Search

In astroparticle, nuclear and subnuclear physics, low-counting experiments play an increasingly important role in the investigation of rare processes such as dark matter, double beta decay, some neutrino processes and low-background spectrometry. Extremely low-background features are more and more required to produce detectors and apparata of suitable sensitivity. Over time, a great deal of interest and attention in developing experimental techniques suitable to improve, verify and maintain the radiopurity of these detectors has arisen. In this paper, the characterization of inorganic crystal scintillators (such as, e.g., NaI(Tl), ZnWO4 and CdWO4) using α, β and γ radioactive sources and the main experimental techniques applied in the field to quantitatively identify the radioactive contaminants are highlighted; in particular, we focus on inorganic crystal scintillators, widely used in rare processes investigation, considering their applications at noncryogenic temperatures in the framework of the DAMA experiment activities at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics, Roma, Italy).

An experiment to measure the 2β – decay of 150Nd to excited levels of 150Sm using a highly purified 2.381 kg sample of Nd2O3 is in progress in the low-background set-up with 4 HPGe detectors (∼225 cm3 volume each). The detector is located deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). Two γ quanta with energies 334.0 keV and 406.5 keV emitted after deexcitation of the 01 + excited level of 150Sm have been observed in the experimental data accumulated over 39898 h. The preliminary half-life value for 2β – decay of 150Nd to the first 0+ excited level in 150Sm (after the exposure of 10.8 kg × yr) was estimated as T 1 / 2 = 9.7 − 1.9 + 2.9 stat . ± 1.5 syst . × 10 19 yr. The experiment is under data taking with the aim to improve the statistical uncertainties.

Double-beta processes in $^{184}$Os and $^{192}$Os were searched for over 15851 h at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. by using a 118 g ultra-pure osmium sample installed on the endcap of a 112 cm$^3$ ultra-low-background broad-energy germanium detector. New limits on double-electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in $^{184}$Os were set at the level of $\lim T_{1/2} \sim 10^{16}-10^{17}$ yr. In particular the $2\nu$2K and $2\nu$KL decays of $^{184}$Os to the ground state of $^{184}$W are restricted as $T_{1/2}\geq3.0\times 10^{16}$ yr and $T_{1/2}\geq2.0\times 10^{16}$ yr, respectively. A lower limit on the half-life for the double-beta decay of $^{192}$Os to the first excited level of $^{192}$Pt was set as $\lim T_{1/2}=2.0\times 10^{20}$ yr at 90\% C.L., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

A search for $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay of naturally occurring osmium isotopes to the lowest excited levels of daughter nuclei has been performed by using an ultra-low-background broad-energy germanium $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ detector with a volume of 112 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ and an ultrapure osmium sample with a mass of 118 g at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The isotopic composition of the osmium sample has been measured with high precision using negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry. After 15851 h of data taking with the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ detector, no effect has been detected, and lower limits on the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays were set at level of $lim{T}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\approx}{10}^{15}--{10}^{19}$ yr. The limits for the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays of $^{184}\mathrm{Os}$ and $^{186}\mathrm{Os}$ to the first excited levels of daughter nuclei, ${T}_{1/2}(^{184}\mathrm{Os})\ensuremath{\ge}6.8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{15}$ yr and ${T}_{1/2}(^{186}\mathrm{Os})\ensuremath{\ge}3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{17}$ yr (at 90% C.L.), exceed the present theoretical estimates of the decays' half-lives. For $^{189}\mathrm{Os}$ and $^{192}\mathrm{Os}$ also decays to the ground states of the daughter nuclei were searched for due to the instability of the daughter nuclides relative to $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay.

Residual radioactive contaminants of a caesium hafnium chloride (Cs$_2$HfCl$_6$) crystal scintillator have been measured in a low background setup at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN, Italy. The total alpha activity of the detector is at the level of 7.8(3) mBq/kg. The results of direct studies of the $\alpha$ decay of naturally occurring Hf isotopes that have been performed using the "source=detector" approach are presented. The first results obtained by the DAMA/LIBRA–phase2 experiment with the data collected deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory over 6 independent annual cycles (corresponding to a total exposure of 1.13 ton × yr) are presented. The DAMA/LIBRA–phase2 apparatus, about 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl), profits of a second generation high quantum efficiency photomultipliers and of new electronics; in the new configuration the software energy threshold is at 1 keV. The DAMA/LIBRA–phase2 data confirm the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature, at 9.5 σ C.L. in the energy region (1-6) keV. In the energy region between 2 and 6 keV, where data are also available from DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 the achieved C.L. for the full exposure (2.46 ton × yr) is 12.9 σ.

The first direct search for the double electron capture ($2\epsilon$) and the electron capture with positron emission ($\epsilon\beta^+$) in $^{144}$Sm to the ground state and to the excited levels of $^{144}$Nd was realized by measuring - over 1899 h - a 342 g sample of highly purified samarium oxide (Sm$_2$O$_3$) with the ultra-low background HP-Ge $\gamma$ spectrometer GeCris (465 cm$^3$) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). No effect was observed and half-life limits were estimated at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.1-1.3) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, for the first time half-life limits of the double beta ($2\beta^-$) decay of $^{154}$Sm to several excited levels of $^{154}$Gd have been set; they are at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.06-8) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.)., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures and 4 tables

Crystal scintillators and in particular inorganic scintillators play an important role in the investigation of Dark Matter (DM) and other rare processes. The investigation of a DM signature, as the annual modulation, or the directionality technique requires the use of highly radiopure detectors able to explore the very low energy region maintaining a high stability of the running conditions. In this paper, the cases of NaI(Tl), ZnWO4 and SrI2(Eu) crystal scintillators are described in the framework of our activities at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN. Their role, the obtained results in DM investigation, as well as their potential and perspectives for the future are reviewed.

The DAMA/LIBRA experiment, consisting of about 250 kg of highly radio-pure NaI(Tl) target, is running deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N.; its main aim is the investigation of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo by means of the model independent DM annual modulation signature. In this paper we briefly summarize the results obtained in its first phase of measurements (DAMA/LIBRA–phase1) lasted for 7 annual cycles with a total exposure of 1.04 ton x year . The DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 and the former DAMA/NaI data (cumulative exposure 1.33 ton x year, corresponding to 14 annual cycles) give evidence at 9.3 σ C.L. for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature has been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade. At fall 2010 a relevant upgrade of the experiment has been performed: all the PMTs have been replaced by new ones having higher quantum efficiency. After some optimization periods, a new phase of measurement, DAMA/LIBRA–phase2, has began in this new configuration with increased sensitivity. Some of the perspectives of the presently running DAMA/LIBRA–phase2 are mentioned.

The first model independent results obtained by the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 experiment are presented. The data have been collected over 6 annual cycles corresponding to a total exposure of 1.13 ton $\times$ yr, deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. The DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 apparatus, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl), profits from a second generation high quantum efficiency photomultipliers and of new electronics with respect to DAMA/LIBRA-phase1. The improved experimental configuration has also allowed to lower the software energy threshold. New data analysis strategies are presented. The DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 data confirm the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter (DM) annual modulation signature, at 9.5 $\sigma$ C.L. in the energy region (1-6) keV. In the energy region between 2 and 6 keV, where data are also available from DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 (exposure $1.33$ ton $\times$ yr, collected over 14 annual cycles), the achieved C.L. for the full exposure (2.46 ton $\times$ yr) is 12.9 $\sigma$; the modulation amplitude of the single-hit scintillation events is: $(0.0103 \pm 0.0008)$ cpd/kg/keV, the measured phase is $(145 \pm 5)$ days and the measured period is $(0.999 \pm 0.001)$ yr, all these values are well in agreement with those expected for DM particles. No systematics or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature (i.e. to account for the whole measured modulation amplitude and to simultaneously satisfy all the requirements of the signature), has been found or suggested by anyone throughout some decades thus far., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables. International audience; Recent developments, results, and perspectives arising from double beta decay experiments at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN by using HPGe detectors and crystal scintillators and by exploiting various approaches and different isotopes are summarized. The measurements here presented have been performed in the experimental set-ups of the DAMA collaboration. These setups are optimized for low-background studies and operate deep underground at LNGS. The presented results are of significant value to the field, and the sensitivity achieved for some of the considered isotopes is one of the best available to date.

The present DAMA/LIBRA experiment and the former DAMA/NaI one (the first generation experiment having an exposed mass of about 100 kg) have released so far results corresponding to a total exposure of 1.17 ton x year over 13 annual cycles. They provide a model independent evidence of the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo at 8.9 sigma C.L. After the upgrade at fall 2010 when all the PMTs have been replaced with new ones having higher quantum efficiency, the feasibility to decrease the software energy threshold has been demonstrated and the set-up is running in this new configuration, named DAMA/LIBRA-phase2. In this experiment a 106CdWO4 crystal scintillator (215 g) enriched in 106Cd to 66%, used in previous measurements in different configurations, is now in measurement in coincidence with two large volume low background CdWO4 crystal scintillators in close geometry. This further measurement will allow us to reach a sensitivity at the level of the most sensitive double β+ experiments (T1/2 ≃ 1020 −1022 yr) and to explore the region of the theoretical expectations for some decay modes.An experiment to search for double beta decay in 106Cd is running in the DAMA/CRYS set-up at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The presence of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the galactic halo can be unambiguously pointed out in a model-independent way by exploiting the DM annual modulation signature with an apparatus of specific features placed deep underground. At present DAMA/LIBRA is running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. and has presented so far the results obtained with the data collected in the first six annual cycles (exposure 0.87 ton × yr). When including the exposure of the former DAMA/NaI experiment (0.29 ton × yr), the total exposure is 1.17 ton × yr for 13 annual cycles, a value order of magnitude larger than those typically released in the field. These DAMA/LIBRA data have further confirmed the model-independent evidence of the presence of Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo on the basis of the exploited DM signature (8.9 σ C.L. for the cumulative exposure).

The radioactive contamination of ZnWO4 crystal scintillators has been measured deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN in Italy with a total exposure 3197 kg x h. Monte Carlo simulation, time-amplitude and pulse-shape analyses of the data have been applied to estimate the radioactive contamination of the ZnWO4 samples. One of the ZnWO4 crystals has also been tested by ultra-low background gamma spectrometry. The radioactive contaminations of the ZnWO4 samples do not exceed 0.002 -- 0.8 mBq/kg (depending on the radionuclide), the total alpha activity is in the range: 0.2 - 2 mBq/kg. Particular radioactivity, beta active 65Zn and alpha active 180W, has been detected. The effect of the re-crystallization on the radiopurity of the ZnWO4 crystal has been studied. The radioactive contamination of samples of the ceramic details of the set-ups used in the crystals growth has been checked by low background gamma spectrometry. The main aspects of the obtained results are summarized and some comments are addressed.

The DAMA/NaI experiment (≃ 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl)) at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. had the unique feature to effectively investigate the presence of Dark Matter particle in the galactic halo by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature. With a total exposure of more than 10 5 kg × day, collected over seven annual cycles, it has pointed out at 6.3 σ C.L. an effect which satisfies all the many peculiarities of the signature. Neither systematics nor side reactions able to account for the observed effect were found. No experiment whose result can be directly compared in a model independent way with the experimental one of DAMA/NaI is available so far. Several (but still few with respect to the possibilities) corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have also been carried out. At present the second generation DAMA/LIBRA set-up (≃ 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl)) is in operation. Positive model dependent hints have also been pointed out by indirect searches for Dark Matter particles in space experiments and are not in contradiction with DAMA/NaI. Thus, the ongoing of model independent experiment deep underground and the new space experiments foreseen in incoming years will certainly further increase our knowledge of the field.

A new investigation of Pp decay modes in Xe-134 and in Xe-136 is presented. The data have been collected deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN over a period of 8823.54 hours with the similar or equal to 6.5 kg DAMA liquid xenon pure scintillator, filled by Kr-free xenon containing 17.1 % of Xe-134 and 68.8% of Xe-136. New results have been obtained by investigating the neutrinoless ββ decay in 134 Xe deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of INFN by means of the ≃6.5 kg liquid xenon setup of the DAMA experiment. New limits on the half-lives of the β − β − 0 ν (0 + →0 + ) and β − β − 0 ν (0 + →2 + ) decay modes have been obtained. They are: T 1/2 >5.8×10 22 yr (90% C.L.) and T 1/2 >2.6×10 22 yr (90% C.L.), respectively. The T 1/2 limit for β − β − 0 ν (0 + →0 + ) process is about three orders of magnitude higher than the one previously available, while the T 1/2 limit for β − β − 0 ν (0 + →2 + ) has been set for the first time.

The DAMA project is an observatory for rare processes operating deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the main apparatus DAMA/LIBRA is mainly dedicated to the investigation of the presence of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the galactic halo by exploiting the model independent DM annual modulation signature. The present DAMA/LIBRA and the former DAMA/ NaI (exposed masses: ≃ 250 kg and ≃ 100 kg of highly radiopure NaI ( Tl ), respectively) experiments have released so far a total exposure of 1.17 ton × yr, collected over 13 annual cycles. They have obtained a positive model independent result for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo at 8.9σ C.L. Some of the obtained results are shortly summarized and future perspectives mentioned.

Experimental observations and theoretical arguments at Galaxy and larger scales have suggested that a large fraction of the Universe is composed by Dark Matter (DM) particles. This has motivated the DAMA experimental efforts to investigate the presence of such particles in the galactic halo by exploiting a model independent signature with highly radiopure setups deep underground. In this paper, a review of the results obtained with the total exposure of 1.04 ton × yr collected by DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN during seven annual cycles is given. The DAMA/LIBRA–phase1 data give evidence for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo, on the basis of the exploited model independent DM annual modulation signature by using highly radiopure NaI(Tl) target, at 7.5[Formula: see text] C.L. Including also the data of the first generation DAMA/NaI experiment (cumulative exposure 1.33 ton × yr, corresponding to 14 annual cycles), the C.L. is 9.3[Formula: see text] and the modulation amplitude of the single-hit scintillation events in the (2–6) keV energy interval is: (0.0112 ± 0.0012) cpd/kg/keV; the measured phase is (144 ± 7) days and the measured period is (0.998 ± 0.002) yr, values well in agreement with those expected for DM particles. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature has been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade.

New dedicated high quantum efficiency (Q.E.) photomultipliers (PMTs) have been produced by HAMAMATSU company, tested, selected and installed in the DAMA/LIBRA set-up at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N.. In this paper the results obtained in the measurements of various features of these high Q.E. PMTs are reported, and some performances of DAMA/LIBRA in this new configuration are shown.

Double beta processes in 136Ce, 138Ce and 142Ce have been searched for by exploiting the active source approach with the help of a 6.9 g CeCl3 crystal as a scintillator for the first time at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN (Italy). The total measurement time is 1638 h; even such a small exposure has allowed the achievement of some improved half-life limits on 2β decay processes in these isotopes at the level of 1016–1018 yr. In particular (90% C.L.): T0νeβ+1/2(136Ce) ≥ 8.8 × 1016 yr, T2νeβ+1/2(136Ce) ≥2.4 × 1016 yr, T2ν2K1/2(136Ce) ≥3.2 × 1016 yr, T2ν2K1/2(138Ce) ≥4.4 × 1016 yr, and T2ν2β−1/2(142Ce) ≥1.4 × 1018 yr. Possible future perspectives are also briefly addressed.

The DAMA project is an observatory for rare processes and it is operative deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the DAMA/LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes) set-up consists of highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors for a total sensitive exposed mass of ≃250 kg. Recent results, obtained by this set-up by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature of Dark Matter (DM) particles, have confirmed and improved those obtained by the former DAMA/NaI experiment. A model independent evidence for the presence of Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo is cumulatively obtained at 8.2 σ C.L. No systematics or side reactions able to account for the measured modulation amplitude and to contemporaneously satisfy all the many specific requirements of the signature have been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade. An example of one of the many possible model dependent corollary quests for the candidate particles and for the related astrophysical, nuclear and particle physics scenarios is presented considering the whole cumulative exposure. Future perspectives are shortly addressed.

DAMA/LIBRA is running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N.. Here the results obtained with a further exposure of 0.34 ton x yr are presented. They refer to two further annual cycles collected one before and one after the first DAMA/LIBRA upgrade occurred on September/October 2008. The cumulative exposure with those previously released by the former DAMA/NaI and by DAMA/LIBRA is now 1.17 ton x yr, corresponding to 13 annual cycles. The data further confirm the model independent evidence of the presence of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the galactic halo on the basis of the DM annual modulation signature (8.9 sigma C.L. for the cumulative exposure). In particular, with the cumulative exposure the modulation amplitude of the single-hit events in the (2 -- 6) keV energy interval measured in NaI(Tl) target is (0.0116 +- 0.0013) cpd/kg/keV; the measured phase is (146 +- 7) days and the measured period is (0.999 +- 0.002) yr, values well in agreement with those expected for the DM particles., presented at the Int. The low background DAMA/NaI experiment (similar or equal to 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(T1)) at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. investigated the presence of Dark Matter particle in the galactic halo by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature. This experiment has collected data over seven annual cycles for a total exposure of more than 10(5) kg x day and has pointed out at 6.3 sigma C.L. a modulation effect satisfying all the many peculiarities of the signature. Several corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have also been carried out. At present the second generation DAMA/LIBRA setup (similar or equal to 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(T1)) is in operation. A R&D towards possible 1 ton NaI(T1) set-up is also in progress.

Arguments on the investigation of the Dark Matter particles in the galactichalo are addressed. Recent results obtained by the DAMA/LIBRA set-up –exploitingthemodelindependent annualmodulationsignatureforDarkMatter(DM) particles – are shortly summarized. Several (but still few with respect to the many possibilities) corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have also been carried out. At present the second generation DAMA/LIBRA set-up (' 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl)) is in operation. A R&D towards possible ultimate 1 ton NaI(Tl) experiment is also in progress.

The highly radiopure $\simeq$ 250 kg NaI(Tl) DAMA/LIBRA set-up is running at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N.. In this paper the first result obtained by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature for Dark Matter (DM) particles is presented. It refers to an exposure of 0.53 ton$\times$yr. The collected DAMA/LIBRA data satisfy all the many peculiarities of the DM annual modulation signature. Neither systematic effects nor side reactions can account for the observed modulation amplitude and contemporaneously satisfy all the several requirements of this DM signature. Thus, the presence of Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo is supported also by DAMA/LIBRA and, considering the former DAMA/NaI and the present DAMA/LIBRA data all together (total exposure 0.82 ton$\times$yr), the presence of Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo is supported at 8.2 $\sigma$ C.L.., Comment: 40 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables

The DAMA project develops and uses new/improved low background scintil- lation detectors to investigate the Dark Matter (DM) particle component(s) in the galactic halo and rare processes deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N.. Here some highlights of DAMA/LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for Rare processes) as a unique apparatus in direct DM investigation for its full sensitive mass, target material, intrinsic radio-purity, methodological approach and all the controls performed on the experimental parameters are outlined. The DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 and the former DAMA/NaI data (cumulative exposure 1.33 ton × yr, corresponding to 14 annual cycles) have reached a model-independent evidence at 9.3 σ C.L. for the pres- ence of DM particles in the galactic halo exploiting the DM annual modulation signature with highly radio-pure NaI(Tl) target. Some of the perspectives of the presently run- ning DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 are summarised and the powerful tools offered by a model independent strategy of DM investigation are pointed out.

As a result of about five years of new developments, the second-generation LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes) set-tip of the DAMA experiment has been realized and installed in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.M. It is made of similar or equal to250 kg low-background NaI(TI) detectors and has been operative since March 2003. It works as an observatory for rare processes and is mainly devoted to further investigation on the dark matter particle component in the galactic halo. New R&D efforts toward a possible NaI(TI) ton set-up, which we proposed in 1996, have been funded and started in 2003.

The DAMA/NaI experiment (about 100 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl)) was proposed, designed and realised to effectively investigate in a model independent way the presence of a Dark Matter particle component in the galactic halo by exploiting the annual modulation signature. With a total exposure of 107731 kg day, collected over seven annual cycles deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N., it has pointed out -- at 6.3 sigma C.L. -- an effect which satisfies all the peculiarities of the signature and neither systematic effects nor side reactions able to mimic the signature were found. Moreover, several (but still few with respect to the possibilities) corollary model dependent quests for the candidate particle have been carried out. The DAMA liquid Xenon (LXe) experimental set up is running deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. (see Fig. 1) since several years and various upgradings to improve its performance and sensitivity have been carried out. During the 80’s preliminary efforts have been carried out by some of us in the framework of the ”Xelidon’’ experiment, developing various kinds of LXe detectors. Several prototype detectors were built and some related results published (see e.g. ref.l). In particular, these efforts allowed us to identify the best LXe detector for WIMP search; in fact,considering the required: i) low background features; ii) stability and reproducibility of the operating conditions; iii) relatively high duty cycle; iv) high global efficiency, a pure liquid Xenon scintillator employing the smallest number of (easily and highly radio-purifiable) materials was chosen. In addition, the use of ”Kr-free” gas is mandatory to avoid the relevant Kr content normally present in commercial Xenon as well as the suitable choice of the purifier materials. Moreover, in order to obtain a good light response, these preliminary experimental activities have also pointed out the relevance of: i) an initial vacuum (before filling) of order of mbar; ii) the highest initial purification level of the Xenon gas; iii) absence of significantly

Cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82% ($^{116}$CdWO$_4$, total mass of $\approx$1.2 kg) are used to search for 2$\beta$ decay of $^{116}$Cd deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The radioactive contamination of the $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystals has been studied carefully to reconstruct the background of the detector. The measured half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to 2$\nu$2$\beta$ decay is $T^{2\nu2\beta}_{1/2}$ = [2.8 $\pm$ 0.05(stat.) $\pm$ 0.4(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{19}$ yr, in agreement with the results of previous experiments. The obtained limit on the 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{116}$Cd (considering the data of the last 8696 h run with an advanced background 0.12(2) counts/yr/kg/keV in the energy interval 2.7-2.9 MeV) is $T_{1/2} \ge 1.0 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. The sensitivity of the experiment to the $0\nu2\beta$ process is $\lim T_{1/2} = 3 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. over 5 years of the measurements and it can be advanced (by further reduction of the background by a factor 3-30) to the level of $\lim T_{1/2} = (0.5-1.5) \times 10^{24}$ yr for the same period of the data taking., Comment: Contribution to Proc. of Int.
