Fate and transport of nanoplastics in aquatic environments are affected by their heteroaggregation with minerals in the presence of macromolecules. This study investigated the heteroaggregation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) with goethite nanoparticles (GNPs) under the influence of macromolecules [humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and DNA] and electrolytes. Under 1 mg C/L macromolecule, raising electrolyte concentration promoted heteroaggregation via charge screening, except that calcium bridging with HA also enhanced heteroaggregation at CaCl 2 concentration above 5 mM. At all NaCl concentrations and CaCl 2 concentration below 5 mM, 1 mg C/L macromolecules strongly retarded heteroaggregation, ranking BSA > DNA > HA. Raising macromolecule concentration strengthened such stabilization effect of all macromolecules in NaCl solution and that of DNA and BSA in CaCl 2 solution by enhancing steric hindrance. However, 0.1 mg C/L BSA slightly promoted heteroaggregation in CaCl 2 solution due to stronger electrostatic attraction than steric hindrance. In CaCl 2 solution, raising HA concentration strengthened its destabilization effect via calcium bridging. Macromolecules having more compact globular structure and higher molecular weight may exert greater steric hindrance to inhibit heteroaggregation more effectively. Titanium and its alloys have been widely used as bone implants, but for reduced treatment span, improvements are urgently needed to achieve faster and better osteointegration. In this study, we found that miR-132-3p inhibited bone-marrow-derived stem cell (BMSC) osteogenic differentiation via targeting BMP2, and that inhibiting miR-132-3p could significantly improve the osteogenic capability of BMSCs. Moreover, we fabricated a biocompatible selenomethionine (SEMET)-modified polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polyethylenimine (PEI) nanoparticle (SeNP) cross-linked with 0.2% gelatin solutions and delivered miR-132-3p inhibitor to biofunctionalize alkali heat-treated titanium implants, resulting in the development of a novel coating for reverse transfection. The biological performances of PEG/PEI/miR-132-3p inhibitor and SeNP/miR-132-3p inhibitor-biofunctionalized titanium were compared. The biological effects, including cell viability, cytotoxicity, adhesion, cellular uptake, and osteogenic capacity of SeNP/miR-132-3p inhibitor-biofunctionalized titanium implants, were then assessed. Results showed that SeNPs presented appropriate morphology, diameter, and positive zeta potential for efficient gene delivery. The transfection efficiency of the SeNP/miR-132-3p inhibitor was comparable to that of the PEG/PEI/miR-132-3p inhibitor, but the former induced less reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lower apoptosis rates. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) demonstrated that SeNP/miR-132-3p inhibitor nanoparticles released from the titanium surfaces and were taken up by adherent BMSCs. In addition, the release profile showed that transfection could obtain a long-lasting silencing effect for more than 2 weeks. The cell viability, cytotoxicity, and cell spreading of SeNP/miRNA-132-3p inhibitor-biofunctionalized titanium were comparable with those of untreated titanium and the SeNP/miRNA-132-3p inhibitor negative control (NC)-biofunctionalized titanium but resulted in higher ALP activity and osteogenic gene expression levels. In vivo animal studies further certified that SeNP/miRNA-132-3p inhibitor nanoparticles from titanium surfaces promoted osteointegration, which was revealed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) and histological observations. Taken together, these findings suggested that selenomethionine-modified PEI-based nanoparticles could achieve better biocompatibility. Moreover, titanium implants biofunctionalized by SeNP/miRNA-132-3p inhibitor nanoparticles might have significant clinical potential for more effective osteointegration.

CO oxidative coupling to dimethyl oxalate (DMO) is an important approach for the product of ethylene glycol and CO elimination. In this work, the Co doped Pd/Al2O3 nanocatalyst was highly effective for CO oxidative coupling and enhanced remarkably CO conversion and the formation of DMO. The maximum DMO STY reached 1082 g L−1 h−1 over the Pd/Al2O3@1/20Co catalyst at 130 °C for 2 h under the space velocity of 3000 h−1, which is two times higher than that over the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. The Co modification and its influence on the structure of the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst were also studied systematically by XRD, TEM, CO‐TPD, N2 physical adsorption and XPS techniques. An appropriate Co doing was confirmed to promote distinctly the generation of smaller Pd particles and the adjustment of the adsorption or activation of CO over the catalyst. A positive interaction between Pd nanoparticles and the modulated support with Co doping was demonstrated and favored the enhanced activity of the catalyst for the reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heteroaggregation between polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and soot nanoparticles (STNPs) in aquatic environments may affect their fate and transport. This study investigated the effects of particle concentration ratio, electrolytes, pH, and humic acid on their heteroaggregation kinetics. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC) ranked CCC PSNPs > CCC PSNPs-STNPs > CCC STNPs , indicating that heteroaggregation rates fell between homoaggregation rates. In NaCl solution, as the PSNPs/STNPs ratio decreased from 9/1 to 3/7, heteroaggregation rate decreased and CCC PSNPs-STNPs increased from 200 to 220 mM due to enhanced electrostatic repulsion. Outlier was observed at PSNPs/STNPs= 1/9, where CCC PSNPs-STNPs = 170 mM and homoaggregation of STNPs dominated. However, in CaCl 2 solution where calcium bridged with STNPs, heteroaggregation rate increased and CCC PSNPs-STNPs decreased from 26 to 5 mM as the PSNPs/STNPs ratio decreasing from 9/1 to 1/9. In composite water samples, heteroaggregation occurred only at estuarine and marine salinities. Acidic condition promoted heteroaggregation via charge screening. Humic acid retarded or promoted heteroaggregation in NaCl or CaCl 2 solutions by steric hindrance or calcium bridging, respectively. Other than van der Waals attraction and electrostatic repulsion, heteroaggregation was affected by steric hindrance, hydrophobic interactions, π − π interactions, and calcium bridging. The results highlight the role of black carbon on colloidal stability of PSNPs in aquatic environments. Nanoplastics derived from degradation of micro- or macroplastics are emerging contaminants in aquatic environments, where their fate and transport as well as toxicity are affected by aggregation. This study employed time-resolved dynamic light scattering to investigate the aggregation kinetics of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) in the presence of four macromolecules (sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), and Suwannee River humic acid (HA)) in solutions containing monovalent (NaCl) and divalent (CaCl 2) salts at different pH. Our results showed that the macromolecules enhanced PSNP stability in NaCl solutions but destabilized PSNPs in CaCl 2 solutions at pH 6. In NaCl solutions, macromolecules inhibited PSNP aggregation due to steric hindrance originated from macromolecular layer adsorbed on PSNPs. The strongest stabilization effect was observed for BSA having the greatest hydrodynamic adsorption layer thickness of 21.9 nm, followed by HA, EPS, and SA. In CaCl 2 solutions, SA significantly destabilized PSNPs via alginate bridging with Ca2+, which enhanced with concentrations of SA and CaCl 2. The destabilization effects of other three macromolecules in CaCl 2 solutions were governed by the interplay among molecular bridging, charge screening, and steric hindrance. An increased pH in NaCl or CaCl 2 solutions containing macromolecules all stabilized PSNPs due to elevated electrostatic repulsion, except that SA destabilized PSNPs in CaCl 2 solutions via enhanced molecular bridging. The stabilization effect of macromolecules may also compete with the destabilization effect under seawater condition.
