Regulation of antibiotic use in aquaculture calls for the emergence of more sustainable alternative treatments. Tea polyphenols (GTE), particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have various biological activities. However, tea polyphenols are susceptible to degradation. In this work, EGCG and GTE were encapsulated in zein nanoparticles (ZNP) stabilized with alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CS) to reduce the degradation effect. ALG-coated ZNP and ALG/CS-coated ZNP encapsulating EGCG or GTE were obtained with a hydrodynamic size of less than 300 nm, an absolute ζ-potential value >30 mV, and an encapsulation efficiency greater than 75%. The antioxidant capacity of the encapsulated substances, although lower than that of the free ones, maintained high levels. On the other hand, the evaluation of antimicrobial activity showed greater efficiency in terms of growth inhibition for ALG/CS-ZNP formulations, with average overall values of around 60%, reaching an inhibition of more than 90% for Photobacterium damselae. These results support encapsulation as a good strategy for tea polyphenols, as it allows maintaining significant levels of antioxidant activity and increasing the potential for antimicrobial activity, in addition to increasing protection against sources of degradation., (© 2024. The industrial application and environmental release of nickel oxide NPs (NiO NPs) is increasing, but the details of their relationship with plants are largely unknown. In this work, the cellular, tissue, organ, and molecular level responses of three ecotypes of Ni hyperaccumulator Odontarrhena lesbiaca grown in the presence of high doses of NiO NP (250 mg/L and 500 mg/L) were studied. All three ecotypes showed a similar accumulation of Ni in the presence of nano Ni, and in the case of NiO NPs, the root-to-shoot Ni translocation was slighter compared to the bulk Ni. In all three ecotypes, the walls of the root cells effectively prevented internalization of NiO NPs, providing cellular defense against Ni overload. Exposure to NiO NP led to an increase in cortex thickness and the deposition of lignin-suberin and pectin in roots, serving as a tissue-level defense mechanism against excessive Ni. Exposure to NiO NP did not modify or cause a reduction in some biomass parameters of the Ampeliko and Loutra ecotypes, while it increased all parameters in Olympos. The free salt form of Ni exerted more negative effects on biomass production than the nanoform, and the observed effects of NiO NPs can be attributed to the release of Ni ions. Nitric oxide and peroxynitrite levels were modified by NiO NPs in an ecotype-dependent manner. The changes in the abundance and activity of S-nitrosoglutathione reductase protein triggered by NiO NPs suggest that the enzyme is regulated by NiO NPs at the post-translational level. The NiO NPs slightly intensified protein tyrosine nitration, and the slight differences between the ecotypes were correlated with their biomass production in the presence of NiO NPs. Background: Multidrug resistance is a common reason behind the failure of chemotherapy. Even if the therapy is effective, serious adverse effects might develop due to the low specificity and selectivity of antineoplastic agents. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are promising materials for tumor-targeting and drug-delivery due to their small size, relatively inert nature, and extremely large specific surfaces that can be functionalized by therapeutic and targeting entities. We aimed to create a fluorescently labeled MSN-based drug-delivery system and investigate their internalization and drug-releasing capability in drug-sensitive MCF-7 and P-glycoprotein-overexpressing multidrug-resistant MCF-7 KCR cancer cells., Methods and Results: To track the uptake and subcellular distribution of MSNs, particles with covalently coupled red fluorescent Rhodamine B (RhoB) were produced (RhoB@MSNs). Both MCF-7 and MCF-7 KCR cells accumulated a significant amount of RhoB@MSNs. The intracellular RhoB@MSN concentrations did not differ between sensitive and multidrug-resistant cells and were kept at the same level even after cessation of RhoB@MSN exposure. Although most RhoB@MSNs resided in the cytoplasm, significantly more RhoB@MSNs co-localized with lysosomes in multidrug-resistant cells compared to sensitive counterparts. To examine the drug-delivery capability of these particles, RhoB@Rho123@MSNs were established, where RhoB-functionalized nanoparticles carried green fluorescent Rhodamine 123 (Rho123) - a P-glycoprotein substrate - as cargo within mesopores. Significantly higher Rho123 fluorescence intensity was detected in RhoB@Rho123@MSN-treated multidrug-resistant cells than in free Rho123-exposed counterparts. The exceptional drug-delivery potential of MSNs was further verified using Mitomycin C (MMC)-loaded RhoB@MSNs (RhoB@MMC@MSNs). Exposures to RhoB@MMC@MSNs significantly decreased the viability not only of drug-sensitive but of multidrug-resistant cells and the elimination of MDR cells was significantly more robust than upon free MMC treatments., Conclusion: The efficient delivery of Rho123 and MMC to multidrug-resistant cells via MSNs, the amplified and presumably prolonged intracellular drug concentration, and the consequently enhanced cytotoxic effects envision the enormous potential of MSNs to defeat multidrug-resistant cancer., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work., (© 2022 Igaz et al.)

The nanomaterial industry generates gigantic quantities of metal-based nanomaterials for various technological and biomedical applications; however, concomitantly, it places a massive burden on the environment by utilizing toxic chemicals for the production process and leaving hazardous waste materials behind. Moreover, the employed, often unpleasant chemicals can affect the biocompatibility of the generated particles and severely restrict their application possibilities. On these grounds, green synthetic approaches have emerged, offering eco-friendly, sustainable, nature-derived alternative production methods, thus attenuating the ecological footprint of the nanomaterial industry. In the last decade, a plethora of biological materials has been tested to probe their suitability for nanomaterial synthesis. Although most of these approaches were successful, a large body of evidence indicates that the green material or entity used for the production would substantially define the physical and chemical properties and as a consequence, the biological activities of the obtained nanomaterials. The present review provides a comprehensive collection of the most recent green methodologies, surveys the major nanoparticle characterization techniques and screens the effects triggered by the obtained nanomaterials in various living systems to give an impression on the biomedical potential of green synthesized silver and gold nanoparticles.

Cell wall-associated defence against zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as well as nitro-oxidative signalling and its consequences in plants are poorly examined. Therefore, this study compares the effect of chemically synthetized ZnO NPs (~45 nm, 25 or 100 mg/L) on Brassica napus and Brassica juncea seedlings. The effects on root biomass and viability suggest that B. napus is more tolerant to ZnO NP exposure relative to B. juncea. This may be due to the lack of Zn ion accumulation in the roots, which is related to the increase in the amount of lignin, suberin, pectin and in peroxidase activity in the roots of B. napus. TEM results indicate that root cell walls of 25 mg/L ZnO NP-treated B. napus may bind Zn ions. Additionally, callose accumulation possibly contribute to root shortening in both Brassica species as the effect of 100 mg/L ZnO NPs. Further results suggest that in the roots of the relatively sensitive B. juncea the levels of superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitric oxide, peroxinitrite and S-nitrosoglutathione increased as the effect of high ZnO NP concentration meaning that ZnO NP intensifies nitro-oxidative signalling. In B. napus; however, reactive oxygen species signalling was intensified, but reactive nitrogen species signalling wasn't activated by ZnO NPs. Collectively, these results indicate that ZnO NPs induce cell wall remodeling which may be associated with ZnO NP tolerance. Due to their release into the environment, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) may come in contact with plants. In elevated concentrations, ZnO NPs induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, but the metabolism of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and the consequent nitro-oxidative signalling has not been examined so far. In this work, Brassica napus and Brassica juncea seedlings were treated with chemically synthetized ZnO NPs (∼8 nm, 0, 25 or 100 mg/L). At low dose (25 mg/L) ZnO NP exerted a positive effect, while at elevated concentration (100 mg/L) it was toxic to both species. Additionally, B. juncea was more tolerant to ZnO NPs than B. napus. The ZnO NPs could enter the root cells due to their small (∼8 nm) size which resulted in the release of Zn 2+ and subsequently increased Zn 2+ content in the plant organs. ZnO NPs disturbed superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide homeostasis and modulated ROS metabolic enzymes (NADPH oxidase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbate and glutathione) inducing similar changes in oxidative signalling in both Brassica species. The homeostasis of RNS (nitric oxide, peroxynitrite and S-nitrosoglutathione) was also altered by ZnO NPs; however, changes in nitrosative signalling proved to be different in the examined species. Moreover, ZnO NPs triggered changes in protein carbonylation and nitration. These results suggest that ZnO NPs induce changes in nitro-oxidative signalling which may contribute to ZnO NP toxicity. The chronic responses of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) to the presence of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO NPs) (5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 mg/L of GO NPs for 7 days) during biological wastewater treatment processes were investigated. Bioreactor performance, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, and microbial community characteristics were assessed. The results showed that the effects of GO NPs on bioreactor performances were dependent on the dose applied and the duration for which it was applied. At concentrations of 55, 75, and 95 mg/L, GO NPs considerably inhibited the efficiency of organic matter and ammonia removal; however, nitrite and nitrate removal rates were unchanged. Biological phosphorus removal decreased even when only low concentrations of GO NPs were used. The secretion of EPS, which could alleviate the toxicity of GO NPs, also changed. The increased amount of nanoparticles also resulted in significant changes to the bacterial community structure. Incomplete information on toxicological differences of micro- and nanometer-sized particles raised concerns about the effects of the latter on health and environment. Besides chemical composition, size and surface-to-volume ratio of nanoparticles (NPs) can affect toxicity. To investigate size-dependent toxicity differences, we used particles made of dioxide of the neurotoxic heavy metal manganese (Mn), typically found in inhaled metal fumes, in three size ranges (size A, 9.14 ± 1.98 nm; size B, 42.36 ± 8.06 nm; size C, 118.31 ± 25.37 nm). For modeling the most frequent route of exposure to Mn, NPs were given to rats for 6 weeks by intratracheal instillation. Of each NP size, 3 or 6 mg/kg body weight was given while control animals were vehicle treated. Neurotoxicity was assessed by measuring spontaneous locomotor activity in an open field and by recording spontaneous and evoked electrical activity from the somatosensory cortical area. Mn content of brain, lung, and blood, measured by ICP-MS, were correlated to the observed functional alterations to see the relationship between Mn load and toxic effects. Body weight gain and organ weights were measured as general toxicological indices. The toxicity of size A and size B NPs proved to be stronger compared to size C NPs, seen most clearly in decreased body weight gain and altered spontaneous cortical activity, which were also well correlated to the internal Mn dose. Our results showed strong effect of size on NP toxicity, thus, beyond inappropriateness of toxicity data of micrometer-sized particles in evaluation of NP exposure, differentiation within the nano range may be necessary.

In an attempt to model occupational and environmental Mn exposures and their possible interaction, young male Wistar rats were exposed to Mn by oral administration in dissolved form (MnCl(2)·4H(2)O, 14.84 and 59.36 mg/kg b.w.) and by intratracheal application of MnO(2) nanoparticles (2.63 mg/kg b.w.). After 3 and 6 weeks oral, or 3 weeks oral plus 3 weeks intratracheal, exposure, general toxicological, and electrophysiological tests were done. Body weight gain was significantly reduced after 6 and 3 plus 3 weeks exposure, but the effect of the latter on the pace of weight gain was stronger. Organ weights signalized systemic stress and effect on lungs. Changes in evoked electrophysiological responses (cortical sensory evoked potential and nerve action potential) indicated that the 3 plus 3 weeks combined exposure caused equal or higher changes in the latency of these responses than 6 weeks of exposure, although the calculated summed Mn dose in the former case was lower. The results showed the importance of the physicochemical form of Mn in determining the toxic outcome, and suggested that neurofunctional markers of Mn action may indicate the human health effect better than conventional blood Mn measurement.

Airborne metal-containing particles represent a known source of health risk but the role of nano-sized particles in the pathogenicity of dust has been recognized only recently. As a model of inhalational exposure to manganese, adult male Wistar rats were treated with a suspension of MnO(2) nanoparticles of ca. 23 nm diameter, instilled into the trachea for 3, 6, and 9 weeks in daily doses of 2.63 and 5.26 mg Mn/kg, and endpoints of functional neurotoxicity (open field behavior and electrophysiology) and general toxicity (body and organ weights) were investigated. Weekly body weighing showed that control rats had normal weight gain but the treated rats' body weight failed to increase from the 6th week on. Dissection and organ weighing after the corresponding treatment periods revealed dose- and time-dependently increased relative lung weights. In brain and blood samples, significantly elevated Mn level was detected after 9 weeks exposure. The treated rats' open field behavior showed decreased ambulation and rearing, and increased local activity and immobility. Electrophysiological investigations after 9 weeks exposure indicated a shift of the spontaneous cortical activity to higher frequencies, lengthened cortical evoked potential latency, and slowed nerve conduction. Several of these general and neuro-functional parameters were significantly correlated to the tissue Mn levels. Instilled Mn in nanoparticle form was indeed absorbed and exerted neurotoxic effects, so the model seems suitable for studying the effects of airborne nanoparticles, relevant to human health., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Due to the widespread applications of metal nanoparticles (NPs), green synthesis strategies have recently advanced, e.g., methods that utilize extracts made from different plant wastes. A particularly innovative approach to reducing large amounts of available household/agricultural green wastes is their application in nanoparticle generation. Regarding this, the aim of our work was to examine the possibility of upgrading green nanoparticle syntheses from an innovative economic and environmental point of view, namely by investigating the multiple recyclabilities of green tea (GT), coffee arabica (CA), and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) (VC) waste residues for iron nanoparticle (FeNPs) synthesis. The plant extracts obtained by each extraction round were analyzed individually to determine the amount of main components anticipated to be involved in NPs synthesis. The synthesized FeNPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The activity of the generated FeNPs in degrading chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC) and thus their future applicability for remediation purposes were also assessed. We have found that VC and especially GT residues could be reutilized in multiple extraction rounds; however, only the first extract of CA was suitable for FeNPs' generation. All of the obtained FeNPs could degrade VOC with efficiencies GT1-Fe 91.0%, GT2-Fe 83.2%, GT3-Fe 68.5%; CA1-Fe 76.2%; VC1-Fe 88.2%, VC2-Fe 79.7%, respectively, where the number (as in GT3) marked the extraction round. These results indicate that the adequately selected green waste material can be reutilized in multiple rounds for nanoparticle synthesis, thus offering a clean, sustainable, straightforward alternative to chemical methods. Effective oxidative transformation of toluene into valuable products was achieved under solvent‐free reaction conditions with as‐prepared nickel nanoparticles as heterogeneous catalysts in liquid phase. The crystalline structure and size of the as‐prepared nanoparticles were confirmed by X‐ray diffractometry (XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The catalytic implications of the different crystalline forms (face‐centred cubic: fcc; hexagonal close‐packed: hcp) of these nanocatalysts were investigated. The product selectivity of toluene oxidation was found to vary depending on the crystalline forms of the catalyst. Fcc nanocatalysts showed remarkable chemoselectivity (83 mol %) for the product benzyl alcohol and were readily reusable. In contrast, the hcp Ni phase showed reasonable reusability but lower chemoselectivity (29 mol %) compared to its fcc counterpart. Moreover, the simple organic solvents used had a remarkable effect on the crystal structure and phase purity of the Ni nanocrystals, which also affected the catalytic process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanochemistry is a method that can cover the energy demand of reaction pathways between solid materials. This requires enough energy to maintain the reactions between the starting materials. This is called "high-energy milling". In our case, a planetary ball mill provided the required energy. Using the Burgio-equation, the required energy is determinable; the energy released during a single impact of a milling ball (Eb), as well as during the whole milling process (Ecum). The aim of this work was the one-step production of BaTiO3 from BaO and TiO2 starting materials. Whereas during mechanochemical reactions it is possible to produce nanoparticles of up to 10 nm, the essence of this study is to develop the preparation of BaTiO3 with a perovskite structure even without subsequent heat treatment, since sintering at high temperatures is associated with a rapid increase in the size of the particles. By describing the synthesis parameters and their energy values (Eb and Ecum), it is possible to transpose experimental conditions, so that in the case of other types of planetary ball mills or grinding vessel made of other materials, the results can be used. In this study, the mechanical treatment was carried out with a Fritsch Pulverisette-6 planetary ball mill and the transformation of the starting materials was investigated by X-ray diffractometric, Raman and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic, and transmission electron microscopic measurements. Several ecdysteroid acetonides act as adjuvant chemo-sensitizing agents against various cancer cell lines, and they can be formulated to self-assembling nanoparticle (NP) pro-drugs through a hydrolysable conjugation with squalene. In the bloodstream such squalenoylated nanoparticles dissolve into low-density lipoprotein (LDL) that allows targeting tissues containing high levels of LDL-receptors. In this work, ajugasterone C 2,3;20,22-diacetonide (3) and 11α-hydroxypoststerone 2,3-acetonide (4) were squalenoylated to obtain two new ecdysteroid pro-drugs (6 and 7) and their nano-assemblies (6NP and 7NP). A complete NMR signal assignment of 6 and 7 was achieved. Interaction of compounds 3 and 4 with chemotherapeutics was studied by the Chou-Talalay method. Compound 3 showed strong synergism with doxorubicin on a multi-drug resistant lymphoma cell line. In contrast, its nanoassembly 6NP significantly decreased the cytotoxicity of doxorubicin on these MDR cells, strongly suggesting that at least the 2,3-acetonide group was cleaved by the acidic pH of lysosomes after endocytosis of the prodrug. Further, compound 4 acted in strong antagonism with paclitaxel on MCF-7 cells and its nanoassemby 7NP also protected MCF-7 cells from the effect of paclitaxel. Our results suggest that acid-resistant A-ring substitution would be crucial to design adjuvant antitumor squalenoylated ecdysteroid prodrugs. Additionally, our results may be considered as a serendipitous discovery of a novel way to deliver cytoprotective, adaptogen ecdysteroids to healthy tissues with upregulated LDL-R. Background: Although accumulating evidence suggests that the crosstalk between malignant cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) actively contributes to tumour growth and metastatic dissemination, therapeutic strategies targeting tumour stroma are still not common in the clinical practice. Metal-based nanomaterials have been shown to exert excellent cytotoxic and anti-cancerous activities, however, their effects on the reactive stroma have never been investigated in details. Thus, using feasible in vitro and in vivo systems to model tumour microenvironment, we tested whether the presence of gold, silver or gold-core silver-shell nanoparticles exerts anti-tumour and metastasis suppressing activities by influencing the tumour-supporting activity of stromal fibroblasts. Results: We found that the presence of gold-core silver-shell hybrid nanomaterials in the tumour microenvironment attenuated the tumour cell-promoting behaviour of CAFs, and this phenomenon led to a prominent attenuation of metastatic dissemination in vivo as well. Mechanistically, transcriptome analysis on tumour-promoting CAFs revealed that silver-based nanomaterials trigger expressional changes in genes related to cancer invasion and tumour metastasis. Conclusions: Here we report that metal nanoparticles can influence the cancer-promoting activity of tumour stroma by affecting the gene expressional and secretory profiles of stromal fibroblasts and thereby altering their intrinsic crosstalk with malignant cells. The brain insulin metabolism alteration has been addressed as a pathophysiological factor underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insulin can be beneficial in AD, but its macro-polypeptide nature negatively influences the chances of reaching the brain. The intranasal (IN) administration of therapeutics in AD suggests improved brain-targeting. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA NPs) are promising carriers to deliver the IN-administered insulin to the brain due to the enhancement of the drug permeability, which can even be improved by chitosan-coating. In the present study, uncoated and chitosan-coated insulin-loaded SLNs and PLGA NPs were formulated and characterized. The obtained NPs showed desirable physicochemical properties supporting IN applicability. The in vitro investigations revealed increased mucoadhesion, nasal diffusion, and drug release rate of both insulin-loaded nanocarriers over native insulin with the superiority of chitosan-coated SLNs. Cell-line studies on human nasal epithelial and brain endothelial cells proved the safety IN applicability of nanoparticles. Insulin-loaded nanoparticles showed improved insulin permeability through the nasal mucosa, which was promoted by chitosan-coating. However, native insulin exceeded the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeation compared with nanoparticulate formulations. Encapsulating insulin into chitosan-coated NPs can be beneficial for ensuring structural stability, enhancing nasal absorption, followed by sustained drug release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cadmium (Cd) is a metal used in various industrial applications, thereby causing exposure to Cd-containing fumes. The submicron-sized particles in the fumes represent an extra risk due to their high mobility within the organism and high surface area. Toxicity of Cd on the liver, kidney and bones is well known, but there are less data on its neurotoxicity. Here, male Wistar rats were treated for 3 and 6 weeks by intratracheal instillation of cadmium oxide nanosuspension. The body weight gain in treated rats was significantly decreased, and in the rats treated with high dose (0.4 mg/kg Cd daily), there was a significant increase in the weight of lungs and thymus. In this group, the spectrum of spontaneous cortical electrical activity was shifted to higher frequencies, the latency of sensory-evoked potentials was lengthened, and the frequency following ability of the somatosensory evoked potential was impaired—even without detectable Cd deposition in the brain. The data support the role of the nano-sized Cd in the causation of nervous system damage and show the possibility of modeling human neurotoxic damage in rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context and objective: Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal harmful for human health and environment. From leaded gasoline (still used in certain countries), and in Pb processing and reprocessing industries, airborne particles are emitted which can be inhaled. In such exposure, the size of particles entering the airways is crucial. The nervous system is a primary target for Pb, and consequences like occupational neuropathy and delayed mental development of children are well-known. The aim of this work was to investigate the neurotoxicity of Pb nanoparticles (NPs) applied into the airways of rats. Methods: Nano-sized lead oxide particles (mean diameter ca. 20 nm) were suspended in distilled water and instilled into the trachea of adult male Wistar rats (in doses equivalent to 2 and 4 mg/kg Pb), 5 times a week for 3 and 6 weeks. At the end, open field motility was tested, then central and peripheral nervous activity was recorded in urethane anesthesia. Results and conclusion: The treated rats'' body weight gain was significantly lower than that of the controls from the 3rd week onwards, and the weight of their lungs was significantly increased. Horizontal motility increased while vertical motility decreased. Spontaneous cortical activity was shifted to higher frequencies. The somatosensory cortical evoked potential showed increased latency and decreased frequency-following ability, and similar alterations were seen in the tail nerve. Significant Pb deposition was measured in blood, brain, lung and liver samples of the treated rats. We report on a method for the controlled synthesis of a new type of high specific surface area mesoporous carbons denoted as the CMH family. By using mixtures of colloidal silica particles as templates it was possible to synthesize samples exhibiting 1,630 m2 g−1 specific surface area and 4.37 cm3 g−1 pore volume. CMH materials exhibit high thermal stability in oxygen and can be used as catalyst supports. This function was demonstrated by synthesizing Pt/CMH and Rh/CMH catalysts and testing them in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene. We have found Pt/CMH to be more stable and easier to regenerate than Rh/CMH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The toxicity of manganese-containing airborne particles is an important occupational and environmental problem. In this work, adult male Wistar rats were treated with a nanosuspension of MnO2 of approximately 23 nm nominal particle diameter, instilled into the trachea for 3, 6, and 9 wk in doses of 2.63 and 5.26 mg Mn/kg. The animals’ body weight was checked weekly. At the end of treatment, the rats’ spontaneous motility was tested in an open field box. Then, spontaneous and stimulus-evoked cortical activity and action potential of the tail nerve were recorded in urethane anesthesia. The rats were finally dissected, organs weights were measured, and the presence of excess Mn in lung and brain samples was determined using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. While control rats had normal weight gain, the body weights of the treated rats ceased to grow from wk 6 on. The relative weight of the lungs increased in the treated rats, and that of the liver decreased, in a dose- and time-dependent manner; Mn was detected in their lung and brain samples. In the open field activity, the percentage of ambulation and rearing decreased while local activity and immobility increased. The latency of the evoked potentials was lengthened, and the conduction velocity of the tail nerve decreased. These results indicate that the Mn content of instilled nanoparticles had access from the airways to the brain, and the resulting damage could be investigated in animals using neuro-functional and general toxicological endpoints. In the experimental work leading to this contribution, the parameters of the ultrasound treatment (temperature, output power, emission periodicity) were varied to learn about the effects of the sonication on the crystallization of Ni nanoparticles during the hydrazine reduction technique. The solids were studied in detail by X-ray diffractometry, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetry, specific surface area, pore size analysis, temperature-programmed CO2/NH3 desorption and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the thermal behaviour, specific surface area, total pore volume and the acid-base character of the solids were mainly determined by the amount of the nickel hydroxide residues. The highest total acidity was recorded over the solid under low-power (30 W) continuous ultrasonic treatment. The catalytic behaviour of the nanoparticles was tested in a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction over five samples prepared in the conventional as well as the ultrasonic ways. The ultrasonically prepared catalysts usually performed better, and the highest catalytic activity was measured over the nanoparticles prepared under low-power (30 W) continuous sonication. Manganese oxide containing nanoparticles (MnOx NPs) have emerged as promising antimicrobial and anticancer agents due to their unique properties. However, the different initial materials and synthesis techniques often yield nanoparticles with highly different properties which limit their applications especially in the biomedical field. Thus, we aimed to explore the suitability of pyrolusite as a new and sustainable manganese mineral source for MnOx production. Moreover, we examined the effect of various synthesis methods on the physicochemical characteristics and biological activity of MnOx NPs to explore their therapeutic utilization potential against microbes and in cancer treatment. We produced MnOx NPs from a naturally occurring mineral via mechanochemical, chemical, and electrochemical processes, characterized them thoroughly, and assessed their cytotoxicity against bacteria, fungi, and human cancerous and non-cancerous cells. We verified that the synthesis method utilized to obtain MnOx NPs impacted significantly nanoparticle properties leading to distinct structural, morphological, and biological characteristics. Although none of the particles was effective against the tested bacterial strains, electrochemically produced NPs demonstrated significant antifungal activity. These nanoparticles were also the most potent anticancer agents, exhibiting cancer-selective toxicity attributed to apoptosis induction rather than altered cell proliferation or direct necrotic effects. These results are relevant for the development of effective and safe nanotherapeutics and highlight the potential of MnOx nanoparticles - obtained through carefully selected initial mineral source and adequate synthetic approach - in antimicrobial and anticancer therapy. The size of carbon nanotube supported Pd and PdO nanoparticles was investigated on oxidatively functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes. All samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The average particle diameter calculated from TEM image analysis was found to be inversely proportional with the duration of the oxidation in nitric acid. Abstract: Trititanate nanotubes were prepared from anatase TiO2 in 10M Na2S solution kept at 130°C for 2 weeks. On the basis of this reaction, we devised a novel synthesis method which allows the preparation of titanate nanotubes decorated with CdS nanoparticles in one step. The key feature of the suggested method is controlling the rate of CdS formation by introducing Cd2+ ions as a Cd–EDTA complex into the synthesis mixture. The nanotubes obtained are several hundred nm long, tend to aggregate into rod-like structures and are fully covered by CdS nanoparticles with an average diameter of ∼5.3nm. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The visible light photoelectrical properties of a p-type mesoporous nickel oxide (MNO) support was investigated upon the decoration of size controlled, 1.6 nm, 6.4 nm and 7.9 nm Pt nanoparticles. The near room temperature photoelectrical response of the MNO was 3 times higher after decoration of 1.6 nm Pt nanoparticles with a loading of 1 wt%. MNO decorated with smaller Pt nanoparticles showed the highest photoresponse. The surrounding atmosphere has striking effect on the photoelectrical behavior, as adsorbed oxygen induced 32% lower photoelectrical response compared to that of argon. The noble metal nanoparticles show both electronic and chemical sensitization: the first functioning as an electron sink resulting in a new band structure of the photocatalyst, and the second interacting chemically with the oxygen and argon adsorbed from the environment. A model is proposed using heterojunctions theory comprising a new induced oxygen potential that may explain the lower photoresponse in the presence of oxygen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Mechanochemical synthesis of NiCuSn nanoparticles and composites was carried out. • The effect of milling parameters (intensity, duration) was elucidated. • Formation of NiSn and CuSn intermetallics, and Cu/Sn-oxide species was observed. • Cu, Cu 2 O or bronze facilitated 1,3-diyne formation by terminal alkyne homocoupling. • Sn and SnO 2 containing catalysts were efficient in ketone and α-diketone synthesis. We report the synthesis of the NiCuSn nanoparticles and nanocomposites in mechanochemical route using CTAB as milling additive. The study of grinding intensity (frequency) and time interval drew up the importance of the well-chosen operation parameters. The mild milling resulted in formation of NiSn intermetallics, while the intense ones aided the evolution of bronze and copper(I) oxide phases. The utilization of CTAB proved to be the key factor to prevent or slow down the process of mechanical alloying and to fritter the metal grains into the nanodimensions. The dynamic light scattering data demonstrated positively charged particles with average solvodynamic diameters of around 70 nm applying intense or long-term millings. Without CTAB or with relatively short or weak grindings, these values remained between 230 and 550 nm, as in the case of the surface areas getting around 20 m2/g with and 1 m2/g without CTAB. The catalytic transformation of p -methoxyphenylacetylene in dimethyl sulfoxide showed that the copper, copper(I) oxide and bronze particles managed the reaction toward the evolution of 1,3-diyne in Glaser-Hay homocoupling without base addition, while the Sn and SnO 2 phases assisted to the Markovnikov-type hydration of alkyne groups. The formation of α-diketone signed that the anti-Markovnikov route was also occurred. The use of CTAB was found to exert a profound effect on the quality of catalytic end-products through the controlled generation of bronze and tin oxide phases and the solid solution of nickel atoms. The effects of reduction by H2 and by heat treatment in vacuum and in O2 flow on Rh particle size changes of Rh/CeO2 samples were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM), and CO adsorption followed by diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Low-temperature (373-423 K) reduction of Rh without agglomeration is demonstrated. An average particle size of 2.3 ± 1.1 nm was measured by HRTEM regardless of the metal loading (1-5%). On Rh/CeO2, a significant particle size increase of the Rh particles was detected on heating (773 K). In this work, we suggest that the temperature-induced surface decrease resulting from the sintering of Rh is favored only for well-dispersed particles. XP spectra revealed that the mobile oxygens of CeO2 fundamentally determine the oxidation state of the supported metals. At elevated temperature, the oxidation of the reduced support surface as well as the metal component takes place because of the segregation of ceria oxygens. When the aggregated particles were reoxidized, the redispersion of Rh was observed probably because of the formation of Rh-O-Ce bonds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Airborne manganese represents a major risk of nervous system damage first of all in industrial settings. The resulting effects may depend on the dose and physicochemical form of Mn. To compare the effect of soluble and nanoparticulate Mn, adult male rats received daily instillation of MnCl2 solution or MnO2 nanoparticle suspension (dose: 2.53mg Mn per rat) into the nasal cavity for 3 and 6 weeks. At the end of treatment, spontaneous open field motility was tested, electrophysiological recording was done in anesthesia, and brain tissue Mn level was determined. Metal level increase in the rats’ brain, body weight gain reduction, and decrease of open field motility was significant in the MnCl2, but not nano-Mn, treated rats. Most evoked cortical activity parameters were significantly altered in both groups, but spontaneous cortical activity spectrum only in the rats receiving MnCl2. There was fair correlation between brain Mn levels and certain neuro-functional parameters, underlining the causal relationship. Electrophysiological tests might be more sensitive to the effects of Mn than general toxicological or neurobehavioral tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Ion-exchangable titanate nanotubes synthesized by the alkali treatment of TiO2 (anatase) were rendered photochemically active by decorating them with CdS nanoparticles through a simple wet chemical process.
