This paper proposes an adaptive output feedback full state constrain (FSC) controller based on the adaptive neural disturbance observer (ANDO) for a nonlinear electro-hydraulic system (NEHS) with unmodeled dynamics. The Barrier Lyapunov Functions (BLFs) are utilized to ensure that all states of the system are specified within the constraints, and the approximation ability of radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) is used to cope with the unknown nonlinear functions. An adaptive neural compensation disturbance observer is elaborated to estimate the compound disturbance and oil leakage fault, effectively addressing these negative effects. Subsequently, observer-based output feedback command filter scheme is developed to diminish the explosion of complexity in the taking derivative procedure and obtain high precise tracking performance. The convergence of tracking errors into a small region around the equilibrium is demonstrated by the Lyapunov stability theory. In this paper, a disturbance observer‐based adaptive neural backstepping integral sliding mode control (BISMC) is developed for a flexible joint robot (FJR) with the integration of an adjustable stiffness rotary actuator (ASRA). This system suffers from unknown system dynamics, external disturbance, and the influence of variable stiffness, which is a challenge for achieving precision tracking performance. Considering the lumped disturbances in FJR generated by the hydraulic system and the stiffness modulation of the ASRA, we investigate the structural dynamics nonlinear model of the FJR system, including hydraulic actuator dynamics. While other linear control strategies are applied for the FJR, the proposed controller uses BISMC, neural networks (NN), and nonlinear disturbance observers to deal with the disadvantages mentioned above. Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) are designed to tackle unknown nonlinear functions, and the disturbance observers are introduced to compensate for the influence of the variable stiffness, disturbance, and the approximation error caused by NN. Simulations and experiments are independently implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed controller. In recent years, reducing the energy consumption in a hydraulic excavator has received deep attention in many studies. The implementation of the novel independent metering valve system (NIMV) has emerged as a promising solution in this regard. However, external factors such as noise, throttling loss, and leakage have negative influences on the tracking precision and energy saving in the NIMV system. In this paper, a novel control method, simple but effective, called a neural network-fractional order-proportional-integral-derivative controller is developed for the NIMV system. In detail, the fractional order-proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller is used to improve the precision, stability, and fast response of the control system due to the inclusion of non-integer orders in the proportional, integral, and derivative terms. Along with that, the auto-tuning algorithm of the neural network controller is applied for adjusting five parameters in the FOPID controller under noise, throttling loss, and leakage. In addition, the proposed controller alleviates the amount of calculation for the system by using model-free control. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller, the simulation and experiment are conducted on the AMESim/MATLAB and a real test bench. As a result, the proposed controller not only operates the NIMV system accurately in the target trajectory but also reduces energy consumption, saving up 23.33% and 29.25% compared to FOPID and PID in the experimental platform, respectively. This paper aims to study on feedback control for a networked system with both uncertain delays and, packet dropouts and disturbances. Here, a so-called robust predictive control (RPC) approach is designed as follows: 1) delays and packet dropouts are accurately detected online by a network problem detector; 2) a so-called proportional-integral-based neural network grey model (PINNGM) is developed in a general form to be capable of forecasting accurately in advance the network problems and the effects of disturbances on the system performance; 3) using the PINNGM outputs, a small adaptive buffer (SAB) is optimally generated on the remote side to deal with the large delays and/or packet dropouts and, therefore, simplify the control design; 4) based on the PINNGM and SAB, an adaptive sampling-based integral state feedback controller is simply constructed to compensate the small delays and disturbances. Thus, the steady-state control performance is achieved with fast response, high adaptability, and robustness. Case studies are finally provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. This paper proposes an advanced position-tracking control approach, referred to as an integrated intelligent nonlinear controller, for a pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) system. Due to the existence of uncertain, unknown, and nonlinear terms in the system dynamics, it is difficult to derive an exact mathematical model with robust control performance. To overcome this problem, the main contributions of this paper are as follows. To actively represent the behavior of the PAM system using a grey-box model, neural networks are employed as equivalent internal dynamics of the system model and optimized online by a Lyapunov-based method. To realize the control objective by effectively compensating for the estimation error, an advanced robust controller is developed from the integration of the designed networks, and improvement of the sliding mode and backstepping techniques. The convergences of both the developed model and the closed-loop control system are guaranteed by Lyapunov functions. As a result, the overall control approach is capable of ensuring the system's performance with fast response, high accuracy, and robustness. We present an indirect robust nonlinear controller for position-tracking control of a pneumatic artificial muscle (PAMs) testing system. The system modeling is reviewed, for which the existence of uncertain, unknown, and nonlinear terms in the internal dynamics is presented. From the obtained results, an online identification method is proposed for estimation of the internal functions with learning rules designed via a Lyapunov derivative function. A robust nonlinear controller is then designed based on the approximated functions to satisfy the control objective under the sliding mode technique. Appropriate selection of the smooth robust gain and the sliding surface ensures convergence of the tracking error to a desired level of performance. Stability of the closed-loop system is proven through another Lyapunov function. The proposed approach is verified and compared with a conventional proportional–integral–differential (PID) controller, adaptive recurrent neural network (ARNN) controller, and robust nonlinear controller in a real-time system with three different kinds of trajectories and loading. Abstract: Pneumatic cylinders are one of the low-cost actuation sources used in industrial and prosthetic application, since they have a high power/weight ratio, high-tension force and long durability. However, problems with the control, oscillatory motion and compliance of pneumatic systems have prevented their widespread use in advanced robotics. To overcome these shortcomings, a number of newer pneumatic actuators have been developed, such as the McKibben Muscle, Rubber Actuator and Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (PAM) Manipulators. In this paper, the solution for position control of a robot arm with slow motion driven by two pneumatic artificial muscles is presented. However, some limitations still exist, such as a deterioration of the performance of transient response due to the changes in the external load. To overcome this problem, a switching algorithm of the control parameter using a learning vector quantization neural network (LVQNN) is proposed in this paper. The LVQNN estimates the external load of the pneumatic artificial muscle manipulator. Abstract: The application of a robot to rehabilitation has become a matter of great concern because of the requirement of functional recovery therapy of arm or limb. A novel pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) actuator which has achieved increased popularity to provide the inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks and another advantages such as high strength and power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source and so on. However, the complex nonlinear dynamics of the PAM manipulator makes it a challenging and appealing system for modeling and control design. The problems with the time variance, compliance, high hysteresis and nonlinearity of pneumatic systems have made it difficult to realize precise position control. In order to realize satisfactory control performance, the effect of nonlinear factors contained in the PAM manipulator must be considered. The purpose of this study is to improve the control performance of 2 axes PAM manipulator using a nonlinear PID controller. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and the neural network, which has powerful capability of learning, adaptation and tackling nonlinearity, brings us a novel nonlinear PID controller using neural network. This proposed controller is appropriate for a kind of plants with nonlinearity uncertainties and disturbances. The experiments were carried out in practical 2 axes PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through the experiments, which suggests its superior performance and disturbance rejection. Abstract: The pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) is undoubtedly the most promising artificial muscle for the actuation of new types of industrial robots such as rubber actuator and PAM manipulators because it provides these advantages such as high strength and high power/weight ratio, low cost, compactness, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, readily available and cheap power source, inherent safety and mobility assistance to humans performing tasks. However, some limitations still exist, such as the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of the actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. In addition, the nonlinearities in the PAM manipulator still limit the controllability. Therefore, it is not easy to realize motion with high accuracy and high speed and with respect to various external inertia loads in order to realize a human-friendly therapy robot. To overcome these problems a novel controller which harmonizes a phase plane switching control method (PPSC) with conventional PID controller and the adaptabilities of neural network, is newly proposed. In order to realize satisfactory control performance a variable damper, magneto-rheological brake (MRB), is equipped to the joint of the manipulator. Superb mixture of conventional PID controller and an intelligent phase plane switching control using neural network (IPPSC) brings us a novel controller. The experiments were carried out in practical PAM manipulator and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm was demonstrated through experiments, which had proved that the stability of the manipulator can be improved greatly in a high gain control by using MRB with IPPSC and without regard for the changes of external inertia loads.
