Phase-selective growth of VO2 and V2O5 nanowires was realized via catalyst-free physical vapor deposition from bulk VO2 powder. Single nanowire Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze the distribution of the vanadium oxide phases within the reactor. VO2 (V2O5) nanowires were identified by characteristic peaks at 197, 224, and 620 cm-1 (149, 700, and 994 cm-1). Electron diffraction and polarization-dependent Raman spectra indicated that the growth directions of VO2 and V2O5 nanowires were [100] and [010]. Analysis of Raman spectra in two polarization configurations is sufficient to distinguish between low-index nanowire growth directions for the V2O5 phase. Single nanostructure Raman measurements thus provide a means to rapidly analyze the phase and growth direction of anisotropic nanostructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alternated stacking of dissimilar layers can produce novel superlattice materials with multiple functionalities. The majority of such work reported in literature on epitaxial superlattices has been on alternating layers with the same space group (SG) and crystal structure (CS), whereas superlattices with the same CS but different SG have not been studied as much. We have grown superlattices with two well-known oxide materials, viz. cuprite (CuO, CS = cubic and SG = Pn $$ \bar{3} $$ m) and magnesium oxide (MgO, CS = cubic, SG = Fm $$ \bar{3} $$ m). An MgO buffer layer grown near 650°C at the film-substrate interface was found to be essential to achieving reasonable long-range atomic order. Grazing-angle x-ray diffraction, x-ray reflectivity, and electron diffraction analyses as well as transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the interface abruptness, smoothness, and general crystallinity of the individual layers. Interdiffusion between MgO and CuO near interfacial regions places a limit of 250°C on the growth temperature for fabrication of superlattices with reasonably sharp interfaces. Self-assembled core-shelled hierarchical structures consisting of single-crystalline pyramid Zn microtip as a core, converted ZnO coating as the shell, and the grown ZnO nanowires as branches, have been prepared. Such ZnO hierarchical structures fabricated by a simple aqueous chemical growth method on Zn foil substrate are expected to be easily integrated into nanodevices. These self-organized structures are superior to both the random nanoarchitecture arrays formed in vapor system and the precipitated nanostructures suspended in the solution. Because of the easier transportation of electrons from the metallic core to ZnO branches, the self-assembled core-shelled hierarchical structures exhibit better field-emission characteristics.
