Timely monitoring of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in serum is meaningful for personalized diagnosis and treatment for lung cancer. Cheap and efficient point-of-care testing (POCT) has emerged as a promising method, especially in a low-resource setting. Herein, (i) a 3D pop-up paper-based POCT device was designed and manufactured via a cheap method; it was used for saving time and efficiently building a biosensor; (ii) a novel cobalt boride nanosheet (CoB NS) nanozyme with abundant groups was used for POCT dual-mode signal transduction and then a portable smartphone/pressure meter to readout; (iii) a user-friendly smartphone app was fabricated for achieving more convenient POCT. Detailly, the dual-mode signal generated was based on the CoB NS with peroxidase activity to catalyze a chromogenic agent to develop color and with catalase activity to catalyze decomposition of H 2 O 2 to O 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) and experimental results showed a good catalysis performance of the CoB NS via studying its five possible catalytic pathways, in which the metal Co is the catalytic active site center that acts as the electron donor and promotes electron transfer between the CoB NS and the adsorbed substrates. Benefiting from that, the proposed method showed good analytical ability in detecting ctDNA. Besides, its accuracy was valued by comparing it with the standard qPCR method to detect real samples from tumor cells and tumor-bearing mice, which showed a consistent result and potential practical applicability of the proposed method for POCT ctDNA. In general, this work not only provided a dual-mode POCT platform that could also be applied for other analytes but also first revealed the nanozyme properties of the CoB NS and inspired its new application from electrocatalysis, energy, etc. to biomedicine.

In this study, a hydrothermal process was utilized to grow mixed-valence CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 nanosheets on carbon fiber paper, forming a three-dimensional hierarchical electrode (CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP). The ordered array structure, coupled with the porous bowl-like structure, enhances the exposure of more electrode active sites and facilitates analyte penetration, thus enhancing the electrode sensing performance. As a binder-free sensor, the CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP sensor exhibited remarkable sensitivity in detecting Malachite Green (MG), Sunset Yellow (SY) and Tartrazine (TA) over wide concentration ranges: 0.1-300 μM for MG (R 2  = 0.994), 0.005-200 μM for SY (R 2  = 0.996), and 0.005-300 μM for TA (R 2  = 0.995) with low detection limits of 0.033 μM for MG, 0.0016 μM for SY, and 0.0016 μM for TA (S/N = 3), respectively. Additionally, the 3D CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP sensor detected MG, SY, and TA in a mixed solution with satisfactory results. Biogenic amines containing NH 3 are important indicators for conducting full-scale appraisal of food spoilage and disease diagnosis. However, the currently-used detection methods of NH 3 have several limitations such as time-consuming high cost, and inability to provide visual real-time monitoring. Therefore, researchers have attempted to explore strategies for quantitative real-time monitoring of NH 3 for food spoilage has attracted widespread attentions. Herein, we developed sustainable, fast response, hypersensitized, user-friendly and molecular-level light-emitting biomass-based materials (AFP-FP) containing on-demand nanostructured brain-cells-inspired aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) self-assembles for real-time visual monitoring of seafood spoilage. The 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-isophthalaldehyde-based AIE probe (AFP) was synthesized using a simple "one-step" route. AFP-FP exhibited high selectivity, sensitivity, repeatable and quantitative recognition (y = 7.292×10 3 x + 7.621×10 4 , R = 0.990) of NH 3 with a low detection limit (246 ppb) and fast response (<1 s). The paper highlights how significant characteristics of liver can be modeled in tissue-engineered constructs using unconventional scaffolds. Hepatic lobular organization and metabolic zonation can be mimicked with decellularized plant structures with vasculature resembling a native-hepatic lobule vascular arrangement or silk blend scaffolds meticulously designed for guided cellular arrangement as hepatic patches or metabolic activities. The functionality of hepatocytes can be enhanced and maintained for long periods in naturally fibrous structures paving way for bioartificial liver development. The phase I enzymatic activity in hepatic models can be raised exploiting the microfibrillar structure of paper to allow cellular stacking creating hypoxic conditions to induce in vivo -like xenobiotic metabolism. Lastly, the paper introduces amalgamation of carbon-based nanomaterials into existing scaffolds in liver tissue engineering.

Target-responsive nanomaterials attract growing interest in the application of drug delivery, bioimaging, and sensing due to the responsive releasing of guest molecules by the smart molecule gate. However, it remains a challenge to develop smart nanomaterials with simple assembly and low nonspecific leakage starting from encapsulation strategies, especially in the sensing field. Herein, Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) were first grown on porous carbon derived from ZIF-8 (PCZIF) to be employed as nanocarriers. By employing the Au NCs as linkers and aptamer (Apta) double-strand hybrids (target Apta and SH-complementary DNA) as capping units, we reported the novel target-responsive nanomaterials of Apta/Au NCs-PCZIF/hemin through Au-S binding encapsulation for sensing assays. The Au-S binding encapsulation strategy simplified the packaging procedure and reduced non-target responsive leakage. As a proof, ochratoxin A (OTA) as a model target participates in the double-strand hybrid competitive displacement reaction and triggered Apta conformation switches from a coil to a G-quadruplex structure accompanied by the dissociation of the gatekeeper. Simultaneously, the released hemin can initiate a self-assembly to form G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme. Interestingly, owing to DNAzyme providing electron transfer mediators and peroxidase-like activity, we proposed an electrochemical/colorimetric dual-mode paper-based analytical device (PAD) that provided self-verification to enhance reliability and accuracy, benefiting from independent signal conversion and transmission mechanism. As a consequence, the proposed dual-mode PAD could achieve sensitive electrochemical detection and visual prediction of OTA in the range of 1 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL and 50 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL, respectively. The electrochemical detection limit for OTA was as low as 0.347 pg/mL ( S / N = 3). We believe that this work provides point-of-care testing (POCT) tools for a broad spectrum of applications.

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs), including lateral flow assays (LFAs), dipstick assays and microfluidic PADs (μPADs), have a great impact on the healthcare realm and environmental monitoring. This is especially evident in developing countries because PADs-based point-of-care testing (POCT) enables to rapidly determine various (bio)chemical analytes in a miniaturized, cost-effective and user-friendly manner. Low sensitivity and poor specificity are the main bottlenecks associated with PADs, which limit the entry of PADs into the real-life applications. The application of nanomaterials in PADs is showing great improvement in their detection performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and accuracy since the nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties. In this review, the research progress on the nanomaterial-based PADs is summarized by highlighting representative recent publications. We mainly focus on the detection principles, the sensing mechanisms of how they work and applications in disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food safety management. In addition, the limitations and challenges associated with the development of nanomaterial-based PADs are discussed, and further directions in this research field are proposed.

Cellulose nanopaper (CNP) has been considered as a promising material with great application potential in diverse fields. However, the hydrophilic nature of CNP significantly limits its practical application. In order to improve its water resistance, we demonstrate a facile approach to functionalize CNP by impregnating it with chitosan (CS), followed by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy). The results indicate that the obtained CNP/CS/PPy shows excellent water resistance with the wet tensile strength of up to 80 MPa, which is more than 10 times higher than that of the pure CNP. Intriguingly, new features ( e.g. , electrical conductivity, antibacterial activity, and so forth) are achieved at the same time. The functionalized CNP/CS/PPy shows a high conductivity of 6.5 S cm -1 , which can be used for electromagnetic interference shielding applications with a high shielding performance of around 18 dB. In addition, the CNP/CS/PPy exhibits good antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , with the bacterial reductions of 99.28 and 95.59%, respectively. Thus, this work provides a simple and versatile approach to functionalize CNP for achieving multifunctional properties.

A two-dimensional (2D) Co-MOF nanosheet-based nanozyme was developed for colorimetric detection of disease-related biomolecules. The prepared 2D Co-MOFs exhibited ultrahigh peroxidase catalytic activity. 2D Co-MOFs can catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to the blue product oxTMB, accompanying an obvious change of absorption value at 652 nm. However, alkaline phosphatase can catalyze the hydrolysis of L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate to produce ascorbic acid which can reduce the oxTMB to TMB, resulting in an obvious color fading. Therefore, by recording the change of absorption value at 652 nm, the 2D Co-MOF nanosheets were used to detect ascorbic acid (AA) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The limit of detection for AA and ALP was 0.47 μM and 0.33 U L -1 , respectively. The limit of quantification for AA and ALP was 1.56 μM and 1.1 U L -1 , respectively. The developed nanozyme was successfully used to determine alkaline phosphatase in clinical human serum samples and the results were consistent with those provided by the hospital. Furthermore, by integrating 2D Co-MOF nanosheets with image recognition and data processing function fixed on a smartphone, a portable test of ascorbic acid was reached. In this work, a new chemiluminescence (CL) system of Co-Fe prussian blue analogs nanocubes (Co-Fe PBA NCs) that can catalyze luminol to produce strong CL in the absence of H 2 O 2 was established. Co-Fe PBA NCs have the property of oxidase-like activity, and it can catalyze the generation of active oxygen radicals in a dissolved oxygen system. Since caffeic acid (CA) can remove reactive oxygen species in the system, a sensitive detection method for CA on a paper-based chip was developed. Under the optimal conditions, this method showed a good linear response to CA in the range of 10 - 800 ng mL -1 with a limit of 3 ng mL -1 . The proposed method had been used for the determination of CA in tea samples. The results may open a new avenue for the catalytic property on luminol CL system without extra oxidants.

We report on a simple, cost-effective, instrument-free, and portable distance-based paper device coupled with NFs for the determination of glucose. The analysis reaction is based upon the oxidative etching reaction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the presence of H 2 O 2 that is produced from glucose after a glucose oxidase (GOx) catalytic reaction leading to a morphological transformation of AgNPs. A color band length of AgNPs is coated on to a detection channel and then etched by H 2 O 2 , and these were changed from a purple color to colorless as a correlate of the glucose concentration. To improve the performance of the enzyme immobilization, NFs, which are biocompatible without compromising their structure and biological activity, were then placed onto the sample zone. The naked-eye detection limit was 0.1 mM for 40 min of analysis time. The recoveries of glucose spiked in the artificial urine samples and control urine samples were then verified by our device and were in the acceptable range of 96 - 100%.

Starch and derivatives thereof have proven their usefulness in paper coating processes. Among these derivatives, cationic starch has been widely used in the paper industry as a flocculation, dispersion and ink fixing agent. In another context, nanoscale cellulosic materials have been shown to improve the strength, retention of fillers, the barrier properties of packaging paper products, and printing qualities. This review summarizes the recent studies on the general components used in paper coating, describes the conventional and alternative synthetic processes of cationic starches and nanocellulose, and deals with their current and potential applications in papermaking, focusing primarily on surface treatments. Moreover, environmental applications have been considered to expand the understanding and usefulness of these materials. A paper-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor characterized by the signal amplification of reticular DNA-functionalized PtCu nanoframes (DNA-PtCuTNFs) and analyte-triggered DNA walker was developed for sensitive streptavidin assay. Silver microflower functionalized paper-based sensing platform was prepared to fix the hairpin strand (S1). With addition of the streptavidin, plenty of DNA walkers consisting of the walking strands (S2) labeled with biotin and streptavidin were established, which protected S2 from digestion via the terminal protection mechanism. The sequential introduction of the DNA walker and capture probe initiated the hairpin structure opening of S1 and strand displacement reaction (SDR) happening, causing the S2 release. Subsequently, S1 hybridized with S3. The free S2 further hybridized with adjacent S1 to trigger the next cycle. After multiple cycles, the DNA-PtCuTNFs, the fire-new signal enhancer, with remarkable peroxidase activity, were successfully attached onto the paper electrode via metal-catalyst-free click chemistry. Based on the SDR of the DNA walker and the catalysis of DNA-PtCuTNFs, a significantly boosted ECL signal of luminol was obtained. Under the optimal conditions, the developed sensor for streptavidin assay exhibited a low detection limit of 33.4 fM with a linear range from 0.1 pM to 0.1 μM. Graphical abstract.

Nanolayer and nanolayer by nanolayer deposition of nanofilms of Ag and C using cold plasma in sequences (Ag, Ag-C, Ag-Ag-C), on porous paper, were used to design three disposable stochastic sensors for the assay of amyloid polypeptide from whole blood. The nanofilms were modified with α-cyclodextrin. The test developed using the nanofilm-based disposable stochastic sensors is used for early detection of diabetes. The wider linear concentration range (1.00 × 10 -6 -1.00 ng mL -1 ) and the lower limit of quantification (1.00 × 10 -6 ng mL -1 ) were obtained using the disposable stochastic sensors based on Ag-C and Ag-Ag-C, while the highest sensitivity (3.19 × 10 4  s -1 /μg mL -1 ) was recorded using the disposable stochastic sensor based on Ag-Ag-C. The screening methods were fully validated using whole blood samples from confirmed patients, when the recovery of the islet amyloid polypeptide was higher than 98.00%. Graphical abstract.

Advances in cutting-edge technologies including nanotechnology, microfluidics, electronic engineering, and material science have boosted a new era in the design of robust and sensitive biosensors. In recent years, carbon black has been re-discovered in the design of electrochemical (bio)sensors thanks to its interesting electroanalytical properties, absence of treatment requirement, cost-effectiveness (c.a. 1 €/Kg), and easiness in the preparation of stable dispersions. In this paper, nanochitin was used as an alternative natural nanomaterial to combine with cellulose fibers for fabricating high-strength paper. Two typical chitin nanowhiskers having contrasting sign of surface charge were compared to evaluate the enhancement performance on paper in details. The results show that nanochitin with positive charges on the surface has a significant effect on the strength properties of the prepared paper, especially on wet strength. When the dosage of chitin nanowhiskers was 2%, the wet strength index was increased to 2.48 N·m/g, which is important for paper-based analytical devices with the common use in liquid analysis. Nacre-mimetic materials possess excellent thermostability and barrier performance which provide novel idea for high efficient flame retardant strategy. In this study, we propose an eco-friendly approach to fabricate fire-resistant cellulosic Chinese Xuan paper by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly chitosan (CH) and montmorillonite (MMT). The flame retardancy of Xuan paper was greatly improved after the LBL assembly coated CH/MMT, it achieved excellent flame retardancy when the CH/MMT bilayer was over 10 BL with the LOI value higher than of 35 %. The results of thermal stability of treated Xuan paper revealed the nacre-mimetic CH/MMT nanocoating on Xuan paper would promote the formation of compact and dense char which will be beneficial to inhibit the heat transmission and combustible gas diffusion. The ink wetting performance was also investigated in this study. The Used Disposal Paper Cups (UDPCs) have become a concern to the solid waste management sector as scientists triggered the problems in recent years, to proceed forward in developing the process for this issue. Based on this concern, the present study emphasizes on the isolation of a novel bio-eco based Cellulose NanoCrystals (CNCs) from UDPCs through citric acid hydrolysis. The effect of acid concentration on microstructure and yield of CNCs are highlighted. The optimized yield (55 wt.%) has an appearance of rod-like structure with a width of 13.7 ± 0.6 nm which results due to 76 wt.% of acid hydrolyzed CNCs. The colloidal stability, crystallinity index, presence of functional groups and elemental composition in CNCs (76 wt.%) were identified by employing zeta potential, XRD, conductometric test and FTIR techniques. The customization of disease treatment focused on genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors of individual patients, including tailored medical decisions and treatments, is identified as precision medicine. This approach involves the combination of various aspects such as the collection and processing of a large amount of data, the selection of optimized and personalized drug dosage for each patient and the development of selective and reliable analytical tools for the monitoring of clinical, genetic and environmental parameters. In this context, miniaturized, compact and ultrasensitive bioanalytical devices play a crucial role for achieving the goals of personalized medicine. In this review, the latest analytical technologies suitable for providing portable and easy-to-use diagnostic tools in clinical settings will be discussed, highlighting new opportunities arising from nanotechnologies, offering peculiar perspectives and opportunities for precision medicine.

Nanocelluloses (NC) increase mechanical and barrier paper properties allowing the use of paper in applications actually covered by other materials. Despite the exponential increase of information, NC have not been fully implemented in papermaking yet, due to the challenges of using NC. This paper provides a review of the main new findings and emerging possibilities in this field by focusing mainly on: (i) Decoupling the effects of NC on wet-end and paper properties by using synergies with retention aids, chemical modification, or filler preflocculation; (ii) challenges and solutions related to the incorporation of NC in the pulp suspension and its effects on barrier properties; and (iii) characterization needs of NC at an industrial scale. The paper also includes the market perspectives. It is concluded that to solve these challenges specific solutions are required for each paper product and process, being the wet-end optimization the key to decouple NC effects on drainage and paper properties. Furthermore, the effect of NC on recyclability must also be taken into account to reach a compromise solution. The interaction of plasmonic nanoparticles with a dielectric platform gives rise to unique optical behaviors and this can be maneuvered to improve the plasmonic/SERS performances of a substrate. Herein, dielectric modified plasmonic-paper SERS substrate is developed by assembling Ag@SiO 2 nanocubes on Fe-TiO 2 nanosheets (NS) modified paper. The Fe-TiO 2 NS being visible light responsive significantly alters the optical property of the paper and serves as a dielectric underlay for the Ag nanocubes. Hence, the incident light reflected back from the dielectric nanosheets couples with the scattered light from the Ag nanocubes leading to spatially enhanced electromagnetic field improving the SERS enhancement. The prepared dielectric modified plasmonic-paper has an average enhancement factor (EF) of 1.49 × 10 7 using R6G as a probe molecule. This value is superior to unmodified plasmonic-paper highlighting the coupling effect of the dielectric nanosheets. The substrate shows robust detection performance for thiabendazole and achieves a limit of detection (LOD) of 19 μg/L, which is 4-fold more sensitive than unmodified plasmonic paper. Direct swabbing test of thiabendazole sprayed apple fruit shows a discernible Raman signal down to 15 ppb indicating the utility of the substrate for point-of-need applications in food safety., (Copyright © 2019. Herein, we introduce a nanopaper-based analytical device (NAD) or "lab-on-nanopaper" device for visual sensing of human serum albumin (HSA) in human blood serums, which relies on embedding of curcumin within transparent bacterial cellulose (BC) nanopaper. BC nanopaper is an appropriate candidate to be an excellent platform for the development of optical (bio)sensors due to having exceptional properties such as optical transparency, high flexibility, porosity, biodegradability, and printability. The hydrophilic test zones were created on the fabricated bioplatform through creating the hydrophobic walls via laser printing technology. The color changes of curcumin embedded in BC nanopaper (CEBC) due to the inhibitory effect of HSA on the curcumin degradation in alkaline solutions, which can be monitored visually (naked eye/Smartphone camera) or spectroscopically using a spectrophotometer, were linearly proportional to the HSA concentration in the range of 10-300 μM and 25-400 μM, respectively. The developed NAD/CEBC as a novel albumin assay kit was successfully utilized to the determination of HSA in human blood serum samples with satisfactory results. Building upon the fascinating features of BC nanopaper as a very promising bioplatform in optical (bio)sensing applications we are confident "lab-on-nanopaper" devices/NADs, which take the advantages of the nanopaper and also meet the ASSURED criteria, could be considered as a new generation of optical (bio)sensing platforms that are currently based on paper, glass or plastic substrates., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Citrate is currently considered a preferred biomarker for the early stage detection of prostate cancer. In the present work, based on the highly efficient catalytic properties of gold nanoclusters, a novel system for optical determination of citrate was successfully established under optimized conditions. Cysteine-capped gold nanoclusters (Cys-AuNCs) are shown to have an intrinsic peroxidase-mimetic activity. In the presence of H 2 O 2, Cys-AuNCs nanostructures are able to catalyse the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with high efficiency to produce a blue dye (with an absorbance maximum at 650 nm). Citrate has carboxylic and hydroxyl groups that can bind with free amino and free carboxyl cysteine groups via hydrogen bonds, thus creating a coating on the surface of the gold nanocluster and inhibiting the cluster oxidation activity. Accordingly, a visual, sensitive and simple colorimetric method using Cys-AuNCs as peroxidase mimetic was developed for detecting citrate. A suitable linear relationship for citrate was obtained for the range of 0.5 to 1000 μM. The limit of detection (LOD) of the proposed method was calculated as 0.1 μM and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was obtained to be less than 4.0%. Moreover, the biosensor was used to perform a paper assay on a Y-shaped microfluidic device and make use of the distinctive features of microchannels such as short response time, very low reagent volume required, low fabrication cost etc. A detection limit of 0.4 μM was achieved through the paper test and a good linear range was observed between 1.0 μM-10 mM. A green and facile method is presented for in situ synthesis of a novel photoluminescence-quenching nanopaper with a highly-efficient quenching ability, rapid reaction time and long-term storage. The as-prepared nanopaper is further used to construct an aptasensor platform with high performance, rapidness and robustness.

A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was simply constructed for highly sensitive detection of L-glutamic acid and L-cysteine. The μPAD featured with two functional zones on one strip of paper achieved by preferable multi-plate ZnO nanoflowers (ZnO NFs) and molecularly imprinting polymer (MIP) membranes. The as-designed μPAD was established based on the inherent relation between the photo-oxidation products and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance with the highly sensitive detection of biomolecules. The ZnO NFs were utilized to produce photo-oxidation products by driving the reaction between ferrocenemethanol and photogenerated holes under ultraviolet light. The photo-oxidation products easily flowed to MIP membranes along the hydrophilic channel via capillary action. MIP membranes as the receptors specifically recognized the analytes as well as decreased the electron loss by blocking the reduction reaction between electrons and photo-oxidation products. The PEC response was obtained in the processes of electrons transfer and exhibited the direct relationships corresponding to the concentrations of target analytes. The μPAD showed the detection limits toward L-glutamic acid and L-cysteine as low as 9.6 pM and 24 pM, respectively. Moreover, it is interesting to point out that ZnO NFs nanostructure shows superior PEC signal compared with those of ZnO nanospheres, nanosheets, and nanorod arrays. We report a paper-based aptasensor platform that uses two reaction zones and a connecting bridge along with printed multifunctional bio/nano materials to achieve molecular recognition and signal amplification. Upon addition of analyte to the first zone, a fluorescently labelled DNA or RNA aptamer is desorbed from printed graphene oxide, rapidly producing an initial fluorescence signal. The released aptamer then flows to the second zone where it reacts with printed reagents to initiate rolling circle amplification, generating DNA amplicons containing a peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme, which produces a colorimetric readout that can be read in an equipment-free manner or with a smartphone. The sensor was demonstrated using an RNA aptamer for adenosine triphosphate (a bacterial marker) and a DNA aptamer for glutamate dehydrogenase (Clostridium difficile marker) with excellent sensitivity and specificity. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) freestanding reduced graphene oxide-supported Cu 2 O composites (Cu 2 O-rGO) were synthesized via simple and cost-efficient hydrothermal and filtration strategies. The structural characterizations clearly showed that highly porous 3D graphene aerogel-supported Cu 2 O microcrystals (3D Cu 2 O-GA) have been successfully synthesized, and the Cu 2 O microcrystals are uniformly assembled in the 3D GA. Meanwhile, paper-like 2D reduced graphene oxide-supported Cu 2 O nanocrystals (2D Cu 2 O-rGO-P) have also been prepared by a filtration process. It was found that the products prepared from different precursors and methods exhibited different sensing performances for H 2 O 2 detection. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the 3D Cu 2 O-GA has high electrocatalytic activity for the H 2 O 2 reduction and excellent sensing performance for the electrochemical detection of H 2 O 2 with a detection limit of 0.37 μM and a linear detection range from 1.0 μM to 1.47 mM. Meanwhile, the 2D Cu 2 O-rGO-P structure also showed good electrochemical sensing performance toward H 2 O 2 detection with a much wider linear response over the concentration range from 5.0 μM to 10.56 mM. Compared to the previously reported sensing materials, the as-obtained 2D and 3D Cu 2 O-rGO materials exhibited higher electrochemical sensing properties toward the detection of H 2 O 2 with high sensitivity and selectivity. The 2D and 3D Cu 2 O-rGO composites also exhibited high sensing performance for the real-time detection of H 2 O 2 in human serum. The present study indicates that 2D and 3D graphene-Cu 2 O composites have promising applications in the fabrication of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensing devices.

In this article, red-emitting copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) were prepared in the matrix of bovine serum albumin (BSA) through using N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O as a reducing agent and BSA as a stabilizer. In the aqueous suspension of BSA-Cu NCs, the addition of rutin enabled the combination of rutin with BSA around Cu NCs via hydrogen bond and electrostatic interactions between functional groups of BSA and rutin. The approaching of rutin to Cu NCs induced that the fluorescence (FL) of Cu NCs was quenched by rutin due to the electron transfer from Cu NCs to rutin. Under the optimal conditions, the FL of Cu NCs was linearly decreased with the increase of rutin concentration from 0.1 to100 μM, together with a low detection limit of ca. 0.02μM. The FL quenching responses of Cu NCs were highly selective and sensitive towards rutin, over potential interferents in real human serum samples. Based on BSA-Cu NCs, this as-proposed FL probe exhibited a superior capability of rutin detection in real human serum samples. There has been growing interest in the development of paper-based biosensors because their simplicity and low cost are attractive for point-of-care diagnosis, especially in low-resource areas. However, only a limited range of paper materials - primarily chromatography papers - have been incorporated into diagnostics thus far. Here, we investigate the performance of different types of paper in order to develop an aptamer- and MoS 2 nanosheet-based sensor relying on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to signal the presence of a target protein. An aptamer which binds to a malarial biomarker, Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH), is chosen for this study, as point-of-care diagnostics would be especially advantageous in low-resource areas, such as those where malaria is prevalent. We observe that of all papers tested, a measurable and specific fluorescence recovery can only be produced on the sensor created with printer paper, while no significant fluorescence recovery is generated on sensors made from other types of paper, including chromatography, lens, and filter papers. Therefore, our findings demonstrate the importance of careful material selection for the development of a paper-based diagnostic test, and suggest that commercially-available products such as printer paper may serve as viable materials to develop cost-effective and simple diagnostics.

A paper/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid CD-like microfluidic SpinChip integrated with DNA probe-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) nanosensors was developed for multiplex quantitative LAMP detection (mqLAMP). This approach can simply and effectively address a major challenging problem of multiplexing in current LAMP methods.

The main goal of this work was to reinforce softwood pulp (SP) with bacterial cellulose (BC) to generate a sustainable biocomposite. BC is a nanocellulose, which was anticipated to increase interfacial adhesion between the cellulosic fibers and BC. The organism used was Gluconacetobacter xylinus, which was incubated in a static Hestrin-Schramm culture at 28°C for 14days. The specimens of BC, SP and the reinforced SP with BC were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR, FESEM, and physico-mechanical testing. The crystallinity index was found to be 83 and 54% for BC and SP, respectively. FT-IR spectra showed that the composition of BC was fully different from that of SP fibers. Based on FESEM images, one can conclude that BC and softwood fibers do form a good combination with a nonporous structure. BC fibers fill in among the softwood fibers in the sheet. The physical and mechanical properties showed that as the dosage of BC increased, the properties of tensile index, tear index, and burst index greatly improved, while the porosity and the elongation decreased. The reason for the improved mechanical properties can be attributed to the increase of interfibrillar bonding which reduced porosity. This would be due to the high aspect ratio of BC that is capable of connecting between the cellulosic fibers and BC nanofibers, enhancing a large contact surface and therefore producing excellent coherence. Paper sheets made from bagasse pulp have been modified using nanocellulose (NC) obtained from the same raw material. Modification of paper sheets have been carried out either through loading of paper with different concentrations of NC and antibacterial agent, Chitosan (Ch) during making sheets, or by surface coating of the paper. Crystals of NC extracted using concentrated sulfuric acid from bagasse pulp were found to have crystallinity index (CrI) 90%. Morphology of obtained NC has been confirmed by TEM and images revealed formation of NC crystals with large size distribution ranges from 4 to 60nm. Mechanical properties and air permeability of paper sheets loaded with different ratios of NC and Ch have been investigated. The results showed that presence of NC did not negatively affect the obtained modified paper sheets, while air permeability decreased with adding 8% NC to paper matrix. On the other hand, surface coverage of paper sheets with NC greatly reduced air permeability. Antimicrobial investigations carried out by optical density method indicated that presence of Ch in the paper sheets as an additive or in a coating formulation enhanced paper resistance to different microorganisms especially those causing food poisoning. Lignin is the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose. It has long been obtained as a by-product of cellulose production in pulp and paper production, but had rather low added-value applications. A changing paper market and the emergence of biorefinery projects should generate vast amounts of lignin with the potential of value addition. Nanomaterials offer unique properties and the preparation of lignin nanoparticles and other nanostructures has therefore gained interest as a promising technique to obtain value-added lignin products. Due to lignin's high structural and chemical heterogeneity, methods must be adapted to these different types. This review focuses on the ability of different formation methods to cope with the huge variety of lignin types and points out which particle characteristics can be achieved by which method. The current research's main focus is on pH and solvent-shifting methods where the latter can yield solid and hollow particles. Solvent shifting also showed the capability to cope with different lignin types and solvents and antisolvents, respectively. Point-of-care and in-field technologies for rapid, sensitive and selective detection of molecular biomarkers have attracted much interest. Rugged bioassay technology capable of fast detection of markers for pathogens and genetic diseases would in particular impact the quality of health care in the developing world, but would also make possible more extensive screening in developed countries to tackle problems such as those associated with water and food quality, and tracking of infectious organisms in hospitals and clinics. Literature trends indicate an increasing interest in the use of nanomaterials, and in particular luminescent nanoparticles, for assay development. These materials may offer attributes for development of assays and sensors that could achieve improvements in analytical figures of merit, and provide practical advantages in sensitivity and stability. There is opportunity for cost-efficiency and technical simplicity by implementation of luminescent nanomaterials as the basis for transduction technology, when combined with the use of paper substrates, and the ubiquitous availability of cell phone cameras and associated infrastructure for optical detection and transmission of results. Luminescent nanoparticles have been described for a broad range of bioanalytical targets including small molecules, oligonucleotides, peptides, proteins, saccharides and whole cells (e.g., cancer diagnostics). The luminescent nanomaterials that are described herein for paper-based bioassays include metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. These nanomaterials often have broad and strong absorption and narrow emission bands that improve opportunity for multiplexed analysis, and can be designed to provide emission at wavelengths that are efficiently processed by conventional digital cameras. Luminescent nanoparticles can be embedded in paper substrates that are designed to direct fluid flow, and the resulting combination of technologies can offer competitive analytical performance at relatively low cost.

Patterned paper has characteristics that lead to miniaturized assays that run by capillary action with small volumes of fluids. These methods suggest a path for the development of simple, inexpensive, and portable diagnostic assays that can be useful in remote settings, where simple immunoassays are becoming increasingly important for detecting disease and monitoring health. Incorporation of nanomaterials plays a major role in sensing probe immobilization and detection sensitivity of paper-based devices. Nanomaterial properties, such as increased surface area, have aided with signal amplification and lower detection limits. This review focuses on application of nanomaterials as signal amplification elements on origami paper-based electro-analytical devices for immune biomarkers detection with a brief introduction about various fabrication techniques and designs, biological and detection methods. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the selected latest research articles from 2013 to May 2015 on application of nanomaterials in various types of origami paper based electrochemical and photoelectrochemical immunosensors. The review breaks into two parts. The first part devotes to the development and applications of nanomaterials in electrochemical immunesensing. In this paper, we present a facile and cost-effective method to obtain superhydrophobic filter paper and demonstrate its application for efficient water/oil separation. By coupling structurally distinct organosilane precursors (e.g., octadecyltrichlorosilane and methyltrichlorosilane) to paper fibers under controlled reaction conditions, we have formulated a simple, inexpensive, and efficient protocol to achieve a desirable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface on conventional filter paper. The silanized superhydrophobic filter paper showed nanostructured morphology and demonstrated great separation efficiency (up to 99.4%) for water/oil mixtures. The modified filter paper is stable in both aqueous solutions and organic solvents, and can be reused multiple times. The present study shows that our newly developed binary silanization is a promising method of modifying cellulose-based materials for practical applications, in particular the treatment of industrial waste water and ecosystem recovery.

In this work, bovine serum albumin (BSA)-Au nanoclusters were used to coat a paper-based microfluidic device. This device acted as a Cu(2+) biosensor that showed fluorescence quenching on detection of copper ions. The detection limit of this sensor could be adjusted by altering the water absorbing capacity of the device. Qualitative and semi-quantitative results could be obtained visually without the aid of any advanced instruments. This sensor could test Cu(2+) rapidly with high specificity and sensitivity, which would be useful for point-of-care testing (POCT).

Graphene has shown great potential for use in biosensors because of its versatile surface modification, good water dispersibility, and extraordinary electrical conductivity. Here, a novel enzyme-free and all-graphene electrochemical immunosensor, based on two novel graphene nanocomposites, for the ultrasensitive immunosensing of α-fetoprotein (AFP) was reported. Noncovalent ultrathin gold nanowire functionalized graphene sheets (GNWs/GO) with the extraordinary biological and electrical properties, which exhibited high water solubility and further biological molecule functionalization, was prepared in situ solution phase to be used as an enhanced electrochemical sensing platform. In addition, a new electrocatalyst, CuS nanoparticle-decorated graphene (CuS/GO) composites was successfully prepared by a simple method for in situ growth of CuS on the surface of graphene sheets. Covalent binding of the detection antibody of AFP on the CuS/GO composites produced a sensitive electrochemical bioprobe for detection of AFP by sandwich immunosensing. The corresponding immunosensor, employing an inexpensive and portable 3D paper-based analytical device, possessed a wide calibration range of 0.001-10 ng mL(-1) and a low detection limit of 0.5 pg mL(-1) (S/N=3), which was successfully applied to the detection of AFP in serum samples from both healthy people and cancer patients. A mediator-less and compartment-less glucose/O2 enzymatic biofuel cell (BFC) was introduced into microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μ-PADs) that relies on flow in hollow channels with silver nanoparticles/graphene modified paper electrode as the anodic and cathodic substrate, to implement self-powered sensitive carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection. Glucose dehydrogenase (GDH)-gold nanoparticles bioconjugate modified with CEA acted as a biocatalyst for enhancing glucose oxidation in the bioanode, as well as the transducing enzyme for signaling magnification. Similarly, nanoporous PtNi/bilirubin oxidase (BOD) acted as a biocatalyst for enhancing O2 reduction in the biocathode. With an increase in the concentration of CEA, the amount of CEA-Au-GDH bioconjugate on bioanode decreases, thus leading to the lower output of the as-prepared BFC. This proposed BFC-based self-powered immunosensor for CEA possessed largely increased linear detection range from 1 pg mL(-1) to 0.5 μg mL(-)(1) with a detection limit of 0.7 pg mL(-)(1). Self-powered human-interactive but invisible electronics have many applications in anti-theft and anti-fake systems for human society. In this work, for the first time, we demonstrate a transparent paper-based, self-powered, and human-interactive flexible system. The system is based on an electrostatic induction mechanism with no extra power system appended. The self-powered, transparent paper device can be used for a transparent paper-based art anti-theft system in museums or for a smart mapping anti-fake system in precious packaging and documents, by virtue of the advantages of adding/removing freely, having no impairment on the appearance of the protected objects, and being easily mass manufactured. This initial study bridges the transparent nanopaper with a self-powered and human-interactive electronic system, paving the way for the development of smart transparent paper electronics.

Transparency has never been integrated into freestanding flexible graphene paper (FF-GP), although FF-GP has been discussed extensively, because a thin transparent graphene sheet will fracture easily when the template or substrate is removed using traditional methods. Here, transparent FF-GP (FFT-GP) was developed using NaCl as the template and was applied in transparent and stretchable supercapacitors. The capacitance was improved by nearly 1000-fold compared with that of the laminated or wrinkled chemical vapor deposition graphene-film-based supercapacitors.

The study reports on the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from wastepaper, as an environmental friendly approach of source material, which can be a high availability and low-cost precursor for cellulose nanomaterial processing. Alkali and bleaching treatments were employed for the extraction of cellulose particles followed by controlled-conditions of acid hydrolysis for the isolation of CNCs. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR FTIR) spectroscopy was used to analyze the cellulose particles extracted while Transmission electron microscopy images confirmed the presence of CNCs. The diameters of CNCs are in the range of 3-10nm with a length of 100-300nm while a crystallinity index of 75.9% was determined from X-ray diffraction analysis. Flexible biosensors are of considerable current interest for the development of portable point-of-care medical products, minimally invasive implantable devices, and compact diagnostic platforms. Here, we reported an electrochemical paper based analytical device fabricated (EPADs) by sequentially growing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and manganese oxide (MnO2) nanowires networks on a freestanding three dimensional (3D) origami device. This fabricated through the growth of an AuNPs layer on the surfaces of cellulose fibers in the screen-printed paper working electrode (PWE), and thus developed a gold paper working electrode (Au-PWE). Subsequently, MnO2 nanowires were successfully electrodeposited on Au-PWE to form a 3D network with large surface areas. Based on this novel EPADs and the principle of origami, we presented herein a simple immunosensing scheme using glucose oxidase (GOx) as an enzyme label, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a redox terminator, and glucose as an enzyme substrate. The electrochemical enzymatic redox cycling was applied to the detection of prostate protein antigen (PSA), a biomarker of prostatic cancer. The proposed method successfully fulfilled the highly sensitive detection of PSA with a linear range of 0.005 ng mL(-1)-100 ng mL(-1) with a detection limit of 0.0012 ng mL(-1). In this work, we report transistors made of van der Waals materials on a mesoporous paper with a smooth nanoscale surface. The aqueous transistor has a novel planar structure with source, drain, and gate electrodes on the same surface of the paper, while the mesoporous paper is used as an electrolyte reservoir. These transistors are enabled by an all-cellulose paper with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) on the top surface that leads to an excellent surface smoothness, while the rest of the microsized cellulose fibers can absorb electrolyte effectively. Based on two-dimensional van der Waals materials, including MoS2 and graphene, we demonstrate high-performance transistors with a large on-off ratio and low subthreshold swing. Such planar transistors with absorbed electrolyte gating can be used as sensors integrated with other components to form paper microfluidic systems. This study is significant for future paper-based electronics and biosensors.

Would it not be nice to have an organic solvent nanofiltration membrane made from renewable resources that can be manufactured as simply as producing paper? Here the production of nanofiltration membranes made from nanocellulose by applying a papermaking process is demonstrated. Manufacture of the nanopapers was enabled by inducing flocculation of nanofibrils upon addition of trivalent ions.

Specific interactions of extracellular matrix proteins with cells and their adhesion to the substrate are important for cell growth. A nanopatterned latex-coated paper substrate previously shown to be an excellent substrate for cell adhesion and 2D growth was studied for directed immobilization of proteins. The nanostructured latex surface was formed by short-wavelength IR irradiation of a two-component latex coating consisting of a hydrophilic film-forming styrene butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer and hydrophobic polystyrene particles. The hydrophobic regions of the IR-treated latex coating showed strong adhesion of bovine serum albumin (cell repelling protein), fibronectin (cell adhesive protein) and streptavidin. Opposite to the IR-treated surface, fibronectin and streptavidin had a poor affinity toward the untreated pristine latex coating. Detailed characterization of the physicochemical surface properties of the latex-coated substrates revealed that the observed differences in protein affinity were mainly due to the presence or absence of the protein repelling polar and charged surface groups. We have successfully developed hybrid piezoelectric paper through fiber functionalization that involves anchoring nanostructured BaTiO3 into a stable matrix with wood cellulose fibers prior to the process of making paper sheets. This is realized by alternating immersion of wood fibers in a solution of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) PDDA (+), followed by poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) PSS (-), and once again in PDDA (+), resulting in the creation of a positively charged surface on the wood fibers. The treated wood fibers are then immersed in a BaTiO3 suspension, resulting in the attachment of BaTiO3 nanoparticles to the wood fibers due to a strong electrostatic interaction. Zeta potential measurements, X-ray diffraction, and microscopic and spectroscopic analysis imply successful functionalization of wood fibers with BaTiO3 nanoparticles without altering the hydrogen bonding and crystal structure of the wood fibers. The paper has the largest piezoelectric coefficient, d33 = 4.8 ± 0.4 pC N(-1), at the highest nanoparticle loading of 48 wt % BaTiO3. This newly developed piezoelectric hybrid paper is promising as a low-cost substrate to build sensing devices.

Highly stretchable graphene-nanocellulose composite nanopaper is fabricated for strain-sensor applications. As an electronic alternative for printed media, the E-paper has ultralow power consumption, reduced eyestrain, high contrast ratio. Electrophoretic displays are one of the most promising E-paper technologies, which are now widely used in consumer products. The properties of the electrophoretic display are mainly determined by the composition, size, light scattering properties, and density of the electrophoretic nanoparticles. First, we introduce the preparation of white and black electrophoretic nanoparticles, because the monochrome E-paper has achieved commercial success. Then the structure and properties of color electrophoretic nanoparticles for color E-paper products are discussed. In addition, the enhanced and novel electrophoretic nanoparticles are now propelling the development of next-generation E-paper with new applications. Finally, the active area of the preparation of electrophoretic nanoparticles is highlighted in terms of the development of future E-paper.

This study reports a facile method for the synthesis of multi-enzyme co-embedded organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers, using glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as the organic components, and Cu3(PO4)2 · 3H2O as the inorganic component. The synthesized nanoflowers enable the combination of a two-enzyme cascade reaction in one step, in which the GOx component of the nanoflowers oxidizes glucose to generate H2O2, which then reacts with the adjacent HRP component on the nanoflowers to oxidize the chromogenic substrates, resulting in an apparent color change. Given the close proximity of the two enzyme components in a single nanoflower, this novel sensor greatly reduces the diffusion and decomposition of H2O2, and greatly enhances the sensitivity of glucose detection. Thus, the obtained multi-enzyme co-embedded organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers can be unquestionably used as highly sensitive colorimetric sensors for the detection of glucose. Notably, this work presents a very facile route for the synthesis of multi-enzyme co-embedded nanomaterials for the simultaneous catalysis of multi-step cascade enzymatic reactions. Furthermore, it has great potential for application in biotechnology, and biomedical and environmental chemistry.

Nature uses a variety of strategies to tune wetting behavior for biological applications. By artificially mimicking these strategies, a variety of different wetting conditions can be achieved. Numerous examples exist of designed surfaces that can mimic the wetting behavior of lotus leaves or rose petals, but few surfaces that may reversibly transition between the two have been reported. In this paper, a combination of topological control over conductive, carbon-based nanomaterials and low surface energy coating was used to tune the wetting properties between "lotus" and "rose." The topological control was imparted by a hierarchical "nanohybrid shish kebab" structure, which uses solution-grown polymer single crystals on carbon nanotubes to tune the surface roughness of the latter. The low surface energy polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating was deposited by the initiated chemical vapor deposition technique. Application of electric potential on these unique nanostructures allows the surfaces to reversibly transition between "lotus" and "rose" behavior. A further irreversible transition between "rose" and the fully wetted Wenzel wetting state was also predicted and shown. These materials show remarkable promise for lab-on-a-chip devices and surface passivation for biological studies.
