple route based upon seed‐mediated growth to the synthesis of Pd@AuxPd1−x (0.8≤x≤1) core–shell nanocubes. Benefiting from the well‐defined {100} facets and an optimal Au/Pd ratio for the surface, the nanocubes bearing a shell made of Au0.95Pd0.05 work as an efficient electrocatalyst toward H2O2 production, with high selectivity of 93–100 % in the low‐overpotential region of 0.4–0.7 V. When the Au0.95Pd0.05 alloy is confined to a shell of only three atomic layers in thickness, the electrocatalyst is able to maintain its surface structure and elemental composition, endowing continuous and stable production of H2O2 during oxygen reduction at a high rate of 1.62 mol g(Pd+Au)−1 h−1. Despite the large number of reports on colloidal nanocrystals, very little is known about the mechanistic details in terms of nucleation and growth at the atomistic level. Taking bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals as an example, here we integrate in situ liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy with first-principles calculations to shed light on the atomistic details involved in the nucleation and growth of Pt on Pd cubic seeds. We elucidate the roles played by key synthesis parameters, including capping agent and precursor concentration, in controlling the nucleation site, diffusion path, and growth pattern of the Pt atoms. When the faces of a cubic seed are capped by Br−, Pt atoms preferentially nucleate from corners and then diffuse to edges and faces for the creation of a uniform shell. The diffusion does not occur until the Pt deposited at the corner has reached a threshold thickness. At a high concentration of the precursor, self-nucleation takes place and the Pt clusters then randomly attach to the surface of a seed for the formation of a non-uniform shell. These atomistic insights offer a general guideline for the rational synthesis of nanocrystals with diverse compositions, structures, shapes, and related properties. Creating predictable, controllable nanoparticles relies on a mechanistic understanding of their synthesis. Noble‐metal nanocrystals with anisotropic shapes have received increasing interest owing to their unique properties. Here, a facile route to the preparation of Pt nanobars with aspect ratios tunable up to 2.1 was reported by simply reducing a PtIV precursor in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at 160 °C in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). In addition to its commonly observed roles as a solvent and a reductant, DMF could also decompose to generate CO, a capping agent capable of selectively passivating Pt{100} facets to promote the formation of nanobars. The size and aspect ratio of the nanobars could be tuned by varying the amount of PtIV precursor involved in the synthesis, as well as the concentration of PVP because of its dual roles as a stabilizer and a co‐reductant. We report a facile synthesis of Ag@Pd core−shell icosahedral nanocrystals for the development of cost‐effective electrocatalysts toward formic acid oxidation. With 12.4 nm Ag icosahedra serving as seeds, Pd shells of controlled thicknesses in the range of 3.6–5.8 atomic layers are grown by adjusting the experimental parameters. When examined as catalysts toward formic acid oxidation, all the Ag@Pd nanocrystals exhibit enhanced mass activities relative to a commercial Pd/C catalyst, with the Ag@Pd4.2L nanocrystals showing enhanced mass activity that is almost twice that of a commercial Pd/C. The chronoamperometry measurements indicate that all the Ag@Pd/C catalysts are more robust than the Pd/C, with the catalyst based on Ag@Pd4.2L nanocrystals showing a mass activity greater than that of the pristine Pd/C after holding in a mixture of HCOOH and HClO4 at 0.75 V for 1,000 s. Production of syngas with tunable CO/H2 ratio from renewable resources is an ideal way to provide a carbon-neutral feedstock for liquid fuel production. Ag is a benchmark electrocatalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion but high overpotential limits the efficiency. We synthesize AgP2 nanocrystals (NCs) with a greater than 3-fold reduction in overpotential for electrochemical CO2-to-CO reduction compared to Ag and greatly enhanced stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal a significant energy barrier decrease in the formate intermediate formation step. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) shows that a maximum Faradaic efficiency is achieved at an average silver valence state of +1.08 in AgP2 NCs. A photocathode consisting of a n+p-Si wafer coated with ultrathin Al2O3 and AgP2 NCs achieves an onset potential of 0.2 V vs. RHE for CO production and a partial photocurrent density for CO at −0.11 V vs. RHE (j−0.11, CO) of −3.2 mA cm−2. Conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals by use of renewable energy is promising to achieve a carbon-neutral energy cycle. Here, the authors show that AgP2 is a stable, selective and efficient syngas catalyst for solar-to-fuel conversion with a 3-fold lower overpotential compared to the benchmark Ag catalyst. Decahedral nanocrystals have received great attention owing to their unique symmetry and strain-energy distribution. In contrast to other noble metals, it has been difficult to synthesize decahedral Rh nanocrystals. We report a robust, one-pot method based on polyol reduction for the facile synthesis of Rh decahedral nanocrystals in high purity, with sub-20 nm sizes. The success of the synthesis relied on our ability to manipulate reduction kinetics by systematically tuning experimental parameters. We found that the yield of Rh decahedral nanocrystals could be maximized by optimizing: i) the concentration of Rh(acac)3 (metal precursor); ii) the molecular weight and amount of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (colloidal stabilizer/capping agent); and iii) the chain length of the polyol (solvent/reducing agent), with tetraethylene glycol being the best. Abstract: We report a facile synthesis of Rh icosahedra with average sizes up to 12.0±0.8 nm through the use of a relatively slow reduction process. By using Rh(acac)3 as a precursor to Rh and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a reducing agent, the reduction kinetics can be manipulated such to promote the formation of twin defects in the Rh nanocrystals. When Rh(acac)3 is replaced by other precursors containing mono‐dentate ligands, single‐crystal Rh nanocrystals are obtained due to the acceleration of reduction rate. By increasing the molecular weight of PVP from 10 000 to 1 300 000, the resulting Rh nanocrystals are transformed from single‐crystal octahedra to multiply twinned icosahedra and stacking‐fault‐lined plates. These results suggest that the successful preparation of Rh icosahedra could be facilitated by varying the binding strength of a ligand to Rh in the precursor and/or the molecular weight of PVP to optimize the reduction kinetics. Colloidal barium-doped TiO2 nanocrystals have been developed that enable the highly reversible light-responsive color switching of redox dyes with excellent cycling performance and high switching rates. Oxygen vacancies resulting from the Ba doping serve as effective sacrificial electron donors (SEDs) to scavenge the holes photogenerated in TiO2 nanocrystals under UV irradiation and subsequently promote the reduction of methylene blue to its colorless leuco form. Effective color switching can therefore be realized without relying on external SEDs, thus greatly increasing the number of switching cycles. Ba doping can also accelerate the recoloration under visible-light irradiation by shifting the absorption edge of TiO2 nanocrystals to a shorter wavelength. Such a system can be further casted into a solid film to produce a rewritable paper on which letters and patters can be repeatedly printed using UV light and then erased by heating; this process can be repeated for many cycles and does not require additional inks. Pd icosahedra with sizes controlled in the range of 5-35 nm were synthesized in high purity through a combination of polyol reduction and seed-mediated growth. The Pd icosahedra were obtained with purity >94 % and uniform sizes controlled in the range of 5-17 nm by using ethylene glycol as both the reductant and solvent. The studies indicate that the formation of Pd nanocrystals with an icosahedral shape was very sensitive to the reaction kinetics. The success of this synthesis relies on the use of HCl to manipulate the reaction kinetics and thus control the twin structure and shape of the resultant nanocrystals. The size of the Pd icosahedra could be further increased up to 35 nm by seed-mediated growth, with 17 nm Pd icosahedra serving as seeds. The multiply twinned Pd icosahedra could grow into larger sizes, and their shape and multiply twinned structure were preserved. Thanks to the presence of twin defects, the Pd icosahedra showed a catalytic current density towards formic-acid oxidation that was 1.9 and 11.6 times higher than that of single-crystal Pd octahedra, which were also fully covered by {111} facets, and commercial Pd/C, respectively. Since the idea of using ionic liquids (ILs) as lubricants was raised in 2001, many studies have been conducted in this area and results have demonstrated superior lubricating performance for a variety of ILs. It is widely believed that a protective tribo-boundary film is formed on the contact area by tribochemical reactions between the metal surface and the IL during the wear process and, as a result, reduces friction and wear. However, the study of this critical boundary film in the literature has been limited to two-dimensional topography examination and chemical analysis from the top surface. This study demonstrates a multi-technique three-dimensional approach to characterize the boundary films on IL-lubricated metallic surfaces. The complementary characterizations at the top surface, cross-section, and different layers of the boundary film provide direct measurement of the film thickness, visualization of the nanostructure, and analysis of the composition change. The boundary films observed on different alloys are substantially distinct from both physical and chemical perspectives. The measured mean film thicknesses for cast iron, steel, and aluminum worn surfaces are 300, 60, and 200 nm, respectively. The boundary films on ferrous alloys are dominated by amorphous phase mixing with well-dispersed very fine (a few nm) nanocrystals, while the film on aluminum contains many larger size (tens of nm) metallic particles in a less organized manner. Abstract: Refractory Ti-bearing minerals in the calcium-, aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) Inti, recovered from the comet 81P/Wild 2 sample, were examined using analytical (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) methods including imaging, nanodiffraction, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Inti fassaite (Ca(Mg,Ti,Al)(Si,Al)2O6) was found to have a Ti3+/Ti4+ ratio of 2.0±0.2, consistent with fassaite in other solar system CAIs. The oxygen fugacity () of formation estimated from this ratio, assuming equilibration among phases at 1509K, is −19.4±1.3. This value is near the canonical solar nebula value (−18.1±0.3) and in close agreement with that reported for fassaite-bearing Allende CAIs (−19.8±0.9) by other researchers using the same assumptions. Nanocrystals of osbornite (Ti(V)N), 2–40nm in diameter, are embedded as inclusions within gehlenite, spinel and diopside in Inti. Vanadium is heterogeneously distributed within some osbornite crystals. Compositions range from pure TiN to Ti0.36V0.64N. The possible presence of oxide and carbide in solid solution with the osbornite was evaluated. The osbornite may contain O, but C is not present at detectable levels. The presence of osbornite, likely a refractory early condensate, together with the other refractory minerals in Inti, indicates that the parent comet contains solids that condensed closer to the proto-sun than the distance at which the parent comet itself accreted. The estimated oxygen fugacity and the reported isotopic and chemical compositions are consistent with Inti originating in the inner solar system like other meteoritic CAIs. These results provide insight for evaluating the validity of models of radial mass transport dynamics in the early solar system. The oxidation environments inferred for the Inti mineral assemblage are inconsistent with an X-wind formation scenario. In contrast, radial mixing models that allow accretion of components from different heliocentric distances can satisfy the observations from the cometary CAI Inti. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
