The heat/mass transfer in a rotating smooth channel with bleed flow by a naphthalene sublimation method is investigated. The tripping flow induced by the bleed flow enhances and influences the heat/mass transfer.

Intermolecular electron transfer (ELT) from a series of naphthalene derivatives (Npd) in the higher triplet excited states (Tn) to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in Ar-saturated acetonitrile was observed using the two-color two-laser flash photolysis method. The ELT efficiency depended upon the driving force of the triplet energy transfer (ENT), the ELT became apparent when sufficient free energy change of ELT was attained.

The treatment of 1,8-bis(diphenylhydroxymethyl)naphthalene with a mixture of [HBF(sub 4)](sub aq) and (CF(sub 3)CO)(sub 2)O affords the corresponding dication, 1,8-bis(diphenylmethylium)naphthalenediyl (1(super 2+)), which is separated as the [BF(sub 4)(super -)] salt. This dication is characterized and its structure is studied computationally.

Vibrational analysis is carried out for the radical anions of naphthalene-[h.sub.8] and [-d.sub.8]. Their infrared (IR) spectra are observed in tetrahydrofuran by using a cell designed for IR measurements of unstable species. The vibrational force field and the IR intensifies are calculated by the ab initio molecular orbital and density functional methods at various theoretical levels. As found in the cases of the radical cations of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). a few strong IR bands with intensities of the order of [10.sup.2] km [mol.sup.-1] are observed in the 1700-900 [cm.sup.-1] region. These observed spectral features are well reproduced by the calculations at the CASSCF (complete active space self-consistent field) and B3LYP (Becke's three-parameter hybrid method using the Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional) levels. The calculation at the B3LYP level gives a better fit between the observed and calculated absolute IR intensifies. Normal modes and the origin of the strong IR intensities characteristic of the radical anions are discussed in terms of molecular symmetry coordinates and the dipole derivatives based on these coordinates. It is round that the IR intensities of the [b.sub.2u],, modes below 2000 [cm.sup.-1] are dominated by the contribution from one molecular symmetry coordinate, in which the C--C bonds in one ring stretch while those in the other ring shrink. The mechanism that gives rise to the strong IR intensity for this vibration is discussed by examining the changes in the electronic structure induced by this vibration. The uptake of NPH at the pore openings of zeolite microcrystals is provoked by the sorption process, and the simultaneous ionization occurs through abstraction of electron. It was found that the ZSM-5 zeolite participates as an electron donor in ET reaction.

A unique C2-symmetric chiral quaternary ammonium bromide is designed, which can be readily synthesized starting from commercially available optically pure 1.1'-bi-2-naphthol. The structures of the assembled N-spiro chiral quaternary ammonium bromides 11a and 11f are determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

A number of 9-anthrylsilanes including ASi(sub n) and ASi(sub n)A are synthesized and their photochemistry is studied. Photoexcited anthryldisilanes exhibit some unique interactions between the sigma(Si-Si) and pi(anthryl)* groups.

A novel amphiphilic compound 2-(heptadecyl) naphthal[2,3]imidazole (NplmC17) is synthesized, and its coordination with AgNO3 in situ in the monolayer at the air/water interface and ex situ in the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film on solid substrate is investigated. It is found that interfacial coordination between NplmC17 and Ag(I) ion occurred both in the monolayer and in the LB film.

Kinetic effects on H-atom abstractions from the diols in HB acceptor (HBA) solvents can be quantitatively accounted for over at least 50% of the available range of solvent HBA activities on a basis of a single reactive OH group, the 'free' OH. The shift in frequency of the intramolecularly H-bonded OH group of suitable diols in CCl4 induced by low concentrations of additives might be a quick and simple method for estimating beta2H values.

The treatment of 1-methoxynaphthalene with n-butyllithium (n-Buli) in hydrocarbon solvents and subsequent quench with CO(sub 2) were reported to release a mixture of 1-methoxy-2-naphthoic acid and 1-methoxy-8-naphthoic acid. The reaction of 1-methoxynaphthalene with n-Bili and 1-methoxynaphthalene equiv of TMEDA resulted in more than 99% 2-lithiation (yield 60%).

A series of complexes of the form TpRe(CO)(L)(eta(super 2)-naphthalene) undergoes tandem electophile/nucleophile addition reactions with a high degree of regiocontrol depending on the auxiliary ligand. The unbound ring of the naphthalenium extends toward L, nucleophilic attack at C2 allows the C=C bond of the resulting 1,2-dihydronaphthalene to be orthogonal to the Re-Co pi bonds, thus maximizing the back-bonding interaction with the dihydronaphthalene.

Applications of bile acids in organic synthesis and possibilities of synthesizing derivatives of 1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diol on a 7-dexoycholic acid template are studied. This demonstrates the first application of the bile acid template for asymmetric binapthol coupling.

A general synthetic route for the preparation of optically active TTF and TCAQ dimers containing binaphthyl units is developed. The synthesis of binaphthyl derivatives bifunctionalized with triphenylophosphine, phosphonate, hydroxymethyl, and bromomethyl groups will allow to extend this synthetic route to many other electroactive dimers with enhanced dimensionality and even to different conjugated-non-conjugated block copolymers.

The preparation and characterization of the isomeric dinuclear complexes [{Mo(Tp(super Me,Me)(O)Cl}(sub 2)(mu-C(sub 10)H6O2)] according to the substitution pattern of the bridging ligand and their magnetic, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties are described. The electronic and the magnetic properties of these complexes show a clear demarcation into two sets according to the bridging-ligand topology.

Naphthalene diimide-neomycin and anthraquinone-neomycin conjugates were synthesized and utilized along with pre-synthesized pyrene-neomycin BQQ-neomycin to perform thermodynamic studies on the interactions between intercalator-neomycin conjugates and a DNA polynucleotide triplex [poly(dA)*2poly(dT)]. The results provide insight into the binding affinity of intercalator-neomycin conjugates for poly(dA)*2poly(dT) which increases as a function of the surface area of the intercalator moiety.

The syntheses of the first 2,3-dialkoxy-substituted naphthalene ring-based macrocycles, which have calixarene-like structures, are reported. The complexation properties of these octahomotetraoxaisocalix- [4] naphthalenes were investigated.

Radical cations of naphthalene and 4-methylpyrene are generated for the first time in the high conversion efficiencies in cryogenic water-ices at 15 K through vacuum ultraviolet photolysis. With these radical cations it is shown that cryogenic water-ices at temperatures below 50 K are of good optical quality and inert matrices to isolate and study the electronic spectroscopic properties of neutral and ionic species in the wavelength region 250-900 nm.

Ab initio and density functional calculations are used for the characterization of the lowest electronic excited states of 1,1'-, 1,2'- and 2,2'- binaphthyl, with the determination of their equilibrium geometries, low-frequency vibrations, and torsional potentials. Definitive assignment of a number of the observed low-frequency torsional and out-of-plane bending modes, as well as a more confident identification of the conformation of the observed excited states is provided.

The ablation of liquid naphthalene derivatives inducted by 248-nm pulsed excimer laser irradiation was investigated. The results indicate that a photothermal effect is dominant for laser ablation in liquid naphthalene derivatives.

A refined procedure of the principal component analysis (PCA) is used to investigate the combined temperature and excitation wavelength effects on the photophysical and photochemical behavior of the rotamer mixture of trans-1,2-di(2-naphthyl)ethene(trans-2,2'-DNE). The presence of the three rotamers in dynamic equilibrium in S(sub 0), which plays a relevant role in driving the deactivation channels of their lowest excited singlet state toward radiative and/or reactive pathways is derived from the result of this method.

Density functional B3LYP and ab initio CASSCF calculations are used to investigate various mechanisms of phenanthrene formation from biphenyl and naphthalene. Three competitive reaction pathways contributing to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) formation in combustion is studied.

The embedding of dimethyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate (DMN) in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix is described. It is show that Forster excitation energy transfer takes place among the DMN monomers and the Forster radius of the monomer is determined by time-resolved fluorescence depolarization experiments to be 23 plusmn 3 A angstrom.

Pristine and naphthalene-adsorbed (001) surfaces of the organic conducting salt (TMTSF)2PF6 were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to determine the structure of epitaxial monolayer films of naphthalene on the (001) surface. The STM images recorded for the pristine (001) surface correspond to the cation layer of (TMTSF)2PF6, and each circular bright spot of the molecular-resolution STM images represents the three hydrogen atoms of the most protruding methyl group of a TMTSF molecule on the (001) surface.

A striking manifestation of ion pairing is represented by the unambiguous EPR observation of nuclear hyperfine splitting form alkali metal counterion of organic radicals such as naphthalene (C10H8) and cyclooactatetraene (C8H8). The study shows that when the environmental and thermal conditions are met for the observation of the [6]annulyne anion radical, the cyclohexadiene-eta(super 2)-ynyl potassium zwitterion radical will be found.

Reactions of [M(sub 2)(O(sub 2)CCH(sub 3))(sub 2)(CH(sub 3)CN)(sub 6)][BF(sub 4)](sub 2) (M = Mo, Rh) and Ru(sub 2)(O(sub 2)CCH(sub 3))(sub 4)Cl with pynp (2-)2pyridyl-1,8-naphthyridine) yield the homologous series of cations [M(sub 2)(O(sub 2)CCH(sub3))(sub 2)(pynp)(sub 2)](super 2+). Electrochemistry revealed interesting redox chemistry for both the dimolybdenum and diruthenium derivatives.
