Autophagy could play suppressing role in cancer therapy by facilitating release of tumor antigens from dying cells and inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD). Therefore, discovery and rational design of more effective inducers of cytotoxic autophagy is expected to develop new strategies for finding innovative drugs for precise and successful cancer treatment. Herein, we develop MoO 3-x nanowires (MoO 3-x NWs) with high oxygen vacancy and strong photothermal responsivity to ablate tumors through hyperthermia, thus promote the induction of cytotoxic autophagy and severe ICD. As expected, the combination of MoO 3-x NWs and photothermal therapy (PTT) effectively induces autophagy to promote the release of tumor antigens from the ablated cells, and induces the maturation and antigen presentation of dendritic cells (DCs), subsequently activates cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs)-mediated adaptive immunity. Furthermore, the combination treatment of MoO 3-x NWs with immune checkpoint blockade of PD-1 could promote the tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) polarization into tumor-killing M1 macrophages, inhibit infiltration of Treg cells at tumor sites, and alleviate immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment, finally intensify the anti-tumor activity in vivo. Adhesives are applied extensively in daily life and industries, and people have developed numerous commercial polymeric adhesives. However, in most cases, these adhesives work on dry surfaces in air and form permanent bonds with the substrates, limiting the applications of adhesives. Inspired by the innate adhesive functions of some animals, such as geckos, spiders, mussels, and clingfish, scientists have developed various adhesive compositions and structures to meet various conditions. Here, we show a versatile subnanometer nanowire (SNW) adhesive with high strength and great reversibility, which could be prepared at a large scale through a facile room-temperature reaction. The SNW adhesive contacts the substrates at multiple sites due to the ultrahigh flexibility, and meanwhile, the multilevel interactions among the SNWs endow them with strong cohesion, so they exhibit good adhesive performance. This adhesive is applicable to various substrates, such as metals, polymers, and glass, and not only possesses good stability at room temperature in air but also is suitable for underwater environments and ultralow temperatures. Moreover, this adhesive could be easily recycled and removed from the substrates without any residue and damage. The SNW adhesive not only inspires the design of hierarchical adhesive structures with new contact modes but also has potential for practical applications.

The cluster-nuclei coassembled strategy provides an impressive way to obtain 1D subnanometer heteronanostructures, including subnanometer nanowires and subnanometer nanobelts. These nanomaterials have diameters and thicknesses close to the size of a unit cell and exhibit excellent performance originating from multicomponent synergy. This Mini Review summarizes the recent progress of these novel functional nanomaterials, including their properties and applications in catalysis, energy conversion, and other fields. On the basis of previous studies, the development direction of cluster-nuclei coassembled 1D subnanometer materials is pointed out.

Preparing Pt-based one-dimensional (1D) ultrafine nanowires with abundant structural defects/grain boundaries and exploring their novel applications have attracted great interest in real-world applications. Here we introduce an environmentally friendly, facile aqueous solution approach to directly prepare a series of sub-3.0 nm PtRu ultrafine wavy nanowires. Characterizations show that the PtRu nanowires are alloy polycrystalline structures with abundant structural defects/grain boundaries. We first introduce the as-synthesized PtRu nanowires into electrochemical biosensors for the detection of DA and find that the Pt 7 Ru 3 nanowires exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity to DA with fast response, ultralow limit of detection, and excellent selectivity at a potential of 0.3 V in 0.1 M phosphate buffered solution (pH 7.2). This study shows an effective approach to the development of ultrafine PtRu nanowires as electrocatalysts for electrochemical nonenzymatic dopamine biosensors.

A charged heterogeneous nanowire membrane with asymmetric wettability serves as a biomimetic passive channel when the bilayer is hydrophilic; It also functions as pH valve based on the hydrophobic CaWO4 layer (contact angle of 145.3˚±0.3˚) and hydrophilic MnO2 layer. Moreover, a reversible ionic rectification is realized in the above-mentioned semi-hydrophobic and hydrophilic state with strong acid environment or in the complete hydrophobic stage with a moderate discrepancy (CA of CaWO4 and MnO2 layer are 141.3˚±0.3˚ and 157.6˚±2.0˚, respectively) in near neuter condition., (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A 3D macro-assembly with α-MnO(2) nanowires as flexible building blocks was obtained by a simple hydrothermal method. The sample with an interconnected open porous structure shows excellent mechanical strength, selective adsorption of cationic dyes and some certain types of toxic heavy metal ions.

Palladium is a key catalyst invaluable to many industrial processes and fine-chemical synthesis. Although recent progress has allowed the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles with various shapes by using different techniques, the facile synthesis of Pd nanocrystals and turning them into a highly active, selective, and stable catalyst systems still remain challenging. Herein, we report the highly selective one-pot synthesis of monodisperse Pd cluster nanowires in aqueous solution; these consist of interconnected nanoparticles and may serve as highly active catalysts because of the enrichment of high index facets on the surface, including {443}, {331}, and {221} steps. For the first time, carbon nanotube and γ-Al(2)O(3) immobilized Pd cluster nanowires showed highly enhanced catalytic performance in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde and gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3butadiene relative to immobilized Pd icosahedra and nanocubes, as well as commercial Pd catalysts., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A family of layered lanthanide (Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd) hydroxide nanowires (NWs) has been synthesized via a hydrothermal route. These NWs are ∼8 nm in diameter and a few micrometres in length. The obtained Eu- and Gd-based layered hydroxide NWs consist of layered structure with two interlayer spacings. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and time on the transition of the layered structure were investigated. Photoluminescence of the Eu-based layered hydroxide NWs was also studied. These layered lanthanide hydroxide NWs combine the advantages of lanthanide and layered hydroxides, which will expand the inorganic layered materials and can be expected to be used as building blocks for further fabrication of functional nanostructures.

Textile‐based flexible alternating current electroluminescent devices have attracted extensive research interest due to their great potential in the fields of illumination and display, information interaction, smart wear, visual sensing, and trendy decoration. However, the challenge remains to easily and efficiently fabricate electroluminescent devices with high brightness and excellent durability. In this study, a fully sprayed method for fabricating electroluminescent devices on fabric is proposed. Based on the top‐emitting structure, light‐emitting e‐textiles with bright light emission are successfully prepared using highly conductive eutectic gallium–indium alloy and silver nanowires as the bottom and top electrodes, respectively, and high dielectric constant composites as the dielectric layer. Here, the brightness enhancement mechanism of high dielectric constant dielectric layers is explained for alternating current electroluminescence devices with top‐emitting structure. The devices have a brightness of up to 338.6 cd m−2 and are resistant to all forms of physical damage. Inorganic nanowires-based organogel, a class of emerging organogel with convenient preparation, recyclability, and excellent mechanical properties, is in its infancy. Solidifying and functionalizing nanowires-based organogels by designing the gelator structure remains challenging. Here, we fabricate Ca2-P2W16 and Ca2-P2W15M nanowires utilizing highly charged [Ca2P2W16O60]10− and [Ca2P2W15MO60]14−/13− cluster units, respectively, which are then employed for preparing organogels. The mechanical performance and stability of prepared organogels are improved due to the enhanced interactions between nanowires and locked organic molecules. Compressive stress and tensile stress of Ca2-P2W16 nanowires-based organogel reach 34.5 and 29.0 kPa, respectively. The critical gel concentration of Ca2-P2W16 nanowires is as low as 0.28%. Single-molecule force spectroscopy confirms that the connections between cluster units and linkers can regulate the flexibility of nanowires. Furthermore, the incorporation of fluorophores into the organogels adds fluorescence properties. This work reveals the relationships between the microstructures of inorganic gelators and the properties of organogels, guiding the synthesis of high-performance and functional organogels. Functionalizing inorganic organogels is a challenge and can have a negative impact on their mechanical properties. Polymer dielectrics with high breakdown strength (Eb) and high efficiency are urgently demanded in advanced electrical and electronic systems, yet their energy density (Ue) is limited due to low dielectric constant and high loss at elevated temperatures. Conventional inorganic fillers with diameters from nano to micrometers can only increase er at the cost of compromised Eb and Ue due to their poor compatibility with polymer matrix. Herein, hydroxyapa-tite (HAP) sub-nanowires with a diameter of "0.9 nm are incorporated in polyetherimide (PEI) matrix to form HAP/PEI sub-nanocomposites. er and Eb of the composites are concomitantly enhanced with only 0.5 wt.% of HAP sub-nanowires, leading to high Ue of 5.14 (@150 °C) and 3.1 J cm-3 (@200 °C] with efficiency of 90% and high-temperature stability up to 3 x 105 chargedischarge cycles at 200 °C. Microstructural analysis and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the sub-nanowires with comparable diameter as polymer chains induce enormous interfacial area, substantially increase mobility of polymer chains and form dense traps for charge carriers. Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters with atomic precision structures are promising candidates construct functional nanomaterials via self‐assembly. Non‐covalent interactions at molecular levels can govern the self‐assembly of POM clusters, for which the precise control of POM‐based assemblies can be realized at single‐cluster levels. This mini‐review focuses on the synthesis and properties of POM‐based nanostructures, including amphiphilic POM assemblies and co‐assemblies of POM clusters and other subnanometer building blocks. Several synthetic strategies have been developed for rational control of POM‐based assemblies in terms of morphologies, compositions and properties. 1D subnanometer POM assemblies demonstrate remarkable enhanced mechanical properties due to the topological interactions between nanowires and surroundings. Sub‐nanowires (SNWs) exhibit great potential applications in nanocomposites owing to their high specific surface area, high flexibility, and similarity to polymer chains in dimension, which are a good entry point to bridge inorganic materials and polymer materials. Herein, we synthesized hydroxyapatite sub‐nanowires (HAP SNWs) and engineered hydroxyapatite sub‐nanowires/polyimide (HSP) gels and films by simple mixing of HAP SNWs and polyimide (PI). Benefiting from the interactions between HAP SNWs and PI, these nanocomposites were a continuous hybrid network. As the increase of HAP SNWs contents, the viscosity and modulus of HSP gels were greatly improved by one or two orders of magnitude compared with PI gel. HSP films not only maintained high transparency but also gained high haze, as well as exhibited enhanced Young's modulus. Although significant progress is achieved for the synthesis of noble metal‐based nanocrystals (NCs), the construction of nanostructures with switchable dimensionality is not reported yet. Herein, a facile and general approach for the synthesis of multimetallic (PtCuPb and PtAgPb) NCs with dimensional‐switching properties by manipulating the reduction rate involved in the growth of 2D nanosheets (2D‐NS) and 1D nanowires (1D‐NW) is presented. At a slow reduction rate, PtCuPb and PtAgPb NCs grow to form 2D‐NS, in contrast, at a fast reduction rate, dimensionality alteration occurs to form 1D‐NW. This 2D‐NS to 1D‐NW transition generates compressive surface strain in PtCuPb‐NW with unique intermetallic core, active surface composition and exposes facet to boost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In PtCuPb‐NW, compressive strain shifting the d‐band electronic structure of platinum and weakening chemisorption of oxygenated species are shown. In detail, PtCuPb‐NW/C exhibits superior specific and mass activities (4.91 mA cm−2 and 2.65 A mgPt−1) for ORR that are ≈19 and ≈15 times higher than the commercial Pt/C. The observations made and chemical principles unveiled in this effort indicate that a general approach exists for dimensional‐switching and show a new class of Pt‐based electrocatalysts with enhanced performance for fuel cells. Sub‐1 nm nanowires (SNWs) combine the properties of inorganic materials and polymers. They can be highly oriented through assembly, and can also be easily processed. Meanwhile, aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) show high potential for optical applications, but they are usually hard to process. The combination of SNWs and AIEgens can enrich both of their applications. In this study, we report that the fluorescence emission intensity of the AIEgens–SNW dispersion is dramatically enhanced due to the flexibility of SNWs. Furthermore, we fabricate two kinds of functional films with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and linearly polarized luminescence (LPL) activities. The construction of CPL materials didn't require any chiral chemicals. The construction of LPL materials didn't require an additional stretching process. Sub‐nanometric materials (SNMs) are an attractive scope in recent years due to their atomic‐level size and unique properties. Among various performances of SNMs, photothermal energy conversion is one of the most important ones because it can efficiently utilize the light energy. Herein, the SNMs with photothermal energy conversion behaviors and their applications are reviewed. First, a hydrothermal/solvothermal method for the synthesis of SNMs is systematically discussed, including the LaMer pathway and the cluster–nuclei coassembly pathway. Based on this synthetic strategy, many kinds of SNMs with different morphologies are successfully prepared, such as nanorings, nanowires, nanosheets, and nanobelts. These SNMs exhibit excellent photothermal performance under the laser or solar irradiation according to their different light absorption ranges. These enhanced absorption performances of SNMs are induced by the mechanism of plasmonic localized heating or nonradiative relaxation. Finally, the applications of the photothermal SNMs are illustrated. The SNMs with photothermal behaviors can be widely applied in the fields of solar vapor generation, biomedicine, and light‐responsive composites construction. CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanowires and nanorods are important 1D and quasi 1D semiconductor nanomaterials. They have shown significant prospect in optic and optoelectronic applications, especially for their adaptability to flexible devices, good carrier transport performance, polarized absorption, and emission properties. Due to the high dependence of the property to the morphology, it is crucial to develop synthesis methods with continuous diameter and length tunability of the 1D/quasi 1D perovskites. In this report, a feasibly room temperature synthesis method was developed for ultrathin CsPbX3(X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanowires. By aging the CsPbBr3 nanowires (≈2*500 nm) under ambient condition with proper concentration and time, the nanowires are transformed to nanorods with controllable diameter and length. Reversibly, the nanorods can be transformed back to nanowires. Equilibrium mechanism is adopted to understand the morphology evolution, and hopefully could be generally applied to many other nano materials. The polarized optoelectronic properties of the nanowires and nanorods are interpreted by a model based on the two‐channel anisotropies measurement. As a bridge between nanocrystal catalysts and single‐atom catalysts, single‐unit‐cell catalysts seem at first glance to be unavailable for catalysis due to quantum effects and synthetic difficulties. Here, 24 nm Cu9S5 nanowires are synthesized via the LaMer pathway. Interestingly, when polyoxometalate (POM) clusters are introduced during the nucleation process, the 0.9 nm Cu9S5 nanowires are finally formed via covalent co‐assembly, analog to A–B–A–B‐type block co‐polymerization in the polymer field ("A" and "B" represent Cu9S5 unit cells and POM clusters, respectively). Multiple characterizations show that Cu9S5 exists as single‐unit‐cell structure. Therefore, each unit cell can work as an isolated active site. The single‐unit‐cell structure exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of formic acid (82.0% at −0.8 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) during CO2 electroreduction, while the nanocrystal structure generates HCOO−, methanol, and ethanol with low FEs. The simultaneous production of CO/H2 mixture (syngas) from photoreduction of CO2 and H2O is highly promising. However, the relationships between structure, composition, crystallinity, and photocatalytic performance are still indistinct. Here, amorphous ultrathin CoO nanowires and polyoxometalate incorporated nanowires with even lower crystallinity were synthesized. The POM‐incorporated ultrathin nanowires exhibit high photocatalytic syngas production activity, reaching H2 and CO evolution rates of 11555 and 4165 μmol g−1 h−1 respectively. Further experiments indicate that the ultrathin morphology and incorporation of POM both contribute to the superior performance. Inorganic single crystals with anisotropic structures usually suffer from high brittleness and stiffness. Flexible polymers are used to replace inorganic crystals, but the hot‐stretching‐induced orientation process is tedious, and oriented molecular chains tend to revert to random coils during aging. To overcome these obstacles and using the similarities between sub‐1 nm nanowires (NWs) and linear polymers, we successfully fabricated anisotropic, transparent, flexible, and stable (ATFS) NW films with great potential for optical applications through a wet‐spinning method. The NW films show birefringence, and their birefractive index is higher than that of many polymers. They also showed polarized absorption of UV light and anisotropic scattering of visible light. The integrated films composed of NWs and quantum dots showed good fluorescence polarization. The tedious synthesis of quantum rods and fabrication of oriented polymer films can thus be avoided. Rational design and construction of novel nanostructures with outstanding functions, and investigation on the relationship between their structures and properties have continuously been intriguing but are still challenging now. In this work, 1D TiO2(B) hierarchitectures with epitaxial {100} and {010} high-energy-facetted ultrathin 2D nanosheets that are parallel to the c-axis are demonstrated for the first time. These hierarchitectures show much improved photochemical properties as compared with the nanoparticles and nanowires as well as the physical mixture of nanosheets and nanowires. These include photodegradation of methyl orange and water splitting, due to the remarkably increased surface area and active sites, and enhanced separation and transport of charge carriers. Multidimensional nano-heterostructures (NHSs) that have unique dimensionality-dependent integrative and synergic effects are intriguing but still underdeveloped. Here, we report the first helical 1D/2D epitaxial NHS between CdS and ZnIn2S4. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the mismatches in lattice and dangling bonds between 1D and 2D units govern the growth procedure. The resulting well-defined interface induces the delocalized interface states, thus facilitate the charge transfer and enhance the performance in the photoelectrochemical cells. We foresee that the mechanistic insights gained and the electronic structures revealed would inspire the design of more complex 1D/2D NHSs with outstanding functionalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was found that calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and hydroxyapatite (Ca10(OH)2(PO4)6), which are two crucial constituents of the most abundant minerals in nature and very important bioinorganic components in the tissues of mineralizing organisms, can form solid solutions in a wide range of PO43−/CO32− (P/C) ratios at low temperature when prepared as ultrathin nanowire structures. This is due to the special reactivity of ultrasmall nanocrystals, which can effectively lower the synthetic temperature and promote the formation of solid solutions. The as-prepared ultrathin nanowires with suitable P/C ratios presented strong blue luminescence due to the existence of abundant defects strengthened by CO32−. If used as the matrix, the as-prepared ultrathin nanowires demonstrated bright green or red luminescent properties when doped with Tb3+ or Eu3+ ions, and simultaneously retained their original morphologies. These three kinds of fluorescent nanowires could reproduce a full range of luminescence colors based on additive color mixtures of the three primary colors (red, green, and blue). In addition, under the same reaction system, ultrafine rare-earth-doped (Ce3+, Tb3+, Eu3+) nanowires (about 1 nm in diameter) were synthesized by using a one-step hydrothermal process, which further pushed the size of the Ca-PO4-CO3 nanobuilding blocks to one unit cell region. Abstract: Pure-phase α-MnO2 and β-MnO2 nanowires/nanorods were synthesized through an easy solution-based hydrothermal method, and the effect of the manganese dioxide phase on the activity of MnO2 and Ag/MnO2 for the oxidation of CO was investigated. MnO2 is an effective catalyst in CO oxidation, and its activity depends on the crystal phase of MnO2. α-MnO2 exhibits a higher activity than β-MnO2, because the α-MnO2 nanowires can be reduced more easily than the β-MnO2 nanorods. Moreover, when Ag was introduced to MnO2, a strong interaction occurred between Ag and MnO2. The catalytic activity clearly correlates with this interaction, which is determined by crystal phase and surface structure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this manuscript, series of silicates nanowires, such as calcium silicate, strontium silicate, barium silicate, zinc silicate and cadmium silicate, etc., have been successfully prepared from a water–ethanol mixed solution system through a hydrothermal synthetic way. The formation process of these silicates nanowires has been studied in detail. Conventional inorganic nanowire (NW) fibers are usually not stretchable and elastic, which may limit their practical applications. Inspired by the similarity between inorganic sub‐1 nm NWs and polymer chains in dimension, and helical spring‐like structure of cellulose in cherry bark, highly flexible and stretchable NW superlattice fibers composed of sub‐1 nm GdOOH NWs are fabricated. The NW fibers could be twined, bent, twisted, and tied without any damage. When the strain is less than 10%, the fibers present elastic deformation. The elongation at break of the fibers usually reaches ≈40–50% and the highest elongation could reach ≈86%. Excellent flexibility and stretchability of the NW fibers are attributed to the well‐aligned spring‐like NWs assembled superlattice, which are demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy tests, synchrotron small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and obvious birefringence. Moreover, NW‐nanoparticle (NP) fibers are fabricated, inspired by inorganic nanoparticle–reinforced polymers. The strength is improved compared with the NW fibers. Based on this work, it is possible to fabricate multifunctional, flexible, and stretchable inorganic NW materials composed of different inorganic sub‐1 nm NWs, which may be useful in practical applications. Utilizing sustainable energy for chemical activation of small molecules, such as CO2, to produce important chemical feedstocks is highly desirable. The simultaneous production of CO/H2 mixture (syngas) from photoreduction of CO2 and H2O is highly promising. However, the relationships between structure, composition, crystallinity, and photocatalytic performance are still indistinct. Here, amorphous ultrathin CoO nanowires and polyoxometalate incorporated nanowires with even lower crystallinity were synthesized. The POM‐incorporated ultrathin nanowires exhibit high photocatalytic syngas production activity, reaching H2 and CO evolution rates of 11555 and 4165 μmol g−1 h−1 respectively. Further experiments indicate that the ultrathin morphology and incorporation of POM both contribute to the superior performance. Sn0[sub2] quantum dots (QDs) and ultrathin nanowires (NWs) with diameters of ∼O.5-2.5 and -∼1 .5-4.5 nm, respectively, were controllably synthesized in a simple solution system. They are supposed to be ideal models for studying the continuous evolution of the quantum-confinement effect in SnO[sub2] QDs systems. The observed transition from strong to weak quantum confinement in SnO[sub2] QDs and ultrathin NWs is interpreted through the use of the Brus effective-mass approximation and the Nosaka finite-depth well model. Photoluminescence properties that were coinfluenced by size effects, defects (oxygen vacancies), and surface capping are discussed in detail. With the SnO[sub2] QDs as building blocks, various 2D porous structures with ordered hexagonal, distorted hexagonal, and square patterns were prepared on silicon-wafer surfaces and exhibited optical features of 2D photonic crystals and enhanced gas sensitivity.
