Abstract

The development of a novel mixed lanthanide-transition-metal based supramolecular self-assemblies that were made from neodymium and ytterbium-based tetraamide-functionalized cyclen complexes bearing a single 1,10-phenanthroline moiety coordinating to a [Ru.sub.II][(bipy).sub.2] (bipy = bipyridine) unit is presented. It is seen that the excitation of the Ru(II) metal-to-ligand charge-transfer band in water gave rise to long-wavelength sensitized emission from the Yb(III) or Nd(III) centers, observed in the near-infrared.

Abstract

Two series of deuterated cryptates with the lanthanoids Yb and Nd are prepared and the luminescent lifetimes for the corresponding near-IR emission bands are measured. Global fitting of the lifetime data combined with structural analysis has helped in the accurate quantification of the contributions of individual C-H oscillators groups in the ligand to the nonradiative deactivation rates of the emissive lanthanoid states.

The syntheses, spectroscopic and structural properties of a series of cyanoruthenate complexes of hexaazatriphenylene are described. The Ru-based emission in the Nd(III) analogues is quenched by Ru->Lu photoinduced energy transfer, thus resulting in sensitized near-infrared luminescence from Yb(III) and Nd(III).

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the Nd(super 3 +)Yb(super 3+) energy transfer rate in the YAL3(BO3)4 nonlinear laser crystal is investigated from the analysis of fluorescence decay curves recorded in the 10-600 K range. The populations of both Nd(super 3+) and Yb(super 3+) metastable states achieved after continuous-wave Nd(super 3+) excitation is calculated and measured and result is explained in terms of the thermal behavior of both forward and back transfer rates.
