Hyperoside (HYP) has various potential benefits, however, its low water-solubility and poor bioavailability have restricted its application. Here, HYP-loaded zein-tea polyphenols (TP)-pectin ternary complex nanoparticles (Z/TP/P-HYP) were prepared by the antisolvent precipitation method for HYP delivery. The formed Z/TP/P-HYP are negatively charged spherical particles with a size of 246 nm, and have the highest HYP encapsulation efficiency (94.2%) at TP was 0.25 mg/mL. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic effects were major interactions to Z/TP/P-HYP formation. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed that encapsulated HYP was in an amorphous state. Freeze-dried Z/TP/P-HYP displayed good water-redispersibility and high particle yield (95.2%). Z/TP/P-HYP exhibited improved pH (2.0-8.0) and ionic (0-500 mM) stability. Furthermore, Z/TP/P-HYP demonstrated stronger antioxidant properties than free HYP and provided HYP sustained release under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Targeting single mediators has failed to reduce the mortality of sepsis. We developed a telodendrimer (TD) nanotrap (NT) to capture various biomolecules via multivalent, hybrid and synergistic interactions. Here, we report that the immobilization of TD-NTs in size-exclusive hydrogel resins simultaneously adsorbs septic molecules, e.g. lipopolysaccharides (LPS), cytokines and damage- or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs/PAMPs) from blood with high efficiency (92-99%). Distinct surface charges displayed on the majority of pro-inflammatory cytokines (negative) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (positive) allow for the selective capture via TD NTs with different charge moieties. The efficacy of NT therapies in murine sepsis is both time-dependent and charge-dependent. The combination of the optimized NT therapy with a moderate antibiotic treatment results in a 100% survival in severe septic mice by controlling both infection and hyperinflammation, whereas survival are only 50-60% with the individual therapies. Cytokine analysis, inflammatory gene activation and tissue histopathology strongly support the survival benefits of treatments.

Wheat bran is an abundant source of cellulose and is still going to waste because of the lack of knowledge about its further exploitation and comprehensive utilisation. Here, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared from wheat bran via sulfuric acid hydrolysis. The effects of hydrolysis time on the morphology, surface charge, yield, structure, thermal stability, physicochemical properties, and cytotoxicity of CNC were investigated. Results showed that non-cellulosic components were extensively removed by the purification process. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the obtained CNC displayed a needle-like shape with various dimensions. Zeta potential values of the CNC suspensions ranged from -36.5 to -39.8 mV. A hydrolysis time of 60 min resulted in CNC with the highest crystallinity (70.32%). The thermal stability of CNC shifted to lower temperature with increasing hydrolysis time. In addition, the obtained CNC exhibited interesting physicochemical properties (the water/oil retention capacities and the adsorption capacities to heavy metals) and good biocompatibility, suggesting their great potential as reinforcement for the manufacture of nanocomposites., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. We develop a new strategy of using surface functionalized small molecule organic dye nanoparticles (NPs) for targeted cell imaging. Organic dye (2-tert-butyl-9,10-di(naphthalen-2-yl)anthracene, TBADN) was fabricated into NPs and this was followed by surface modification with an amphipathic surfactant poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene)-polyethylene glycol (C18PMH-PEG) through hydrophobic interactions to achieve good water dispersibility and bio-environmental stability. It should be noted that no additional inert materials were added as carriers, thus the dye-loading capacity of the resulting TBADN NPs is obviously higher than those of previously reported carrier-based structures. This would lead to much larger absorption and then much higher brightness. The resulting TBADN NPs possess comparable, if not higher, brightness than CdSe/ZnS quantum dots under the same conditions, with favorable biocompatibility. Significantly, TBADN NPs are readily conjugated with folic acid, and successfully applied in targeted cell imaging. These results show that water dispersible and highly stable organic NPs would be a promising new class of fluorescent probe for bioapplications in cellular imaging and labeling. This strategy may be straightforwardly extended to other organic dyes to achieve water dispersible NPs for cell imaging and drug delivery.

In recent years, the experiments have revealed that plants raise the cytotoxicity and anticancer potentials of iron nanoparticles against several cell lines especially tumor cell lines. In the present study, we formulated a modern drug by iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) containing Glycyrrhiza glabra L leaf for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Characterization of FeNPs was done by TEM, FE‐SEM, UV–Vis, and FT‐IR. FE‐SEM and TEM images revealed an average diameter of 11–18 nm for the nanoparticles. UV–Vis revealed an absorption band at 298 nm that is related to the surface plasmon resonance of FeNPs. FT‐IR results offered antioxidant compounds in the nanoparticles were the sources of reducing power, reducing iron ions to FeNPs. MTT assay was used on normal (HUVEC) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT‐3, CEM/C2, TALL‐104, and CCRF‐CEM) cell lines for comparing the anti‐acute lymphoblastic leukemia properties of FeCl3, G. glabra, and FeNPs. Iron nanoparticles had very low cell viability dose‐dependently against MOLT‐3, CEM/C2, TALL‐104, CCRF‐CEM cell lines without any cytotoxicity on the HUVEC cell line. The best result of cytotoxicity property of FeNPs against the above cell lines was seen in the case of CCRF‐CEM cell line. Betulinic acid (BA) has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative stress, and antitumor activities, but BA bioavailability is low due to its poor water solubility and short half-life. This study aimed to construct a BA delivery system to improve its utilization in vitro. Glycosylated zein (G-zein) was prepared using the wet heating method, and BA-loaded zein composite nanoparticles were prepared using the antisolvent method. Compared to zein, G-zein had the advantages of higher solubility and lower surface hydrophobicity. The encapsulation efficiency of G-zein@BA reached over 80% when the BA concentration was 1 mg/mL. Compared to zein@BA nanoparticles, G-zein@BA was characterized by smaller droplets, higher encapsulation efficiency, and a more stable morphology. The sustained release and solubility of G-zein@BA nanoparticles were also superior to those of zein@BA. Compared with free BA, the dispersions of zein@BA and G-zein@BA nanoparticles in water increased 2.27- and 2.91-fold, respectively. In addition, zein@BA and G-zein@BA nanoparticles markedly inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells. This study provides new insights into the structural properties and antitumor activity of BA composite nanoparticles to aid in the development of zein particles as functional materials to deliver bioactive compounds. The efficient electrochemical oxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) requires the superior synergism of platinum (Pt) based composites, which depends on the formation of effective interface between the components. In this paper, Pt loaded on co‐supporter of TiN and N‐doped reduced graphene oxide (Pt/TiN @ N‐rGO) composite is obtained by an in situ calcination of TiN @ N‐rGO followed with the targeted growth of Pt nanoparticles at the junction of TiN|N‐rGO. As a result, Pt/TiN @ N‐rGO electrode with medium molar ratio of urea to TiCl4 (R =10) and the ideal ternary interface of Pt|few layered N‐rGO|TiN exhibited exceptionally high catalytic mass activity (343.9 mA mg−1 Pt) and long‐term durability (117 mA mg−1 Pt after continuous 1200 min operation) for EG oxidation in acid, compared to other Pt/TiN @ N‐rGO composites and commercial Pt/C (41.1 mA mg−1 Pt). The promoted performance is attributed to the synergies at ternary interface, involving the highest electrochemically active surface areas due to more exposed active sites of Pt nanoparticles, the best electrical conductivity ascribed to the incorporation of few layered N‐rGO, and excellent CO tolerance with the assistance of TiN. This work reports on the simple fabrication of a silver loaded and carbon doped zinc tantalate (Ag/C-ZnTa2O6) photocatalyst with visible light photocatalytic activity toward broad wastewater remediation, including high photo-reduction of Cr(VI) (98.4% in 210 min), excellent photo-oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride (94.7% in 210 min), and superior photo-degradation of multiple dyes (>99.0% within 210 min). The optimal photocatalytic performance of Ag/C-ZnTa2O6 is mainly due to the excellent visible light absorption capacity and superior electron–hole separation efficiency, which is ascribed to the complementary behavior between carbon doping and silver loading. Particularly, the generation of defects due to C-doping is greatly inhibited by Ag-loading, and the SPR effect of Ag nanoparticles is enhanced due to the obstruction of Ag+ by C doping. The properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite hydrogels influenced by nanoparticles are reviewed. Various kinds of nanoparticles with excellent mechanical and electrical properties have been introduced into PVA hydrogel to produce stretchable and conductive PVA nanocomposite hydrogel. Understanding the mechanism between the matrix of PVA hydrogel and nanoparticles is therefore critical for the development of PVA nanocomposite hydrogels. This review focuses on the nanoparticles include carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and metal nanoparticles, and describes the effects of nanoparticles on the mechanical and conductive properties of PVA nanocomposite hydrogels. A new promising area of soft stretchable PVA nanocomposite hydrogel is highlighted for possible applications. Finally, a brief outlook for future research is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Platinum (Pt) nanoassemblies with different morphologies, such as nanospheres self-assembled from nanoparticles, multipolyhedral nanostructures built with octahedral nanocrystals, hollow nanospheres consisting of armed nanoparticles, and two-dimensional arrays arranged by nanocubes, were synthesized by a solvothermal approach. The concentration gradient of Pt monomers plays a key role in the architecture of the self-assembled nanostructures, which is attributed to the weak dissolution of the Pt precursor in high-viscosity solvent. As a consequence, the electrode prepared from hollow Pt nanospheres consisting of armed nanoparticles shows much higher performance in the methanol electro-oxidation process than others. Meanwhile, the electrodes prepared from these novel Pt nanoassemblies exhibited long-term durability for methanol electro-oxidation, compared to the electrode prepared from monodispersed Pt nanoparticles. Pure and vanadium doped NaTaO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal conditions. From XRD studies, both pure as well as vanadium doped NaTaO3 are found to show pure orthorhombic phase of tatanlate. STEM studies show the formation of cube shape particles in all the samples with a particle size about 70 nm. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra clearly indicates the red-shift in the series of vanadium doped NaTaO3 catalysts, resulting in a decrease in the band gap of NaTaO3 caused by substitution of V5+ ions at Ta5+ site with an increase of vanadium doping concentration in NaTaO3. The results reveal that Vanadium doped NaTaO3 show good photocatalytic performance under visible light and RhodamineB (RB) degradation is improved with Vanadium doping. The photocatalytic mechanism was discussed by density functional theory. V5+ ions substitution of Ta5+ ions results in an intermediate band (IB) below the bottom of the conduction band (CB), which is mainly attributed to the state of V 3d. Meanwhile the broadening of valence band is formed due to the hybridization between the V 3d and O 2p states. Both these factors increase the transient behavior of the photogenerated charge carriers and inhibit the recombination of e–h+ pairs, showing enhanced activities over the entire visible region. Hyperoside (Hyp) exhibits a range of bioactive properties, but its application is restrained due to its poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability. In this study, a novel Hyp delivery system based on zein and pectin was prepared by an anti-solvent precipitation method to delivery of Hyp. The results showed that 91% optimized encapsulation efficiency of Hyp-zein/pectin composite nanoparticles (Hyp-Z/P NPs). Hyp-Z/P NPs formed core-shell spherical structures with a particle size of about 270 nm and zeta potential of −32.4 mV. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic effects were the main forces driving the formation of Hyp-Z/P NPs. X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that Hyp was encapsulated in an amorphous form. Freeze-dried Hyp-Z/P NPs displayed good redispersibility in aqueous solution. The DPPH• scavenging ability and ABTS•+ scavenging ability of Hyp-Z/P NPs were 3-fold and 1.8-fold higher than that of free Hyp, respectively. Furthermore, compared to Hyp-loaded zein nanoparticles, Hyp-Z/P NPs showed better stability and sustained release of Hyp under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Abstract A new type of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube embedded cobalt nanoparticles nanopolyhedra (Co-NCNTNP) electrocatalyst synthesized via pyrolysis bimetallic metal-organic frameworks was investigated to modify the activated carbon air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC). X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope characterization confirmed the combination of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube and transition metal element in Co-NCNTNP. Rotating disk electrode measurement revealed the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of as-prepared Co-NCNTNP was mainly proceeded via a four-electron pathway like Pt/C. When fabricated into activated carbon cathode, the optimized MFC reached the maximum power density of 2252 ± 46 mW m−2, which was 154% higher than that of control. Moreover, the resistance including total resistance and charge transfer resistance of modified cathode significantly decreased comparing to the control, which was beneficial to better MFC performance. Therefore, all attracting properties suggested that noble-metal-free and high-efficiency Co-NCNTNP could be considered as a Pt-alternative electrocatalyst for ORR in MFC. Smart charge‐reversible upconversion nanoparticles are reported on page 3077 by Zhuang Liu and co‐workers for pH‐responsive, in vivo, near‐infrared light excited photodynamic therapy. While stable under normal physiological pH, highly sensitive acid‐induced charge conversion of the nanoparticles is observed in a slightly acidic tumor microenvironment, resulting in significantly enhanced cellular internalization of nanoparticles and remarkably improved photodynamic cancer cell killing in vitro and in vivo. Abstract: This work reports a systematic study on bridging between structure and optimum luminescence for Ce1−x Gd x F3:Eu3+ nanoparticles. It is found that all Ce1−x Gd x F3:Eu3+ nanoparticles were nearly monodispersed, showing average grain diameter of 30–35nm. Regardless of the dopant level, all nanocrystals crystallized in a single hexagonal phase. With increasing Gd3+ content, the lattice dimension for Ce1−x Gd x F3:Eu3+ linearly decreased, which was followed by the highly distorted lattice symmetry surrounding Eu3+. The consequence of the structural modification is that the color purity was significantly improved. Furthermore, the excitation energy of Ce3+ in the ultraviolet range was efficiently transferred to Eu3+ ions via the sensitizer Gd3+, which significantly enhanced the red emission and showed a maximized quantum efficiency of 59.7%. Abstract Here, a simple two-step solvothermal approach has been employed to synthesize Pt Fe alloy (or Pt)/CeO 2 /C with Pt Fe (or Pt) selective loading on CeO 2 nanoparticles. In addition, the selective loading of Pt Fe alloy or Pt nanoparticles on the surface of CeO 2 is achieved under weak alkaline environment, which is mainly attributed to the opposite electrostatic force between H+ enriched on the surface of CeO 2 particles and OH− covered with carbon supporters. As-prepared Pt Fe alloy (or Pt)/CeO 2 /C catalysts with two-stage loading structures show more excellent electro-catalytic efficiency for methanol oxidation as well as duration compared with commercial Pt/C and Pt CeO 2 /C with random loading structure. Further, single-cell assembly based on Pt 3 Fe/CeO 2 /C as the anode catalyst exhibits a maximum power density of 31.1 mW cm−2, which is 1.95 times that of an analogous cell based on the commercial Pt/C. These improved performances with considerable low Pt content (<0.3 mg cm−2) are mainly ascribed to the abundant three phase interfaces (Pt CeO 2 carbon) induced by the selective and efficient dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on ceria. In order to reduce the cost of commercial visible-light photocatalyst, a self-assembly strategy was deployed in producing a Ti-coupled N-embedded chicken feather biochar based catalyst (TINCs). The TINCs were manufactured by blending Ti-contained cross-link agent with hydrolyzed N-embedded chicken feather. These synthesis materials were well characterized with X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscope, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Surface area analysis and UV–vis absorption spectra. There were multilayered graphene oxide-like structures observed on TINCs, which were similar to the TiO 2 -graphene oxide material. Correspondingly, the TINCs had presented a 90.91% degradation rate of Rhodamine B under visible-light after 240 min. The corresponding TOC of the solution had dropped by 56.26%. Every slice of TINCs was constituted by multilayered graphene oxide-like framework, interspersing with TiO 2 nanoparticles uniformly. Some mechanisms were also analyzed. In this work, a series of Au-loaded Na 2 Ta 2 O 6 nanocomposite photocatalysts were prepared via a chemical reduction process. It was observed the tiny Au nanoparticles (∼5 nm) uniformly anchored on the surface of Na 2 Ta 2 O 6 nanoparticles with a well crystallized octahedral morphology. The as-prepared samples demonstrated high efficiency and good recyclability toward reduction of toxic nitrobenzenes to nontoxic aminobenzene. Significantly, a very quickly rate of 2666.7 min −1 g −1 under the simulated solar light irradiation was observed for nitrobenzenes (NB) derivatives reduction. It was found 4-nitrophenol can be completely converted to 4- aminobenzene in only 4 min, 2.35 times higher than that in dark. By evaluate activities over several representative support materials under different reaction conditions, a new photo-synergistic catalytic mechanism was proposed. In the thermocatalytic process, the surface plasmons resonance of Au nanoparticles excited by visible light, and the electron transfer from Na 2 Ta 2 O 6 semiconductor to Au nanoparticle assisted by ultraviolet light, all make the significantly contributions to achieve the efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenol under solar illumination. Hydrotalcite-supported gold nanoparticles are studied as photocatalysts for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives without additional base under irradiation by visible light. The effects of the solvent, the hydrotalcite constitution and the gold content on the catalytic reaction are studied. The reactions utilizing benzotrifluoride as the solvent yield the best results. When varying the gold content and support, 2 wt% Au/HT-3 exhibits good catalytic activity. Furthermore, the rate of conversion under visible light is far superior to that in the dark. The catalytic activity can be tuned by manipulating the intensity or wavelength of the light. A reaction mechanism is proposed to rationalize these results: the primary reason for the lower activity observed on recycled catalysts is that the basic sites of hydrotalcite are decreased during the reaction in light. Abstract: This work presented a simple hydrothermal route based on polyoxometalate chemistry of niobium to prepare a novel red phosphor, K2GdNb5O15:Eu3+, with ultra-small size and high quantum efficiency. The red/orange (I 612/I 594) ratio of Eu3+ emission is 6.8, indicating high color purity and being nearly ideal for the red component in high luminous efficacy white LEDs. The as-measured quantum yield for K2GdNb5O15:Eu3+ nanoparticles is as high as 63% at Eu3+ concentration ~20%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Pt/TaON|N-rGO composite with targeted growth of Pt at the heterojunction of TaON|N-rGO exhibited high catalytic activity, excellent CO-tolerance and long-term durability for EG oxidation in acid due to the optimal ternary synergy. • TaON/N-rGO was obtained by the calcination of layered supramolecules. • Pt was induced by defects and loaded at TaON|N-rGO junctions. • Pt/TaON|N-rGO electrode exhibited optimal performances in EGOR. • The improved performance was due to the synergy in the ternary interface. For platinum (Pt) composite electrocatalysts formed by multiple components, the selective growth of Pt on oxygen-containing species can maximize the CO-resistance and durability, which is a big challenge in interfacial science. In this paper, Pt/TaON|N-rGO composite was obtained by an in-situ calcination of a layered supramolecule self-assembled by TaCl 5 , urea and n-butanol, followed with the targeted growth of Pt nanoparticles induced by the defects at the junction of TaON|N-rGO. As a result, Pt/TaON|N-rGO electrode with the ideal ternary interface of Pt|TaON|N-rGO exhibited exceptionally high catalytic mass activity (250.6 mA·mg−1Pt), excellent CO-tolerance (I f /I b = 1.6 normalized to Pt/C) and long-term durability (136.4 mA·mg−1Pt after continuous 1200 min operation) for EG oxidation in acid, compared to commercial Pt/C (57.8 mA·mg−1Pt). The promoted performance was attributed to the synergies at ternary interface of Pt|TaON|N-rGO, and the boosting CO-tolerance was achieved by the shortened L-H pathway ascribed to the selective growth of Pt nanoparticles on the heterojunction of TaON|N-rGO. Pt based catalysts with multi-component is widely used to improve the electrocatalytic ability in alcohol oxidation, however, it is still big challenge to maximize the synergies of different component. Herein, Pt/N-rGO/Nb 4 N 5 composites with multilayered structure were prepared, with nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) layer covered on Nb 4 N 5 sheet and Pt nanoparticles selective loaded on the interface of Nb 4 N 5 and N-rGO. Furthermore, N-rGO was confirmed to act as the connector between Pt and Nb 4 N 5 , ascribed to the Nb 4 N 5 –N-rGO-Pt bridge via N-doping of graphene and partial oxidation of Pt. By comparison, Pt/N-rGO/Nb 4 N 5 -10 composite showed the best distribution of N-doped rGO in the gap between Pt nanoparticles and Nb 4 Nb 5 sheet, as the ratio of urea and NbCl 5 was 10. Accordingly, Pt/N-rGO/Nb 4 N 5 -10 electrode exhibited the optimal catalytic activity and durability for multiple alcohol oxide in acid, such as methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol, since maximum ternary synergy was achieved by the stable multilayered structure, involving the highest ESCAs due to more exposed active sites of Pt nanoparticles, the best electrical conductivity ascribed to the incorporation of N-rGO, and excellent CO tolerance because of the efficient activation of water on Nb 4 N 5 and N-rGO. Pt/N-rGO/Nb 4 N 5 composite with multilayered structure and compact and stable interface between Pt, N-rGO layer and Nb 4 N 5 was provided with optimal ternary synergy, thus highly improving the catalytic activity and durability for multiple alcohol oxide in acid.
