Helical symmetry is invariance under a one-dimensional group of rigid motions generated by a simultaneous rotation around a fixed axis and translation along the same axis. The key parameter in helical symmetry is the step or pitch, the magnitude of the translation after rotating one full turn around the symmetry axis. In this article we study the limits of three-dimensional helical viscous and inviscid incompressible flows in an infinite circular pipe, with respectively no-slip and no-penetration boundary conditions, as the step approaches infinity. We show that, as the step becomes large, the three-dimensional helical flow approaches a planar flow, which is governed by the so-called two-and-half Navier–Stokes and Euler equations, respectively.

Lei and Lin [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64 (2011), pp. 1297–1304] have recently given a proof of a global mild solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in function spaces based on the Wiener algebra. An alternative proof of existence of these solutions was then developed by Bae [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 143 (2015), pp. 2887–2892], and this new proof allowed for an estimate of the radius of analyticity of the solutions at positive times. We adapt the Bae proof to prove existence of the Lei-Lin solution in the spatially periodic setting, finding an improved bound for the radius of analyticity in this case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show strong convergence of the vorticities in the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus, assuming only that the initial vorticity of the limiting Euler equations is in Lp for some p > 1. This substantially extends a recent result of Constantin, Drivas and Elgindi, who proved strong convergence in the case p = ∞. We consider a sequence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on a bounded domain, in the vanishing viscosity limit. We provide sufficient conditions on the associated vorticity measures, away from the boundary, which ensure that as the viscosity vanishes the sequence converges to a weak solution of the Euler equations. The main assumptions are local interior uniform bounds on the L 1 -norm of vorticity and the local uniform convergence to zero of the total variation of vorticity measure on balls, in the limit of vanishing ball radii. Motivated by the presence of a finite number of determining parameters (degrees of freedom) such as modes, nodes and local spatial averages for dissipative dynamical systems, we present here a continuous data assimilation algorithm for three-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic models. However, to validate the convergence of this algorithm our proofs require the existence of uniform global bounds on the gradients of the solutions of the underlying system in terms of certain combinations of the physical parameters (such as kinematic viscosity, the size of the domain and the forcing term). Therefore our proofs cannot be applied to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations; instead we demonstrate the implementation of this algorithm, for instance, in the context of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-α equations. This algorithm consists of introducing a nudging process through a general type of approximation interpolation operator (which is constructed from observational measurements) that synchronizes the large spatial scales of the approximate solutions with those of unknown solutions of the Navier-Stokes-α equations corresponding to these measurements. Our main result provides conditions on the finite-dimensional spatial resolution of the collected data, sufficient to guarantee that the approximating solution, which is obtained from this collected data, converges to the unknown reference solution over time. In this article we consider viscous flow in the exterior of an obstacle satisfying the standard no-slip boundary condition at the surface of the obstacle. We seek conditions under which solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the exterior domain converge to solutions of the Euler system in the full space when both viscosity and the size of the obstacle vanish. We prove that this convergence is true assuming two hypotheses: first, that the initial exterior domain velocity converges strongly in L2 to the full-space initial velocity and second, that the diameter of the obstacle is smaller than a suitable constant times viscosity, or, in other words, that the obstacle is sufficiently small. The convergence holds as long as the solution to the limit problem is known to exist and stays sufficiently smooth. Abstract: We study the limiting behavior of viscous incompressible flows when the fluid domain is allowed to expand as the viscosity vanishes. We describe precise conditions under which the limiting flow satisfies the full space Euler equations. The argument is based on truncation and on energy estimates, following the structure of the proof of Kato''s criterion for the vanishing viscosity limit. The focus of this paper is on the analysis of the boundary layer and the associated vanishing viscosity limit for two classes of flows with symmetry, namely, Plane-Parallel Channel Flows and Parallel Pipe Flows. We construct explicit boundary layer correctors, which approximate the difference between the Navier–Stokes and the Euler solutions. Using properties of these correctors, we establish convergence of the Navier–Stokes solution to the Euler solution as viscosity vanishes with optimal rates of convergence. In this paper, we are concerned with the vanishing viscosity problem for the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations with helical symmetry, in the whole space. We choose viscosity-dependent initial u 0 ν with helical swirl, an analogue of the swirl component of axisymmetric flow, of magnitude O ( ν ) in the L 2 norm; we assume u 0 ν → u 0 in H 1 .
