Cancer is a disease of global importance. In order to mitigate conventional chemotherapy-related side effects, phytochemicals with inherent anticancer efficacy have been opted. However, the use of nanotechnology is essential to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of these phytochemicals. Herein, we have formulated folic acid conjugated polyacrylic acid capped mesoporous silica nanoparticles (∼47.6 nm in diameter) for pH-dependent targeted delivery of chrysin to breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. Chrysin loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Chr- mSiO 2 @PAA/FA) have been noted to induce apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through oxidative insult and mitochondrial dysfunction with subsequent G 1 arrest. Further, in tumor bearing mice, intravenous incorporation of Chr-mSiO 2 @PAA/FA has been noticed to enhance the anti-neoplastic effects of chrysin via tumor site-specific accumulation. Enhanced cytotoxicity of chrysin contributed towards in vivo tumor regression, restoration of normalized tissue architecture and maintenance of healthy body weight. Besides, no serious systemic toxicity was manifested in response to Chr-mSiO 2 @PAA/FA administration in vivo. Aims: Synthesis of novel drug delivery system for targeted delivery of cuminaldehyde to breast cancer cells and the subsequent analyses of anti-neoplastic potential of the drug., Main Methods: 3-carboxy-phenyl boronic acid (PBA) conjugated and polyacrylic acid (PAA) gated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were synthesized for the targeted delivery of cuminaldehyde (CUM) to breast cancer cells. Enhancement of anti-neoplastic effects of cuminaldehyde (4-isopropylbenzaldehyde) by the nanoconjugates was assessed., Key Findings: The anti-cancer effects of non-targeted and targeted drug-nanoconjugates were examined in vitro and in vivo. The targeted drug-nanoconjugates caused cell cycle arrest and induced the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through mitochondrial damage. In vivo intravenous injection of the targeted drug-nanoconjugates led to effective reduction in growth of 4 T1 induced mammary pad tumor in female BALB/c mice via augmented accumulation of cuminaldehyde. Recently, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) are gaining much interest of nanobiotechnologists due to their profound biomedical applications. ZnONPs are used as antibacterial agents, which cause both gram-positive and negative bacterial cell death through the generation of reactive free radicals as well as membrane rupture. ZnONPs show excellent antioxidant properties in normal mammalian cells via the scavenging of reactive free radicals and up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme activities. Besides, it also shows hypoglycaemic effect in diabetic animals via pancreatic β-cells mediated increased insulin secretion and glucose uptake by liver, skeletal muscles and adipose tissues. Among the other potential applications, ZnONPs-induced bone and soft-tissue regeneration open a new horizon in the field of tissue engineering. Here, first we reviewed the complete synthesis routes of ZnONPs by physical, chemical, and biological pathways as well as outlined the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques. Further, we discussed the several important aspects of physicochemical analysis of ZnONPs. Additionally, we extensively reviewed the important biomedical applications of ZnONPs as antibacterial, antioxidant, and antidiabetic agents, and in the field of tissue engineering with special emphasis on their mechanisms of actions. Herein, we have evaluated the in vivo therapeutic efficacy and systemic toxicity profile of a synthetic anticancer compound [3,3'-((4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)methylene)bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione)]. A multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) based drug delivery network was also fabricated which specifically showed targeting nature towards the cancer cell. The mesopores of silica nanoparticles were tagged with phenyl boronic acid (PBA) for targeted drug delivery into tumor tissue. 1j was then loaded inside the nanocarriers followed by pore blocking with gold nanoparticles (GN) to attain a redox-responsive controlled drug delivery pattern. The synthesized nanocarriers (1j@-MSN-PBA-GN) having mean diameter of ~86 nm exhibited a moderate 1j loading content of 13.68% with overall negative surface charge. Both the targeted and non-targeted nanoformulations were tested for their anticancer activities both in vitro and in vivo models, and found more effective as compared with free 1j treatment. However, the targeted nanoformulations showed higher therapeutic effect due to increased cellular internalization and caused mitochondria-dependent apoptosis in MCF-7 cells via oxidative stress. Besides, the targeted nanoformulation significantly inhibited in the development of solid tumor in comparison to non-targeted nanoformulations and free 1j as a consequence of increased internalization of the drug-candidate in tumor tissue. Therefore, this study proposes that 1j can be considered as a potent anti-carcinogenic compound in vivo and its therapeutic potential is further increased by using PBA functionalized and GN gated MSN-based controlled drug delivery system without showing any significant systemic toxicity., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. In recent years, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) emerged as an excellent candidate in the field of optical, electrical, food packaging and particularly in biomedical research. ZnONPs show cancer cell specific toxicity via the pH-dependent (low pH) dissolution into Zn 2+ ions, which generate reactive oxygen species and induce cytotoxicity in cancer cells. Further, ZnONPs have also been used as an effective carrier for the targeted delivery of several anticancer drugs into tumor cells. The increasing focus on ZnONPs resulted in the development of various synthesis approaches including chemical, pHysical, and green or biological for the manufacturing of ZnONPs. In this article, at first we have discussed the various synthesis methods of ZnONPs and secondly its biomedical applications. We have extensively reviewed the anticancer mechanism of ZnONPs on different types of cancers considering its size, shape and surface charge dependent cytotoxicity. Photoirradiation with UV light or NIR laser further increase its anticancer activity via synergistic chemo-photodynamic effect. The drug delivery applications of ZnONPs with special emphasis on drug loading mechanism, stimuli-responsive controlled release and therapeutic effects have also been discussed in this review. Herein, a mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) based biocompatible, targeted and controlled drug delivery system has been synthesized for tumor tissue-specific drug delivery. Umbelliferone, a natural coumarin derivative was loaded into the pores of MSN and capped with pH-sensitive poly acrylic acid (PAA). For targeted delivery of umbelliferone in tumor tissue, folic acid (FA) was grafted onto the surface of drug-loaded and PAA-coated MSN. The successful construction of the nanohybrid (Umbe@MSN-PAA-FA) was confirmed by performing a series of characterization. The synthesized pH-responsive nanohybrid showed diameter of around 50 nm with overall negative surface charge and drug loading content of 12.56%. In vitro study showed that the nanohybrid caused significant cytotoxicity through the induction of both oxidative stress as well as mitochondrial damage in folate receptor over-expressed in human breast cancer cell, MCF-7 compared with free umbelliferone. In vivo study also exhibited that the nanohybrid effectively reduced tumor growth in tumor-bearing mice compared with free umbelliferone due to the enlarged bioavailability of the drug in tumor tissue. Besides, the nanohybrid did not exhibit any significant sign of systemic toxicity in other vital organs. Background: Nanoceria has recently received much attention, because of its widespread biomedical applications, including antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer activity, drug/gene delivery systems, anti-diabetic property, and tissue engineering., Main Body: Nanoceria exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria via the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In healthy cells, it acts as an antioxidant by scavenging ROS (at physiological pH). Thus, it protects them, while in cancer cells (under low pH environment) it acts as pro-oxidant by generating ROS and kills them. Nanoceria has also been effectively used as a carrier for targeted drug and gene delivery in vitro and in vivo models. Besides, nanoceria can also act as an antidiabetic agent and confer protection towards diabetes-associated organ pathophysiology via decreasing the ROS level in diabetic subjects. Nanoceria also possesses excellent potential in the field of tissue engineering. In this review, firstly, we have discussed the different methods used for the synthesis of nanoceria as these are very important to control the size, shape and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio of the particles upon which the physical, chemical, and biological properties depend. Secondly, we have extensively reviewed the different biomedical applications of nanoceria with probable mechanisms based on the literature reports., Conclusion: The outcome of this review will improve the understanding about the different synthetic procedures and biomedical applications of nanoceria, which should, in turn, lead to the design of novel clinical interventions associated with various health disorders.

Nanocarriers are widely used for effective delivery of anticancer drugs to tumours with potential to improve cancer treatment. Here, we developed a nanoceria (CeO 2 )-based system for delivery of the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) to human ovarian cancer cells. Negatively charged nanoceria could conjugate with the cationic DOX via electrostatic interaction under physiological conditions, forming DOX-loaded nanoceria (CeO 2 /DOX). CeO 2 /DOX particles displayed nearly spherical shapes, along with superior drug-loading content (22.41%), loading efficiency (99.51%), and higher cellular uptake and drug release behaviours compared to free DOX. Moreover, DOX was released faster from CeO 2 /DOX under reductive acidic conditions (pH 5.0, 10 mM glutathione) than under physiological conditions (pH 7.4). The initial intracellular DOX concentration was higher in the free DOX groups than in the CeO 2 /DOX groups, but quickly reduced to 25% of the initial concentration after 24-h culture. By contrast, CeO 2 /DOX showed sustained DOX release over time and maintained a high intracellular DOX concentration for up to 72 h. In vitro assays showed that CeO 2 /DOX exhibited higher cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis compared with free DOX. These results highlight DOX-loaded nanoceria as a promising therapeutic agent for cancer treatment.

Background: Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) offer technological advantages for a variety of industrial and consumer products as well as show promise for biomedical applications. Recent progress in the field of nanotechnology has led to increased exposure to nanoparticles by humans. To date, little is known about the adverse effects of these ENPs on reproductive health, although interest in nanotechnology area is growing. A few biocompatible ENPs have a high loading capacity for exogenous substances, including drugs, DNA or proteins, and can selectively deliver molecular cargo into cells; however, they represent a potential tool for gene delivery into gametes and embryos., Objective and Rationale: Understanding the reprotoxicological aspects of these ENPs is of the utmost importance to reliably estimate its potential impact on human health. In addition, a search for protective agents to combat ENP-mediated reproductive toxicity is warranted. Therefore, in this review we summarize the toxic effects of a few ENPs (metal and metal oxides, carbon-based nanoparticles, quantum dots and chitosan) in mammalian germ cells and developing embryos, and propose some treatment strategies that could mitigate nanoparticle-mediated toxicity. In addition, we outline the anticipated applications of ENPs in transgenic animal production in order to generate models for investigations into the mechanisms for human disease., Search Methods: A literature search was performed using the National Center for Biotechnology Information PubMed database up until March 2016 and relevant keywords were used to obtain information regarding mammalian germ cell-specific toxicity and embryotoxicity of ENPs, possible treatment strategies, as well as the anticipated applications of nanoparticles in gene delivery in germ cells and embryos. Only English language publications were included., Outcomes: Here, we demonstrate the toxicological effects of ENPs in mammalian germ cells and developing embryos by considering both in vitro and in vivo experimental models based on the existing literature. The biodistribution and cellular uptake of ENPs and the observed toxicities are mostly dependent on ENP size and surface-coating agents (surface functional groups/surface charge). ENPs have been shown to induce toxicity via oxidative stress, inflammation and DNA damage in both human and mouse germ cells. Use of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory drugs and selective metal chelators would be beneficial against nanoparticle-induced toxicity., Wider Implications: Our review provides the reproductive scientists a mechanistic insight into the reprotoxicological aspects of ENPs to reliably estimate its potential impact on human health and help to select/design protective agents to combat ENP-mediated toxicity. Furthermore, research regarding the detailed mechanism(s) of ENP toxicity in mammalian germ cells and developing embryos as well as the search for protective agents to combat ENP-mediated reproductive toxicity is warranted. Gene therapy is a promising technique for the treatment of various diseases. The development of minimally toxic and highly efficient non-viral gene delivery vectors is the most challenging undertaking in the field of gene therapy. Here, we developed dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB)-nanoceria (CeO2) hybrids as a new class of non-viral gene delivery vectors. These DODAB-modified CeO2 nanoparticles (CeO2/DODAB) could effectively compact the pDNA, allowing for highly efficient gene transfection into the selected cell lines. The CeO2/DODAB nanovectors were also found to be non-toxic and did not induce ROS formation as well as any stress responsive and pro-survival signaling pathways. The overall vector performance of CeO2/DODAB nanohybrids was comparable with lipofectamine and DOTAP, and higher than calcium phosphate and DEAE-dextran for transfecting small plasmids. The increased cellular uptake of the nanovector/DNA complexes through clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis and subsequent release from the endosomes further support the increased gene transfection efficiency of the CeO2/DODAB vectors. Besides, CeO2/DODAB nanovectors could transfect genes in vivo without any sign of toxicity. Taken together, this new nano-vector has the potential to be used for gene delivery in biomedical applications.

Solid tumors are frequently associated with resistance to chemotherapy because the fraction of hypoxic tumor cells is substantial. To understand the underlying mechanism of hypoxia on silver nanoparticle (AgNPs)-induced apoptosis, the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, a hallmark of hypoxia, was measured in the presence and absence of AgNPs. The results showed that HIF-1α expression was upregulated after AgNPs treatment under both hypoxic and normoxic conditions. Cell viability assays showed that AgNPs promoted cell death in cancer cells but not in non-cancer cells, as cancer cells are slightly more acidic than normal cells. However, reactive oxygen species generation induced by AgNPs in lung cancer cells caused high susceptibility to oxidative stress, whereas pre-exposure to hypoxia blocked AgNPs-induced oxidative stress. Notably, HIF-1α inhibited AgNPs-induced mitochondria-mediated apoptosis by regulating autophagic flux through the regulation of ATG5, LC3-II, and p62. Further, cell viability after treatment of cancer cells with AgNPs under hypoxic conditions was lower in HIF-1α siRNA-transfected cells than in control siRNA-transfected cells, indicating that HIF-1α knockdown enhances hypoxia induced decrease in cell viability. Our results suggest that hypoxia-mediated autophagy may be a mechanism for the resistance of AgNPs-induced apoptosis and that strategies targeting HIF-1α may be used for cancer therapy.

The emergence of diseases and mortalities in aquaculture and development of antibiotics resistance in aquatic microbes, has renewed a great interest towards alternative methods of prevention and control of diseases. Nanoparticles have enormous potential in controlling human and animal pathogens and have scope of application in aquaculture. The present investigation was carried out to find out suitable nanoparticles having antimicrobial effect against aquatic microbes. Different commercial as well as laboratory synthesized metal and metal oxide nanoparticles were screened for their antimicrobial activities against a wide range of bacterial and fungal agents including certain freshwater cyanobacteria. Among different nanoparticles, synthesized copper oxide (CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO), silver (Ag) and silver doped titanium dioxide (Ag-TiO2) showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity. On the contrary, nanoparticles like Zn and ZnO showed antifungal activity against fungi like Penicillium and Mucor species. Since CuO, ZnO and Ag nanoparticles showed higher antimicrobial activity, they may be explored for aquaculture use.

Activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription3 (STAT3) is a hallmark of several types of cancer. Failure to inhibit STAT3 expression by injection of siRNA for STAT3 directly to Balb/c mice led us to adopt alternative means. We formulated nanoparticle-based encapsulation of siRNA (NsiRNA) with polyethylenimine (PEI) and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and characterized them. The siRNA treated and NsiRNA-treated cells were subjected separately to different assay systems. We also checked if NsiRNA could cross the blood brain barrier (BBB). Cell viability reduced dramatically in A549 cells after NsiRNA administration (23.89% at 24 h), thereby implicating considerable silencing of STAT3 by NsiRNA, but not after siRNA administration. Compared to controls, a significant decrease in expression of IL-6 and the angiogenic factor (VEGF) and increase in Caspase 3 activity was observed with corresponding regression in tumor growth in mice treated with NsiRNA. NsiRNA induced apoptosis of cells and arrested cells at G1/G0 stage, both in vitro and in vivo. Apoptosis was also verified by Annexin-V-FITC/Propidium-iodide staining. NsiRNA could cross blood brain barrier. Skin cancer is increasing at an alarming rate and becoming resistant to conventional chemotherapy necessitating improved drug delivery system. We loaded apigenin (Ap), a dietary flavonoid having anti-cancer property, with poly (lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NAp) to explore if nano-encapsulation could enhance anti-carcinogenic effect against ultra-violet B (UVB) and Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) induced skin tumor and mitochondrial dysfunction in mice. Particle size, morphology and zeta potential of NAp were determined using dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. Tumor incidence and multiplicity in UVB-BaP induced mice with/without NAp treatment were ascertained and their histolopathological sections and chromosomal aberrations were studied. ROS accumulation and mitochondrial functioning through relevant markers like mitochondrial transmembrane potential were analyzed. Mitochondrial volume changes/swelling, cytochrome c (cyt c) release, mRNA and protein expressions of Apaf-1, bax, bcl-2, cyt c, cleaved caspase-9 and 3 were studied. Results showed that NAp produced better effects than Ap, due to their smaller size, and faster mobility. NAp reduced tissue damage and frequency of chromosomal aberrations, increased ROS accumulation to mediate mitochondrial-apoptosis through modulation of several apoptotic markers and mitochondrial matrix swelling. The aim of the present study was the evaluation of anti-proliferative potentials of apigenin (Ap), (a dietary flavonoid) loaded in poly (lactic-co-glycolide) nanoparticles (NAp) in A375 cells in vitro. NAp was characterized for particle size, morphology, zeta potential, drug release and encapsulation. Cellular entry and intracellular localization of NAp were assessed by transmission electron and confocal microscopies. Circular dichroic spectral analysis and stability curve for Gibb's free energy of dsDNA of A375 cells were also analyzed. DNA fragmentation, intracellular ROS accumulation, superoxide-dismutase activity, intracellular glutathione-reductase content and mitochondrial functioning through relevant markers like mitochondrial transmembrane potential, ATPase activity, ATP/ADP ratio, volume changes/swelling, cytochrome-c release, expressions of Apaf-1, bax, bcl-2, caspase-9, 3, and PARP cleavage were analyzed. NAp produced better effects due to their smaller size, faster mobility and site-specific action. Photostability studies revealed that PLGA encapsulations were efficient at preserving apigenin ultraviolet-light mediated photodegradation. NAp readily entered cancer cells, could intercalate with dsDNA, inducing conformational change. Corresponding increase in ROS accumulation and depletion of the antioxidant enzyme activities exacerbated DNA damage, mediating apoptosis through mitochondrial dysfunction. Overall results indicate that therapeutic efficacy of NAp may be enhanced by PLGA nanoparticle formulations to have better ameliorative potentials in combating skin melanoma., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Diabetes is a menacing problem, particularly to inhabitants of groundwater arsenic contaminated areas needing new medical approaches. This study examines if PLGA loaded nano-insulin (NIn), administered either intraperitoneally (i.p.) or through oral route, has a greater cost-effective anti-hyperglycemic potential than that of insulin in chronically arsenite-fed hyperglycemic mice. The particle size, morphology and zeta potential of nano-insulin were determined using dynamic light scattering method, scanning electronic and atomic force microscopies. The ability of the nano-insulin (NIn) to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was also checked. Circular dichroic spectroscopic (CD) data of insulin and nano-insulin in presence or absence of arsenic were compared. Several diabetic markers in different groups of experimental and control mice were assessed. The mitochondrial functioning through indices like cytochrome c, pyruvate-kinase, glucokinase, ATP/ADP ratio, mitochondrial membrane potential, cell membrane potential and calcium-ion level was also evaluated. Expressions of the relevant marker proteins and mRNAs like insulin, GLUT2, GLUT4, IRS1, IRS2, UCP2, PI3, PPARγ, CYP1A1, Bcl2, caspase3 and p38 for tracking-down the signaling cascade were also analyzed. Results revealed that i.p.-injected nano-encapsulated-insulin showed better results; NIn, due to its smaller size, faster mobility, site-specific release, could cross BBB and showed positive modulation in mitochondrial signaling cascades and other downstream signaling molecules in reducing arsenic-induced-hyperglycemia. CD data indicated that nano-insulin had less distorted secondary structure as compared with that of insulin in presence of arsenic. Thus, overall analyses revealed that PLGA nano-insulin showed better efficacy in combating arsenite-induced-hyperglycemia than that of insulin and therefore, has greater potentials for use in nano-encapsulated form., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. The capability of crude ethanolic extracts of certain medicinal plants like Phytolacca decandra, Gelsemium sempervirens, Hydrastis canadensis and Thuja occidentalis used as homeopathic mother tinctures in precipitating silver nanoparticles from aqueous solution of silver nitrate has been explored. Nanoparticles thus precipitated were characterized by spectroscopic, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, atomic force and transmission electron microscopic analyses. The drug-DNA interactions of silver nanoparticles were analyzed from data of circular dichroism spectroscopy and melting temperature profiles using calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) as target. Biological activities of silver nanoparticles of different origin were then tested to evaluate their effective anti-proliferative and anti-bacterial properties, if any, by exposing them to A375 skin melanoma cells and to Escherichia coli C, respectively. Silver nanoparticles showed differences in their level of anti-cancer and anti-bacterial potentials. The nanoparticles of different origin interacted differently with CT-DNA, showing differences in their binding capacities. Particle size differences of the nanoparticles could be attributed for causing differences in their cellular entry and biological action. The ethanolic extracts of these plants had not been tested earlier for their possible efficacies in synthesizing nanoparticles from silver nitrate solution that had beneficial biological action, opening up a possibility of having therapeutic values in the management of diseases including cancer., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. In the modern medicine nano particle has been used as a power tool but recently it has been established that nano particle pathophysiologically affects different organs. Recently, we have investigated the role of copper nano particle in liver dysfunction. In the literature, practically little is known about the nano-copper induced renal dysfunction. We, therefore, conducted the present study as a continuation of our earlier one to investigate the molecular mechanism in nano-copper induced kidney dysfunction. Nano-copper exposure increased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and altered the levels of oxidative stress related biomarkers in kidney tissue. Signal transduction mechanism studies showed that nano copper exposure reciprocally regulated Bcl-2 family protein expression, disturbed mitochondrial membrane potential and subsequently helped releasing cytochrome c from mitochondria to cytosol. Apoptotic nature of cell death is confirmed by activation of caspases 3 which is also supported by histological study. In addition, we also observed the activation of Fas, caspase 8 and tBid in kidney tissue in this pathophysiology, suggesting the involvement of extrinsic pathways. Compared to enzymes, Au nanocatalysts show better long-term stability and are more easily prepared. Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used as catalytic labels to achieve ultrasensitive DNA detection via fast catalytic reactions. In addition, magnetic beads (MBs) are employed to permit low nonspecific binding of DNA-conjugated AuNPs and to minimize the electrocatalytic current of AuNPs as well as to take advantage of easy magnetic separation. In a sandwich-type electrochemical sensor, capture-probe-conjugated MBs and an indium-tin oxide electrode modified with a partially ferrocene-modified dendrimer act as the target-binding surface and the signal-generating surface, respectively. A thiolated detection-probe-conjugated AuNP exhibits a high level of unblocked active sites and permits the easy access of p-nitrophenol and NaBH 4 to these sites. Electroactive p-aminophenol is generated at these sites and is then electrooxidized to p-quinoneimine at the electrode. The p-aminophenol redox cycling by NaBH 4 offers large signal amplification. The nonspecific binding of detection-probe-conjugated AuNPs is lowered by washing DNA-linked MB-AuNP assemblies with a formamide-containing solution, and the electrocatalytic oxidation of NaBH 4 by AuNPs is minimized because long-range electron transfer between the electrode and the AuNPs bound to MBs is not feasible. The high signal amplification and low background current enable the detection of 1 fM target DNA.

This communication reports a nanocatalyst-based electrochemical assay for proteins. Ultrasensitive detection has been achieved by signal amplification combined with noise reduction: the signal is amplified both by the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol by gold-nanocatalyst labels and by the chemical reduction of p-quinone imine to p-aminophenol by NaBH4; the noise is reduced by employing an indium tin oxide electrode modified with a ferrocenyl-tethered dendrimer and a hydrophilic immunosensing layer.

We report on the non-resonant microwave absorption in the system of a nominal 2 wt % nano nickel particles added into YBCO powders (Ni-YBCO). With this dilute mixture of nano nickel particles, one is expected to have groups of normal Josephson junctions (JJs) and π JJs due to YBCO-nickel-YBCO interparticle weak links and as nickel is ferromagnetic. We experimentally show, for the first time multiple phase reversals in the non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) spectra from Ni-YBCO possibly due to the formation of π JJs. We also showed that these multiple phase reversals then depend on microwave power and temperature. We argue that microwave power induced coherence among some groups of JJs and breaking of some of the weaker JJs can then lead to the disappearance of multiple phase reversals at higher microwave power levels. Further, we also reported a role of pair breaking effects that shall give a linear field dependence of the derivative microwave absorption signal, essentially which is the NRMA signal. Abstract: We show room temperature plasticity in several ZrCu-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG) after dispersions of crystalline nanoparticles were generated prior to mechanical testing. BMGs are heated in synchrotron light in transmission such that annealing can be interrupted at the very first detection of nucleation of the crystallites. Effect of embedded nanocrystals on the mechanical properties of BMG-Composites was investigated by compressive testing. When nanocrystal dispersions were generated, zirconium–copper-based BMGs that initially showed no plastic deformation prior to fracture, exhibited ductile behavior in compression with about 10% deformation.
